Somewhere far back in this thread, I believe I complained that the late delivery of points would result in missing out on special sales. That's turned out to be the case with the extended Black Friday sale:
Quote:My billing date is the 1st, so this would be perfect timing - if the billing department had their database working correctly. Since it's evidently still not, there's little expectation that those affected will get their paid-for-in-advance VIP points in time.Actually, it was extended because we recognized that there were many players who wouldn't get their stipend points until the 28th, 29th or 30th, so we decided to extend the sale until 11:59:59 PM Pacific on 12/1 to benefit those customers.
If we could get receive regular official updates, say, semi-monthly, about how fixing the billing cycle-points desynchronization is progressing, that would go a long to reassuring affected players. -
Quote:And if this could be done in time for those of us whose billing date is the 1st of the month so we don't miss out on the extended Black Friday sale, that would be swell.I don't remember nominating you to represent all VIPs, but since you seem to have appointed yourself--see if you can get Customer Service to straighten out billing dates, renewal dates, point dates, transfer dates, and token dates. That would be awesome, thanks!

PC Gamer has a short but highly enthusiastic review of City of Heroes Freedom in their latest reviews:
Quote:All in all, something nice for Paragon Studios going into the holiday season.City of Heroes: Freedom is one of the most generous free-to-play games ever. Bad news for crime. Great news for us. {...}
Paying or not, this is all very impressive, making CoH well worth trying, or better yet, firing up an old account for a return visit. {...} City of Heroes remains by far the best superhero MMO in terms of content, systems and community and going free-to-play gives Paragon Studios a damn good reason to keep the new stuff coming. Even if what you got from a free account was all youd ever get, and there were no more updates, thered be more than enough BIFF! and POW! for one hell of a heroic or villainous career.{...}
Verdict How free-to-play gaming should be done, in a superhero MMO thats yet to be beaten for fun. More like this please!
Score 86/100 -
Quote:It's generous of Paragon Studios to consider player stipend cycles when picking start and end dates for sales. That goes some distance to reassure VIPers that they are, well, VIPs.Actually, it was extended because we recognized that there were many players who wouldn't get their stipend points until the 28th, 29th or 30th, so we decided to extend the sale until 11:59:59 PM Pacific on 12/1 to benefit those customers.
May we ask how the billing department is progressing with fixing stipend distribution for players whose billing cycle begins in the first third of the month? Unfortunately, all players with the 1st for their billing date are in an uncertain position about receiving their paid-for-in-advance VIP points.
Thank you for your attention. -

Did females get the Baron Jacket?
It's not a problem if certain costume pieces don't have an equivalent for the opposite sex because they'd look ridiculous, but there's no reason why perfectly serviceable items are restricted.
Also, the trend in female CoH costumes seems to be mirroring the "sexy" one in real-world Halloween costumes. Please, art department, stop going for the LCD gaming demographic. We know you are capable of far better. -

Read H. G. Wells's short story "The Sea Raiders" if you want to get an idea of how it will go down.

Hmn. The cache still works for my browser, but here's the article I was hot-linking to.
(It's not like Marvel isn't making a full-court press release out of this.) -

We were somewhere around Toshi Station on the edge of the desert when the midi-chlorians began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit of a disturbance in the Force; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge mynocks, all swooping and screeching and diving around the landspeeder, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Mos Eisley. And a voice was screaming "By the Holy Stars! What are these g*dd*mn animals?"
Then it was quiet again. My Jedi Master had taken his shirt off and was pouring spicebrew on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. "What the hell are you yelling about?" he muttered, staring up at the twin suns with his eyes closed and covered with a wraparound Bespin blast shield. "Never mind," I said. "It's your turn to pilot." I hit the brake jets and aimed the Great Brown Sando toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those mynocks, I thought. The poor nerfherder will see them soon enough.
EDIT: In the meantime, I've learned of an enormous upcoming gallery showing of impressive Star Wars art in Seattle...

One could perhaps forgive the mediocre UI on AE, but the equally poor one for the Paragon Market is just CoH power-blasting itself in the foot.

At the very least, just throw together some multiple choice questions on a web page, and we'll happily tick off the boxes.
One great advantage that the Internet affords is the facility with which data can be gathered. (Extrapolating from the aggregate isn't any easier, though.) -
That's a nice set of extras for something many people would be planning to do in the first place and should tempt anyone on the fence about maintaining theirs subscriptions. Looking forward to seeing in-game images and more concept art.

The several sketches that were done on the overhead only whetted my appetite. They should be at the top of the list for X-mastime store sales.

The more effort gone into dressing up this lottery-style feature, the more dispiriting it is in its implications for how Paragon Studios views its playerbase.
The repeated comparisons to Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon should be a warning sign. -
Please - and let's not wait until the Moonbase for retro sci-fi. (I may be alone in wanting the "fat suit" blazer that the NPCs wear to expand their girth.)
Quote:Texas Justice suggests the bubble helmet going with it by itself, having it headless, kind of like Mysterio from Spiderman. -
It's as though when NBC heard that they had the third most popular show with third greatest concentration of adults 18-49 with four or more years of college*, they figured the best thing for them to do would be to put it on the bench and try to come up with some old-style dumb TV.
* Parks and Rec and The Office are ahead of it. -
Also, many thanks to Von Krieger for providing this great recap. There's a lot of good news and things to look forward to. It's just a shame there's a metaphorical turd in the punchbowl.

Exclusivity combined with randomization basically transforms the Paragon Market into a lottery - with all that implies about taking advantage of psychology of gambling.
In short, no no no no no no!

Quote:The devs should be thankful the audience didn't start throwing rotten fruit after this announcement.Random CCG-style packs of stuff in the store! Prizes include AT IOs and items exclusive to this offer!
Audience: *uncomfortable silence*
It truly is the worst idea we've seen in the history of CoH. Should it go live, it will mark a more significant change in Paragon Studios' attitude towards its playerbase than CoH Freedom's launch of a F2P-MTX business model. -
Randomization of available items on the Paragon Market is such a jaw-droppingly bad idea I'm still trying to comprehend how the devs thought it would be acceptable to the playerbase. I'll post later about the psychology behind the lottery syndrome and the problems it presents in gaming.
