Poll: Claws vs BD
I'm a big fan of the blades

I like the Dual Blades...
But just because they look cooler =]
I have a Claws/SR Scrapper at 42 and a DB/Inv Scrapper sitting at level 4...
... and I like the Dual Blades scrapper more already. Claws is pretty cool and whatnot, but (to me at least) Dual Blades has a much cooler feel to it.
I'd probably recommend making both characters and trying both to level 6 or 8, picking up a few of the earlier attacks. Get a feel of how both sets look, and decide for yourself from there.
Claws wins for one simple reason.
Focus.
Virtue:
Miserya - 50 EM/ELA Brute (Perma-shelved)
Adriana Rayne - 42 Katana/Dark Scrapper
Cyberpulse - 26 Super Strength/Willpower Brute
Steel Heart - 24 Invuln/Super Strength Tanker
Focus is the reason I rerolled from Claws to DB.
Claws(surprise), but that's like saying Claws is a 9.8 and DB is something like 9.7.
How can you not like Focus?

The animation feels sluggish to me. It fires right away, then there's that ackward pause before I can fire off another attack. Despite being only 1.32s, it always felt like a slow animation to me.
For my Claws needs I play a widow and am very happy with it.
I may be wrong, but the claws animations were made before BABs got hired on... correct?
Either that or he just got better at his craft, because DB just looks so... amazing!
But DB!
50's: Heroes: Ozmeth DB/WP; Black Decker DM/Regen; Shado-Strike DM/SR Scrapper (13 AV soloed); Desert-Shock Claws/Elec Scrapper; Shado-Shriek Dark/Son Def
Villains: Bokken Nin/Nin
Current project(s):
I hugely prefer claws. Im gritting my teeth on my latest DB scrapper trying to get them to SOs (3 previous attempts have been deleted), so I can give the combos a fair go.
It just hasn't done it for me in the past.

Correct. BABs wasn't there for the creation of Claws. It's been reworked enough to where it's superior to what the original version was and I cringe at the thought of going back to Claws 1.0.

Part of me getting into DB was skipping on any combo until I hit 26. Once I grabbed Sweeping Strike, then it got instantly fun for me. My lack of playing the build has more to do with my general lacking of playing, but I need to switch over to level 30 SOs and then get into the 30s because my slots are still on the light side for attacks. By the time I get level 35 IOs in there, it should further solidify it's status.

I know exactly what you mean. When you see it played, it looks like non stop swipe and slash. When you play it yourself, it feels like something is missing. I really can't put my finger on it. And yeah, my widow "is" my claw/sr scrapper. (*Waits for GR*)

Claws doesn't bore me like DB does. There's something about being "pushed" into combo use that annoys me. And by pushed, I mean, "why not get the extra effects? You fool! You missed that attack and broke your combo!"
Be well, people of CoH.
I have both a Claws and a DB.
My Claws scrapper and namesake has been 50 for almost 3 years now.
My DB scrapper is stalled at level 40.
That should answer the question.

Both perform very similarly. As many of the posts above imply, choose the one who's animations you like the best.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
Initially I thought DB would feel a lot like Claws to me with the Follow Up clone and two handed weapons. I tried it out on a Brute and couldn't get hooked, now I might actually get a brute to 50 with i16. The animations are "prettier" with DB but pretty isn't what I'm looking for in a scrapper.
On the plus side for Claws, you can have a very good feel for the set by level 18~20. Where DB probably takes a while longer to mature. My DM/SD is/was the same. I was mostly "enduring" having to play the alt, until the mid 30s and things took off.

I used to have a Claws/Regen right after ED, first Scrapper IIRC. Loved him to death, made it to L40 before I got distracted.
Now I have a DB/WP sitting at L37... I stopped playing for a couple months (Just started back up...last Friday evening). I cant get back into him. I dont know why because he's nearly invincible but it might be the "Dont like combos? Tough!" mindset of DB.
If my old Claws still existed I'd be playing him like crazy.

I never got into the combo trap with my DB/invis scrapper. (I did with my BD/WP brute when i11 went live) I use sweep and AV for aoe crowd control. That and that many orange numbers floating because of a non spine scrapper is cool to me. I can just as easily use BF, SS, 1KC, and TE. That's not a combo but it makes for some nice aoe dmg.
Non combo ST dmg isn't that bad neither. The downside is that the long animations are a pain vs targets that are trying to escape. I found that out the hard way.
And let's not forget about those lovely red cap daggers and rualuu fangs. (The rualuu claws are nice too)

I have both a Claws Scrapper and DB Brute at 50, the Claws being more recent. I like the animations of DB better, but I agree with a poster above who said its like a 9.8 vs a 9.7. I think they probably perform similarly in terms of numbers, so try em both and see which animations you like better.
I do think DB's customizable options are a little better than Claws, if that makes any difference for you. Here is the Wiki page so you can see what the different options are.

Well looking at the numbers in Mids and Redtomax it appears that Claws has higher base damage per attack and/or faster recharge/activation on some powers.
For Example: Spin vs Typhoon's Edge
Spin has higher base damage, faster recharge time and a lower End cost per activation. (However spin's animation is roughly 0.23 seconds longer than TE.)
and Slash vs. Alblating Strike
While they have the same base damage, Slash has faster recharge time and a lower End cost per activation. (while the Slash animation takes 0.2 seconds longer)
Clash also has the ability to attack enemies that are further away using Focus and Shockwave. Shockwave is also a 30' long cone that can hit up to 10 targets as opposed to the melee ranged cones in DB.
I assume that at least some of these disparities are made up for in the combos in DB?
Also, is it possible to stack the effect from the Weaken combo? If so, the 15% -toHit that would place on up to 10 enemies in melee range would be huge for a WP build below the softcap.
I have both DB/SR and claws/SR, and I prefer DB in general. Claws does have good mitigation tools and damage, but the thing that I dont care much for is the longer animation time of swipe coupled usually with the animation time of focus. I'm spoiled by faster animating fighting games (Street Fighter to Tekken, KI, MK etc) and anything in a combo/attack chain (save a finishing move) that animates in greater than a second or so is austintatious. In some cases I'd even trade some overall damage just to have a smooth consistant flow of sharp attacks. The trio of FU, focus, and swipe (in whatever combination) usually felt clumsy and left me putting in the tier 9 claws attack as a quick animating change of pace. *I dont feel that Im ripping things apart with my claws.* For some reason, likely timing, I never felt the need to substitute any move on my db with BF, sweeping, and AB. Those attacks flow well enough for me and the experience is much more ripping.

Claws/
Shockwave...
Mmmm. Shockwave.
Claws/ has a ranged component with Focus and Shockwave that really adds flexibility to the build for "generalist" play.
And I agree with others here, as the whole "combo" thing feels like someone is trying to force me into an attack chain. With Claws/, it's all about spamming the right attack at the right time... and that's it.
YMMV I guess.
Well I decided to follow the advice here and try them both and see the attacks and animations before making up my mind.
So I created Bronze-Tiger(Cl/WP) and Steel-Dragon (DB/WP) and will see which one impresses me more over the next few days.
And THAT was the best decision you could have made.
Be well, people of CoH.
I've been considering building a "generalist" scrapper and am looking at both Claws and Dual Blades.
Probably to pair up with either WP or SR.
Any opinions?
