Newbie - Characters are disappearing...

whenever I create a character, save the character, play the character and spend hours trying to train up and level up. When I close the game and restart it, the character is gone.

Are these gone forever?

Are you picking the same server each time?

Make sure you are selecting the same server you did the last time. The most recent server you used is listed at the top.

Also, there is more than 1 page of characters, make sure you check the first page again.

Characters are server specific - are you checking the server you created them on?

Make sure
1. You are choosing the correct server - characters are server-specific, so cannot be found anywhere but their originating server
2. You are paging through all the character slots - there are 3 pages worth - sometimes a bug moves around created characters

Ummmm.... that is not normal. The first thing to do is check the servers. Characters are server specific so log on and check every server and see if you made the character on the wrong server. The server list rearranges itself every time you log on so I recommend writing down a list of the server names and checking off after you check each one.

Secondly the character list is multiple pages, so make sure that you are on the first page for each server.

I realize this is basically the CoH equivalent of the IT technique of telling you to pull the plug out and blow the dust off it in order to get you to verify that you actually have it plugged in but it's the most likely answer. If you do it and find that you definitely did not make them in an odd place you should contact customer support because it means your account is bugged.

Thanks, I didn't realize the most recent server was different from the one I used last time. I have just picked the one at the top...evidently my daughter uses a different server.

I would also add to check all pages if you are certain of the server. While the 1st 12 SHOULD all appear on the 1st page, they can slide to another page rarely. (It's happened to my account on Pinnacle.)

I had this happen to me a lot when I first came back to the game. It was quite frustrating, I agree. Then, one day I just happen to be looking around in my computer files, and found a list of my characters, and what server they were on.

So, typically the game is installed into
C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\

There's a folder in here with the name of your account. Lets pretend your account name is "superherobob".

The path would look like this:
C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\superherobob\playerslot.txt

The text you can read will have your characters, what server they're on, and what position slot (Like, position 0 will be the top slot, 1 will be the second, etc). For the most part, it will point you in the right direction of where you were.

Example:

"AccountName" "Server" "CharacterName" "Position In Selection Screen"
"superherobob" "Infinity" "Bob the SuperDuper" "2" <---A character you should be able to play.
"superherobob" "ÝÝÝÝÝøS¤¹" "Bob the OtherSuper" "0" <---A character you deleted or renamed or something.
