I haven't done this mission yet in Issue 3 so maybe it's been changed, but there's a train mission were you have to stop 5th Column from killing hostages. And one of the Nazi Bosses last name is Cheyne. I was not really happy about that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why is that?

Concerning Tim Curry and Pirates, he also did Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island.

How about we also go the other way with references.

Watched "Sky Captain..." the other day. There was a large sign for Kings Row and the symbol on the robots is nearly identical to the 5th Column insignia (at least in my memory, can't actually check anymore).

Edit: Oh and Franky's Skyraider jetpack.

I'm kinda sad no one got this:

Curry Cove = Arthur Curry = Aquaman.

That's because Aquaman sucks.

Some are blatantly obvious that no one mentions them anymore:

Red Beast Energy Drink - Red Bull

Infront Steakhouse - Outback Steakhouse

Chris Jenkins Attorney at Law - insert random ambulance chaser here.

And ya know, the architecture in Brickstown always reminded me of Blade Runner, I don't know why, something about the Zig I think.

Inkblaster - 50 - NRG/NRG

THE HOLLOWS

Grendel's Gulch:
Grendel is also the big Troll leader dude. Many a Troll can be heard yelling "For Grendel!" before charging into battle.

Posted

I dunno...most of the time I hear "For Grendel!" the troll is actually running away from me. I just think...oh yeah, Grendel's gonna be real happy with you...

Roland goes back farther than The Gunslinger. hehe.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes it does, but as you already named the initial Dark Tower book where Roland appears, (The Gunslinger) and the fact that he's a gunslinger boss...

Not much more needs to be said, eh?

WoW will never have this 'real world' factor. Instead they get bandit demigods named Van Cleef.

[ QUOTE ]

Actually the protector of Crete was Talus, not Talos. And he wasn't a minotaur...he was a bronze giant.

Talos was the nephew of Daedalus, who showed even more talent for invention than his uncle. Before he was ten he'd invented the saw, the compass and one or two others I don't recall. Daedalus killed him out of jealousy. In some versions of the myth he ended up at the Minoan court because he was fleeing punishment for this crime; in others he doesn't kill Talos until after Icarus is dead.

[/ QUOTE ]

Daedalus did make the labyrinth of course, and the Minotaur
was kept there. I gotta wonder if PC's Talos' arch-nemesis was
named Daedalus.

....hmmm

Is there any direct reference to the Minotaur in game?

Posted

Daedalus was just the contractor in charge of design and construction. King Minos, who commisioned the labyrinth, would be the AV. That's also where the word minotaur comes from - taur means bull and it was Minos' Bull thus minotaur.

One of my personal faves:

Roland- Named Malta boss. Gunslinger. For those of you literary-deprived souls out there, Roland is the main character in Stephen King's opus work The Dark Tower
<<

also could be a reference to the warren zevon song "roland the headless thompson gunner". a headless merc that was too good with a tommy gun out for revenge agains the cohort that blew his head off.

(if you like bizzare music, try warren zevon- along with this song, he has exciteable boy, lawyers, guns, and money, werewolves of london, and jenny's got a shooter.)

i loke the paragon pizzaria add that says "made fresh by made men".

Something else about Tempest Quay:
In relation to Aquaman, as seen above...Tempest was also the name the young adult Aqualad chose to use durring his later Teen Titan stint. Statesman seems fond of the Titans. George Perez (Perez Park) designed the new costume he used, as well...

and rocky horror picture show!

oh wait.. that isnt relevant.. :{

Another possible Curry reference is the actor Tim Curry, who played a number of nautical roles (and chewiing scenery with the best of them) including.... (wait for it): Hunt for RED OCTOBER and Pirates of Penzance!

And the clown in It, which is also irrelevant, but you can't forget It.

THE HOLLOWS

Most of the geography in The Hollows seems to be self-evident. The Red River is a river, the Cherry Hills are hills (strangely enough, "Red River Valley" and "Cherry Hill Park" were both popular songs in the past, although, as far as I can tell, this trend doesn't extend to any of the other areas in The Hollows, although The Four Seasons were a band that sang popular songs in the 60's.)

Grendel's Gulch - Grendel was the creature from "Beowulf" who, if not traditionally a troll, could certainly be likened to one.

Eastgate Park was just too generic a term for me to research. A quick Google search gave me 5000 hits on places in the U.S, Canada, and England.

[/ QUOTE ]I've been told by people that live near or around there that the Hollows is supposed to be New Jersey.

Hide Park: This I believe is an Austin reference since there's a Hyde park there (North Lamar if I remember correctly).

Remember the old "Guns Ammo" sign in KR (it was changed radically in I3)? There's a store in Austin with the same exact sign in South Congress.

Not to mention playing Long John Silver in 'Muppet Treasure Island'!

When I saw 'Curry Cove', that went through my head immediately.

The Argonauts, AFAIK, never encountered Circe. She's from the Odyssey as well.

[/ QUOTE ]

Whilst she is indeed best known from Homer, she can also be found in Apollonius of Rhodes' Argonautica, Book 4.

Hide Park (Skyway City)

My take on it is this:

Hide Park => Hyde Park (in London) => Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde => a man who mutates into something else after ingesting a chemical formula => kind of similar to what's happening to The Lost, yes?

Or the Trolls for that matter.

Ernesto Hess, the Council guy who wants to work with heroes, could be a reference to Rudolph Hess, a Nazi agent who parachuted into Britain in the 40's and attempted to negotiate a separate peace with Germany.

O/T: Does anyone else find the juxtaposition of the Latin-sounding name "Ernesto" with the Germanic-sounding name "Hess" a little jarring?

Not sure if it was mentioned but there is a Prisoner Boss in Bricks named 'J.P. Mason'

In the movie 'The Rock' Sean Conery plays a character named John Patrick Mason. Who is supposed to be the only man to have escaped Alcatraz. Seems he has also escapped The Brickstown Prison as well.

Here's one for ya. I've seen Fake Nemisis saying "Another visitor." and "Stay awhile. Stay forever!" These are quotes from an Epyx game called Impossible Mission (not Mission: Impossible) that I've played for the C=64 (That's Commodore 64 for you youngin's out there). These same words were uttered (one of the few games back then that had actual speech in the game) by the main villain in the game as soon as it starts. I'm still waiting for one to say "Destroy him my robots." That's about the only thing left from the game for them to say.

[/ QUOTE ]

..Not True!!! They also didn't put in the "AHHHHHahhhhaAHHHHAahhhAHHH" That my guy made about every minute and a half 8^P ! (I was about 6 at the time)

I am greatly saddened nobody has talked about the most blatant one:

The Conjuntion Junction badge in TV, which comes form the Schoolhouse mini-cartoon "Conjunction Junction (What's your Function?)"

Or maybe I'm just old.

I am blown away by all the research and information in this post. It is very obvious that the dev's put a lot of themselves into the creation of this game which has definitely made the ride a lot more fun. Thanks again Devs and to all you researchers out there, thanks for clearing up a few of the obscure references for those of us without the time to figure them out.

hide
n.
An old English measure of land, usually the amount held adequate for one free family and its dependents.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hide

Another Hide Park can be found in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. That park is named so because it is actually the size of a hide.
