Hm... I wonder if they could force first person view, and then make attacks aimable instead of targetable...

This makes it seem like you DO want CoH to be a FPS.

Which if CoH would become a FPS I would spend my $15 a month on something more entertaining. Like Heiniken.

some definitions from the dictionary :
tactics : 1)The military science that deals with securing objectives set by strategy, especially the technique of deploying and directing troops, ships, and aircraft in effective maneuvers against an enemy: Tactics is a required course at all military academies.
(used with a pl. verb) Maneuvers used against an enemy: Guerrilla tactics were employed during most of the war.
2) A procedure or set of maneuvers engaged in to achieve an end, an aim, or a goal.
Strategy : The science and art of using all the forces of a nation to execute approved plans as effectively as possible during peace or war.
The science and art of military command as applied to the overall planning and conduct of large-scale combat operations.
A plan of action resulting from strategy or intended to accomplish a specific goal. See Synonyms at plan.
The art or skill of using stratagems in endeavors such as politics and business.

These two words apply to military techniques implying units and not single adversaries.
At best 2) of tactics implies only theory and habits of a person to reach their goal and not the ongoing fight by itself who is just, as I said a series of actions and reactions that excludes any time to analyse the "tactics or strategy" of the opponent like a general would do on a battle lasting days, weeks or more.

Freedom :
Fission Lass 50 Illusion/radiation controller
Gaea's Wrath 50 Earth/Empathy controller
Khalan the confessor 26 psy/mental blaster
Dusk Tempest 50 Dark / electricity defender
Aish the geomancer 36 Plant/thermal controller

All PvP has done is further seperated an already divided community. Issue 4 was mostly a waste of time.

Rather than giving the masses more goodies, the devs spent time on an Arena. So rather than improving the game, they wasted about five months on a building that sits empty.

And we lost a Task Force.

*thumbs down*

Stop playing 1v1. That's where all of the imbalance exists. Don't fight 2v2 or higher unless you bring a solid team. Otherwise, you will be beaten into the ground. There is a counter for just about everything, but few ATs are equiped to deal with every power set.

You won't figure everything out in 5 days, but if you don't like that idea then I'd suggest sticking with pve where you won't lose as much.

In any case, have fun!

Excellent post by the orginal poster, you did an outstanding job of expressing what myself and plenty of other players seem to feel about their PvP experience to date.
Devs if your reading these posts on PvP, please look closely and you'll start to see a consensus amongst most of us in regards to the affects of holds, taunts and fear. They simply arent any fun at all and are a BIG part of whats keeping many of us from going to the arenas.

So basically what you are saying is controller please be the coat check guy for the real heroes in the arena. You hate to be held or feared or debuffed in the arena I hate to be 2 shotted by any other AT outside of a controller (Or some team oriented defenders)

Complaining about powers that they give you a 50 influence inspiration to break is in my mind just rediculous. I mean they already give you 15 secs of pure freedom after you use the chicklet mean now my controller is a low damage low health bot that just had his best defense dropped totally because you spent 50 influence before the fight, and you want to nerf it further? There are heroes in the arena that are very nearly impervious to holds and using some tactics and power combinations can basically go into the arena without fear of most staus effects. these include most tanker sets kheldians in dwarf form most scrapper sets...some controllers. the only heroes that have no protection from holds can pretty much kill a controller from range with superior tactics. Its just sad to me when players basically call for there own nerf bat upside the head.

Who's calling for a nerf bat except for you?You do remember them saying that powers used in PvP might work far differently than powers in PvE? All I'm saying is that in the context of PvP theres got to be a better way for holds and fear to work so there wouldnt be any need to buy massive quantitities of break frees or spend the entire game frustrated.
As a rule I dont like any aspect of a game that tells me how im supposed to feel.Let me put it to you this way, theres the artificial fear that a toon throws at you in PvP combat and then theres the REAL fear you can feel when every one of your teammates bites the dust and youre left facing 5 angry opponents.I'd prefer the latter any day of the weak.
Couple of suggestions, have fear weaken an opponents damage output and/or accuracy and have holds randomly "hold' or prevent a power in your tray from being used, I might still be able to close with you but if all i can do is throw my least damaging attacks youre not in any real danger and the battle becomes much more tactical for everyone involved........Those two suggestions might not be exactly the fix thats needed but theyre on the right track if any semblance of balance and enjoyment is going to exist in the arena for everyone involved....or we could just refuse to duel controllers like alot of people are doing now, hence the empty arenas

In PvP; powers are definately different than in PvE. Especially in 1-n-1.
.
My experiance is a good example. I ran only one match: my empathy/archery def against a fire/fire blaster.
That blaster should have eaten my defender several times before lunch. . .Then again for lunch. . . since my only offensive powers were single-slotted snap shot and aimed shot and the only applicable defence I had was healing aura (which I put on 'auto').
.
Turns out my auto-healing aura healed faster then his various attacks until he ranout of endurance. then I chased him with my 2 meager bowshots until I defeated him.
.
we ran this battle for 15 minutes and I won 3 times with no loss.
.
Odviously; That was not a true measure of our AT's worth or even our playing ability.
.
PvP worth is in TEAM PvP. 1-n-1 is too silly. it can not be balanced without upsetting the whole apple cart.

You are absolutely right about there needing to be more game types.

Capture the flag, protection of some area, maybe even a king of the hill type match, with a normal non-moving hill and then a moving hill area....also maybe a reverse tag game....i could go on for a while listing game types.

Another feature which didnt get mentioned is the selectable map.

I still dont know why a certain red-name said "It is unfair for that to be allowed because it would give an un-fair advantage to the person making the match".......

I mean...duh ...thats the point...they make the rules becasue they made the temporary game up to be played....then they asked people to join....people dont have to join and they should be able to see the rules way before hand so they can decide.

When i play a certain home pvp game i normally set up the rules and inform all of the people i play with of them before hand....in that way i can then choose a favorite game type and rule set for specific players or choose ones that will even the playing field a bit....

I dont like giving an outright handicap...but i do like to mix it up a bit to make it fun..
(By the way...try this game type on halo...on the level with telporters...make everyone autostealthed...arm them with nothing but rockets...and play with no shields and low health...also make sure that suicides subtract points...and make the game last for the first person to reach 10 or 15 for 3 players or lower and 20 to 25 for higher player amounts..Halo 2 kind of is lame for this sort of game...but its still fun...just not as much fun becasue you dont die easily from being inthe blast radius of your own rockets)

There should also be power ups possible and maybe even rules to specificaly set powers.....maybe even make it so certain generic powers could be chosen for all players...that way there wont be the typical uber cheese of certain tanks stun locking you in a corner...or some players being unable to do damage because there attacks dont do much or are either lethal or smash only and everyone is 90% immune to that...or better still being hit with a hold or stun or immobolize all the time and have no defense versus it.

And also there should be matches where people can set up enemies for them to battle against too.

Like maybe an uber battle of a team of 20 players against hellions or vampires.....with the possibility of setting the level or even mission objectives.(yeah...just imagine having an assualt match against level 50 hellions...bizaar yes...but could be alot of fun...never battles against level 50 Hellions might be alot of fun to try)

I cant help but recall that one Strike Force Mission for Super groups with the one mission that had tons of vampires and Vampire Generators....that would be sweet to see something like that for a huge group of people to be able to select.

oh well....thats what i think the arena should have.

I guess...its just wishful thinking right now for options like that.

I cant help but think of the xmen danger room or the practice course for the avengers..or the holofield for the extreme justice group or even the holo deck from start trek when ever i think about the arena.

The gladiator matches are a step inthe right direction at least...need a tad bit of work(like an ability to fly for the players so they can see a little better where their minions are.)...but so far they are not too bad.

By the way... icould care less about exp inthe arena or PVP zones....since they are not designed for that...but gettuing debt from those areas....good gravy...what exactly was the developement team thinking.

We've set the Wayback Machine for April of '05!

Seriously though, how'd this thread even get in this forum? I don't think this forum was around a year ago.

Issue 16 made me feel like this.

IIRC, this used to be the Arena forum before PvP zones and Gladiators were introduced, and was changed to include Gladiators when I6 hit. The Arena aspect of the forum wasn't exactly active, and not too long ago the forum was renamed and moved to discuss badges.

Ah. that explains it.

Man, look at those posts. They had no idea that I5 and ED would soon be descending upon them...

I'm beginning to believe that the devs will never be able to change it to anything less. Powers might see some better balance eventually and the bugs will be fixed but it's always going to be some form of rock/paper/scissors and you can only play that game so long before it really gets old.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not being a fanboy here, just being rational. I agree with all your sayings except this part. You are saying that they will never fix something that you have played for 5 days? Of course the experience is frustrating but they will continue to fix bugs and adjust the game for PvP. The things that was making your experience a bad one are in my opinion "bugs". Give them 2 weeks and come back complaining after (not that all you said was complaints, there was some well thoughts ideas as well).

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, Arenas have been "working" for several issues now and they are not fixed.
How many issues will it take to get fixed? 5? 10?

Of course, people are lucky to get ANYTHING to happen in the arena. I managed to get into one game and I couldn't find anyone to fight- there were 8 people in the zone, but I guess they were stalkers or invisible.

Honestly? When you play in the arena, limit stealth powers.
Stalkers will whine at first, but theyre not really ubergimped if they play smart.

Also... THREAD NECROMACNY FTW
