Horrible Lag

Hey guys, ive had horrible lag all weekend starting last friday. It comes and drops my FPS to about 10, then about 20 minutes later it disappears for a while just to come roaring back again. It all seems random with no set time frames. I have nothing major running in the background that I didnt have running before. My internet isnt being used up and my CPU usage isnt getting pegged during this either. I can run any game on my PC without any lag issues so pretty sure its not me. Problem is, everyone i talk to in game dosent seem to be having the lag or be bothered by it if they are.

I have no idea whats causing the problem but its made the game pretty much unplayable. Worst part is it all just started at once. I had no issues last week and suddenly it got bad. Is anybody else having similar issues or did maybe something happy to my computer that could have caused it without my knowledge. I dont think its my PC since sometimes the game runs perfectly smooth at well over 60 FPS.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've also been experiencing this. A week ago, I experienced it twice, and now today, I experienced it again. Interestingly enough, while at first I thought it was random, the lag today occured on one of the exact same characters I played during one of those two instances of lag.

Well, i still am getting horrendous, unplayable lag. Ive tried new display drivers and everything, for some reason this game just started giving me bad lag for no good reason.....

Someone suggested to me "/netgraph 1" but it looks pretty even, but I really don't know how to read the thing. In any case, I wonder if this is somehow related to the so-called "stability issues" they've been patching for.

What does /netgraph 2 look like?

If it happens again, I'll have a look.

Okay, it happened again and Netgraph 2 looks very spikey.

Edit: And the lag won't seem to go away now. It's present as soon as I sign in now.

Hello? Can't play the game here.

When I have lag, it is mostly related to my internet connection, and many times my router. So if I experience lag I usually start by resetting my router, as in switch off and then back on.

Just an idea to verify that it isn't because of that.

Well, it's happening again, once more without rhyme or reason. Unplugged my modem to turn it off (since there's no power switch on it) then plugged it back in. Still lagging.

So no, not it.

I know in the past some lag issues can be tied to a hard drive that hasn't been defragged lately.

The fact you are getting repeatable spikes makes me even more strongly to suspect it.

Try downloading the Auslogic drive defragging tool. It has 2 options on the drop down - Defragment and Optimise.

With all of the recent changes and patches - I would try to Optimise the drive you have running CoH and see if that helps.

I'm not going to download some strange software I've never heard of to do something that my computer already has a tool for.

Auslogic makes a good defrag program, have you heard of PCWorld Mag? They reviewed it here, http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...scription.html

The option to move big files to the outside of the platter, (making for faster access), is just one of it's benefits over the windows defragger.

Have you tried taking the router out of the loop? If you still have problems after connecting directly to the pc, then run a trace route to see where you might be losing packets. I've used ping plotter, but there are other, "less strange" ways to do that too.

No.

What?

Okay, having a look at my Defrag, it seems I've always had it on an automatic schedule, so a fragmented drive is not the issue. In fact, the last time it ran was yesterday.

And the game is lagging again today. Any other, REAL solutions, people?

Preface: City of Heroes, all it's variants, is still, to this day, the worst thing I can think of to do to a computer, bar none. It stresses *every single component* of your computer, including the operating system itself. I use it to test and/or kill a computer if I think it's flaky. If a computer doesn't survive 30 minutes of just sitting about in, oh, Talos on Freedom, that computer is junk.

Having said that, you hopefully now understand why it's important that everything you can do to make Co* happy is required.

The problem, sir, is that it is usually one or more of these things:

>Your computer<
Your computer's operating system is borked, corrupted in some way, or being attacked by malware.
Your computer's background software is borked and/or too much of it stealing CPU cycles, which could include the above mentioned malware.
Your drivers, and there are more than just video card ones, could be corrupted, old, etc. Update them if needed, and a 'clean install' for the video and sound is definitely in order.
Your computer's hardware is borked, either a bad NIC, or slow, single core CPU, slow video card, motherboard flaking out, overheating, etc, ad nausem. Perhaps it's as simple as overheating due to being dirty, clean the computer. Or more serious, like leaked capacitors causing hang ups. You'll have to find that out on your own.

>Your local network<
As mentioned, bad NIC.
Or bad cable(s)
Or interference, esp. wireless, with the network's running ability.
Or bad router/switch/hub
Or bad modem/internet interface
Other device causing collisions/spoofing

>Your internet<
You have an inferior internet connection, dialup, satellite, cell.
Your ISP could, simply, suck overall.
Your ISP could be routing you to Tibet and back. It has happened.

>Server load<
Perhaps you're on Freedom or Virtue during a Rikti Raid or something massive such as this. Or the Imperious arc in the valley. All the time. I kind of doubt it, but has to be laid out there as a possible. Pick another server, or get away from the massive problem zone/map.

Any one or more of these *could* be the issue. With the exception of the gargantuan server load being not your issue, every one of these has to be investigated and dealt with if found to be the problem by you, and you alone.

Please see the stickies at the top and GO THROUGH THEM. Especially this one: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231628
If you haven't done them, then you are spinning your wheels, period.

NOT to brag... just an example: I *never* have issues, but that's because all of those issues above, I've addressed. So I just get to play, except those days that Co* itself is having server-wide problems, which overall are rare indeed.

If you feel you cannot, or won't, do the proper investigations into the potential 'whys' of your issue with Co*, then perhaps you need to hire someone to do it for you. It can be daunting, I admit, if you don't know every single one of these items and what to do to test them.

You may be surprised at how small a thing it may be, and how quickly it gets fixed. But finding that needle...

Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012

Well, I'm beginning to think it really does have something to do with my connection to the game. As I've made clear earlier, it doesn't happen all the time. Most days, CoH is purring like a kitten, and then on the occasional day (like today) it lags on me. It's a very recent occurence too, since it pretty much just started early last month.
