    Really?

I looked those powers over and figured they were skippable: Namely, I'm gunning for resist debuffs to help a league (team) melt hard targets faster, while at the same time buffing/healing them.

HE seems like it's mainly -regen. And doesn't a rad to that much, much better? I'm not sure how much -regen 500 percent even IS, to tell ya the truth.

Same thing with forge: It's a good to-hit bomus and a smal damage bomus. Seems like a kinetic puts that FAAAR in the shame. And Forge is single target, isn't it?

I'm perfectly willing to be schooled on this topic, I just don't see the added heft those powers lend the team.

However: Mace mastery? huh? (looks) OOOOOOhhhhhhhh! Scorpion shield is freakin amazery!

    (makes changes)
  2. Well, I have been rebuilding some toons lately, and have moved my old bs/sd to the top of the shortlist.

    Why?

    CHAINMAIL.

Anyway, the time has come to finally dust this sucker off.

I was incredibly pleased with how my fire/sd turned out.

    (see thread here)

So I come to you once again, for advice.

Here's the build I'm looking at.

    Issues:

I dislike the medicine pool, and would like to get iCap versus all.

Leadership pool would be a nice addition, and I want Grant Cover.

But every time I start tinkering on this, I wind up breaking something.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?
  3. Hello, mighty Defenders!

I am looking to build a second 'high tier' Defender, this time focusing on resists and heals with resist debuff, versus defense and hitpoints with resist debuffs. After somethought, I ditched my sonic/sonic idea and went with thermal/sonic instead.

I am not good at defender builds, but I did tinker one together.

Please review and if anyone has any thoughts for improvement, let me know.

Since we can get defense bonuses from IO sets and and invulnerability has a couple of defensive powers it seems easy to build for defense.

I built a Katana / Invulnerability character with soft capped S/L and can get soft capped melee with one DA. I also have 72.9 S/L resistance.

All other position defenses are in the mid-20s with resistances in the mid-20s or higher as well.

    What am I missing?
    Invuln is awesome on scrappers.

But it is much, MUCH better on brutes.

I have multiple inv scraps, and my inv brute is...better. A lot.

Invuln has one major issue in itrials to date, and that is the enormous amount of confuse and terror.

Invuln has no protection against those, and you can literally be perma-locked against some foes. Leadership pool, clarion, and hybrid helps a LOT, though.

If you use leadership and hybrid to cover the confuse/terror hole, you can then toss in a rebirth. Rebirth and dull pain means you blithely ignore psionic damage.

End drain....well, ageless can be used to cover that handily.

The devs are doing a good job in making ALL the iPowers useful, thus giving us reasons to get at least T3 in multiples of them.

Note: We are now susceptible to taunt. That leadership pool is looking better and better.

    Quoted for three excellent suggestions.

Tanks are truly a different play experience.

Fire/electric is a high-damage tanker, lots of AOE and flashy effects. Good for solo, but can also easily be tough enough to handle nearly anything a team wants to tackle. An active playstyle, you'll be looking at healing flames quite a bit, and using attacks to mitigate your damage.

Electric/stone is a bit less damaging and a lot tougher, but much of the toughness comes from attacking. Less flash, but lots and lots of toppling bad guys. Reasonable solo, able to tank for any team doing anything except maybe toxic. Energize on a tanker is mighty, and never forget to use Power Sink as an attack, every time it's up and you have a crowd of bad guys.

Inv/dm is the tanker's tank. ST damage is acceptable, but the AOE is limited at best. In exchange? You will reach levels of durability you won't believe even after you did it yourself. Team mates are nearly a requirement on in inv/dm, but if you want the full-on 'immovable object' experience, this is hard to beat. The only thing that will mar the zen-like peace of your play experience is confuse/fear effects, and the leadership pool can even help out with that a bit.

-It takes too long to get AOEs in place.

Your first solid aoe attack doesn't come until lvl 26 and it's base recharge is 90s the next one isn't available until 30-32? Fire/Ma, Shield/StJ are a lot more satisfacory imo
    Tanks are not about damage.

Tanks are about tanking, which is not the same as durability.

Also, SD/MA has three primary points of synergy.

    1) Storm kick is a massive def to all buff. Def to ALL. Since shield is positionals, that covers everything except non-positional attacks. How many of those are there in the game? The buff is very applicable into the incarnate levels, as well. Its real value is not the size of the buff, its in the fact that it has NO HOLES.

    2) Mitigation is all knockdown. Dragontail and shield charge synergize beautifully. Many/most of the iFactions to date are susceptible to knock. Knockdown works like a charm against them. (That's counterbalanced by outlevelling things to make them suffer kb, but just turn it up a notch to compensate.)

    3) Eagle Claw grants a nice +damage buff, which stacks beautifully with AAO. Eagle Claw/Shield Charge/Dragon Tail in a big crowd is pretty.

In addition, SD on a tank has the second best aggro-holding aura in the game (an icer beats you, barely), and OWTS makes you an Invuln tanker for two minutes at a time.

SD/MA is a very, VERY good combo. YMMV

Ehn, maybe I'm just pushing too hard with this build, I think I may be up against the limits of the system right now. (shrug)

So. How well did we do?

47 percent vs all? Yes! As a matter of fact, in a crowd (see:league) this build hits iCap for melee and ranged, and 58 percent for AOE. iCap! I am pleased.

More hitpoints? Yes! Can allllmost hit scrapper cap with OWTS.

More endurance? Yes! Ageless means I never get tired, and OWTS can bridge me as required.

More recharge? Yes! Incarnate powers load up recharge like crazy here.

More damage? Yes! Most attacks are double procced.

    ALL ACHIEVEMENTS UNLOCKED!

You guys rock, ty for the input.

    I'm very sorry. Some combo's are just...a little more...challenging.

If you want a good, fun, simple tank that's very durable but also fun, may I suggest:

elec/staff. TONS of AOE damage, and Staff's self-buffage is second to none. The more you attack, the tougher you get.

shield/martial arts. Much more single-target focused, but the defense and damage buffs from martial arts synergize superbly with shields powers.

fire/fire. Godlike at game launch. Godlike now. The damage of this combo is...good.

However, let's ask this: What kinds of toons do you like to play?

Hurl boulder and a few attacks from earth control/earth assault. You also have decent resists (capped with T9) to those attacks. That is MUCH less than what is left from the psi hole of other sets IMO.
Hurl boulder is a seriously dangerous attack. Pure ranged/smashing? Quite a few builds let that straight in. DE do a lot of it, along with ranged/toxic.

As for the OP's question? I will make the same suggestion I always do: Claws/Inv.

I rolled a claw/inv toon the first week the game was live, and I still play it regularly. Old School Nasty. Focus/followup/spin, and a lowby filler attack is all this combo needs or wants. Invincibility keeps them nice and close, and makes sure you never miss.

A claw/wp is similar, and makes for a smoother leveling experience, at the expense of a little less top end.

The important thing is to HAVE FUN.

    Ageless?

    Ageless....

Hrrrrrm. I have been quite concerned with end burn on this toon, but it simply never occurred to me NOT to take rebirth on a shieldy.

But if I don't.... Then my end woes vanish. Plus I get a nifty bump of recharge. And I still have OWTS as a hp/regen booster, mild though it is.

    This lets me dual proc....everything.

And it's not like I'll be delicate....

Musculature, not so much. I've never been a huge fan of Musc on scrappers.

I'll probably stick with Agility, it gets me the 47 percent I want, and a hefty chunk of recharge.

Ok, after much thought, here's yet another re-tweak, taking into account all this excellent advice.

Thank you for the excellent input, btw!

I assume this was because you couldn't fit in enough attacks?

Dangit, you guys have too much cool advice.

Actually, no I have incinerate on several toons and, for me, I find the DOT damage delivery to be frustrating. The DOT takes a glacial six seconds to fully apply, and that just makes me want to chew the scenery. Incinerate is best against AV's and similar bags of hitpoints, and I don't have much/any interest in soloing such critters.

Also, I am leaning towards 'pulse damage' mode with this toon, meaning, every 25-ish seconds, I run into the center of a spawn, hammer down a fireball/FSC/SC combo for roughly 1600 hp's, and then GFS a boss to death. The front-loaded damage is valuable to me.

The other thing I noticed is that with the inclusion of the Glad Armor 3% you have ~50% defence to all which leaves you with 2 options:
    • Drop the defence back down to ~47%
    • Push the defence up to 54%
I don't think leaving the defence as it is gives any particular benefit, but whichever option you take would probably lead to some significant changes.

Personally I would drop OWtS for Incinerate, 1 slot Fire Sword with the ATIO proc (Since it is global), replace that with an extra proc in GFS and drop RoF for Char (Which you can slot with Lockdown for some awesome defence bonus') and I would aim for 54% defence using Barrier to softcap.

Or I would still to that, but use Basiliks Gaze for the recharge instead of Lockdown and aim for 47% defence.

But either way there are probably significant changes you can make.
    Hrrrrrm. I am interested.....

I always aim for 95% against +3's and you are way over that with your accuracy slotting. So you could replace the odd IO's in FS, FSC and FBall with something that has less accuracy. Also I don't know the attack chain for fire but do you need the extra recharge from that IO? Looks like you might be better off with a proc.

Similarly things like swapping the acc/dam/rech for the pure damage in FS, FSC and FBlast might net you more damage without losing any worthwhile accuracy or recharge.

Swap the LoTG: Def/End in Deflection for a Cytoskeleton because the +hp is a wasted bonus.

Lasly I noticed no Glad Armor 3% which is strange considering the amount of purples in the build. That would significantly change the build.
Hmmm. All good points. I stuck in the Glad, apparently in one of my dozen tweaks I left it out by accident.

As for the oddball IO's, I'm really shopping for End reduction, and by reflex picked up some more acc and recharge.... But ya know, I think I like the idea of more damage. So, I swapped those for Dam/End IO's, which gives me more damage, more end reduction, and doesn't ding me much at all. This build is fast and has a lot of attacks, it's a bit different than how I usually set toons up.

Here's the fixed version: I'm glad I ditched my respec tonight in the middle now!

If you are even a little interested in the stories in these things (which I find actually fascinating, and make the activities in the iTrials a lot less confusing) then running them in this order is highly recommended, as later trials actively refer to earlier ones. Indeed, the TPN 'citizens of DOOOOOOOOOM' make very little sense at all if you don't follow the story. And wading through the TPN makes completing the MoM ever-so-much-more satisfying.

Also, you really should do an Apex/Tin Mage before running any of these. Old-school style is to craft the initial Alpha slot using Shards, even. Praetor Keyes directly refers back to the Apex/Tin Mage, for example.

Now, that said, once you have done this once, I find that by far, hands-down, the fastest and most efficient way to build T4's in everything (for now) is to farm TPN's. They are fast, simple, and give huge rewards compared to the time they take. (This is assuming you bother with T4's. I often do not. But I'm all lazy and stuff. )

If you find yourself short of VR salvage, you can mix in a few UG's to get that, as well.

The most important thing is to have fun!

Spawn density is admittedly higher (if the Atta mission is to be used as a benchmark), which might be why? Or some AE trick I'm missing.
The fire cave maps are pretty nice for a few reasons.

    1) HUGE number of spawn points, so you can maximize xp/load time.
    2) Can be set up with HUGE numbers of patrols, so the first intersection can net you a very large return without having to move at all.
    3) Stable glowie spawn point that's very close to the door.

These three things make it quite flexible.

If you're PL-ing, you get folks in and then start chewing. There are over 90 spawns on that map, so there's very little reloading/cat herding required.

If you're ticket farming, pick a patrol map, go to first intersection. When you get 700-800 tix, hit the mission ender glowie and recycle quickly.

I personally find the caves deadly dull, but to each their own.
  16. Well, I tinkered and squeezed and re-arranged, and managed to at least get softcap(45 percent) to all positions. And yes, I can get 47+ to everything with Phalanx Fighting....

My Grant Cover is actually a pretty darn nice buff, so I do have incentive to stick close to somebody in melee, but dangit, this is a scrapper. Scrapperlock happens.

Anyway, here's the latest round of tinkering, unless somebody has some ideas, I'm probably going to roll with this.

Well, I'd like 47 percent vs all positions, so iCap is one sm purp away.

I'd also like a bit more hitpoints and a lot more endurance.

More recharge and damage would be nice too.

Ehn, maybe I'm just pushing too hard with this build, I think I may be up against the limits of the system right now. (shrug)
  18. Howdy folks!

I am digging another old toon out for a refreasher, this time, an old fire/shield.

This is a beefy high-damage toon, but I never really jumped on the bandwagon for these back in the day.

However, with all the new goodies, I'm trying to update this, and I'm just not able to quite reach where I want to be. Please look this sucker over, and if anyone has any suggestions, please give them!

  19. Well, I rebuilt this toon. I have iCap vs all positions, and Afterburner is exactly as much awesome as I expected. Adding Rebirth to a top-end SR changes the entire dynamic of that powerset.

In short, I have been very, VERY pleased. Thank you all for your aid.

Now, that said, I have another old toon, not nearly as old as this one, that I am starting work on.

Does anyone have a current build for a max-damage fire/shield/pyre scrapper? I'm having troubles getting a build I like on this.

I'll post what I have, and if anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them.

  20. For single target damage, I've been pretty impressed with a dm/fire/soul brute. It also seems a rare combo, you won't run into many.

OK. That's possibly the most awesome homage toon I've ever seen.
  22. Daaaang, Hyper, that's a hella-nice stone/fire.

On my stoner, I went for resists and run speed, just to be contrary. It works pretty well, although the confuse/terror hole makes it pretty useless on iTrials. (sigh)

I'd rebuild it, but I got that great name....

  23. For my money, if you're looking pure support, the strongest toon out there is a cold/sonic. The reason is benumb. Power build-up, benumb, heat loss, sleet. Poof, no matter how hard the target, that pretty much settles things.

On top of that, you get the +end power, you get the heavy shields that do both _def and +resist (a little bit), you get the massive, massive levels of resist debuff which acts to directly multiply everyone's damage, etc, etc, etc.

But the real secret is power build-up, then benumb.

Here's the build I run on mine: If you have the means, I reccomend it highly.

I'm at work so I'm not going to crunch a whole lot of numbers, but I can give you a place to start. Softcapped defense gets you 95% mitigation (50% base defense + 45% extra = 5% damage gets through). Resist + defense is better than softcapped defense when it gives you better than 95% mitigation. These combinations all give 95% mitigation:

    45% defense, 0% resist
    40% defense, 50% resist
    30% defense, 75% resist
    25% defense, 80% resist
0% defense, 90% resist (remember, there's still that hidden 50% defense)

If you can get better numbers than these, you're doing better than softcapped defense.

This is why it's popular to use resist sets, by the way. Adding defense is extremely easy, so if you start with a set that lets you reach max resistance, then you don't need a whole lot of defense to surpass softcapped defense.

But to spare you the number crunching, Willpower by itself does not give quite as much mitigation as softcapped Energy Aura. Willpower with a lot of S/L defense is much, much better than softcapped Energy Aura for most content.

    Well, and succinctly stated.

Waaaaay back in the early days there was much discussion made over the 'immortality line', which was the damage stream which could be tolerated forever. I always liked the immortality line metric because it simply combines defense, resist, and healing into a single stat.

Of course, even that doesn't take into account buff/debuff/maneuver/status/time-to-defeat/etc effects, so it's not perfect.

    An example:

EA broot has 45 defense, 0 resist, for 90 percent mitigation. Heals 25 hp/sec. Thus, that toon can tolerate 250 points of incoming damage per second forever: At that amount of damage or below, they are immortal.

Wp broot has 40 defense, 33.3 resist, for 86.66 mitigation. Heals 50 hp/sec. Thus, that toon can tolerate 374 hp/sec forever. At that damage or below, they are immortal.

The nesting/stacking behavior of mitigation is more complex and more subtle than it seems, and is subject to fairly large swings with small changes near the inflection points.
  25. First: The dev's seriously need to address buff/debuff stacking.

Ok, got that outta my system.

A homogenous mix is always going to be optimized if you have buffs and debuffs. Resist and regen debuffs are the most potent, IMO. (Benumb is a powerful counterargument, though.)

So that narrows it down to rad and sonic, in my books.

A mix of fire/rads and fire/sonics would be close to the max possible. For flavor, toss in a rad/fire or sonic/fire.

More variety would be any combo of sonic/rad/fire/cold. A superteam with any mix of those on every toon would be FEARSOME.
