My tl;dr answer is: It's okay for a game to encourage you to step outside your comfort zone, but I don't think it should force you to.

This mainly applies to changes made to an already existing game. For a game that's brand new, as long as it delivers what it's advertising, then I'm fine with pretty much anything. If the game takes you outside your comfort zone, then just don't buy it. Not all games are designed for everyone.

The running mentality is (or at least was) that if you don't like the system and don't feel like going out of your comfort zone to engage in a system you don't like, you don't have to. The problem is that it has become impossible to ask for build advise without writing an essay about why you're not going to use Performance Shifter or Numia's Paizuri or whatever else may be expected of you, and why you don't have multiple hundreds of millions banked on your character. Because this has become expected of people.

As well, as new content is created and people clamour for it to be more difficult, the argument for that is that we're so much stronger now that we have inventions, neglecting the fact that "we" not always are. I'll grant you that to a large extent where the "pressure" to step out of my comfort zone on the subject comes from the players, themselves, rather than from the game's specific direct design, but it's there nonetheless.
You yourself gave the answer that I was going to give. When the developers gave us the invention system, they gave out lots of encouragement to use it, basically in the form of the ability to make our characters FAR more powerful than we could without them. They didn't try to force people to use it though. Nothing in the game was made more difficult to compensate for the fact that we could make more powerful characters. I'm okay with that.

However, this does beg the question - is it right for people to expect me to step out of my comfort zones and use schoolyard taunts to mock me for choosing not to? Because that's happened. Is it right from a game design standpoint? I don't know. I personally don't like it, but again - I'm biassed. That's why I'm posing this as a question, not giving an answer.
Well, no, I don't think it's right for people to make fun of you for not using the invention system. It's your $15 a month, you should play in whatever manner is fun for you.

On the other hand, you can't really blame that on the game design or the developers either. They have no control over what the players do, and that includes pressuring you to use a system that you don't like.

The Market and Inventions are City of Heroes' answer to loot, that much is beyond reasonable debate at this point, and both systems bring with them that same "phat lute" mentality that is prevalent in other games. Some people embraced the system and fell in love with it. I find it to be cumbersome, clunky, slow, unwieldy and very, very disorderly. To me, Inventions represent a system that, in order for me to engage in it, I have to go quite a ways out of my own comfort zone.

As it is with Inventions, so it is with quite a few other things (the Architect, Alignment Merits, Vanguard costumes, temporary powers, etc.), when I sit down and run a tally of what must happen to my playstyle in order for me to get into any of these, I realise that that would make the game not fun to play. Hence, I am facing the choice between going out of my comfort zone and playing in a way I don't enjoy so as to engage in some of the newer things, or not doing so and effectively missing out, as it were. This isn't restricted to teaming, as I feel the same way about quite a few soloable activities, while at the same time enjoying a few teaming activities, as well.

This is a broader question than just specific examples, however. The meat of it comes down to whether we should accept and indeed encourage games to nudge, coerce and eventually force us to do things we may not enjoy at the time, in the hopes that we will eventually change our minds after having experienced them, or whether games should be less demanding and more benevolent, allowing us to play as we choose, even if that means doing it "wrong." And it's not just an idle question, either, because it goes to a root decision in game design: How many "tough cookies" do you feel you should give your players?
I think you're oversimplifying the situation here. Games are not made for one person. They're made for thousands. And everyone has different comfort zones. So pretty much everything in a game is likely to go outside someone's comfort zone. You mentioned that the market goes outside your comfort zone, but for a lot of people, getting the market added to the game was the best thing that ever happened to it (myself included). It fits right in my comfort zone. And everything is like that.

I think the best a game can do is to be up front about what it includes. And if it's going to add things that change the existing paradigm, try not to force them on people.

Yes, however it'll be a long wait. I've had a bid sitting for 2 months and still haven't gotten one yet.
  4. I've wanted to try a toon like this for awhile (one that crams as many procs into his powers as possible). I've decided on a blaster, because I haven't played one in awhile. I'm going for something that fits the concept, but is also playable, which is why most of the attacks use 3 procs and 3 other IOs. I figured anything less than 3 IOs for enhancements might not give enough

Below is a rough outline of a build. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm also not entirely set on the powersets either, so if you have an idea of one that you think might work better, I'm all ears.

Has anyone else played a build like this before? And if so, how did it work out?

Well, that's disappointing. That pretty much kills any chance of this character ever getting made. At least until/unless they do give VEATs access to APPs.

    Extra 0 much?

I've never gotten lucky off of someone else's mistake, but someone got lucky off of mine a couple times. The worst was paying 300 million for a piece of rare salvage.
  9. I'm way too lazy to make that much money. I average about a billion a week. Considering that I don't get to play as much as I used to, that's more than enough to be able to afford the expensive builds that I want to make. It definitely doesn't make me want to stop playing the markets, because there's always something to spend it on. I don't play the markets for the sake of playing the markets. It's just a means to an end for me.

Depends on what toon I'm playing. My fire/SR scrapper is a machine. He's softcapped, perma-hasten, and solos AVs in his spare time. If he runs up against enemies with to-hit buffs, though, he dies like a blaster. Rularuu eyeballs, nemesis, and DE all chew him up and spit him out.
  11. My wife and I both have the power, and mostly just use it on each other. I will occasionally hit someone else with it if they use it on me, but for the most part, I don't play buffers because I don't like to. I don't want to become one, so I'm not real free with it.

The few times I've used it unasked, I've never had anyone complain, since if they don't want it, they can just click No in the box that asks you if you accept.
  12. Awesome announcement. This should be a very good thing.

Are you sure? That seems like a major oversight in mids then. I thought that VEATs that became heroes could access hero APPs.

Thanks for catching that. I'm not sure I want to change it though. I don't really need the recovery (my ST attack chain is sustainable with conserve power) and I'd like to keep the 9% accuracy bonuses from the LotG sets.
  15. The goal of the build is to be capable of soloing AVs/pylons/etc. and general all-around awesomeness.

Key features are: Softcapped to all positions, perma hasten, perma mind link.

The build can run an attack chain of Follow up/slash/strike/swipe/lunge, which , with double-stacked follow up and the musculature core paragon alpha slot, is capable of over 250 DPS.

So, thoughts? How would you change/improve the build?

Just so you have a point of comparison, I can pretty easily make a billion inf a week playing the markets for maybe a total of half an hour over the course of that week. I could make a lot more each week if I wanted to put in more time at the markets.

I know you said you're a pack rat, but look at it this way. Hoarding enhancements in your base is like hiding money under your mattress. It's safe, but it doesn't do anything for you. Playing the markets is like investing in the stock market. Risky, but your money is out there earning more money for you.

I'm not so sure that's universally true. For some TFs, I think the average completion times might actually go up.

Case in point, the ITF. That was one TF that had a lot of speed runs, since a good team can do it in well under an hour, and a great team can do it in like 20 minutes. Recently though, people have been doing shard runs where they kill nearly everything, so it's been taking a lot longer (most shard runs take an hour or more even with a good team)
  18. Personally, I don't farm to make inf any more. I play the markets for my inf needs. It's far, FAR more efficient than farming. If you really want to make a lot of inf, you need to learn to play the markets.

That being said, there's a couple of old standbys that still work well for farming.

Maria Jenkins gives the Battle maiden farm, that's always a good one. The TV farm is good if you're playing redside, but one thing to be aware of there, is that the map is long enough that you'll fill your recipes up before you get to the end of it if you're running solo. So you'll want to only run about half of it or be clearing crap recipes out as you get them.

As far as ATs go, fire/kins are a classic for a reason. They're excellent farmers, and they don't require a lot of skill to play, or a lot of expensive IOs to be capable of it. SS/FA brutes are another excellent choice, but they require more skill to play and/or a more expensive build generally to reach the same level of performance as a fire/kin. A well built and well-played SS/FA will probably out-farm a well-built and well-played fire/kin though.

There are lots of other combinations that will make good farmers, those are just two of the most popular. Basically anything that can dish out enough damage to kill things quickly and is tough enough not to die while doing so can farm. Some other successful farm builds are:

    Archery/MM blasters
    Spines/Fire, Spines/dark, Spines/electric scrappers
    Fire/SS tanks
    Fire/Shield or electric/shield scrappers
    Fire/Shield, SS/Shield, Mace/Shield or electric/shield brutes

And these are just some of the better builds. You can farm with anything, you just won't be as effective at it.

One note is that if you play redside and will be running the TV farm, don't play a tank/scrapper/brute/stalker with a defense-based secondary. The to-hit buffs from stacked vengeance will make your defenses pretty much completely useless.

Frequently, and I very rarely hear it used on TV.
  20. I'm strongly considering just skipping the WTF for this week. Both my 50s that wanted the incarnate stuff already have their level shift, so I don't desperately need it for them. I do have a SS/Shield brute at level 41 that I wanted to run it with for the big XP reward at the end, but it may just not be worth it. I figured this would be a mess, and it looks like I'm right.

The devs really should have disabled zone events (banners, rikti raids, zombie raids, etc.) for this week since so many people are running numina.
  21. Why go to the effort of recoding character size limits and then only give access to it to a very small fraction of players. Seems kind of dumb to me. Especially considering that this has been requested by a lot of people for a long time.

    City of Prudes

You answered your own question. The devs gave us those costume pieces, so obviously they're okay with us using them. The only thing you're not really allowed to do with costumes is rip off copyrighted material.
  23. People make Freedom out to be worse than it really is. I started out playing on Guardian, but realized pretty early on that I like playing on big teams, so I switched to Freedom where the population is much larger. I'd never switch back.

Yes, there are more rude idiots on Freedom than on any other server, but that's mostly because there are more people period on Freedom than on any other server. I play around 10 hours a week, and nearly all of it is on large PuG teams. I run into maybe 1-2 players a month that are really unpleasant.
  24. Doms can generally slot a ton of purple sets due to having all the kinds of powers that purple sets are made for (mezzes and damage). It would probably require slotting some powers oddly, but I know it can be done. I've done it before (in mids, not in the actual game).
  25. So it sounds like there's not really one major factor that's causing my DPS to drop, it's probably a combination of several small factors, most of which there's very little I can do to mitigate.

I appreciate all the help guys.
