My Kat/Regen toon has been built specifically to kill AVs for a few weeks now, and that's what I've been doing. I've messed around with some other toons, doing some teaming and soloing, leveling a few different scrapper set combinations up high enough to try them out. I figured out that my Kat/Regen is still my favorite toon by far. The problem is, though I don't feel completely useless in teams, I don't feel like I am contributing as much as I could. So I came up with this build after messing around with it off and on for a couple days.
A few things to keep in mind: NO EPICS. I don't have enough playtime to play the market for enough money for that stuff, plus I'd rather take the money that could be used to purchase one or two epics and instead use it to go a long ways IOing out other toons I'll be leveling/finishing in I16.
Next, this is a -team based build-. I built in assuming that the tank is going to have almost all of the aggro, hence almost no melee defense. If I do pull any, I can use DA and/or cooldowns to defend myself. My recharge isn't amazing, but it's good enough, especially when I might be teaming with toons that have things like Speed Boost and Accelerated Metabolism.
Finally, while I didn't slot things at all in level order (in fact, I kind of went backwards, so ignore that), I probably will be exemplaring in order to get merits for LOTGs and other expensive IOs. Any suggestions on power orders are welcome.
I think it ended up being pretty good. I'm posting to see if there are tweaks I need to make (AKA Dam/End instead of Dam/Acc kinds of things), or if I missed something stupid along the lines of not slotting a Steadfast anywhere.
...
That all ended up being a little long winded, sorry. Here is the build. Thanks for your time/help.

I'm on my phone right now, so I can't send my build right now, but I'll be able to in a few days.

Wow, that's a long phone call.

If you slot Boxing for set bonuses, use 6 Razzle Dazzle IOs so you get the extra defense. And it isn't worth putting the 3rd def into CJ.

Off topic, but...

I want to PvP someone on test who has a Fire/WP. I challenge you now with my Fire/Regen Super Scrapper!
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think superiority in PvP is at all an issue here. Most know that Regen outclasses most of the other scrapper secondaries, especially since WP suffers from toggle-drop issues with RttC.
But then again, many people are of the opinion that PvP in this game is borked anyway.
The issue here (or non-issue, as it were), is their comparative performance in PvE. -
[ QUOTE ]
Maintaining 6.5 targets is an astoundingly high figure. By your own assessment, Regen delivers superior regeneration.
[/ QUOTE ]
No, it's not. Not hard to do when solo, brainless to do when on teams, and with the changes coming in I16, you won't even need a team to fight large mobs.
I've seen quite a few new Spines/WP toons strolling around Atlas, and it's not hard to figure out why. -
It's ok. We still believe you. A lot of my first screenshots had no UI turned on, because until I checked my screenshot folder after killing 10 or 15 AVs, I didn't even know screenshots defaulted to having no UI. But after getting screenshots that count, I feel as though I don't really need to go back and get proper screenshots for those no-UI fights.
Anyway, don't shoot your foot over it. We'll take your word.
Good luck with the rest of them -
I can see a hero doing a lot of pistol melee. I can see them dodging attacks and whipping around and spinning to get in close range for some sweet moves. I can see them meleeing down one target and then turning to shoot another target at short range before flipping and spinning to another target.
I can see this being done in another game, with a different physics engine, game mechanics, and playstyle.
Not in CoH. -

Here is the underlineing problem with the WAY Regen works now. . . It doesn't. That's a period at the end of that statement. For you 4 AV's at one timers showing us it does, you are only showing that YOU are what works not the REGEN. You didn't do that by standing there and letting your body regen the damage you took. You double stacked +def (1st of all) and secondly YOU are really AWESOME with that set, you know it well, and probably use it better than any other person around right now. BUT, like I said YOU make that set good, Regen doesn't make it good. Also, it's a huge misnomor. It isn't REGEN it's Click to Heal/Self Empathy.

*wipes a tear away*
*ahem*
The concept issue is an interesting one, but I think I must unfortunately say that it is a separate issue from what the main argument in this thread is. And as for the various points you made about regen being inferior simply because it isn't what the set used to be, I must disagree. Sure, that is valid when you look at it from your concept perspective, but in terms of overall game balance, Regen is still obviously holding its own. It may take more mashed potatoes to play, but when you do have some of those mashed potatoes, it can push the envelope.
Certain situations will favor Willpower. Certain situations will favor Regen.
In the end, as has been stated many times before, one should simply play what they enjoy. The difference in overall performance is minimal enough that the end decision should come down to personal preference. -
The best PvP scrappers that I see on my server are BS/Regen.

i nevers invite regens to mah teams. they are teh gimp.

Indeed, I could never accomplish anything decent on my own regen scrapper, so I shelved him. -
Congrats!
Challenging myself against AVs is what ignited my interest in this game after being gone and playing other MMOs for a really long time.
Keep it up, push the envelope as far as you can go, and you won't get bored again for a good while. -
Well, I can't speak from experience here, but as far as I've heard, Regen is one of the top tier secondaries when balanced using SOs only.
When IOs are considered, and when facing multiple enemies, Willpower probably pulls ahead with its ability to reach softcaps, combined with some resistance and its high levels of regeneration from RttC. -
As far as I've heard/seen, the consensus would point to SD being overall the better choice.
-
Another thing to keep in mind is that DM helps fill in the gaps some secondaries have, so you picked a primary that is going to help your secondary feel a bit more solid.
-
I have a Claws/SR Scrapper at 42 and a DB/Inv Scrapper sitting at level 4...
... and I like the Dual Blades scrapper more already. Claws is pretty cool and whatnot, but (to me at least) Dual Blades has a much cooler feel to it.
I'd probably recommend making both characters and trying both to level 6 or 8, picking up a few of the earlier attacks. Get a feel of how both sets look, and decide for yourself from there. -
Yes. Even soft-capped, you're going to get hit eventually.
-
Another great way to check out IO sets is through Mids itself. You'll be a little less overwhelmed by all of the sets out there because Mids narrows it down to only the sets you can place into whatever powers you are looking at.
Play around with your build a little while, check out what sets can go into what types of powers, and you'll get a feel for it all pretty quickly. -
Because if anyone else other than the tank starts to help you, then they'll likely take aggro. Unless you have confront and have built your scrapper for some nice AOE aggro, it's very likely that a number of mobs will break off from you and start killing squishies.
If you're going to jump into group-sized spawns, you better make sure you're either far away from the rest of your team, or built like a scranker. -
Another thing to consider, in addition to all that has been said above, is that with Dark Armor toggles on, you won't be able to see your character. Specifically, the power "Cloak of Darkness", which is the only ability from */Dark Armor that gives +defense, turns your entire character model invisible and replaces it with a black shadowy blob.
If you're not bothered by that, then ignore me and take when has been said already into consideration. -

I'm posting at my lunchbreak right now, so I don't have access to my stuff, but when I get home I'll dig Actin's build and post some food for thought. Just off the top of my head:
- She doesn't use Touch of Fear. The debuff is awesome for regular play, and it's a decent place for placing sets, but for AV-killing it doesn't help that much, because:
- Her global recharge is low. I can't recall how much exactly, but it is. Consider that the regular Smite -> Siphon -> Smite -> MG has a (small) gap in MG even with Hasten up. Without Hasten it's even worse, I can add Boxing in there and STILL have a gap.
- Her DPS is comparatively low. On the Pylon test she clocked in at a bit over 147 DPS IIRC.
- She depends a lot on Dark Consumption for functioning. This can be read two ways: With all the toggles and a tough build you will use a lot of end; also, Dark Consumption is really very dependable for regular play, and that's a huge leverage you can use.
- Most defense comes from a combination of Reactive Armor, Aegis, Obliterations and Kinetic Combat. KC is awesome. Gaussian's set is pretty "meh" for Soul Drain, you need to six slot to get as much "net" defense as a single Kinetic Combat (7.5%), it has no accuracy, and the proc is wasted in a long recharge click like that (the last's obviously IMO).
- I know there's room for improvement. Once I post the build you'll likely see it. That'll be later.
[/ QUOTE ]
So you're saying you took out 7 AVs at once with a far-from-flawless build?... -
When I saw the video of Nihilii soloing 6 AVs at the same time with his DB/Inv, I asked myself a similar question: I wonder how far the envelope could be pushed with a DM/Inv, which has similar if not better DPS, and a nice self heal besides?
I considered rolling one, but I'm pretty focused on my main character right now. I'm pretty sure that someday we'll see some pretty awesome feats accomplished with that combo by someone. -
[ QUOTE ]
Get them all around you and spam Divine Avalanche?
[/ QUOTE ]
Not, um... quite that easy.
To Cybernaut: You need to make sure DA is stacked twice at all times, of course, but timing heals/cooldowns is the biggest factor in survival. With two at range, which I only have ~25% defense against, and two at melee, death can come at any time. It's all about watching the buff/debuff bar for incoming hits and, like I said before, timing MoG or heals.
It's also about knowing when -not- to heal, and what hits you can afford to gamble letting your regeneration rate take care of instead of using your heal cooldowns.

Indeed, when I tell the ladies about my scrapper interwebz accomplishments, they pour in from all directions. -
Ok, I swear this is the last time I will post a new topic about my accomplishments for a long while
(You can let my other thread die as well.)
Anyway... As far as I know or have been told, 3 AVs at once was the best accomplishment so far for */regen. So... I had to know if I could do 4. Without temporary powers, and without inspirations. Turns out, I can. And I think I might be able to do 5, but I'm probably not going to try that for a while.
Convergence.
A cat falls, a narrow miss.
There's a snake in his boot.
ET goes home.
Must... stay away... from fellow Katana user...
... but he came after me anyway.
Why do they call it "Golden Dragonfly" anyway?
Looks more red to me.
Four AVs, one chat window.
So, that's that. I don't need more congrats or anything, since I got enough of that in the last thread. Just wanted to share. Thanks all. -
