CoH is doing things others wont do!

I have never heard of a game hosting a chat that will allow anyone to ask the head represenative of a game any question they want about a new issue/patch. Like I always have said, this game is doing great things and I bet that the PvP wont have as many issues as the PvP haters think.

Others have done it, but I do agree with you. I've played almost every mmog out there, and CoH is by far the best in my opinion.

The dev team and customer relations people are the best I've dealt with in any of the games I've played.

33 views and no replies?! Wow, this must be one of those "Congrats Devs, you're doing a pretty good job," posts instead of one of those "OMG I4 is going to have teh ebil PvP and cr4p japanime costume stuf in it!" ones...

All told, good point. I just wonder how much sanity will reign in this chat, assuming the forum demographic on I4 commentary holds true... which I hope it doesn't.

SWG used to do it but then stopped. A year later almost all of the development team has now been fired and all new staff has been brought in. Things like bugs that existed snce beta are only now being fixed but things seemed to be on the up... especially communication with the fans.

The development team for the Sims is very good with its fans, and hosts regular chats as well.

Asheron's Call did that. Submitted questions in a queue and they were answered in real time by the developers.

Thought I'd pop in and give you my opinion...

I believe that you all are not just fans but customers. Because of that, I SHOULD listen to you. I SHOULD communicate with you. That's part of what you're paying for, after all.

It's easy to get away from doing chats, interviews, reading the boards and become absorbed with game design only. But I personally try to fight that temptation and be as open as possible.

Gosh, States, if only ALL MMO Lead Designers thought like that, i would not have left FFXI, EQ2, and WoW. The Devs being players and offering news through the boards and stuff is a great feature that i think EVERY mmo would benefit from

I do have a little fear in this Statesman... I don't want to see the devs get burn out. Are you fighting that in any way? Switching things up around the office? And what about yourself? Are you still as into the program as you were four years ago?

*yeah, I'm doning the tin foil hat... I know*

I know it's been ages since I've had anything to say, around here (RL times being what they are for me), but this is the stuff that will always keep this game near and dear to me.

This is the first game since original EQ that I (and my wife, for that matter) have stayed with since Beta. It's the FIRST game that has truly spoiled me with regard to what I expect from an online RPG and even though I'm more of the "casual gamer", I actually enjoy seeing developers (and the big cheeses, like J.E) responding and communicating so frequently with their fans..er.. customers.

Glad to hear this kind of talk, though. Thanks, Jack, for thinking so highly of us (even though every other game we all play should, too, but then, that's why we're still HERE, isn't it?).

Its great to see the devs with good customer service skills, but like someone said. I hope its not something which will burn them out and they'll just cut back on doing it. However if the lead designer encourages talking with the community then I'd say its a good sign for us all.

Posted

I agree !!!!...is really a great game and has an even better community.

"A great love is alot like a good memory. When it's there and you know it's there, but it's just out of your reach. It can be all that you think about. You can focus on it and try to force it but the more you do, the more you seem to push it away. But if you're patient and hold still...maybe...just maybe...it will come to you. I just need to be somewhere she can find me" - Church from Red vs Blue

We at Stratics, as well as other Networks, but mostly Stratics (I'm biased hold regular chats with various developers several times a month. Each month, in fact, we hold one chat with one of the development teams under the NCSoft umbrella. This month we're more than happy to have Statesman and the gang join us.

It really does mean a lot to know that States. (You didn't have to tell us though, we can tell that you care about us.)

Coming from another MMO, *cough galaxies *cough, this is very refreshing to get the level of communication from the lead designer. Not everyone likes to hear everything you have to say, but being honest with us is very important. Also, delivering more than you promise is huge for me. Having things like the Halloween and Winter events are great even if some of us get rocks in our trick or treat bag or snowballs hit us while we are trying to play our boombox. In another game not-to-be-mentioned-here, we were promised everything under the twin suns of Tatooine, and promises were broken time and time again. Thanks for moving forward in a great game, States.

By god! That's the largest number of periods in one post I've ever seen! There are more periods in that post than times the developement team has said "soon."

I'd say it depends on the personality, but from my view it seems he's very passionate about the game. As long as he's the type that keeps his passion we'll be fine. From my view it seems like he is, time will tell.

Forgive me my cynicism, Statesman.

How does this relate to the way you treated invulnerable Tankers?

The Tankers have been most vocal in their concerns about the set. And you stated you were looking into their concerns.

You even launched a thread asking for our opinions as to how to improve the set.
\True, some answers were "I want to be the hulk" but on the whole we gave literate, balanced answers.
And we believed that you wer going to improve the set.

Then suddenly, you announced the nerf. Out of the blue. From nowhere. And I assure you, Tankers did not volunteer the changes.
And, apart from the ludicrous loss of range on invincibility (which should never have been put forward in the first place) that`s what you gave us.

The boards were lit up with posts complaining, (Certainly it was fair to say that the feelings were high. Basically, Tankers went to war with each other. Discussions turned into flames. Rants. This went on right through december without so much as a word from any member of the dev team (apart from your mission statement.) Not a single post.

I myself created several 100 post threads alone.

And then you just went live with it. Bang. Again, not a word.
No discussion as you had with the Scrappers. You just released it.

And, although lots of Tankers have adjusted, others, myself included, found it harder. My Tanker is not as powerful as he was, and the situational aspect of Unstop, having to run off in the middle of a fight or certainly having to tell my team mates to wait 30 secs because Unstop is about to drop is embarrasing and turns me into something of a joke.

There were lots that could have done. (left us with full health, minor end for example. Enough to weaken us after Unstop but still able to stay in the fight. ) But, how could you? You weren`t listening to the core issues.

The whole thing was an astonishingly bad pr excercise.

For me it comes down to this.
I still play. I lead a full strength SG. I do enjoy the game.

But whereas before, when WOW and EQ2 and all the others came out, I refused to look at them. I felt you guys worked so hard on our behalf that, as weird as it sounds, that you deserved my loyalty and I wasn`t going to betray that.
Now, well that`s gone. If a new game suits my fancy then I`ll have a look.

This kind of thing may not bother you.

But, ain`t it all a big shame? To have customer loyalty then just spit on that customer?

The entire Tanker episode was exactly an excercise in how NOT to treat your customers, Statesman.

Statesman, I've been very hard on you and your team about some of the things that have happened.

I hope it's never obscured the awe I feel at this world you have created, how impressed I am with the skill you and your team have displayed, and the respect for how open you and your team are.
