There's a longer story, and i'll post it in a second in the tech section, but suffice it to say that tonight, there's a new character name in town:
The Golden Calf
That's right, a golden cow-man. And he's a CEBR, so I'm gonna find out about this awesome brute thing. He's also got a bio. Explains his golden color, it's an electroplating thing to enhance his Energy attributes.
First thing. Right off. I am still, STILL amazed at how I get the names I want within 2 or 3 tries on any server, including Virture and Freedom.
So that's, uh.... 6. That's enough. -
Quote:You're right. My bad. I am so out of touch with Mac (which really means, PCs running Mac OS, now, so is it really a Mac? Another thread perhaps) that I am bashing for no good reason.Your knowledge abouts Macs is so good.
Macs use the same damn processors and etc. as a PC. The difference is that they can run Mac OS X (Pcs too but that requires doing some stuff that the average user may not want).
Pal, it's not that 'macs aren't good for CoH' - you're being ignorant here. It's the client that's a bloody mess.
I can run CoH and Rift (a 2011 game) on 2560x1440 resolution here on my Mac, all gfx settings turned to the max (ATI 6970M here). So yeah mac can run things other than Farmville. But that's on Windows, because, read well, the Mac OS X client is bad. I can run with max settings too but it will be less smooth and the client will lock up sometimes, which doesn't happen on Windows 7 - on the same Mac.
Ok that isn't exclusive to CoH, some other games are ported to Mac OS X via emulation tech and they don't always deliver, like CoH doesn't, but it's just sad the client is so bad. I prefer playing on W7 because of Mid's and etc but lots of people don't install Windows on their macs.
My extreme apologies.
Please substitute 'Mac' with 'OS X', then in my previous posting. Otherwise, I'm still standing by the recommendation: Get a real gaming computer...which is to say, I suppose, get a real operating system?
/No, surely that can't be right... OSX rules in a lot of other areas, even I know that. -

First... I don't understand. You had a wife who liked Co*, and you didn't have separate accounts so you could play together?
Odd. But then, being single, maybe I just don't get it. And that's ok. I just would think you'd wanna play together sometimes, if not a lot. Bonding and stuff, or some idocy like that.
Beyond that, though, whoever owns the account gets to decide the fate of the ex's toons. And asking us is... odd. Do with them what you will. -
I didn't use bind, per se, just set it in the keyboard settings, but I have the second tray, first slot, set with Teleport, then I bind Ctrl+C to it.
Then I also bound the Middle Mouse Button to the 'toggle mouse look'.
Now, in game, I click the middle mouse button to get the cursor, then use Ctrl-C, then left click where I wanna go.
Wait for the teleport cycle to complete, then do it again, until I get where I wanna go. Last teleport, middle mouse button and I'm back in mouse look.
'Flicking' back and forth 'tween mouse look/targeting is very easy, and I'm pretty good at TP.
/But then, I'm an oddity, most won't do it like me, I'm bettin'. -
My guess, he uninstalled it trying to fix the problem he's got now, Texas.
The thing to do, I'm understanding, is to use the trickle download... that is, launch the NCSoft launcher, then let it trickle download the client. DO NOT force the update, because what you're experiencing is what has happened to lots, including me.
Lesse, that post is somehwere.... Search isn't workin' good enough. Anyway, do the trickle, DO NOT force the update. Although I don't know how that works from scratch, it should just know that you want it, so let it just figure it out. THEN do a verify of the files (Consistency check.)
It should work then. At least, that's what the post said, basically.
If you've tried all that, well... perhaps your internet provider is an issue, or a AV/malware scanner is on, or you've got a bug... -
Folks, I'm using IE9, and this forum is NOT the only one that's forgetting me. Even my bank forgot my account loging pseduo name. That last gave me the heebie jeebies, and I started looking for answers on this.
Lookin' around, I'm leaning more towards either two things:
1) Virus/trojan/whatever deleting cookies in the hopes it can catch a password for something useful. I've scanned pretty good, though, there doesn't *seem* to be anything lurkin' about...
2) Protected vs not-protected mode of the browser (IE9). I've turned it off for testing, but am still relogging into everything... will know more later.
This could possibly also be a symptom of the compatible/non-compatible thing, but I don't have a broken page icon for this website... probably should look into that too, I'm really confused as to why that is, when I've got it set to let me choose... but it's not there. Hm.
Anyway, workin' on it, will pass on info soonest. -
I would plan on an ISO download of the client or something to get some people jumpstarted on getting the client installed, THEN force an update on it's first install so it's properly patched up.
Regardless of whether the game is updated or not, getting 3G of data from scratch, frankly, sucks a LOT.
The Updater isn't always a great idea, IMO, but that's just me.
/thinkin' of the others.
//I myself haven't ever had issues with the downloading from scratch, but so many do... -
To me, the BatWing doesn't look complete... and I therefore submit that we're only seeing the center section, the rest of it will be added later in CGI.
But that's just a guess. -
Quote:I like that question: What would happen if Ruby was done with? Hm. I'm thinking that, as I've envisioned Cerise, that she would simply continue being evil and hurting people. Her rage about Rodney would not, COULD not, be quenched with Ruby's demise. Only Rodney himself would 'fix' her, and he's gone.Well, let's hope she doesn't read my OP...
The thing, though, is that she HAS an apocalypse. A mission could be written in which she creates an alternate future where she did indeed 'win' by wiping out the rest of the globe. An end that springs directly from her own actions and ambitions. An arc could be written where she repeatedly makes the decision to wipe out more and more people until her goal is achieved.
I think I'll have to agree with you: capital V.
It does beg the question, however, of what would happen if she ended Ruby tomorrow. Would she stop, or would she continue wiping out everyone who annoyed her until there was no one left?
This also brings up the question of competence and ability.
I suppose that in order to qualify as a Villain, one must be able to utilize one's resources to accomplish one's goals unless stopped.
If Joe the milkman suddenly gets the desire to wipe out humanity, who cares? Not a Villain. Not, that is, until he gets ahold of a deadly bioagent he could then introduce into the milk supply...
Therefore, if she were to see the future world where she actually did wipe out everyone, leaving only herself... she'd think "Yes. Indeed, I am that powerful. I will succeed in showing everyone the fate Rodney had thrust upon him. I will show them *all*." And go back to her world and continue being her mad self.
I also think that, when she does finally end the world, literally, leaving only herself... She will simply think "There. I have finished. And yet, there is one remaining task..." And she'd off herself, to show the universe that she controls her fate... the last act of spite.
And she >can< do it(*). And she probably will, if not stopped.
Chick's messed up, man. Seriously.
/(*) - In my mind, anyway. She continues to become so powerful with Magic, eventually, not even a combined effort the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Pandorica Gambit (as I like to call it) will stop her. -
Let me put it this way for my main Villan, Cerise Dawn:
She would read your OP, and then decide that it's childish notions of 'Villain' need to be snuffed, and would end you. That's it. That's all.
Doesn't matter if you're right or not: She doesn't feel like being classified, and would hunt you down, because you're simply not worthy to classify her. No one is. She is Cerise Dawn, and that name alone should be enough of a classification.
I'd say that's Villain with a capital V, but hey, I'm biased.
Her Apocalypse, though, is this: She will wipe out every single person on this Earth if it would mean the end of her Sister, Ruby Dawn, the Heroine... and actively pursues that action. She doesn't care one whit about everyone else, nor how their being gone affects her in some way... Ruby has to die.
The backstory is... well, silly, I admit, but it's a backstory, and crazy evil can come from silly.
/Ok, short version: Rodney the pet Iguana kept her sane, in effect, but Ruby screwed up a Magic spell, and Rodney was gone. Cerise snapped, and has been insanely evil ever since. -
"MEANWHILE, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?"
"BLATANT CROSS PROMOTION"
Pure win right there.
/I want them to do a Powerthirst/Brawndo trailer now. That+Muppets has to equal Insane Bear Blasting Top Score.
//Win At EVERYTHING. -
One more to the list:
Dense
Massive was taken, this was the second choice. I'm happy with it.
/it's 8 foot tall, black on black on black with illium and toxic aura.
//And it's fun too. Grav/Energy dom. -
Regardless, it's still rudeness, and you gain no internets for it.
-
I managed to get Galaxy's Last Stan, in honor of the now-defunct former zone, and made him a Kin/Shield scrapper in golden armor. I started him on another server, and I decided I'll just reroll him on Exalted, and play him up there.
I then went ahead and got the Dawn sister's names, just in case.
Ruby Dawn, the Heroine,
Cerise Dawn, the Villain
Rose Dawn, the Vigilante
'cause maybe the sisters might move there one day... Still debating... been Pinns forever...
Other than these 4, don't really need anything else at the moment... and if I make another character on Exalted, I'm sure that, as usual, I'll get the exact name I want within a couple of guesses. Always do, so far.
As I never play as anything called 'houtex', someone can have that if they want, but just so you all understand, it's not me. -
Guess I don't do as much stuff in IP as I should, but I've never had a problem in there... always have a travel power by the time I get there, and I get about rather quickly.
The Shadow Shards, THERE's a need for some extra trams or boats. -

I had noticed his absence, but wondered if it was a retiring from the forums, the game, or...?
RIP, One of Us (as so well put by Turgenev, and an appropos title.)
/way too young at 32. -
Correct, at the time, this was the issue. But it wouldn't have mattered where they were, if you're being flung to, oh, Tibet and back, you're gonna have a sucky time of it.
Nothing wrong with Tibet, btw, but the round trip sucks. -
Preface: City of Heroes, all it's variants, is still, to this day, the worst thing I can think of to do to a computer, bar none. It stresses *every single component* of your computer, including the operating system itself. I use it to test and/or kill a computer if I think it's flaky. If a computer doesn't survive 30 minutes of just sitting about in, oh, Talos on Freedom, that computer is junk.
Having said that, you hopefully now understand why it's important that everything you can do to make Co* happy is required.
The problem, sir, is that it is usually one or more of these things:
>Your computer<
Your computer's operating system is borked, corrupted in some way, or being attacked by malware.
Your computer's background software is borked and/or too much of it stealing CPU cycles, which could include the above mentioned malware.
Your drivers, and there are more than just video card ones, could be corrupted, old, etc. Update them if needed, and a 'clean install' for the video and sound is definitely in order.
Your computer's hardware is borked, either a bad NIC, or slow, single core CPU, slow video card, motherboard flaking out, overheating, etc, ad nausem. Perhaps it's as simple as overheating due to being dirty, clean the computer. Or more serious, like leaked capacitors causing hang ups. You'll have to find that out on your own.
>Your local network<
As mentioned, bad NIC.
Or bad cable(s)
Or interference, esp. wireless, with the network's running ability.
Or bad router/switch/hub
Or bad modem/internet interface
Other device causing collisions/spoofing
>Your internet<
You have an inferior internet connection, dialup, satellite, cell.
Your ISP could, simply, suck overall.
Your ISP could be routing you to Tibet and back. It has happened.
>Server load<
Perhaps you're on Freedom or Virtue during a Rikti Raid or something massive such as this. Or the Imperious arc in the valley. All the time. I kind of doubt it, but has to be laid out there as a possible. Pick another server, or get away from the massive problem zone/map.
Any one or more of these *could* be the issue. With the exception of the gargantuan server load being not your issue, every one of these has to be investigated and dealt with if found to be the problem by you, and you alone.
Please see the stickies at the top and GO THROUGH THEM. Especially this one: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231628
If you haven't done them, then you are spinning your wheels, period.
NOT to brag... just an example: I *never* have issues, but that's because all of those issues above, I've addressed. So I just get to play, except those days that Co* itself is having server-wide problems, which overall are rare indeed.
If you feel you cannot, or won't, do the proper investigations into the potential 'whys' of your issue with Co*, then perhaps you need to hire someone to do it for you. It can be daunting, I admit, if you don't know every single one of these items and what to do to test them.
You may be surprised at how small a thing it may be, and how quickly it gets fixed. But finding that needle... -
I don't get it. You're an avid PvPer, but you're clicking powers instead of keyboarding them?
Beyond that interesting thing, you probably need to go through the sticky at the top of the forum and do a Liquid Plumbr on your computer, as well as inspect your network trafficing. Either there's something seriously bottlenecking your game in terms of CPU usage, or the network trafficing is bad. NIC, Cable, Switch/router/modem, ISP... server routes...
There was, a few whiles ago, a guy from Alaska who was getting routed through Japan or something before coming back to California... and was having the exact same issues as you seem to be. He called his ISP with is Pingplotter results, and they fixed their routing issues, got him direct to CA, problems sovled.
Oh, and if you're on dialup or satellite or such... good dang luck with that. -
I'm in on the Super Group, which server?
-
Yeah, I'm lookin' forward to the day that these words are censored:
nuts (a delicious food)
bananas (a delicious fruit)
fruit (delicious food group)
***** (in the armor)
spade (as in hearts, clubs, diamonds)
retard (as in timing)
****** ("Throw another ****** on the fire, would you?") (which is, bluntly, some wood. Look it up.)
Belgium (If you don't know, you need to, it's one of the most vile, disgusting words in the Universe.)
Barbara Streisand. 'Nuff said (if you know of South Park, that is.)
and a few others, I'm sure.
/edit: Oh, look, there's two already.
//just saying... it could happen. -
It's become a thing I do, to tell a person on their birthday, "Oh, Happy Birthday! Well done on your 592 Million Mile journey!"
And then I get the tilted "confused dog" head look. I'm bettin' some of you did that just now. I can explain! Honest. Ready?
For this example, you are standing still. You are at 30 Degrees North Latitude on this Earth (namely Houston, TX area.) At this location, the rotation of the Earth means you will travel 21,565 miles in a day, again, just standing in one place. In a year (which is technically 365.25 for Leap Year purposes), this is 7,876,616.25 miles. Now, we might can go ahead and round up to a simple 7.9M miles because it's entirely possible a person can move about the 23383.75 miles it would take to make this up. So 7.9M it is.
Now, the Earth itself orbits the sun, and in that same year, you can add another 584M miles, for a total of 591.9M miles, which I just simply rounded up to 592M, because, honestly, it's geeky to say that 1.9 bit.
The Solar System we're in happens to also rotate about the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. In a year, that's another 4.510 BILLION miles, and with the 592M miles, we've moved 5.102 Billion miles so far in a year.
Not done yet though, because the Milky Way is movin' through this universe towards the Andromeda galaxy. It's velocity moves us another 5.838B miles in a year. Please note, this is just the Milky Way's movement, the direction *happens* to be towards Andromeda, but Andromeda's movement is not part of the equation.
We've now moved a total of 10.94 Billion Miles in a year... and there's more. The Local Group, of which the Milky Way, Andromeda, and various other galaxies and globular clusters are part of, overall has a movement in the direction of the Hydra Constellation. This movement adds up to another 11.746 billion miles in a year.
Total so far? 22.686 Billion miles a person has traveled in a year, approximately. And techically speaking, we're not done! There's the Virgo Cluster movement, but at this scale, it's just not possible to come up with really good numbers anymore. I mean, an observable universe with a diameter (that we know of) of 93 billion light years (or 545,868,419,328,000,000,000,000 Miles) and you see how there's probably gonna be a big swing of +/- errors induced by the time we get to the Virgo Cluster's scale of things.
Besides, at 22.686 Billion miles a year, I'm just plain tired of movin', aren't you?
/Nerd moment? Yeah. But I did the work, wanted to put it somewhere.
//592M miles is plenty enough for most.
///Mods: If this is in the wrong place, well... can ya find it a good home? Thanks.
////Figured if the Walken thread lives here... -
Been some good ideas here! It's an interesting problem, I think, which is why I started the topic.
Ok. It's obvious that there's a lot of issues with trying to garner 0 DMG. Fair enough. So... perhaps, as the character levels up past, oh, 20 or so, there is a small amount of damage allowed... perhaps through a storyline of 'mixing' powers or other retcon type story.
I don't much like changing rules, but maybe it'll help further build ideas... so, if it helps, simply minimize the damage output so that the character is still rather completely dependent upon a team to get XP, but contributes very well to the team's efforts by debuffing or buffing or healing or what have you.
The character then can take a potshot or two, but it still 'gimped', as it were, without being on a team, where their talents shine and make the team just that much more awesome.
I like the last two builds though, very nice. Ice/Kin, eh? I went Ice/Rad, but I think I like the Kin one better.
