SEVERE graphical lag after this last patch...

Back_Blast

Two days ago, CoX was running like greased lightning (the "low" Ultra Mode) here on my new Alienware M15x laptop. No problems whatsoever (except for the fact that I'm deployed and this ISP run by AAFES can be tempermental at times but that's neither here nor there nor can be helped by NCSoft or Paragon...)

Anyway... There was a patch downloaded today (or yesterday?) and now CoX is having SEVERE Graphical lag. So bad I feel like I'm playing on an old Pentium computer. Is there anyone else having this problem? And what can I do to fix this?

I've already confirmed that I have the latest version of my drivers.

For me, there was a patch today, and it has made no significant difference.

Maybe, but just maybe, my framerate is slightly lower, but actually I don't think so.
Computer wise I have a different setup, as I'm playing on a tower with Windows XP and ATI HD 5770, and Ultra settings rather high.

I'm having issues getting GPU-Z off the website. Whenever I try to click on one of the download links, I get a message saying something like, "Please do not link directly to our links"

For starters, here my HiJackThis log file:

This is the 64 bit version of Win7. My CPU is an i7 820QM. My Graphics Card/GPU/whatever is an nVidia GeForce GTX 260M.

Obviously, I can clean some of the services and unnecessary software out. But what gets me is the game was running perfectly until this last patch...

"C'mon! We can take 'em! There's only 947 of them!"

I don't know what happened but now CoX is running perfectly again. I have no idea what I did (or didn't do...?)

I generally run defrag after every update but I don't see how that would effect the game...

At any rate, thanks for the help and if this happens again, I'll definitely let you guys know.

good to hear then.

I use Defraggler . Right after a patch/update, the worst fragmented things are 99% COH items. (This program lists exactly what the frags are.) I think it does help to do this before entering the game...has been working for me.

OK, now this is ticking me off. This afternoon, CoX is lagging again and I have no idea what the [BLANK] is causing it.

(BTW I use Defraggler too and I LOVE it!)

Incidentally, Can somebody tell me why I have so many lines marked with "(file missing)"?

Hmmm...

The Alienware site said the drivers were up to date...?

Off to nVidia I go. and thanks for the link.

If Nvidia doesn't have drivers for your mobile card you can get them from Omega Drivers. I don't know if Nvidia has laptop drivers on their site but ATI doesn't.

I stand corrected, it seems Nvidia does indeed have the drivers on their site.

nVidia.com says the driver for my GPU is current...

Actually, ATi does.

For NT6 systems ATi offers a current OpenGL 3.x+ / Dx10+ driver:
32bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-32.aspx
64bit: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-64.aspx

For NT5 systems, ATi offers a reference OpenGL 2.x / Dx9 driver based on the 9-3 legacy driver release:

So it's not letting you install the 197 driver series?

Thing is, your notebook is using the 186.47 release, which was not an Nvidia release. Nvidia's mobile 186 drivers were the 186.03 on June 9, 2009, and the 186.81 on August 27, 2009.

Oh bloody hell... 134 MB... This is going to take a while...

I'm D/L'ing the driver from the link you gave me. Curious that under "supported products" it has my GPU there but when I ran the scan before, it said my drivers were up to date...

We'll see what happens...

Okay. I sort of covered this in the sticky thread. Windows Update isn't the only one that will tell that your drivers are up to date when they are not. Most web-based "are your drivers up to date?" services have sound properties normally associated with Hoover or Electrolux.

This is why I "like" the GPUZ output since I can compare the driver revision reported with the driver revision that the vendor has actually released.

Well, I just reformatted a WinXP laptop with an ATI X700 Mobility card and the ATI drivers from their page and supposedly for that card refused to install saying that the card was unsupported and to get drivers from the manufacturer (Sony). Unfortunately the newest drivers Sony had for that model were over 2 years old so I went to Omega and snagged the latest drivers there.

I guess from that experience that ATI's laptop drivers are... spotty in weather they'll install or not. The Omega drivers worked perfectly; I understand they're the same as the ATI ones with a changed install program that doesn't care if you're installing on a laptop.

Call Me Awesome: actually the Omega drivers do the same thing this program does: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php They add the list id's in to recognize by chipset, not vendor id, much like the Linux drivers. You'll also still only be running the 9-3 driver version.

There's still the problem that the x700 you have is on the legacy list, and NOR is the vendor included in the list of those supported. As a note, the following vendors have submitted their hardware changes back to AMD/ATi and are recognized by the installation software.

* Alienware
* Arima
* Clevo
* ECS
* Eurocom
* Falcon Northwest
* FIC
* Fujitsu Siemens
* HyperSonic PC
* Mitac
* MSI
* NEC-CI
* Pro-Star
* RockDirect
* Sager
* Uniwill
* Velocity Micro
* VoodooPC

Note: Sony is not anywhere in that list.

It is done.

And my framerate STILL sucks. I figure the only solution I have now is to drop the graphics to "minimum" and play that way, which completely defeats the purpose of why I bought this laptop to begin with and irritates me to no end...

okay. Star, that we have your drivers up to date, we need to start troubleshooting the other aspects of your platform, so lets start with the hardware you are using:

Desktop Nvidia: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=7

Mobile Nvidia: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=98&pgno=7

The GTX 260 Mobile only has a fill rate of 30,000 megatexels for it's shader performance. This is actually lower than the Desktop 9800 GT, the starting point for Ultra Mode graphics. It's Texture performance is also lower than the Desktop 9800 GT.

Basically, a Desktop GTS 250, which is far more powerful in both Shaders and Textures than the mobile GTX 260 struggles to push Ultra Mode in 1680*1050, which I suspect is the native resolution of your laptop.

***

What I suspect happened is the latest patch automatically set higher shader values than your card can normally push, and the card is increasing it's core-speed to try and compensate. The higher clock-rates are pushing the thermal controls (which Nvidia has issues with to start with).

However, I need to test this thermal theory.

Can you put City of Heroes in Windowed Mode and run GPUZ ontop of it (you can set GPUZ to "always be on top" in the upper left hand icon).

I have done what you asked and lo and behold, CoX is running normally in windowed mode! I captured the images like you asked but Photobucket reduced the sizes when I uploaded them.

Incidentally my default resolution is 1920x1024 so the pics are a little large. If you still want to see them, got any ideas for a (free) hosting provider that doesn't downgrade picture size?

okay! getting somewhere!

So, let me make sure I understand this: in Windowed Mode, on your laptop, the game is running normally with no graphics lag or other issues?

I'm honestly not sure what to make of this development. Such behavior would normally indicate a driver error or an API issue.

also: you can email the pics to mepisguides at gmail dot com.

Photobucket does allow you to upload images based on file size, not resolution, but Photobuckets new interface is one of the reasons I switched to using Picasa for embedded image hosting and linking. PicasaWeb has it's own issues in that there is, as of yet, no way that I can find to hotlink to the fully sized picture. I can direct link to the full sized picture, but then you have to magnify and mouse/scroll around it inside the picasaweb viewer.

Correction: I found that the text s1600 could be used in place of the existing s400 / s800 options to link to a full sized image.

Imageshack rocks!

Anyway, here's the pics (they're kind of large - 1920x1024):

And yes, CoX is running perfectly in windowed mode. Methinks I shall play this way from now on ;-)
