Still Running Out of Memory

Posted

I was hoping the maintenance/hotfix today might fix the memory leak, but no... still crashed after 30-40 minutes of doing nothing more than flying around and zoning a few times. CoH using almost 1.5GB of RAM by then, even after /unloadgfx after each zone.

Is this ever going to change? Do I really have to install an entire new 64-bit OS just for the hope of maybe not crashing continually? I love the game, but I'm frustrated; before I20 this was the most stable MMO I ever played, now it is by a wide margin the most unreliable.

Pardon the venting; I was looking forward to the VIP headstart, and now I see that the only way I can continue to enjoy CoH is by shutting off Ultra mode to prolong the amount of time I can play until I crash. That's not how I want to play the game, but until this mystery problem is found and fixed, I guess it's the only option.

What I don't understand is how a 64-bit OS would matter as to how long CoX takes before crashing, given that it is a 32-bit application. (Yes, I'm aware support gives this suggestion, as a friend of mine has your same issue.)

Are you leaving the Launcher running in the background while you play? If so, shut it off after the game launches.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I am having the same issue, game crashes with message out of memory..really? and no I do not run the launcher in the background,it is on auto close.However.the memory leak has been around for many years, trying to edit your SG base is horrible and has been for a very long time.

I've got the launcher set to close, closed all other applications that might remotely be hogging memory, increased my virtual memory and paging files enormously, and followed every other tip I've been able to find... increasing the virtual memory/paging files seemed to help a little, in that now when I crash I don't get the 'run out of memory' popup.

I don't really know that a 64-bit OS would help, since I've heard people still have this issue with 64-bit; but it would allow the system to utilize more RAM (apparently), and possibly stave off a crash. I don't know that for sure though, and it would be a lot of work to completely rebuild my comp around a 64-bit OS without being certain it would fix the problem.

There's some comfort in not being alone in this, but not much; I'd be happier if we could ALL play without interruption or crashing!

While I'm not getting crashes (and never got them), I'm still winding up with lag spikes. Uh yeah, sure they were a little better for a while there but now they're just hammering me.

I should add though that my memory is fine.

I wonder if it has anything to do with having more then one video card. my laptop has a gtx460m, and i have no issues playing in ultra mode in a league. but when i go to my PC with 2 gtx460 in sli on ultra mode and by the time siege comes out of his hut, it is slide show time. both are on the newest drivers. i am going to try disableing SLI and see if it is any diffrent

I only have one video card, so no.

I was having the exact same problem -- I had a GTX 460 video card, 4 gigs of ram, and 32 bit Windows Vista. I ran in Ultra Mode and kept crashing...

I fixed it by upgrading to Windows 7 64 - Bit and stuck an extra 4 gig of ram in there. It cost me about 150 dollars but it solved the problem.

I have this same problem. I am running a desktop with 8 gigs of ram and I cant last 2 hours with out a crash. Sometimes only an hour if i'm doing a lot of stuff. Sometimes it says its a problem with sky mapping, some times wall mapping. I don't have my graphics set very high anymore but that does not seem to help much.

I've been getting this frequently since incarnate trials, and the league system were introduced.
Issue 20 & 20.5 were more noticeable with crashes from .pigg file errors every 3 or so trials, and every single hamidon, and mothership raid were a definate crash.

Since the I21 headstart crashes are every single trail, every one.
I've recorded instances with Coh using up to 2.4 gigs before crashing, but most times now its around 1.9. If i stay on a normal, non trial mission map i can run for serveral hours before a crash, but everytime i zone the useage spikes , and the loading screen jumps side to side.
No, i don't have the launcher running in the background, and i have graphics at bare minimum even after swapping between a nvidia , and ati card ,both 1 gig cards.

Just curious, but how many Trollers and/or MM's are on your teams? ;-)

If there is a controller its usualy just me, if i'm making the team , there are no MM's, i don't allow them.
If its a trail, thats not my decision as i can't form a trail without instant crash on queue, therefore i'm at the mercy of the star holder.

This is not City of Heroes specific, but applies to all 32-bit applications running on Windows:

* Running a 32-bit version of Windows will give 32-bit applications at most 2GB of RAM to use.

* If you boot a 32-bit version of Windows with the /3GB boot option enabled, 32-bit applications are given up to 3GB of RAM to use.

* If you run a 32-bit application under a 64-bit version of Windows, the application will be able to use up to 4GB of RAM.

Turning on the /3GB boot option can definitely help applications in out of memory situations, but you need to be careful changing your boot settings as you could render Windows un-bootable if you make a mistake.

Okay. Finally was able to see this behavior for myself today after a Fire/Rads ITF..

Woah...what's up with your SQL server thing? That's using atleast 3x what City's using.

Yeah. I have a lot of activity going on in SQL, pretty much 24x7. So it's buffering a lot into memory to keep the lag down. Even then, I've got it limited to 5GB. I've seen SQL eat 16GB servers for breakfast, belch, then scream for more...slowly...
