  1. This error message occurs when the GPU hangs (or crashes) in response to either a driver bug or a hardware failure. It is also possible for OpenCL and DirectCompute application bugs to trigger this (City of Heroes does not use either of these).

On versions of Windows before Windows Vista, this would have resulted in a Blue Screen of Death, but newer versions of Windows require drivers to be able to reset when the GPU crashes instead of forcing Windows to reboot. Unfortunately, 3D applications are not able to automatically recover after this occurs and need to be restarted.

If you set Windows' virtual memory paging file (swap) to a value 2GB or larger, the /3GB option will also work on machines with only 2GB of physical RAM installed.

This is not City of Heroes specific, but applies to all 32-bit applications running on Windows:

    * Running a 32-bit version of Windows will give 32-bit applications at most 2GB of RAM to use.

    * If you boot a 32-bit version of Windows with the /3GB boot option enabled, 32-bit applications are given up to 3GB of RAM to use.

    * If you run a 32-bit application under a 64-bit version of Windows, the application will be able to use up to 4GB of RAM.

Turning on the /3GB boot option can definitely help applications in out of memory situations, but you need to be careful changing your boot settings as you could render Windows un-bootable if you make a mistake.

    That looks like JSON format.

This isnt a HUGE deal, I mainly play my MM so my bots can still take care of business or the most part, but its freakin annoying.

It was REALLY bad before updating my GPU (Radeon HD 5870 laptop GPU).

Any idea's what could be causing this? I read the common FAQ's about it, but what it describes seems like it would be a constant issue, and I dont have any of those background programs running except Skype.

    Network buffer measurements (?):

Uplink 1700 ms, Downlink 740 ms

We estimate your uplink as having 1700 msec of buffering. This is quite high, and you may experience substantial disruption to your network performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large uploads. With such a buffer, real-time applications such as games or audio chat can work quite poorly when conducting large uploads at the same time.
We estimate your downlink as having 740 msec of buffering. This level can in some situations prove somewhat high, and you may experience degraded performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large downloads. Real-time applications, such as games or audio chat, may also work poorly when conducting large downloads at the same time.

    What should I do?
The only important part is the above. This means your network connection has up to 2.5 seconds of lag. The issue will not affect downloads or web surfing, but will be a pretty big problem for online gaming.

The problem is either going to be with your router (if you have one at home) or with your ISP. An easy way to tell would be to temporarily remove your router and re-run the test with your computer plugged directly into the internet. Make sure you have a firewall and virus scanner installed and working when you do this so you do not get infected.

If you get a chance to try this, post another permalink with the direct connection results.

If the problem ends up being with your ISP, getting them to fix it might be difficult.

Repairing seems to work a bit better now than before.
Is this over a wireless or wired connection?
  11. Next this happens, can you run Netalyzr and post a permalink with your results?

After playing with the options, I can find no way to get rid of the annoying (and incorrect) message.

The message is incorrect because neither City of Heroes nor its updater in any way needs administrative access to the system to function correctly. CoH can be easily installed into a directory that has change permissions for an unprivileged user, and it stores all its settings under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Even without the crash, I'd consider it a security bug that the launcher is pestering users to give it more access to the system than it actually requires. Don't perpetuate the run-everything-as-admin fallacy that so many Windows programs fall victim to.

The old cohupdater functions perfectly in this configuration on both Windows XP and Windows 7 (after tweaking UAC on Windows 7 to not stupidly assume cohupdater.exe needs admin rights because of the file name).
What directory do you have City of Heroes located in?

If -renderthread affected your mouse before, that's the first I've heard of it at least.
-renderthread 1 is the default now, you can pass -renderthread 0 if your video card driver is buggy and crashes.

The only option that should affect the cursor is -compatiblecursors 1 which you can set in game in the options menu. Since options are not shared between live and test/beta you probably need to set it for the other two.

Performance delta is around 20% to 40% depending on the game according to notebookcheck.net

  17. Windows 7 consumes more RAM than XP, how much does your machine have?
  18. Just a note, the reason this happens is that IR driver appears to force your keyboard into Japanese mode for some reason. There are a couple other wireless keyboard drivers from Microsoft that appear to do the same thing for some reason.
  19. Disabling Catalyst AI on the 4870x2 is supposed to disable SLI for X2 cards. I haven't tried it for the last few driver releases, but it used to work in the past.

So, let me make sure I understand this: in Windowed Mode, on your laptop, the game is running normally with no graphics lag or other issues?

I'm honestly not sure what to make of this development. Such behavior would normally indicate a driver error or an API issue.

Laptops tend to throttle themselves when overheating rather than crash like an older desktop would. Fullscreen mode also should be able to take full advantage of the video card instead of having to share it with the rest of windows.

I know of problems where the M17x can throttle when the temperatures get too hot, it is possible that the M15x is also affected. Often the ambient temperature in the room can make the difference as well. This is easy to test if you have air conditioning.

That's a crossfire configuration. Games will only leverage both GPU's when they support Crossfire.
The older 3870x2 cards handled CrossFire directly on the hardware and did not necessarily require games to support it. The 4870x2 and later changed this to require software support.
  22. After trying Rent's steps above, which downloaded the latest cohupdater.eu.exe and cohhpdater_ui_win.dll to my desktop. I then had to copy the executables from my desktop to the City of Heroes folder. After doing that, using my existing icon would work and I no longer had to repeat the process each time. Does that work for you as well?
  23. Pressing Alt-Tab, followed by Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then Escape usually works for me in Vista and Windows 7 when running fullscreen mode.
