None of them. I was considering GW2 because of the fact some of my SG buddies on CoH had tried the beta (before the announcement) had really enjoyed it and suggested I try it. I do have to admit too that I have looked at some of the gameplay videos and it does look quite cool, but I really feel it'd be like cheating on my beloved CoH. Probably cutting my nose to spite my face, but there it is.
I've downloaded Champions and will probably get my Superhero fix from that after the doors close at the end of November, but really there's not been a single MMO that dares to do anything different from any of the others (when it really comes down to it). Always the same grind for gear that make you end up looking like everyone else. Always the same elitist, loud mouthed children that think they're the greatest gift to comedy since Monty Python that play them and very little scope at all to explore the lore of the game or give any real depth to the characters.
Given the current climate of super hero movies, its always surprised me that there haven't been more RPGs that are built on that genre so that we are given more choice to the standard "pew pew soldier" or poxy dwarf / mage / elf tired rubbish that's been done to death. -
I downloaded Champions last night. Seems to have a number of positive changes made to it since I last played. It's just not the same though
. However, if CoH doesn't have any kind of rescue plan formulated by another publisher and I have no other option, I'll probably persevere with it.

Quote:The only problem I have with that viewpoint is that from what we know NCSoft are already doing that. Why would another company buy it to bury it if the current owner plans to bury it anyway? Not to put a damper on this, but I mentioned this topic to my wife, and she brought up a very dismal possibility. SOE may want the CoH IP just to bury it, to ensure nobody else revives it as a competitor to DCUO. I hope that's not the case (seems like a drastic step for a game that's essentially dead anyway), but it's a possibility we might have to face.

I'm remaining cautiously optimistic about something like this being the future of CoX as with the best will in the world trying to reverse engineer a private server or spamming MD's of favoured gaming houses is unlikely to come out well. Assuming NCSoft are open to offers this has to be the way forward that's best for everyone.
As for those of you worried about companies like SoE and EA picking up the reigns, it's not necessarily going to end badly. EA purchased Mythic Entertainment, the company behind Dark Age of Camelot and that game has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence and remains largely untouched by the big bad corporate monster.
I'm going to spend the next couple of months playing as if I'll never be able to play CoH again, but I will be closely following this rumour to see whether or not that's going to be necessary. -
You're suggesting then that if Mother Teresa became Harold Shipman, she should be let off?
I get the point of what you're saying, but it really doesn't hold any water.
Additionally, why are you so keen to try and dumb down the ire directed towards NCSoft? I believe this is your second post on the subject. -
This post is a perfect example of why shutting CoH was just the most ridiculous move. Here we have a player who has come to us from "The Juggernaught". He's played it (CoH), loved it, and already has a head full of ideas from the wonderful imagination canvas that the game provides.
NCSoft, you are quite clearly mad. Honestly, get help; you're a danger to yourselves. -
Thank you Positron for your passion and your vision with City of Heroes. The reason it kept me and I'm sure many others coming back is precisely because it wasn't "Just Another Cookie Cutter WoW Clone". You did things differently. You did things RIGHT. It's only a shame other developers don't have the same mind set that actually, if you want to take on WoW, the way to do it is not to emulate, but to innovate.
I'm glad I'm following you on Twitter and like others I'll be eagerly waiting to see where you and perhaps even others from your team end up, because I'm pretty sure it'll be a title I'll enjoy regardless of genre. Whilst your thanking of us, your loyal followers, is ingratiating, it should also be pointed out that if it wasn't for your passion, your talent and you just "getting it" in terms of what makes a game FUN, we probably wouldn't be as loyal to CoH in the first place.
There is no other game that allows me to let my imagination go completely nuts without limits and not only create a character, but really BE that character (and I don't even RP!)
Whilst I'm sad that this is the end for CoH, I'm eagerly anticipating the beginning of the next title where you have a senior design role. -
Taking as much video and still footage as I can of all of my favourite characters and particularly my stone melee / firey aura brute, Volkanik (Union / Blue Side), so that I can still "play" them even after the lights go out.
-
Yup pretty much sums up my play habits too. I've tried EvE a couple of times, tried Rift, Guild Wars, Dark Age of Camelot, Age of Conan, Champions Online and the same thing always happens; no matter how good those games are and what their individual merits are, I always find something missing, something that's just not right and end up coming back to CoH.
CoH has always tried to be its own game and not ever billed as a "potential WoW killer". That way it has its own personality and its own feel instead of trying desperately to come up with a magic formula for success by copying one that's already in place. Sure it has its little annoying quirks, but there's enough stuff that's done right that means whenever you log in you know you're going to have fun. No other game I've played has managed to capture that. -
My mugshots are in my CoH Faces profile in the link in my sig. Pics mainly taken at various incarnations of the Download Rock Festival in the UK (Formerly known as Donnington Monsters of Rock)

Tonight is the first time I've ever gotten this emotional over a computer game. -
Like others I honestly haven't got a clue. CoH was the first MMO I played only because it's super hero based rather than the generic and rather long-in-the-tooth fantasy genre. I've tried loads of others including Champions, EvE, Rift, Age of Conan, Dark Age of Camelot and SWG but they've never really felt "right". CO is mind numbingly boring and repetitive so I doubt I'll be going back there. DCUO looks nice, but the DC Universe doesn't appeal.
I had a fairly long break from CoH up until about May of this year and spent a couple of hours on MMORPG.com looking at various games to see if there was a gem I might have missed. None of the games that were out or due out (including GW2, incidentally) really appealed largely because they were based in a fantasy setting.
The only other possibility is MechWarrior Online which is due for release over the next couple of months. That said, I managed to get my girlfriend to play CoH and she absolutely loves it and is possibly even sadder than me at the news of its demise. I'd prefer a game that we can play together, and I think MWO might be a bit too hardcore for her tastes. (And what's weird is I'm still finding it hard to believe that I would be sat here typing a post with the line "News of City of Heroes' demise" any time soon). -
And not just SMASH.
SEISMIC SMASH!
With no more Volkanik what am I going to do for therapy?
Just glad I made this when I did:

I'm a long time EU player (on Union) and just wondering if there are any SG's looking for players who tend to be around during the hours of 6-10pm BST on Virtue. I'm not really in to RP or PVP and would prefer to play with people over the age of 25.
(Why does this sound like a lonely hearts ad?).
Anyhoo.. if this sounds like your SG, please do reply here or hit me up in game @SteelRat -
Question asked that was answered on page 7 because too lazy to read entire thread.

Quote:Oddly I have the brute version of this combo; Stone Melee / Firey Aura, and surprise surprise he's called "Volkanik". Had him as a villain ages ago and GR'd him over to blue side back in i19 ish. He's my main character now my only T3 incarnate and playing him is pure joy almost to the point of therapy.I have a Fire/Stone/Stone tank who I adore, I have no idea if that's a common combo or not but I really only made it when power customisation came out and I wanted to use the volcanic-style Stone Melee and Fire was the only defense set besides Stone which fit the theme.
I'm not sure if "synergy" is the right word but Fiery Aura and Stone Melee really make up for each others weaknesses well. All the KD, disorients, and of course Seismic Slam really helps survive situations that other Fire tanks would weep at, and Burn, Fiery Embrace and a solid damage aura all help to compensate for Stone Melee's poor aoe damage. -
Quote:^^ Very much this. Fairly aptly sums up my feelings too. I've tried a slew of other games and none of them "feels" as right as this one does. I have to say too that Paragon Studios seem to have really upped their game development wise in recent times too. Really enjoyed yesterdays coffee talk and listening to the way the game and the story is going to progress over the coming issues.Ooh yes, several times.
Everytime I try a new MMO it reminds me of why I love this game so much and I come back to it in short order.. I don't think any other MMO has held my attention for more than 1 month for years now. While CoH keeps me occupied year round.. Granted I'm not as hardcore as I once was, but I still get decent playtime in.
A few reasons why I keep coming back.
The community - MMO players as a whole are usually quite immature. This does not seem to be as true in CoH, even after the flux of F2P players (I have heard more raunchy jokes/comments in the last year than the previous 6 combined.. But its still a far cry from other games)
Costume Editor - 'Nuff said.
Ability to have unique builds - This is a biggy for me.. I love tinkering with builds and leveling them up. Many other games either have a cookie-cutter level progression (IE everyone gets the same skills at specific levels) or a talent tree. Talent trees are nice, but pale in comparison to this game's build system. The difference between two characters with the same AT/Powersets can be extremely robust, and I love it.
Enhancements - I love the idea of enhancements. I like being able to tweak the attributes of powers to my liking. Many times when I'm playing another MMO I'll look at one of my abilities, look at the cooldown and say "well I could half that with SO.. err.. wait, no I cant". It makes me feel restricted knowing I'm stuck with a specific set of attributes that the Devs set beforehand, with very little ways to adjust it outside of maybe a talent or two.
And lately I have grown quite fond of our dev team, and how much they actually communicate with the player base. They might not do everything we want, with good reason I might add, but they sure interact a heck of a lot more than most dev teams do. -
It would be rude for me not to add my tribute given my login name. I still have all of the Stainless Steel Rat books and to this day it remains one of my all time characters and sci fi series.
This is a sad loss for sci fi lovers everywhere. -
OK.. after a couple more attempts, I've come up with this. Thought it was OK until I realised that at lvl 38 I only really have 3 attacks slotted and one of those is on a 2 minute cool down. I was originally going to skip flares until I saw that even though its base damage is low, its recharge time means that it does the same damage than Fire Blast over the same amount of time.
As it is the recharge and defense numbers aren't great, although S/L resistance with those defense numbers isn't too bad, although I don't think I'll be farming with it any time soon!
Any help in freeing slots up and / or making better use of the slots I have will be gratefully received.

Never really been able to get in to Domi's before, but this Dark / Fire character I started a couple of weeks ago, I'm really enjoying. He's currently at level 37 and I'm thinking about IOs and a good all round build for him that I can take in to Incarnates and perhaps even some farming (if it's viable).
Ancilliary choice is likely to be Psi or Fire, but I'm leaning towards Psi particularly if I can get enough recharge in there. I've had a couple of goes in mids to get something half decent (and not ridiculously expensive) but I seem to always be a bit short on slots. Anyone got an example build I can have a look at? -
First day went pretty well. If any of you teamed with Nether-Region this afternoon, thanks.. had a blast.
More of the same tomorrow from 9 or there abouts. -
Yup... we've been on tonight. I'll chuck you a tell in the morning now I have your global. Cheers
-
Big fat NO to this suggestion. Both are fine as they are. Whilst they might both appear to fill the same role, they both fill that role in ways different enough to warrant being kept seperate.

Ladies, Gents, Beasts, Aliens and All Manner of Other Things On Union.
This weekend starting from around 7pm tonight (UK time) and through most of the way till 4pm of Sunday afternoon (breaking between 12 midnight and around 9am for sleep), myself and my significant other will be running a variety of mission and TF teams on blueside. If any of you good people wish to join us please do send a message to me on @SteelRat.
I'm not setting anything in stone about WHAT we do, only the fact that we're here for the duration. If you're struggling to get in on the DXP goodness give us a shout! -
Perhaps the more relevant question is how many Fire / MC characters in a white gi with a red headband or orange / blue gi with black spikey hair will be created within the first hour of the sets going live? My guess would be somewhere in the region of 3-400.

I wonder whether Electric Blast has come under scrutiny now is down to Blasters being looked as a whole, or the fact that we now have an Electic Control primary for Dominators.
Reason I mention this is that I was discussing an IO respec for my aging E3 blaster in another thread and the comment was made that such characters tend to play more like dominators than blasters, which certainly describes the way I tend to play mine to get the best out of him as well.
Now don't get me wrong, that's all well and good, but if you have a blaster that plays like a dominator, and a dominator that has the tools to play like a dominator with most of the same tools as the blasters plus a few extras as well, isn't it reasonable to expect the blaster version to be modified so that it plays at least more like a blaster and therefore able to do things the dominator cant? If not, your original blaster becomes somewhat obsolete.
Bare in mind too that the older blast sets like Electric were conceived in a time before Dominators even existed as an AT, and so its reasonable to assume they were given this hybrid role to offer players something different in blaster play style.
