Seriously. Speaking of which, I am a christian who can entertain other religious beliefs without accepting them, up to and including Mythology. (which I like) Does that make me a scholar?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Depends on how much xp you've gained.

If you've not dinged 'scholar' lvl yet, I would be happy to PL you for a small fee.

    FYI

Jack (i.e. me) has a BA in Classical Civilization, a MA in Ancient History and a MA in Greek & Latin. My specialty: ancient religion. I know ancient Greek, Latin, Italian, French, German, some Aramaic, Coptic, etc.

Basically, I'm EXTREMELY picky with mythology. Trust me on that.

This begs the question, how did you go from that to Cryptic? There has to be an interesting story here.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I believe he came to Cryptic from DC - a pretty logical step.

But in broader terms, classicists are superior beings who are capable of doing anything. Classics represents the peak of arts side academia, and the finely honed minds of its devotees are perfectly suited to creative endeavours such as those engaged in by DC or Cryptic.

The only relics Zeus ever had was his thundeerbolts and his Aegis shield.

The thunderbolts were a big help against the titans but the aegis he got after the war.

how he got it still confuses me

    [/ QUOTE ]

(Sorry if this has already been answered - I skimmed most of the thread.)

The origin of the aegis varies in different myths. As has already been said on this thread, this is pretty standard when it comes to classical mythology. Here are some of the most notable ones:

    - Apollodorus, Library 1.6.2: Athene flays Pallas and uses his skin as armour.

    - Hyginus, Astronomica 2.13: Two versions of a myth – one in which Zeus skins the goat which suckled him to create the aegis, and one in which he skins the goat belonging to the nymph who suckled him.

The Argonauts, AFAIK, never encountered Circe. She's from the Odyssey as well.

Whilst she is indeed best known from Homer, she can also be found in Apollonius of Rhodes' Argonautica, Book 4.

    Skills is in Issue 5...

Issue 4 revolves around the Arenas (now under construction)....

    [/ QUOTE ]

I must admit to being extremely disappointed by that.

Fortunately I was part of a successful Hamidon raid last night, which helped soften the blow slightly. Having to deal with the latest incarnation of the blob did provide a welcome tactical challenge.

They have their timeline for what they want to do. We aren't privy to it and that's AOK with me. If you don't like it, go play WoW.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Easier said than done - I've had WoW on backorder for about a month. Hopefully when it finally arrives it will keep me entertained until the CoH skills system comes out.

Well I for one and sick of being lead around by the hand all the time by contacts. It makes heroes nothing more than hired muscle.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Yeah, I tend to agree.

There should be some room for the Oracle or Professor X style of hero.

(NB. Yes, I know we certainly can't do away with the contacts/muscle stuff - both for logistical reasons, and because that's what most people want. I just hope that the skills provide a reasonable alternative for those who want it.)
  7. (Sorry if this has been covered before, but a quick search didn't turn up any details about the upcoming skill system.)

Whilst bashing/blasting/hacking/frying/etc. bad guys is all well and good, I'm sure I can't be the only one who's looking for some more cerebral elements in the game. At the moment Hamidon raids provide the only real 'Batman element', in which cunning and tactical thinking are really required.

I fully appreciate that a video game, especially an MMORPG, can't be expected to provide the same breadth of gameplay as a pen and paper RPG. But I'm hoping that some mental challenges might be introduced.

So, is the skill system supposed to provide this kind of thing? Can you be a detective, and actually solve crimes via your 'little grey cells'? Or perhaps an academic, and tackle intellectual problems for the betterment of the human race (well, my main's a professor of Classics, so I guess 'betterment of the human race' might be stretching it...)?

Obviously this kind of thing won’t appeal to everyone, but for me it would help flesh out the RPG aspect of the game.
