What to try

I've set a personal goal for myself, one 50 of each Base AT. Now, that turns out easier said than done, I've done a Blaster, Brute, Controller, Defender, 2 Domi (Domii?), Scrapper, a corrupter well on the way (47), a Stalker not far behind (45). That leaves, MM and Tankers.

I come to you oh master Tankers and ask for suggestions as to what power sets as a tank give a fun 1-50 experience. (i'm not looking for the 'best' sets, just something fun, as I've never managed to take a tank past lvl25)

Fire/Electric. Burn + Lightning Rod + Special Cool points for not going /SS!

Electric/Stone. +End/+Rech/Damage Aura meets End Heavy/Slow/ST focused. Match made in heaven.

Inv/DM. You win.

SR/TW and SR/Fire could be interesting.

DA/MA has lots of potential, as does DA/Staff.

Fire/Fire to melt mobs (lots of damage)

Shield/Electric to have some great burst damage (run into mob for AAO, Build Up, Lightning Rod, Shield Charge)

Electric/Mace for a very solid toon (strong resistances, heal, endurance drain, damage, knock up/knock down and stuns from Mace)

In fact Fire/, Shield/ and Electric/ primaries are my favs so anything with them

i have many tanks at 50...my next one i was thinking of a elec/tw tank.


however i must agreee with the fire/elec...thats tons of fun!!

Currently playing Dark/Fire and I must say, it's a blast and plenty survivable...toggle up and go...soft control with OG or CoF...Damage aura...lots of AoE and hard ST damage...good all around tank. I went Softcapping S/L/E/N and my resistances are about 80-85% to S/L, Neg and Psi runs about 90%...

Tanks are truly a different play experience.

Fire/electric is a high-damage tanker, lots of AOE and flashy effects. Good for solo, but can also easily be tough enough to handle nearly anything a team wants to tackle. An active playstyle, you'll be looking at healing flames quite a bit, and using attacks to mitigate your damage.

Electric/stone is a bit less damaging and a lot tougher, but much of the toughness comes from attacking. Less flash, but lots and lots of toppling bad guys. Reasonable solo, able to tank for any team doing anything except maybe toxic. Energize on a tanker is mighty, and never forget to use Power Sink as an attack, every time it's up and you have a crowd of bad guys.

Inv/dm is the tanker's tank. ST damage is acceptable, but the AOE is limited at best. In exchange? You will reach levels of durability you won't believe even after you did it yourself. Team mates are nearly a requirement on in inv/dm, but if you want the full-on 'immovable object' experience, this is hard to beat. The only thing that will mar the zen-like peace of your play experience is confuse/fear effects, and the leadership pool can even help out with that a bit.

Wow, what a question... Here's a list (in no particular order, other than grouped by the Primary) of Tanks that I've found to be quite fun to play.

Fire/Staff (fast leveler)
Fire/Fire (the ultimate "Burn" Tanker, lots of fire and flames, lots of fun)
Fire/Elect (as already mentioned a very active, lots of AoE fun combo)
Fire/Dark (a good solid leveler, with plenty of damage output)

Elect/Fire (one of my favorite combos, speed, FSC, End Drain, High Resists)
Elect/TW (lots of spinny knockdown and damage)
Elect/Dark (fast leveler)

Invuln/Stone (a very viable "Alpha" Tanker, lots of KD/tools for damage mitigation)
Invuln/Elect (fun set, especailly once you Lightning Rod)
Invuln/Dm (as mentioned earlier can be near unkillable)

Shield/Fire ("Crash and Burn" as in crash into mobs and FSC!)
Shield/Elect ("Crash and Boom")

Ice/Fire (very fun from start to finish, just gets better with IOs)

Dark/Fire (great for toon concepts, really comes into it's own with IOs (get Theft of Essence IO +for End as soon-as-possible (level 10-30 is the IO range for ToE)))

WP/* a good solid Tanker, I'm just not really into the Primary that much (Maybe when/if we get Rad Melee I'll roll another )

Stone/* a solid Tanker, level this one in teams and plan on IOing for Recharge and Speed.

SR/* Haven't gotten one too far yet, but I imagine it would be fun with most secondaries.

Aside from taking every AT to 50, I also want to take every tank armor set to 50.
My SR tank is 40 and that's the only set left. It's time for the devs to give us a new tank armor set.


Anyway, what kind of tank to play? Basically, any armor set is good enough to keep you alive without even trying (until you get to high-end content). If you've had trouble sticking with a tank before, you definitely want a combo that gives you at least one 'giggle power' - something that's really entertaining. To me, that's any power that sends a whole crowd of enemies flipping into the air - Foot Stomp, Shield Charge, Lightning Rod, Tremor, Spinning Strike, Burst, Dragons Tail, etc are lots of fun. It never gets old.

Some combinations are better for survival than 'excitement'. My WP/ice and invul/energy are really tough, but less entertaining than my shield/axe or electric/electric. My stone/stone is lots of fun - 95% of the time he simply doesn't need Granite but is heavily slotted for recharge and run speed so he can just clean house until he needs Granite up.

Do you like or dislike 'busy' sets? I can play my WP/ice in slow motion. My dark/dark needs me to be clicking a lot. I need the two self-heals to stay alive; I need to watch my END and use Dark Consumption, etc.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. After reading everything I decided to go with Elec Armor, seemed like that came highly recommended next to Inv and Fire, both of which I don't find interesting. For attacks I went with StJ. Mainly because I've not had the opportunity to play with it much yet.

Sounds like it ought to be capable. I have to admit that probably the most fun I've had with a character 1-50 was with my StJ/Inv scrapper... Street Justice is a lot of fun. Kick 'em in the nuts and send them flying straight up, then an uppercut to the nuts to finish them off. It's even more fun with a short character
