Inside jokes and obscure references

Not sure if this was intentional or not, but during a story arc (think it was World Wide Red), I was asked to rescue a Dr. Hedia Lamarr. Now if anyoneone remembers the Mel Brooks movie "Blazing Saddles", I believe the part played by Harvey Corman was named Heddie Lamarr. Coincidence?

[/ QUOTE ]

It's Hedley.

Sik,

Yes, I know that 'Wetware' is also slang for the human brain, but given the close linkage to 'Portacio Industries', it's just too much of a coincidence for me to believe that it's not a reference to Wetworks, especially given the comic's heavy emphasis on cybernetics and technology.

I love that Freak quote.

Heh some of the Freaks in Talos says "The fetizisation of material goods makes me sick!" every now and then. That always cracks me up.

Also, the fact that many times you can see Warriors, the big bad fighters, are getting mugged by Freaks.

Edited: Also, if you go down to Spankys Boardwalk in Talos you will find Platos Bookstore and The Golden Fleece café.

OMG this post is Awesome!!!!

I have one I would like to contribute....Nemesis in Crey's Folly....run to the left of exit and you will see some nemesis ona ramp outside a factory standing guard on the bridge. Run past them and one will say "NONE SHALL PASS" a clear reference to the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. About busted my gut when he said it...

This may have been mentioned before but...

last night someone in my SG took me to see the contact Penny Preston. I had a cow because my character's name is Pam Preston, and in her SG costume she has red hair, like Penny. (A long lost sister perhaps? )

Anyway, I'm studying Penny and I notice her t-shirt has a picture of Statesman on it. Cute.

Oh yeah. My video card wasn't working correctly when I first met her, and I still loved the shirt!

The shirt makes a reappearence as well, being worn by a taskforce contact in the Shadow Shard.

Don't forget the occasional Warrior talking like a Circle member. :P

WoW will never have this 'real world' factor. Instead they get bandit demigods named Van Cleef.

[/ QUOTE ]

Could be a reference to Lee Van Cleef, an actor who has done many a western film, Escape From New York, and the Master Ninja (MASTER NINJA THEME SONG).

One reference I enjoy is the occasional Hellions shouting "Come out and plaaaaaay!".

A reference to the film, and novel, The Warriors, about a gang (the Warriors) trying to get back to their own turf after a major gang player is murdered and they are accused. And they do this by going through the turf of many other gangs that want revenge.

And more obviously, the CoH Warriors are a reference, as well. The Warriors in the game, as well as in the film, wear green vests.

My favorite reference, and it may have been mentioned already, maybe even by me, I don't know, has always been the reference to Strikeforce: Morituri at the end of the Manticore TF.

One I had a question about.

The 'manager' of the Steel Canyon Icon is named Serge. He looks an awful lot like Bronson Pinchot, who played Serge, the 'manager' of the art gallery in Beverley Hills Cop.

Is this a coincidence, or are they related?

Posted

I don't thing Serge is a coicidence, nor are any of the zillions of cultural, pop-culture, and mythological references in this game. The devs are obviously well-read as well as having seen a lot of B movies, lol.

Ok, so since at least one person wants to know where the memetic (I'm pretty sure that's not a word, but it shoud be) "Go. Hunt. Kill skuls." comes from, and not everybody has the time to go through the hundreds of pages of posts that now contain these words, I thought I'd do a search for the words by date and show the earliest results.

everybody happy now?

[/ QUOTE ]

yes thanks. So I DID actually see the thread that started this stupid "Kill Skulls' running joke, I remembered that story but thought for sure that something else had to spur the "kill skulls" on since it couldn't have been that uninteresting, unfunny story. .

Now that I know the back story to it, i'm glad to find out that my instincts when i first heard "kill skulls" was right. So there really isn't anything more to that lame catch phrase. It IS just as lame as I thought it was, and there isn't some really good story that started it all which has since been beaten down to being terribly unfunny due to overrepeating the catch phrase.

Glad to know thaat the story that spawned it is as lame as the joke. Now I don't have to hunt around to try and find out why "Kill Skulls" is supposed to be funny.

Seeing as what generation the Cryptic staff is and how big that movie was (and that scene) gotta be intentional. It'd be funny if they had some of his lines from the movie.
"It will cost 5 million influence to redo your costume" "5 million? Get the *bleep* outta here!" "No, I cannot, it's serious!"

Also notable is the Founders Fall's Icon guy's name is Carson. Carson, of course, is the fashion guy on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"

Cutlass Isles - cutlass = sword wielded by pirates = Pirate Isles.

[/ QUOTE ]
Being as the Cutlass Isles are populated by Rikiti Monkeys I've always taken it as an homage to the Lucas Arts pirate game Curse of Monkey Island... just my take on it.

(or I Was Really Bored During Server Maintenance Today)

The Ziggurat - now this is where my "deep dark" pattern kind of breaks down, because a Ziggurat is actually the exact opposite. The word is Semitic and means, more or less, "to build high". Maybe the CoH designer wanted some counterpoint to all the "daap dark"-ness?

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Pretty good...I'll give you a clue on Brickstown...think Mesopotamian...

[/ QUOTE ]

Ziggurats were sumerian/mesopetamian stepped temple towers (f.i. the Tower of Babel), kinda like the pyramids...

I was curious about Dark Astoria. Oregon has a coastal town named Astoria, where such theatrical masterpieces as Kindergarden Cop, The Goonies and Overboard were filmed.
It's a little foggy there.......

Astoria in the far NW corner of Oregon, Dark Astoria in a far corner of Talos Island? Probably just a coincidence.

Posted

In case no one's covered the Rikti Crash Site, all the neighbourhoods there are named after famous battlegrounds involving the American military.

The Bulge, for instance, refers to the battle at Ardennes during WW II, and Little Round Top is a reference to Gettysburg. Pork Chop Hill from the Korean War, and so on so forth.

Cheers.

Hide Park (Skyway City)

My take on it is this:

Hide Park => Hyde Park (in London) => Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde => a man who mutates into something else after ingesting a chemical formula => kind of similar to what's happening to The Lost, yes?

[/ QUOTE ]

Hyde Park is also the hometown for Franklin Roosevelt in NY. But your London reference works better.

One of my favorites quotes, and I laugh everytime I hear it, is the Tsoo going, "You want to fight, fight me." Just about in every bad Kung Fu movie ever made.

[/ QUOTE ]

For some reason I feel that quote might be from a character named Johnny in the movie The Last Dragon. I could be wrong, but The Shogun of Harlem is one of my childhood heroes and any chance I get to bring up this movie I will.
