Did anybody else read this and think, "Aw, crud, there goes my 10 million in saved influence."

My largest concern at the moment is how this will be retrofit for those of us who don't want to reroll our higher level characters. I agree with another poster that getting some of the low level badges at higher levels, while very nicely rewarded with a badge, can drag for us collector freaks

Also, I would like to see a clarification of if we can do all 4 skill sets, or if we can actually only do one forever and ever till infinity (not the server).

I like it.

But of course, we'll have to see how it works. Love how passionate everyone is about the game, but seriously, making assumptions for better or worse is mostly pointless at this point. Long as this doesn't turn into Equipment Quest, I'll give the Devs the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. And when proven otherwise, they're usually quick to correct any problems.

Can we at least wait until the system's in the Training Room or we hear some more details?

4. Skills are NOT required. You don't need to play with them at all; but they do give rewards...

[/ QUOTE ]

This sounds very much like the badges - badges are not required, but 10% extra Hits and 5% extra Enduracne is nice. Not that I have bothered, to this point.

All in all, reasonable.

1. Skills won't be required for mission completion.

2. Skills won't create temp powers; these are skills like "History", "Forensics", etc.

3. Skills do not impinge on the combat mechanics at all.

4. Skills are NOT required. You don't need to play with them at all; but they do give rewards...

5. Psychology is in there. Never fear.

I'm still kinda curious about what the Science skills help out with. I hope it's not something where I have to build a flux capacitor and find the 1.21 gigawatts to power the damn thing. Then again, making gizmos would be pretty nifty.

[/ QUOTE ]

I had thought that the crafting of inspirations or enhancements might have been the SSOCS. You'd have science or magic skills to be able to manufacture inspirations or enhancements. I wasn't particularly looking forward to the idea, but I would have been able to live with it.

This is much cooler, I think.

Not exactly - I thought there were going to be all sorts of internal puzzle type thingies involved.

I'm still wondering how they're going to resolve Skill Checks. Statesman did say there'd be challenge involved, and I'm not sure where the challenge (or the risk, for that matter) lies in the system as described.

TBH I'm hoping that you can attempt skill checks that are possibly too hard for you, with a risk of bad things happening if you fail - the most likely being triggering an ambush or causing the lab equipment to blow up or something like that. Risk and reward...

On another note, the "Powers are my heart..." puzzle does't really work. The "Heart" and "Soul" were metaphorical constructs, no heroes powers actually involve beating enemies to death with their heart (Get working on that powerst for Issue 4 by the way), but the "Mind" of the hero was literally, an aspect of his mind.

...I'm too pedantic aren't I?

Well, I wasn't completely correct either. I always said it would be detective skills. But lo and behold, we're getting that and more!

I have great hope for this system. I just hope that something as cool is implemented next Update.

If it simply gives you xp it is just another form of the "grind" and wont add anything of worth to the game. If it is seprate from xp leveling the way skills and equipment are in other games then it will add to the game.

[/ QUOTE ]

can't it give you xp AND add to your character? I dont see any reason why it can't (or won't, because from the sounds of it, it will) do both.

here is the quote from CGW

[ QUOTE ]
Skills are City of Heroes' answer to the ubiquitous MMO crafting system - except they're totally different. Characters will be able to specialize in one of four different skill trees: Detective, Science, Communication, and Scholarship. They can further specialize in various areas of expertise, such as Forensics or Security for the Detective tree. Skills are level-independent and wholly optional; your character will be able to interact with myriad objects during the game, at which point he, (Ed. note: or she ), can attempt a series of skill checks. Success brings new objectives or perhaps some extra experiance. For example, succeeding at a Security check in a bomb infested building might reveal the explosives on the mission map.

Skills are learned and improved by studying at universities throughout Paragon City. You'll earn temporary, expendable skill boosts during missions; these are somewhat similar to inspirations but can also be converted into wisdom, which is used to add permanent skill boosts at the aformentioned universities. As with enhancements, you'll find generic skill improvements as well as stronger, more focused upgrades alon the lines of dual- and single- origin enhancements. The only skill you'll need now, though, is the patience to hold out for all this good stuff.

[/ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

Does anyone ever wonder where these universities are going? All of a sudden these massive centers of learning sprout up through the ground. Maybe I should move to Rhode Island, there seems to be a lot of cool stuff happening down there now.

Personally, I'm more worried about the Supergroup becoming replaced by the SuperFRAT.

I mean, can you imagine what superhero hazing would be like?

Lol, I want that power! I'll even trade my Crey Pistol for it. Okay, maybe not that.

The skills system looks like it will be fun and add more variety to our heroes. Can't wait to see all the details.
