This change also applies to villains that do more than one type of damage to heroes. "

now according to this some one running fire shield and that is being hit by a fire melee attack that does smashing and fire damage will be able to resist the smashing damage but the fire damage will not be resisted? im confused as to how this works and also confused about the usefulness of these kinds of defense powers now.

My level 48 blaster with fire master taken for fire shield's defense against fire damage seems useless now because of this i now have wasted 2 powers?

Fire Shield does not provide a defense bonus, it provides damage resistance.

The general consensus is that this is refering to defense only not resistance.

You're confusing resist and defense

Defense:
Lowers the ODDS that you'll be hit.

Resist:
Lowers the AMOUNT of damage AFTER you've been hit.

Let's say you have a shield that gives you 10 percent defense against fire damage and 10 percent against smashing damage. You're attacked by a guy with a flaming club with does 10 pt's of fire and 10's of smashing damage. Under the bug, you'd get a 20 percent defense bonus rather then the 10 percent defense bonus you were intended to get.

No, this isn't a nerf, it is a bug fix.

This is about defense, not resistance. Your best defense that is applicable to a particular attack will be used to determine if that attack hits. Damage will be determined as it always was.

there's a difference between Resistance and Defense. "Damage Resistance" reduces the amount of damage you take AFTER you have already been hit.

i.e. guy hits you for 100 smash damage. You have 20% resist to smash. You take 80 damage.

"Defense" reduces the likelyhood that you will get hit at all.

Guy has a 50% chance to hit you with a smashing attack. You have 20% DEFENSE versus smash. Guy now has a 30% chance TO HIT. Whether you have resistance or not will come into play if you get hit at all.

So if somebody does a combined attack 50 smash/50 lethal, and you have 20% resist to smash/lethal, your Resist will apply to both and you will take 40/40.

This fix addresses defense only. Previously, if you had a bubble that gave 10% smash defense and 15% negative energy resist, somebody hitting you with a smash/negative attack would actually get double-smacked by your defense, resulting in 25% less chance to hit.

now the greater of the two applies:under the above scenario you would get 15% defense. Nothing to do with resist.

Nope, what was happening before with defense powers( fire shield wouldn't apply since its a dmg resist), was that if an attack had two dmg types applicable to the defense, the defense bonus was stacking, for example Rock Armor which is smashing/ lethal defense( not resist) with 20% defense, would have defense vs. either smashing or lethal seperately of 20%, but if used together of 40%.
Just remember there is Defense( ie the tanker primary) and defense( ie resist x% of some damage type)
-Generally defense is the chance to avoid( SR scrappers can eventually get to the point where they can avoid
75% of attacks, but take full dmg when hit)
-Resist is the dmg mitigation( an Inv scrapper with 75% resist vs. smashing/ lethal, if hit for a 100 dmg smashing. lethal attack
would actually only take 25 dmg, and this is how fire shield works against its dmg types)

I can't believe that someone has gone 48 levels without knowing that defense and damage resistance are two different things.

However, in his defense... He's a level 48 BLASTER. Which might explain a bit of the ignorance between defense and resistance.

Okay, but aren't there also defense powers that give you bonuses to melee or ranged defense? Like the super reflex toggles?

So if an SR scrapper with a deflection shield on him gets swung at by a guy with a bat (melee smashing) does he add both the melee defense and smashing defense together, or does he use only whichever is best?

Still stack, as they did previously.

The issue was, if you would reread, was people getting multiple defense bonuses against SINGLE attacks that have MULTIPLE damage types.

This was actually a big help to Dark Melee Scrappers and Energy Melee Tankers (plus others). Mobs were basically doubling their defense against the dual-"element" based attacks.

Oh the other paw, it's hurting some ice, stone, and fire tankers who were getting double defense bonuses against some types of damage.

Actually its my fault i misread the thing and htought it was using dark armor as the example defense power which confused me because i dark embrace is a resist. i was simply reading too fast and confused things, it makes sense now.

Yes, we are wondering about that a bit on Tanker forums. Hoping that this isn't going to be a problem for them, especially Ice, which is more +def then +res, and would be hardest hit by this.

Fire armor does not give Defense. It gives damage resistance. Resistance reduces the amount of damage you take, and defense reduces the chance you can get hit.

Let say you had a power that gave you 50% damage resistance to fire and 10% damage resistance to lethal. Now lets say you got hit with a Fire Sword (lethal and fire damage) for 100 points of fire and 100 points of lethal damage. You would only take 50 points of Fire damage and 90 points of Lethal damage.

(For the record, the Tanker power, Fire Shield, gives a base 30% damage resistance to smashing, lethal, fire, and 10% resistance to cold (no defense.))

Defense, however, reduces your change to get hit (it does not reduce damage). Lets say a FF defender put a Deflection Shield on you and you were also in his Dispersion bubble (lets say un-enhanced for this example). The Deflection Shield would give you 25% Defense to Lethal and Smashing attacks and the Dispersion bubble would give you 18.75% Defense to Lethal, Smashing, Fire, Cold, Energy and Negative Energy Attacks. You would thus have a total of 43.75% defense to Lethal and Smashing. Now letÂ’s say you were attacked with that Fire sword. A fire sword is a lethal and a fire attack. You have 43.75% defense to Lethal, and 18.75% defense to fire. Your defense to Lethal is greater, so that is the defense that matters. The Fire Swords chance to hit will be reduced by 43.75%. However, if you get hit, you take dull damage.
