mostly human?? we clearly read different comic books then. you stay away from my robots, gargoyles, dragons and werewolves thank you very much

it is kind of scary really. i posted the exact quote he used he OUTRIGHT SAYS THAT THIS IS A WORST CASE ESTIMATE, AND THAT IT IS NOT A DOOM POST but people still are confused about it. It seems that no matter how clear you make it, people will co-opt what a person says for their own purposes.

  9. I tend to reroll characters ratherthan full on delete them. some of my characters right now are waiting in the ether for a new powerset to come around so that i can bring them back and tinker a bit with their story to make the new stuff fit. generally my stories are general and deal more with motivations and history then powers. then there is the case of a character that i had initially made for a silly holiday themed gorup with friends that never really took off, but upon reading a few short stories, suddenly i had an idea and completely rewrote him, and suddenly a joke character/ homage to the rudolph the red nose reindeer claymations had my favorite story of all my characters as a pseudo-neil gaimen styled ancient power.

Also, the Sonic (blast and buff) and Archery (Archery/Trick Arrow) sets. They're so established by now I sometimes forget they weren't available at launch.
the armors and mezz protection back in the day did stink, when they did multi stacking armors(and also made stone armors look really cool when stacked) it was a major thing. i still remember having to off frozen armor to put on wet ice, and then getting pounded because all of a sudden my s/l defense was lousy.

ok first off, i am not criticising the fellow for acting, i am criticising the fellow for telling his students to put themselves at risk, that was stupid and irresponsible. heroes are fine in comics and pretend, but this is the real world where criminals have weapons and can kill people. Responsible teachers consider this before telling his students to put them selves at risk of being killed or seriously injured. if he went in saying "whoever wants to come, come with me" and those same guys came with him, then great for him, but telling your students to act, but is being an irresponsible teacher. send them to call the cops, have them get descriptions of the muggers, fine, but you do not put your students in harms way because you have a superhero fantasy. People who know me know that I would have intervened myself, it would be my choice for myself, if i were with my friends who had trained at the same martial arts school that i studied and assisted instruction at after getting my dan, or my friends with military or police training, i would hold myself to the same standard. if you want to come, you are welcome but i do not have the right to abuse my authority as a marital artist nor as a friend to put you in danger.

and yeah thorny, most styles do integrate weapons training into them, but here is a dirty secret, a lot of students arent combat ready, even if they mechanically know the moves. you keep training them, hoping that eventually they put together the intangibles and develop the instinct to be able to defend themselves if they are at risk and cannot retreat, but some people are there because its fun, some want to win medals, and some want to lose weight. Of the guys who went to dan testing with me, i can think of about 2 other guys that legitimately wanted to learn to be effective in a fight, and talking to other local martial artists, both in traditional and mma settings, that is consistent. seems silly, but this is the world you deal with. not everyone is going to be in a fight, i have gone nearly 2 decades without being in a fight that wasn't a sparring match, most people arent going to have to use their training, which is good all things considered.but the best you can do is continually drill them with the mechanics and theory and hope that even if they dont have their heads around it, that they have the mechanics drilled into their muscles. maybe this guy knew that these guys were his trusted inner circle of actual fighters, but as a former assistant instructor myself, that just screams stupid, irresponsible jock behavior, and had these guys had some concealed weapons and killed these guys who weren't ready for when things get real, then would we still be looking on approvingly?
  12. well zam, villains are going to have less content no matter what, the game came out later and lacked the filler that a lot of hero zones were. Plus, as much as i try to get more people to play redside, the bulk of the population plays blue more, it becomes a self fulfilling problem really, unless people actually put some population behind red, red is going to appear lower priority. that said, the posi was simply unfun in its old incarnation, a fix was needed. hopefully there will be some new redside stuff as well, but for the non tf content(people shoudl remember that alot of dedicated soloists and small teamers never do tf's, i did my first one 4 years into the game) the story-arc stuff was evenly distributed and so far the reception has been very positive for the redside version of it, so there is that. but is it "devs hate villains" again? no, villians just need some more people to freaking play them.
  13. you know, the one thing that stuck out to me was that the instructor told them to intervene...i dunno, the muggers could have had concealed weapons and just telling your students to go get involved with a life threatening situation, that seems kind of irresponsible. Now had the instructor himself been the one to hop in with a "watch how i handles x situation" then it would have been less troubling, but this strikes me as some macho that fortunately didnt go badly, but could have.

This is kinda disturbing news. I thought we were just under 100 000. That is a rapid decrease in population. Yikes!
    no actually his comment is

"Doom and gloom? Not hardly. For one thing, assuming that only a third of that represents monthly subscriptions, that still pegs the game at around 40,000 subscribers. That's not a bad number for a six-year-old game, and it's clear that they're not slowing down the development side of things. There are many theories in the thread explaining why the numbers were bad, and they're pretty good logical ideas. But it's still unsettling."

so no, he is saying that as a worst case scenario, the population numbers arent fatal (though 40 k only would be alarming). but that is his absolute worst case scenarion, NOT his actual estimate.

I suppose one more question on the topic: should I play scrapper as my first toon - how valuable are they to groups (should I eventually feel confident grouping)?
people are pretty laid back here. if you are a scrapper, just try to let everyone know you are starting. some scrappers can get carried away, and until you are used to scrapping you may find yourself getting in over your head. but otherwise, just make sure to hit people(and as a scrapper, you will find that pretty fun anyhow) and everyone is golden.

EDIT; wanted to add, if you get a villain to level 20 you will unlock 2 new classes, a soldier of arachnos and arachnos widow, both of them solo very well. if you get a hero to 20 you unlock an alien shapeshifting race called kheldians, they can be either peacebringers or warshades, they are a bit more nuanced, the villain ones are very solo friendly out of the box though. and getting to 20 is not hard in regular play.

iyt is fairly populated, around 100 k subscribers. more populated servers are freedom or virtue, but regardless of the server, go to the subforum and find out what the "global channels" are. those are the major chat lines for the server and will be of major help getting situated and getting teams for larger content. note that in this game we have "super sidekicking" where you are automatically raised to the level of the team leader, so you can really team with just about anyone.

as for soloing, most builds can solo, particularly villainside, but the champions for easy soloing tend to be scrappers heroside and brutes villainside. once you get he nuances down you will also find masterminds really resiliant, and blasters have a fun damage focused gameplay style, but you will be taking hits, and until later game, you wont have much in the way of mitigation for those hits. also a lot of enemies can layer stuns on you, though as a blaster, you can keep throwing your bottom two powers even when stunned, but you will still be immobile and unable to throw your major hitters.

if you have other questions, post em up here, or send a tell to @rian_frostdrake, and if im on ill see if i can help.

also, this game is fairly casual friendly, so there arent really "mistakes" you may find that a particular powerset doesnt agree with your playstyle, sure, but nobody is going to kick you for not having a predetermined amount of dps. but most of us have a good number of alts, i have over 60 myself and am considered fairly mild by comparison to some. you will find that even within classes, an electric scrapper and a dual blades scrapper feel fairly distinct..and that's without even discussing the secondaries, so play around and find what makes you happy, and dont be afraid to ask, some of us have been here forever and like answering questions.
  19. well, as much as this may be nice for some players(wouldnt mind a wolf or quadruped version of a dragon myself) i dont see it happening. the animations required would just be a massive amount of work, tailoring any amount of costume stuff to make sense would be even more, and sadly, as mentioned it would be a payoff for only a small niche, so I really would not hold my breath for this to be implemented.
  20. well, i have the standard dragonforce stuff-heart of a dragon, storming the burning fields, through the fire and the flames, these are particularly good on itf runs, tons of enemies mobbing you, giant greek mythological monsters all around, usually I am some sort of monster, like a dragon, a werewolf, a giant robot, an angel or someshuch, so the whole look is fairly metal.

in addition a song by abney park http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88ZJEFXCqew, reminds me of some of the more intense settings in coh..and naturally my steampunk pirate homage dual pistol character

also, and i will admit right away that its an odd match, but such is life this song, "stand in the rain" by a christian pop group superchick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2naYghOqM0s reminds me for the weirdest reason of a tanker. actually had an alt inspired by this one, though the link would be hard to notice unless you read the bio and i told you a lot of side info for her. funny thing is i have another tanker who also is inspired by a tenuously related song, "space robot 5" , so i have an odd link between tankers and christian pop music :P

oh, and especially for a bots mastermind, Dr. steel is a very strong it.

  22. well, one thing i keep asking for is a lfm option. a lot of pug teams want more players, but inviting people can eb dicey since people generally dont use the current team settings, so a lfm would change the dynamic to be more passive, you leave on the light and they come to you, and i think for less dynamic team builders, it would make life a lot easier.

  24. clever titles that suggest interesting themes are usually the first to be picked. also i do follow specific players with good storytelling rep, and finally, i do check out the sub-forum, I dont say much, but if something is making noise, then i will give it a check out. sometimes i will head to the one stars and see if there is some troma-style bad/amazing stuff. results are mixed, but there have beena few hits that keep me trying this as a viable tactic.
