Quote:Welcome to the City.Second of all, how do you fly? I want to make a flying character. I'm going to delete the one I already have in lieu for a better prepared, better looking one.
Third of all, what's a good noobish starting class?
Fourth of all, what's the best server?
Any character can fly though WarShades need some kind of Temp power in order to do it. You can get Hover at level 6 and Fly at level 14 (if you picked either Hover or Air Superiority by level 12).
If you can talk someone into it, you can get a Raptor Pack in the Shadow Shard for 10k as soon as you zone into the game. You just have to get to the vendor and pay the 10k and you can fly - the pack has 2 hours of use time.
Noob isn't cool. You are a new player. Noob is an insult term used by jerks. I dread hearing anyone call someone this - especially themselves. It is always used as a negative and degrading term. I really see no reason for it's use in the City at all. The Superhero genre, it would be much more in character for someone to call someone a Rookie. Needless to say, many players spend plenty of time as a side-kick to a team leader.
Scrappers, Tanks, and Brutes with Willpower or Regen are probably the easiest to play and most survivable. Don't pick Dual Blades to start with as they have a combo system - the other sets don't.
The best server is the one that you like playing on the most and that is completely debatable and often related to the friends that you find to game with.
Each server has it's own flavor.
The top sever is always the one that you logged into last.
Then the servers list in load order. 2nd to top - lowest load. Bottom one highest load. So if you have lag issues, you might want to try a server with a lower load - this may or may not affect the amount of lag you experience.
Virtue is the unofficial RPG server.
Champions was/is where Champions the RPG players used to/do hang out.
Justice is the unofficial Oceanic Time-zone server, but there are plenty of US players on it.
Infinity was at one point the (if not one of the) unofficial PvP servers.
Each of the servers basically has it's own feel. I'd suggest making a character on each and seeing which you feel at home on..it might end up being a matter of which one you find has the coolest supergroup to join - which is also a matter of personal taste. -

Quote:Like the others have said No. They definitely shouldn't be gone.whenever I create a character, save the character, play the character and spend hours trying to train up and level up. When I close the game and restart it, the character is gone.
Are these gone forever?
Thanks.
The top server on the server list is always the one that you logged into last. You should be able to click on that server and see the last charater you played on the first page of characters (far left page of the 3 pages of characters).
This is all assuming that you have an actual game account and are not logging in on different trail accounts each time you play. Trail accounts only last 14-days and you will lose your characters on trail accounts unless you buy a normal game account related to that trail account. -
If you have CoolCharacter on one server and someone else has CoolCharacter on a different server, which CoolCharacter would the game try to send it to?

Quote:Translation :: Hello all. I just ran around in the City/Isles for the first time last night! So far it's lots of fun. I'm not sure what archetype is good for starting players, so I'm looking for suggestions. I'm looking forward to meeting people in the game and joining a supergroup (or villain group). I'm looking to PL to 50 to see what this game is about.Hello all. I just started playing last night. So far I am enjoying the game. not sure what class is good for noobs but if you got any tips id appreicate it. Hope to meet people in game and maybe join a guild. I lookforward to geting to 50 and seeing that this game has to offer.
Thanks folks have a good great one.
Hmm. At least that's the way I read it.
Okay, so the terminology is different here. Noob is an insult. I only see it thrown around in CoH by jerks - yeah, I'm serious.
This is - at the core - a friendly and helpful community of players.
To get help while you are running around in the City or Isles, you can use the [Help] channel by typing /hc [message]. That is what the [Help] channel is there for.
Since you are new, I would suggest making one of every archetype and seeing which you like best.
If you are looking for easiest to play and most survivable, I would suggest
- scrappers or tanks on the Hero-side or brutes on the villain side.
- Willpower or Regen for a Defense set
- I would avoid Dual Blades to start with as they are the only melee set with combos
Getting in a Super group or Villain group is easy as looking in the SG/VG Recruiting Threads here in the forums ( http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=566 ) or simply yelling out in Atlas or Mercy
-
/b I'm looking for a Supergroup.
-
There are probably there is already someone out there yelling
-
/b I'm from Supergroup X. We have all the gear and tp'rs to everywhere. We are cool because of this and this. Looking for active players.
-
That might work for you. I think it is better to PuG (pick up group) for a while. You will probably get people offering you a spot in their SG and you can see how they play and make a call if that is what you are looking for.
Joining a SG doesn't always mean that you will have people to team with, some SG's are just about inviting new players for the prestige that they generate for the SG, so if you are not pleased with the first SG you join - don't feel stuck, there are plenty more of them out there.
Okay. Don't rush to get a 50. Seriously. This is not a game where level 50 is the end-all-be-all. There, fortunately, still is no End-Game in CoH. The fun of CoH is the journey, the cool battles, and the combos of powers that you use and others use around you.
If you are here to grind and "win" the game, then I think you have already lost.
The City is about the Flavor. Enjoy it and it will reward you. There is a lot to experience, and you will miss out on a bunch of it if you try to just rush through the game.
In fact, one of the things you can do when you hit even as low as level 25 is to go back in time and run the earlier missions!
So I suggest running around and enjoying the City.
Don't let yourself be dragged down into the Sewers right off the bat. (Don't tell me the first thing you want to do when you start playing a Superhero game is to act like it is a Fantasy game and run around in the Dungeons). Avoid the AE. (The AE can be cool, but new players are often sucked into something that doesn't resemble normal game play at all because of the kinds of players that want to lure low level characters into AE missions.)
Get some starter missions and explore the City. They will teach you things that many people miss out on - a feeling for the City. The starter missions will run you around a bit, but there is nothing to stop you from stopping some purse-snatching, etc along the way.
So good luck and have fun in the City.
I know I always do. -
Quote:On the other hand, some are just going to think you are the jerk with money.....
Those of us with a leg up on the new powers already have a privilege of playing with the new powers in advance, why the heck should we get a free month as well? Thats like asking for a second $300-$400 video card for SLI or Crossfire for FREE. The company would soon lose money if they granted that. We should count ourselves lucky that the Devs pay attention to us and try to make us happy rather than complain about Im not getting a free month, waaaaaa!
....
I don't see you saying anything about the bad economy or how some of us are suffering because of it.
I see you comparing giving away $300-400 to one month of free play time.
That's garbage and you know it. The two do not equate.
I'd tell you where you can take your "I have money so if you don't you're just a crybaby" attitude if the forum rules didn't say I couldn't. Believe me I would Mr Arrogant.
I have it rough right now but I have always been good with my money. I don't have any credit cards. I am in debt to no one. The only thing I ever bought with a loan was a computer that I already had money set aside for so that I could get credit to buy a house. I had a mortgage. I don't have one any more. I live within my means. I do what I have to do to get by.
I can see how $15 makes a big difference to some people in these hard economic times.
If you can't have compassion for those that aren't as luck as you, I really wish the table turn and show you what it is like on the other end of the stick and then you might have a different perspective, but I'm sensing it would just probably make you more of a jerk.
I paid $50 for City of Heroes. I paid for a pre-release version of City of Villains. I don't know when I'm going to have the money to get GR. And you're tossing around $'s like the mean nothing.
Those $15 might mean nothing to you. (And I throw some money at the DEVs for booster packs when I can). But that $15 could very well the equivalent of $15,000-30,000 to you - aka so much money that it's a difference between paying rent, eating, putting gas in a car, or paying for utility bills.
But like I said in MY EARLIER POST in regards to this, if they want the free month, they can wait to buy it and train up in some patience along the way.
Those that have the loot to show-boat and act L337 because they have the extra buck can feel free.
You've made my decision for me. Regardless if I save up the money early to get the pre-release version of the game..I'll wait for the version with game time. I'm tight on cash and I don't have money to throw around. That $15 would really help me out. The DEVs can thank you for not getting that extra $15, oh arrogant one with $ and attitude to throw around at the less fortunate.
I don't have much patience from arrogant people with money, they are the ones that ruined the world economy for those of us that are suffering because of it ...and some of them...could care less about the economic state that some of us are in.
You must play villains primarily, because you certainly are no hero with the kind of attitude you are expressing.
I'm seriously tempted to double the freaking stakes and say that I'm not going to play with any teams on the live servers with anyone that has DP or Demon Summoning before GR is released. I may very well refrain from doing so just because of this jerks post.
Some of us are really suffering out here. It isn't a joke! -
Okay, it was brought up in the announcement thread,
here :: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=207573
It's always worth a shot.
If you'd like to keep
Free Server Transfers - FOREVER
Stand up and be heard.
- Would you like to keep free server transfers?
- Are they good for the longevity of the community?
- Does it make PvP events easier to set-up? (like when the Test Server is down)
- Do you like the ability to move character around to other servers!?
Post here and/or over at the thread above.
I personally only used the free transfers to help out someone (no details will be given). I don't have many free slots at this point (got some at Christmas), and I'll be using them for certain new power sets to be released soon.
I really don't need to move characters around, but I have the feeling that some people are really liking the ability to be able to move characters for free, so let's hear what you have to say!

Exit Mission on Complete: You can now specify that players have to leave the mission manually on completion.
Escort Missions: "Lead to place" technology allows you more control over escort objectives.
I can't say that "Exit Mission on Complete" is going to be a favorite though.
Having the Escort lead you to an another mission Event will be pretty cool though.
What's not to love about new maps!? -
Quote:Not true.Yes, you're free to grumble, gripe, moan, and generally b**ch. But you're not going to get a lot of sympathy from us folks who have been around since the game started.
I can sympathize with them.
I bought into the year +2 free months in Nov and, if I buy the Pre-order GR, then it is like I loose one of those two free months I was baited with in order to get me to buy in to the full year purchase price which put money into the companies hands during development of this project.
As far as gaming companies go, this is minor if at all an insult towards players intelligence. If you are in a monetary dilemma like many of us and don't feel like donating a months worth of play time to the cause, then just wait for the full release.
The pistols will still be there. You don't have to have the pistols now - they are not Pokemon cards. Release of GR is only a couple of months away. Sharpen your skills; patience is a skill that will take you a long way through hard and grueling times. I'm completely serious about that. If more people learned that lesson, the credit card companies profits would fall and consumers would have more money to spend - it might take a second to sink in, think about it.
I'm not complaining. I am sympathizing with those that can't shell out a little extra to suppport the game that they love. Times are tight right now. Some of you might not have been out of work or may have managed to even run into anyone that was hurt by the economic down turn, but millions of people were. This is a two-pronged whammy for them. Loose a month for pre-order (or wait for general release) and get to hear monetarily-endowed people giggle over how much better their graphics are. Heck, there are some of us that might not even have the bucks for GR. It might turn out that I'm one of them.
Maybe they are pushing for us to wait and get the full version when it comes out?
I don't know.
If it is worth the extra money to be "the cool kid on the block" or "L337 k1d 1n 7h3 Z0n3", then buy the pre-order and shoot your pistols off early and sport them in Ultra-Mode (that most of us won't see).
I want to see the game in the stores and on-the-shelves luring new players to play this great game. Then I suggest buying it in stores either way.
If you want to feed more money directly to Paragon Studios, I don't know if on-line purchase will funnel any more money to them or if NCSoft will skim just as much off the top as a retailer.
Myself, I'll be checking in at the local stores to see what they have on the shelves. I think it is for the good of the game that it gets store-front exposure - I don't see it getting much exposure any place else.
Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll have enough cash to buy it.
I doubt I'll be seeing Ultra-mode anytime in the foreseeable future. You see if I need to get a new graphics card, I probably need to get whole new computer and that's a lot more than the "low end" $100 that graphics-card that "might run" Ultra-mode - and far more than the copy of GR will cost either way - and like I said, I'll be lucky to have enough to buy that.
So yeah, I might not have been in the original Beta or bought a pre-order copy of CoH, but I bought a copy almost as soon as it came out and started playing as soon as I could save up to buy the parts to build a computer to run it. I'm a 66 month vet, and I can sympathize with someone that is already owns a copy of the game that won't get a free-month unless they wait to buy the full version when it is released. I'm pretty sure I received a free month when I bought the Pre-order of CoV.
All that being said, ranted, or whatever, my suggestion is get some training time in on patience while waiting for the full version to be release if you want to get the free month.
I'll be doing my patience-training saving up money to get a copy when I can save up enough to get it.
Either way, I'm sure some aspect of it will be worth the wait. -
Quote:I was just going to post a link to my reply on the New Discussions forum, but it looks like that thread was deleted and/or I'm too tired to find it.Hey, we just had announced in Issue 17 that one of the "features" is that Epic ATs can now be unlocked after level 20...
Well, Epic has just become less "epic".
The only sense I can make of this is that it is being implemented to give players on less reason/excuse to feel that they "need" to PL characters.
I'm not even sure why level 20 was picked. You already get capes and a new costume slot at 20.
Honestly, if I was going to lower the unlocking bar I would have made it level 25. That puts you square between the level 20 and level 30 costume unlocks. Also, it is so easy to get to level 20 at this point, you may very well shoot by it before you even realize you've hit 20.
I remember when making it from level 10 to level 15 filtered out the heroes from the punks. Now there are going to be freaking aliens everywhere. (...but didn't people say the same thing about Wings?) -

I agree that the Shadow Shard should be a co-op zone.
It gets very little traffic and making it a co-op zone would increase it's use.
I either suggested or supported this idea when it was suggest before. Honestly, it was so long ago, I can't remember which but I think it came up in a QOL (Quality of Life) Zone discussion.
It's kind of sad that the base Mission Computers can't even give you the broken Cathedral of Pain mission. From my view point, it would be good to be able to run the Cathedral of Pain mission even if it didn't allow your SG to have a IOP (Item of Power). I really think that the Mission Computers should give you other missions that are specially related to SG teaming.
I can understand why the DEVs might not want to do this, but there are so many SG's that won't play with non-sg members that they might as well set-up some missions for the Mission Computer. -
I ran this TF about a month or so ago. I didn't experience all this lag, but I was probably too busy trying to keep Daedalus alive while the rest of the team was running off doing whatever it was doing.
To be honest, I don't remember what server I was on, but I know it wasn't on Freedom or Virtue, so perhaps which server you are on may have something to do with the amount of lag you are experiencing during that tf.
Which server was it btw?
I wonder how many teams may have been running the TF at the same time (I'm assuming that could possibly increase the lag).
I'm not going to say I never lag; I've been to a Rikti Raid or two. I can say that recently I have had, have seen characters, and have heard of characters experience bad rubber-banding to a set lock-point that is similar to the old OOS bug. (I haven't experienced it recently.) However, this does not seem to be what the OP is talking about and I seriously didn't notice any excessive lag when I ran the TF in question. -
I would think that it is fairly obvious that Cimerora is just east of Hyberborea, north of Aquilonia, and in the Age of Conan (aka the Hyborian Age).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Maphyboria.jpg
For those of you that are unfamiliar with Conan the Barbarian, he is also known as "Conan the Cimmerian, from the name of his homeland, Cimmeria".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_the_Barbarian
It might be just me, but Cimmeria and Cimerora are pretty close and the Cimerora zone was released around the same time as Age of Conan.
Mere coincidence?
Only you can decide!
Knowledge is half the battle! -
I think we are more likely to see my semi-mocking/semi-serious Dual Pistol Scrapper Primary than a Dominator whip set (besides if the Doms get it, the Controllers will get it! - later if not sooner...)
It remains to be seen what will go on with this Demon Summoning set. I would assume (even based on the OPs suggestions) that the Whip would have a Fear effect. -
I'm going to go at this from a different angle than the others.
I play character conception characters. I might pick sets, but I pick powers and theme them to the character.
When the new Earth Domination set became available for controllers. I tested out an Earth/Earth controller.
My concept?
Cheeseman - a creature made of living cheese. This character was originally a Champions the RPG character that I had created as a joke, but, with the new Power Customization options, I figured I could pull him off. Earth/Earth seemed to fit. Cheeseman originally was to have powers to Entangle people with an attack that started off gooey and then hardened as it "cooled" or set-up.
I started making the powers look like cheese and figured out what to call Cheeseman's various attacks. Quicksand would be his Nacho Dip attack - layering the ground with cheesy goodness that would slow down any foes that tried to run through it.
It is in my experience that any group of players with any power sets that work together can be effective in the game.
I understand that some people want to mini-max and feel that they must do certain things in order to be "the best they can be".
This is a game about superheroes. I like to have fun when I'm playing. To me it isn't all about who's better at what or mini-maxed the best, but what's fun for me to play.
I didn't make Cheeseman (Earth/Earth Controller) on the live servers (nor did I make Cheesewoman (Earth/Earth Dominator) on the live servers). I have a lot of characters and, at the time, all of my slots were filled.
As you are thinking of making a Earth Controller, I would start of by thinking of a cool character conception and then figuring out what secondary fits best - or, conversely, pick a secondary that you have not tried before and then work up a character conception to fit the power sets.
Remember that just because the set is called Earth, that doesn't have to be what it is in the end. It will have those same powers, but you can customize how they look and explain why you are doing what you are doing that could very well have nothing to do with the original sets aspects. Check out the options you have for customizations. There are some cool picks for customization for Earth that might give you character conception ideas. -

If you didn't see the Architect and Power Customization as strives forward over the last year then I have to ask how nerfing powers at release was noticeable progress for Champions Online.
You must be referring to Champions Online requiring their life-time subscribers to pay for the new content - but that would be for 2010 and not 2009.
I think Champions Online is going to win the "bait-and-switch" award hands down. -

So this may have been asked before but....
Was there a significant loss of revenue from people that were purchasing transfers previously?
(I'm not asking about the revenue that would have been generated if everyone had to pay for all there server transfers that they have used because obviously many wouldn't have been made if people had to pay for them)
Is there a significant strain on the servers due to people using free server changes?
As I usually have all my slots full, generally this is a feature that I would not use. However, I can see how this would be beneficial to PvP (espeically when the Test Server is down or running Betas) or special server-based events.
If it does not cause a significant loss in revenue and/or drag down the servers, I would think that keeping servers transfers free would be of great benefit to the community. -
I applaud your thought into your post, but leveling has to stop somewhere.
If you move the cap to 60, then someone will want to move it to 75, then someone else will want to move it to 100, etc.
I'm against any level cap increase.
There are plenty of things to do at level 50 in CoH. If you run out of "normal" content, there is always the AE.
The AE isn't all farms. It was never supposed to have ANY farms. There are good missions in there for all levels. If you can't find a good one, then take time making one that all of us will enjoy playing.
Seriously, if you can get by with the PD VIP TP, Ouroboros TP, Recall Friend, Assemble Team, SG TP (to base and from base), and Mission Teleporter then you are getting a bit spoiled. In fact, I think it's a bit boring to use that stuff all the time as I personally enjoy traveling through the city via which ever travel power (though I do find TP Self still a bit annoying to use).
With Super Jump as my favorite power, I kind of get a kick out of jumping from roof top to roof top or bounding off window ledges on tall buildings.
Sometimes the quickest or shortest path to get some where isn't the best way to go, sometimes enjoying the journey makes fun the best best part of traveling through the City.
I have my Vet Pets. People that really want combat pets can pick Archetypes and power sets which give them pets. There are plenty of them.
If you really want all these pet powers, it is easy enough to make a Master Mind.
I understand that some players just play one character.
I get bored if I just play one character, so I can understand why someone else would (unlike someone that just plays one character, I just switch to another character/side/server). That is one of the major reasons that I'm against PL'ing and farming - both quickly lead a "one character player" into situations where they may feel that they have limited or repetitive game experiences.
I would wager that any player that left because they hit 50 are just going to leave again when they hit 60, so why put in all that work for someone that is probably going to try to burn through those levels in order to "win" and leave the game again (or complain because there is no more content because they hit the level cap again)?
Of course, some "one character players" are simply just trying to reach the level cap, "ding", say "I win", they are done with the game, and can brag to their friends about "how they beat" another MMORPG or how easy and boring CoH is.
I don't understand why players that just play one character think that they have fully experienced playing CoH.
Level 50 isn't the end, nor does it stop you from creating other characters and trying out other power sets.
There is a lot to experience in this game.
Level 50 isn't the end. Level 50 isn't the goal....for me at least...
I don't play my level 50's a lot, but I have many more characters that aren't level 50.
I personally find it fun to play with new players that are experiencing this great game for the first time because they aren't jaded by having a 50 and thinking that nothing new happens in the City.
I see new content in the City everyday. I'm not talking about new maps or new powers. I'm talking about new experiences within the environment generated by interacting with other players and characters with different power sets.
At level 50, you can join any level team and have some fun. The whole game is out there for you to explore. -
City of Villains.
City of Villains was CoH 2.
GR will be CoH 3. -
Quote:I don't think AE is an abomination.Just go back in time and prevent the abomination that was AE from ever happening.
I think what players did with it and are still doing with it are abominations (exploits) that need to be corrected.
The AE is a very powerful tool - that when used correctly - can be a great boon to this game.
I agree it has been abused like crazy, is still being abused, and the abuse missions far out number the number of missions that were actually made to tell stories.
It was because it was so easy to abuse that so many new players joined from other games. New players that weren't here to play a MMORPG in the super hero genre, but new players that were simply here because they could exploit the system.
When all you do is run farms in the AE or even Farms in the rest of the game, you aren't playing a super hero game. Your are simply trying to work the system and the genre has nothing to do with it.
There were Farms before the AE. There will be farms as long as players can run the same mission over and over again.
Is this where I get to complain about being EXPECTED to run Holiday missions over and over again ad naseum?
I guess that's for the suggestion forums...oh, we are here...
Yeah, at least give us some different maps!
How hard is to make at least one new holiday mission for an event each year?!
[Edit]
Oh, forgot to say how to stop the inflation.
Stop paying high prices for items. If the don't sell, then people will stop posting them for those crazy high prices.
