Cesium Exposure - Which is a sleep duration SO... Cesium as in "cease moving" perhaps?

This was always a running joke between me and my SO... She's *from Astoria, OR* and every time a zombie wanders by and she happens to be in the area, I go "Hey isn't that <fill in the name of one of the town's residents>?" *Whacks my head*

The town is touristy, and only lately is getting some tourist buzz due to the anniversary of being the end of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. If anyone was *from* there though they might mistake it for an Evil Dead movie...

[/ QUOTE ]

Although I'm not FROM Astoria, having grown up in a town near there... I have to agree that Astoria is indeed inhabited by the walking dead

How is that everybody remembers the Goonies and Kindergarden Cop being filmed there, but not the classic Short Circuit? Johnny Five is Alive!!!

Still though, I'm guessing Dark Astoria is an East Coast reference to to Astoria, NY.

Running down the list of hospitals and how they relate to the initial list of zone names...
(Atlas) Chiron is a centaur from Greek mythology. (should that make it the Chiron Medical and Veterinary Center? ok, maybe not.)
(Galaxy) Cygnus is a constellation.
(Kings) Crowne Memorial is another royalty reference.
(Skyway) Comte Joseph Louis Lagrange was a famous astronomer. You may have heard of Lagrangian Points in reference to orbital positions, those are also named in his honor.
(Steel) (no reference, it's named for the zone.)
(Talos) Phoenix is obviously a mythic reference, and a good one for a hospital.
(Indy) Bell Medical Center continues the nautical theme.
(Bricks) (no reference again)
(Astoria) St. Elegius was the hospital in the show St. Elsewhere (what I found online about the actual saint himself seems to have no medical connection.)
(Founders) William Harvey was the first physician to study the circulatory system. Though a medical reference, Harvey was English so this one doesn't seem directly related to a founder - maybe there's a different reference?
(Peregrine) Aquarius is the constellation of the water bearer, familiar to most people as part of the zodiac.

In Firebase Zulu, there is a Doctor Quaterfield who gives you a TF.

This *may* be a tongue-in-cheek reference to Doctor Quatermass of early BBC science fiction fame.

Hey, I can't help it if you Americans are still stuck with the Imperial system while the rest of the world uses the much more intuitive and scientifically approved Metric system. But no, Metric has to be gone to the Americans!

[/ QUOTE ]
Feh, metric blows. They made it all easy so people wouldn't have to do math in their heads, and where's the fun in that?

SI, now, SI (which is *not* the metric system) is heaven-sent. And if you ask me to explain the difference I'll have to go hide under a rock until you go away, so there.

some badge references...

I forget the train of thought that connects Theodore Knight to Baxter. The Baxter Building is the headquarters of the Fantastic Four, and the Knight building was the HQ for supergroups in Paragon. Who can fill in the missing link?

The Upgraded badge reference Kord Technologies. Here it's Tony Kord, but there's a Kord Technologies in DC Comics owned by Ted Kord, a.k.a. The Blue Beetle.

Justice Avenger is obviously Justice League and the Avengers rolled into one. The badge references a billionaire playboy who could be a Batman or Iron Man reference - do we know if Justin Sinclair is one of the Freedom Phalanx?

Secret Admirer references the hero couple War Witch and Apex. Is this a Scarlet Witch + Vision reference? Anyone know any more about either of those heroes?

Whitecap is found on the Alba Varden, which was the ship in Lethal Weapon 2. (and I think other movies have referenced it, too.)

there's a badge in The Hive, and all I'll say is "That's concentrated Evil. One drop could turn you all into hermit crabs."

Actually, Dark Astoria is a poor mans Silent Hill. All we need is a wall with the message "There was a hole here once, but now its gone" and we would be all set.

Well, that, and having a Sexually Repressed moron carrying a steel pipe and looking for his dead wife start running around there.

and the really sick part of this is, I knew this, I just had to look up the exact number:

"With atomic time the unit of a second is defined as; the duration of 9,192,631,770 cycles of microwave light absorbed or emitted by the hyperfine transition of cesium-133 atoms in their ground state undisturbed by external fields"

so the cesium exposure enhancement increases sleep duration, which increases the number of seconds you sleep. Anybody got a better one than that?

Theodore Knight is an actor, and on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" his character's name was "Ted Baxter" so thus, Ted Knight Building ---> Baxter Building. (I didn't think this up, so I can't take credit for it )

Tony Kord is the conglomeration of two tech characters: Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Ted Kord (Blue Beetle II)

War Witch and Apex are from the City of Heroes comic book

In trying to catch up with new posts here it dawned on me; The Colorado River = Red River.

Got this from a website when I went looking to double check my memory:

[ QUOTE ]
The Colorado River was originally named Rio Colorado or "Red River" by the Spanish. A person looking at the river today may not understand how it came to be named in this way, as the present day color of the river is more of a blue-green. The reddish-brown color that originally gave the river its name become a rarity upon completion of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. The silt and sediments that gave the river its color are now trapped behind the dam in the bottom of Lake Powell.

[/ QUOTE ]

It could fit.

are you saying they appeared there before the badges came out? ok, then the badge is a reference to that comic book :-)

Theodore knight was also the original Starman in the DC universe.
He was one of the original financial backers of the JSA.

I always assumed that King's Row was a reference to Jack "King" Kirby .

This is a comic book inspired game after all.

Here is a movie not otherwise named, but first the quote:

Terra Volta, as you attack a group of Sky Raiders - "Remember, short controlled bursts!"

Cpl Hicks from Aliens

Cracked up the first time I saw it... great stuff.

OK, for a silly digression. (I knew that minor in Chemistry would one day come back to haunt me)

Oh Cesium, oh Cesium,
Thy spectrum doth us please-ium.
Thy sky-blue lines in plasma's fire,
Do dreams of icy lakes inspire.
Oh Cesium, oh Cesium,
Thy spectrum doth us please-ium.

Oh Cesium, oh Cesium,
When held, you never freeze-ium.
Thy gently smoking silver spheres,
When dropped in water, please the ears.
Oh Cesium, oh Cesium,
When held, you never freeze-ium.

Oh Cesium, oh Cesium,
You put us at our ease-ium.
You tend the seconds of the day,
So that our watches never stray
Oh Cesium, oh Cesium,
You put us at our ease-ium.

---Songs of Cesium #34

And there's plenty more where that came from Skippy!

Oh I wish I had a pound of cesium.
Oh I wish I had a pound of cesium.
I would take it in the shower,
And I'd glory in its power.
Oh I wish I had a pound of cesium.

one of the earliest mishs you do is to retrieve a crate (stolen from a Govt warehouse) from one of the villain factions. The number on the crate is the same as the number placed on the crate that the Arc of the Covenant is placed in in "Raiders of the Lost Arc." Once completed, your contact says something like "you didnt peek did you?" I also believe a mish has you rescue a Dr Jones, a university proffessor.

Not sure if this was intentional or not, but during a story arc (think it was World Wide Red), I was asked to rescue a Dr. Hedia Lamarr. Now if anyoneone remembers the Mel Brooks movie "Blazing Saddles", I believe the part played by Harvey Corman was named Heddie Lamarr. Coincidence?

[/ QUOTE ]

The Blazing Saddles reference was in turn referring to Hedy Lamarr . Amazing woman.

Oh, and to another poster: since when is Three Mile Island in Pittsburgh? Closer to Harrisburg, PA, I suspect. =)

(Anybody else think a wikipedia devoted to these references would be the bee's knees?)

OK, I read all 23 pages of posts, and I don't think I missed anything, but am I really the only one that thought the Hive was a reference to Resident Evil? Just ask Alice.

Posted

I don't think it's been mentioned, largely because I think it's only a curious coincidence, but doesn't the name "Grendel's Gulch" (in the Hollows) bring to mind "Galt's Gulch" from Ayn Rand's books?
