letter to the devs
What crash bugs have you found?
What bugs are there that are so critical?
Damned if you do, damned if you don't...
Mission objectives make no sound--in old-style cave missions or in orenbega, that can cause hours of searching time to find the last glowie
Touch of Fear buffs instead of debuffs--disasterous to use in a tight fight
That's just two of them.

GadgetMania Under Attack: The Digg Lockout
I've been playing computer games since the mid-70's. I've never seen a game be released perfectly. I've never seen a piece of software written perfectly.
What's important to me is how things are handled overall. With CoH, I think things are being handled better than any other mmog I've experience.
As a software developer I wouldn't call either of those critical. I wouldn't allow a bug on that scale to stop something from shipping.
There have been a few threads about the Kheldian crash bug still persisting, even though it was reported on test as well.
Check out the known issues thread on test. All of those were enough of a reason for me to wait for issue three to be fixed before it was released.
Pushing issue three when there were regressions in the code was foolish in my opinion. The blinky sound no longer working is a clear regression from Issue 2.
Armors not useing resistance enhancements to protect against toxic was another clear reason to wait.
Heck any of the reasons on that bug list are a good reason to wait. Especially when the free respec was not ready. The respec not being ready alone was enough of a reason to wait.
How many more reasons do you need. Do you want ten reasons? 20 reasons? I am sure the "External Testers" can supply you with a long list of reasons.

Don't ever practice prosecutorial law.
*Whispering*
"What do we have on this guy?"
"He killed 18 people, stole a car, and flashed a blind man."
-Judge
"WILL the prosecution please present their case."
"Yes your honor. It is our intent to show that THIS man is absolutely, 100% guilty, of public indecency."
I hope you get that reference. If not, I will present it this way; You don't build a good case. If someone says "What are the glaring problems with this issue?" and you present two problems, with the caveat of 'And that's just two'... it doesn't make a strong argument.
There are a few issues that need to be worked-out, but some of you people are acting as though the game is broken. In-game, the CoH community is one of the most mature, reasonable, and fun communities in any MMO I've ever played. On the boards, it's one of the whiniest, most spoiled-brattish ones I've ever seen.
Think of it this way. You designed a shirt, and had a bunch made to be given away for FREE in stores, to people who were already customers of these stores. The shirt was brilliant... just great... but every single one had a loose thread in the collar, and another on the left sleeve.
Still, they're free... and you're aware of the problem, and have promised to fix it soon. How would you like, then, to have dozens, if not HUNDREDS of people running up to you, basically saying;
"Dude, I know that you know that your shirts have loose threads, so I just wanted to say you suck, and you never paid attention to us, and you have ruined our lives/holidays/whatevers. I also know that you've promised to fix these problems right away, but you still suck, and did I mention that your shirts had loose threads... I'll never shop here again."
i would call the lack of a respec critical to those who have char.s that they can't play safely for a week until the respec comes along.

Seriously, why do you still play or frequent these boards, do us all a favor and leave. You don't represent the majority of the player base, you arr bitter for whatever reason. The so called "show stopper" bugs have not affected me or my friends and we are casual players of all archetypes, level 40 - 20. You people are so melodramatic.

That's two bugs (both of which were fixed and are in the pipeline). Neither are crash bugs. When you go live, there are inevitably some bugs - nothing is perfect. We need to make our judgment whether an issue holds up release or not.

Not so much a bug, just a bone head idea: MAJOR POWER CHANGES RELEASED WITHOUT THE PROMISED RESPEC ON TIME.
As mentioned before, that ALONE was reason to delay a week. No one would have noticed if you had delayed a week. Sure, people were chomping at the bit for i3, but when you said "sometime after Jan. 1st," you gave yourself a lot of leeway. Then you rushed it out without TWO major features you and your team had said would be in there... seriously, one week? Why NOT wait and have those features IN as well as some bug fixes?!?!
You guys said before the HOlidays "balance and bug issues make i3 not ready before jan 1." Then nothing. You guys come back, say nothing, change nothing... then BAM release it. SO if nothing changed, nothing was said... why didn't you release it BEFORE the holidays. You released the same version on the Live servers, that 10 days before "wasn't ready" on the Test server.
If you had released it then, we'd still be in the same situation now; save BY NOW many things would have been fixed.
The process for i3 boggles me almost as much as you guys' release of i2. Maybe by i7 we can expect smooth, disciplined, and thought out releases.
I don't agree with the original poster... A lot of people are making these problems out to be far more serious than they actually are. None of these problems have any significant impact on gameplay.
In the beginning glowing objects made no sound and people managed just fine. I don't know the situation with Touch of Fear, but I can't imagine its that bad. And if it is, avoid using it until its fixed, its not a big deal.
The same goes for all the other known problems I've seen. Some may be a nuisance, but none qualify as critical. Considering how much has been changed and added with this update I'm fairly impressed by how smoothly things have gone.
I for one, wasn't convinced that the bosses changes on test were a good idea. However, I want to play a bit on the live servers before I make any judgement. So far I've seen predominantly good reactions to it, which I'm surprised about.
As far as the community goes, I think CoH has one of the best communities of any MMORPG, both in the game and on the forums. I frequented EQ's forums for a short while. I've visited the EQ2 and WoW forums to get a sense of what things are like. With WoW in particular you don't have to look far at all to find some people with really bad attitudes.
I have to say, on the CoH forums, even people who have complaints and are threatening to quit are courteous and try to be thoughtful in their arguments. I guess it helps having strict moderators.
There's just no pleasing some people.
So what issues are in the release that were so crucial to gameplay that it had to be pushed out the door with known bugs included and major parts (respec, global chat) missing?
Was it worth upsetting every Invuln out there by releasing it without the respec just so people would get to play their Kheldians a few days early? Maybe you think that my stumbling around looking for glowies for an extra 20 or 30 minutes is a minor issue but I assure you, it's not at all minor to me.

Presumably, they did this so that devs would actually be around and working at full capacity when the bug reports started to come in, rather than letting all the bugs simmer while they were away for the holidays. It's rational and logical and it makes a lot more sense than kicking it out the day before Christmas and everyone having to live with the glitches for two more weeks because nobody was there to fix them.

I know and read his signiture for Pete's sake! Talk about disgruntled.
2 minor bugs vs the great time i had with the new content(no i never did go to test server). I think some people just aint happy if they dont have everything there way. Why not enjoy what we did get instead of nitpicking everything apart?

Ooooh, you have to wait a few days. Game killer there.
Besides, the free respec is more of a database thing than a coding thing. Keep your wet little pants on. It's coming.
That I can understand, but maybe you didn't see my point. My point wasn't to argue that this should have been released before Xmas. It was to show how they said it wasn't ready THEN, went on holiday, came back changed nothing, and released it.
Did no one else notice that?!
For a different perspective: Its nice to have people that believe you are capable of being perfect.
If these bugs were fixed, why NOT wait? Where was the great groundswelling saying "give it now"? When you make decisions like this, you balance the reasons to go and the reasons to wait.
I write software for a living as well, and yes, some bugs are inevitable. I've even shipped with bugs that I knew could be resolved with another week's worth of work, because I knew that people were having problems with the prior version that were solved in the new version.
But I just don't see the reason for pushing it through now, when you knew that significan issues (the free respec, global chat, the bugs on the known issues list) weren't quite there yet.
It's not like you'd said "We'll be posting it the first week in January", most who talked about it agreed that you probably wouldn't.
Why the rush? You took the time to get the regen scrapper issues right, and kudos on that. You took the time to get the burn tanker issues right, and kudos on that (some need respec because of the shuffling of protections that was done, but the things that were broken got fixed). Why rush these through?

Maybe because the majority of the players are playing the game and having fun instead of notice petty things to complain about?
I am writing concerning the release of issue 3. I am not complaining about supposed nerfs or any such thing that I my think is wrong with the issue. I am writing concerning the attitude and system of the how Issues are released.
In todays computer industry, it is standard to release products that are not fully ready. To release products knowing patches will have to be released later to fix known issues. As consumers we are forced to accept broken products. Sadly enough we do. We purchase these products continually and then belittle those who cry foul.
Companies release said products for many reasons. The main reason is because they can. Obviously if the consumers rejected their broken products they would have to stop. I unfortunately doubt that will ever happen. If the customers are willing to accept inferior products why should anyone desire to give them anything better?
Now when it comes to our FREE issues that you release for us, I am torn. After all this is something I did not really have to pay for. I pay my monthly charge to play the game as is. I am happy to do so. I think the game is great and frankly Im pretty much addicted to the game. The fact that you as a company have made the decision to release FREE issues on a roughly 3 monthly cycle is fantastic. I thank you.
With Issue 2s release we had problems. Frankly it was brutal when it first went live. I couldnt even play during the first 24 hours and even after that it was pretty bad until all the patches were put out. When the decision was made public that Issue 3 was to be delayed, I was disappointed, yet relieved. I said to myself as well as to others, they will fix it before it is released to not have another issue 2 fiasco. When issue 3 was released yesterday, slightly disappointed as I was still 3.5 levels from lvl 50, I was greatly excited. Then I played it and was disappointed. We have received a broken product. There were known issues and the product was released despite them.
Now the known issues were not enough to delay the release of issue 3- because that is how the industry is run. This is not honorable nor should it be something that we as consumers swallow without a complaint. There was no posting saying here are the known issues with Issue 3, and we feel it should not hold up the release of it. It was only after the release and the complaints came that the statement was made that the known issues were not enough to delay the release.
I would respectfully simply say this. Please be better than the industry standard, and if you feel that you cant or wont, at least be upfront and make a statement about known issues with an issue as it is released.
I realize for a lot of reasons this wont happen. I truly wish it would though. It would make us players happier for numerous reasons.
