How Vital is Granite armor?

I've been working on a Stone Stone Brute and I've been toying with the idea of skipping Granite Armor. Mainly because I can't make a Crystal Granite Armor. Everythign else I can fit to his theme.

How important is Granite armor? Can I still be successful if I skip it?

With IO's yes, you'll still be plenty survivable. Your giving up great resists tho.

Skipping granite...while maybe..maybe you could still build a tough toon..its utterly idiotic. There is nothing a graniteless stoner can do that many many other sets cant, without the penalities in Stone Armour (the entire set I mean).
If you are not going to take it..roll something else.

What other set can you easily softcap S/L, E/N, and Psi while also having sick regeneration?

Um..Willpower? Well maybe not cap psi, but since it has psi resists...and also 'sicker' regen. With the added bonus of not looking like a moving turd? As well as being able to jump..and use travel powers.

Remember that defense without any resistance is setting you up for eggshell syndrome.

Basically you're running along, perfectly fine, until you're not. Then you're licking linoleum.

For S/L and F/C you're good. And with the paucity of psi, you're no worse off than any other player if something gets through.

But the deficit in E/N resistance can hurt bad. ESPECIALLY late-game and in Incarnate content. Tower-buffed Lord Recluse will wreck you.

Late game, defense debuffs (which are flying more freely) will also **** your world up.

Don't get me wrong. A granite-less tank can be built quite tough. But Granite is still a better option for everything save psi-heavy mobs.

Also, Stone's regen is not "sick". It's decent, but it's no Regen or WP. What makes it so useful is the layering of defense and resistance on top of it. This makes it FAR easier to keep ahead of incoming damage.

Here's a Graniteless tank.

Which is the tougher tank? Which can you pretty much walk away from in any mob and still be confident it'll be there when you come back?

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Daaaang, Hyper, that's a hella-nice stone/fire.

On my stoner, I went for resists and run speed, just to be contrary. It works pretty well, although the confuse/terror hole makes it pretty useless on iTrials. (sigh)

I'd rebuild it, but I got that great name....

If your theme is to constantly faceplant while looking like a huge pile of crap, then by all means go for it. All kidding aside, Granite Armor is then entire purpose of choosing Stone.

I have a friend. She rarely enters Granite Form even when we would duo stuff at +4/x8 (me on a scrapper typically not a buff/debuff character) and when she does in all probability the foo has hit the rotary oscillator in a big way. Catch is she is a Stone/Stone tank and not a brute, but she certainly spends most of her time running around NOT in Granite Armor. Will you be as tough without Granite, no but considering what scrappers and brutes can "tank", tackle solo and otherwise do silly scrapper tricks with IO builds I can't imagine it isn't possible to make a very capable, hardy brute without Granite (much as Hyperstrike posted). Might you be more min/maxed going with Willpower etc.. again maybe but if you want Stone no reason to think one can't make something quite capable.

Is Agility the best choice for an Alpha incarnate for Granite armor? It gives +end, +recharge, +defense, and +movement.

The Theme is the character is a corrupted Crey AI. I use the Crystal power customization setting to make it look like some irregularly shaped Tron like computer blocks. Same with his Stone Melee. I even went out and got the Pixel Aura to add that in and hes even got that Unified field cape all bundled onto an experimental Crey Powersuit he built specifically to escape Crey with. He is actually the only character I have that doesn't look right when he doesn't have his armor toggled on. No other armor set can pull off this look either.

Granite cannot pull off the Crystal look. If it could this discussion would be moot. Since I jsut made the character the discussion is still moot since I can't even get the power until level 38 anyway. If the whole point of Granite is to have Granite armor then it needs to be moved up the tier list a bit. I'm mainly concerned about late game. The guy is a Brute so I'm not intending to do alot of tanking. I have tanks for that. I've just never tried playing Stone armor before and I'm not sure how the rest of the set works.

How about using shield defense with the crystal graphic?

Alright Ill work with this. I've still got a ways before it is even an issue. Level 38 is a long ways off especially when I'm a bit iffy about Stone Melee. The character looks fun though so here is hoping

I didn't realize when I made the character that Granite was so static in the way it looks. Looking at it's stats it seems to debuff run speed and damage which seems odd for a Brute. and it also appears to debuff recharge which is already painfully slow on my Stone melee. It sort of looks like its a button that would turn my Brute into a tank. If I'm reading this right it also doesn't allow flight or jumping? Of course I think rooted has a similar issue. I suppose if I was playing a Tank then it would be more required from what I'm hearing and seeing so far. If a tank can get by without Granite as some of you have said then I'm sure a Brute can muddle through since killing things is how they mitigate damage

I've also looked at the crystal, or Gem shield, but it jsut doesn't look right. It might work as a computer block but the colorization is wrong and its too orderly lookign for the character.

the dmg debuff is easy to overcome with fury

the run speed debuffs arent too bad to overcome

on my dark stone brute i also got tactics in order to alleviate the confuse problem so the only hole he really has is psi and terrorize

below is the build i use, i built my toon to be in granite 99% of the time

some of the build is a bit hashed together since i had him 90% finished on build before i ever started using mids but it really works for me

you do realize you can have mulitple builds on the same toon right?? What I have generally seen stoners do, is to have one build for Granite Armor, and a second build for non-Granite Armor, the non-Granite Armor build being used for when leveling down for a SF/TF or using Oro. Its no joke that Stoners with Granite Armor are among the toughest, if not toughest critters around( granted a price is payed for it)

I am only emphasizing what has been said already for the most part...but...

Taking Stone Armor and not taking Granite Armor, is something akin to running Regeneration and not taking integration and/or fast healing. You are talking about forsaking the linch pin of the power set for looks. I can get behind a concept character...and I understand you want a very specific look...but Granite Armor is not a reason to take Stone Armor...it is the reason to take stone armor.

Based on what you're wanting to accomplish...the penalties are so high to get the right look from the powerset you're playing...this concept should maybe sit on the vine and ripen a bit longer. Maybe a powerset will come out with the right look later that will more closely fit your desired aesthetics and your desired result.

I know many people who have built 2 builds for their stone tanks...but keep in mind that's investing 2 toons worth of influence on 1 toon because you don't share the IOs between builds. That would solve your aesthetics and function issue, however, if it were me personally...I might wait and play that concept card later when I have something that better suits it. Stone armor is not a friendly set to play if you're not as hard as granite and, you better possess some very mighty MIDS build-fu skills. Otherwise your end result might likely be something you're not inclined to enjoy. Especially if you're talking about iTrials on this toon...

I have seen Stone tanks in Granite Armor get dropped by mobs throwing rocks in a TPN iTrial...seriously...without Granite...how well do you think you'd fare?

Out of curiosity. If it is THE lynchpin of the set. How am I supposed to get to level 38 without it?

With bonuses, fury, etc.........there is no reason you cant be a good moving, fast recharging, and high damage AT with granite on. You can do this without a kin. I tried it the other way.......didnt like life without granite.

It will be a long, slow but steady grind fighting mostly even con baddies...seriously...unless you PL...getting a stone armor toon to Granite is ridiculous. That's why you see mostly tanks do it, and rarely brutes...Tanks get Granite at 32 because it is their primary set...brutes wait until 38 because it's their secondary...there's reasoning behind that buddy. You see many stone brutes running around all the time? I sure don't...Stone Melee...some...Stone Armor...nope. Brutes want damage...and stone armor is a VERY hard set to make work if you want lots of damage AND the survivability it gives. You can do it all you want. If you want to play stone armor on a brute...kudos to you. If you want to play stone armor on a brute and skip Granite Armor...well...you can go sell crazy somewhere else...

I guess the bottom line is... what do you consider "successful"?

For many, particularly here on the forums, that means owning Incarnate content. That's not going to happen with a Granite-less Stone Brute. In fact, you're probably going to have to make compromises between Defense, Run Speed and Recharge so that even with heavy INF investment you may be short of some less demanding ideas of "successful". But in general, I think you will be satisfied.

Those who say the reason to take Stone Armor is Granite are right... if you're talking performance - especially on a Brute - but you can get enough out of Stone without it for a decent concept toon.

Out of curiosity. If it is THE lynchpin of the set. How am I supposed to get to level 38 without it?
Much the same way any other late-blooming character does (see: Controllers and pets, /SS tanks and Foot Stomp, Archery/Dual Pistols and their mininukes, etc). The game's easy enough that you can get to 38, or to 50+3 if you like, without using key powers. But you will definitely be less effective. It's not unplayable, but you are definitely sacrificing performance.

But hey, if it's what you want, you should at least give it a try. Based on your join date and post count, I'm guessing you're in the "vet respecs coming out of my ears" club, so worst case is that you decide you dislike it and respec into Granite after all.

Alternately, if you want a crystally guy, you could try making an appropriate costume and using a set like Invulnerability?

I've got a 47 Dark/Stone Brute. Granite was a game changer. Before it, I was barely at soft cap with a bunh of buffs thrown around. With it, I'm softcapped to 4 positions, and nigh res capped on everything. I respecced and kept Rock Armor and Minerals basically for fighting Carnies and even then I spen more time in Granite than out of it. Getting to 40 (I really feel you need to 6 slot Granite to get the most out of it), I was the brute that couldn't stay up. After 40, I pretty much only faceplant when I quit paying attention and that's mostly due to me not being finished IOing his build. For concept, whatever goes but if you want to be a concept character and effective you have to find a way to make Granite work with your concept. It is a crucial part of how /Stone works and changes the set from meh on survivability to OMFG how did I play this set without it.
