I20 and NCsoft Launcher

When: Tuesday April 5, 2011, 9:30 AM EST

Problem: When I opened and clicked City of Heroes (live) in NCsoft Launcher, it asked me if I want to repair. I then clicked "Repair" and it began downloading a very huge file, then I canceled it. It told me that if I canceled it I will have problems with the launcher and if the Launcher says "Play Now" it is not really fixed.

Me being a noobie at all this tech stuff, I ignored it. I then copied the beta folder to my Live folder. Re launched NCsoft Launcher and it says "Play Now" instead of "Update". I clicked it and it started playing. The servers are down so I have no idea if it works fine.

Another Problem: I lost City of Heroes Beta and City of Heroes Test in my NCsoft Launcher. Now I don't know what happened. I don't know what to do.

How do I get my Beta back without downloading huge files? Can someone test this if I'm the only one.

On another note. I patched my two daytime play machines and now neither one will work. On one machine I get "the procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernel32.dll"

On the other I click play now, the blue bar fills up, and then nothing happens.

BOTH machines were logged in and online until 5 minutes before the servers went down. The kicker is that the one I get nothing on will load the test server fine, but it will not launch the live version.

Is this related to the SP3 issue?

this is the exact error i am also getting, after multiple attempts to log in. i selected the " verify all files" option several times but this did not have any effect, in as far as curing the problem.

game worked fine pre-patch , but so far i am unable to get past this error. it may be due to the servers being down atm, but before now i have always been able to at least get to the log in screen whether they were down or not, but now i get this error at launch screen and can't get any further and Game " quits out" after i get this error message bar.

i am assuming since two of us have this exact error message / issue, it will become more widespread- anyone found a fix yet?

ah crap, I'm on SP2. Installing SP3 now. I hope it doesn't break anything as I use the machines for work as well.

This launcher is stupid

Thanks

How on earth are so many people still running XP SP2?

SP3 has been available for 3 years now and SP2 hasn't been supported (i.e. no security updates) since July 2010.

Running software that out of date on a primary device is reckless at best.

so- i got to update to SP3 in order to run the game due to the new launcher / patch i20 content , when it ran fine beforehand. well, my machine goes haywire when i try to do that , so since there isnt a simple option to remain with the old launcher, and i cant seem to get SP2/3 to " take" on my machine, after playing since 2009 , i 'm going to have to cancel?

thats fine, WoW here i come again - i really dont need problems being created for me i get to beat my head on my desk to solve in order to play a paid subscription Game-

the old launcher was just fine- now with this new one and no " stay with old one" option, and my isues with updating successfully to SP3 , i either have a headache for hours battling the issue and downloading this and that , or selecting a 2 min process "cancel account / billing" key.

pretty simple choice for me -

Hint: Dont engineer problems in- if SP1 would pull the launcher perfectly fine, why code in something that requires SP3 ? if it aint broke, dont fix it.

To this day, SP3 bugs on install roughly 50% of the time. An issue that Microsoft is well aware of but has largely ignored. Many people have avoided SP3 for the very reason that half the time installing it bugs Windows to a point where either rollback or complete system re-install is required.

Updating anything that has the Microsoft logo on it is reckless at best.

1) The old updater still works fine - for the time being at least.
2) Because SP2 has been out of support for almost a year now, SP3 has been out for 3 years and there are two more recent versions of Windows in the wild. At some point you have to accept that support for older platforms will need to be dropped in order to take advantage of new features offered by more recent platforms.

Not to downplay your problems, but if the old updater was still "just fine" they wouldn't be having us use the new one. I'm happy for the faster download/patching times.

Just like with graphics, they can try to make sure those with older cards and slower connections can still play, but at a certain point, they can't reasonably be expected to throttle down just to keep a few people playing. The longer it's been since the latest service pack for XP was released, the weaker your argument becomes. That's progress, and it happens everywhere.

The plural of anecdote is not data, but I oversaw the update of circa 2000 machines from SP2 to SP3 at work via WSUS without any notable issues. Was about 2.5 years ago mind.

Microsoft really need to start making slipstreamed ISOs generally available (you can already get them via Technet/MSDN/MVLS), because they make life a lot easier (and rolling your own is tedious, if fairly straightforward).

In the industry in which I work (legal), there are a lot of applications that do not play well with SP3.

By installing it on this machine, I will now have to get a new drive and reinstall. These are my "slow day at work"/lunch time play machines.

Funny that you should say something like this today. I was just over working on my dads computer and found that it didn't have SP3 installed. The automatic updates never downloaded it to his computer (I built his computer, so I know they were turned on.) I spent the rest of the day downloading all the updates that should have already been installed.

Ugh ugh ugh. I HATE software in small / mid-size businesses. They get it made bespoke from a feckless developer who eventually ceases to update the thing, forcing businesses to keep using outdated systems. Microsoft can't be expected to cater for all of these old bits of software running on systems that have been unsupported for years, whether businesses need them or not.

'Course, that still doesn't excuse people using IE6. There's a special place in hell for that.

World of Warcraft- a much newer Game, runs just fine on SP1.

i fail to see how the launcher for a much newer ( and might i add more code - complex and graphically superior) Game can use a launcher SP1 friendly , while CoH " demands" per some posters here, a feature only offered in SP3.

i doubt it

to those who think " newer is better" , i guess you are choosing to overlook the Vista fiasco
i wouldnt trade 1 copy of XP for 10 of the bug riddled and disastrous Vista.

my point is this- the game worked fine yesterday- it wont run today.i dont need the headache.i still say if it aint broke , dont fix it , the object when offering a service is to design it to where it is available to the widest possible audience, as painlessly as possible.

this is like being refused an oil - change on your 2004 model, you need to "upgrade to the 2011 model" since your car is no longer warranty supported. if i'm paying for the oil change...

oh well, you get the point - all i'm sayin is this was needlessly created hassle, and we are not amused.

Yep, both in the Microsoft knowledge base and from personal experience. I, too, manage a large number of PC platforms for side work (back when SP3 first came out, and again recently). It's true, if you update the computers via HD cloning or network push you can do an upgrade to SP3 with not a single problem in most cases. But when manually upgrading a single computer through Windows Update the bug rate and/or fail rate is usually about 50% (that number I am estimating from personal experience - so don't get your panties in a twist about its accuracy, realistically it's probably a lower percentage to some degree). The reason for this is that the problem originates usually in the download corrupting, which then requires a manual deletion of the download files because Windows Update only verifies the quantity of the files downloaded, not the quality, so if your download corrupts Windows still considers it a "working" package and Update will not give you the option to re-download or verify until the package contents are removed from the system.

Also, as mentioned above, but un-related to my statement, many choose not to upgrade because after 3 years there are still a host of programs that have no support for SP3. Sure, you can blame those companies for that, but the fact remains you have the choice of upgrading to something and losing program control or not upgrading. It's a bit annoying that - of all things - it's a video game that comes along and requires you to upgrade to something that hinders your productivity and potentially your system.

WoW is less than six months newer than CoH (WoW - Nov 23, 2004, CoH - April 27, 2004).

What's likely happened is either Paragon Studios updated the compiler tools they are using and programs compiled with them now require SP3 to work or the NCSoft Updater, which will eventually be required, and developed by "someone" at or for NCSoft requires SP3. Either/or, SP2 is considered unsupported by Microsoft last year so there is no reason NCSoft should officially support it.

They did the same thing with Win 98SE a few years back when Microsoft ceased support.

So you basically tellingme i cant play this game anymore? because of the ncsoft launcher adjustments? wtf kinda crap is that? The games been running just fine without spk3, shoot i dont even have sp2. and the game was running fine. Microcrap (microsoft, IS WAK). I just paid for 3 months of this game and now i cant play? really? REAAALLY?! youve got to be kidding me.

As far as I can tell the reason for the new launcher is to get everyone nice and compatible with each other, all using the same launcher, for the server list merge.

Personally I find nothing redeemable about the new launcher as it now takes approximately TEN times as long to download the same amount of data as the old one did (are you hearing this NCsoft? What was a nice 3 minute download now takes me 30 mins).

I remember when I was playing the beta for Exteel and had to download the North American NCsoft launcher I thought "I'm glad we don't have to use this piece of rubbish in the EU." Ah well...

its the same people going into every thread on this issue and saying 'update, its no problem' or 'why didn't you update, blah blah blah?'.

again, realize that not everyone can or wants to upgrade to SP3 and these type of high horse comments don't help. you're just alienating your fellow, subscription paying players.

I get completely the opposite. The NC Launcher can max out my 50mbit line, and patching is a hell of a lot faster. I20 was downloaded and patched in less than a minute.

Well then I'm done playing this game then.. Very damn moronic if you ask me, and I just came back to game recently.

Real bang up job. I just waited most of MY day for this crap? Oh I will be getting my money back for the month then.

Just stupid.
