Anyone else find themselves coming back...

Anyone ever feel bored of this game or unwilling to put more effort into it but always come back to it? I've tried to leave several times for different games but always find myself wondering back to the CoH login screen to play around a little. Anyone else have this issue?

Well, I've been RPing instead of any actual missioning outside of the SSA. Does that count?

Yeah, I take breaks from the game fairly often, several months at a time. If I get bored, I find something else to do.

I always feel refreshed on CoH afterwards.

I also tend to play different variations of CoH to keep it fresh - eg working heavily with a supergroup for a while, followed by a string of experimental lowbies, and now followed by incarnating out several existing characters who I'd shelved way back.
After that I'm thinking of starting a new villain - I havent been redside in years.

So far, I've always come back one way or another.

Yep I'll regularly burn out and take a break until something makes me decide to come back. I rarely play other MMOs in the interim but I tend to catch up on single player games that I haven't had time for.

Several times.

You're describing a phenomenon that happens to most people after a long enough period of time. It's simply burnout. Nothing wrong with it. You just need a break and a change of scenery. Go play a different game. Come back in a month or three or six. The change will do you good and it may give you a new appreciation for what you enjoyed here in the past.

Ooh yes, several times.

Everytime I try a new MMO it reminds me of why I love this game so much and I come back to it in short order.. I don't think any other MMO has held my attention for more than 1 month for years now. While CoH keeps me occupied year round.. Granted I'm not as hardcore as I once was, but I still get decent playtime in.

A few reasons why I keep coming back.

The community - MMO players as a whole are usually quite immature. This does not seem to be as true in CoH, even after the flux of F2P players (I have heard more raunchy jokes/comments in the last year than the previous 6 combined.. But its still a far cry from other games)

Costume Editor - 'Nuff said.

Ability to have unique builds - This is a biggy for me.. I love tinkering with builds and leveling them up. Many other games either have a cookie-cutter level progression (IE everyone gets the same skills at specific levels) or a talent tree. Talent trees are nice, but pale in comparison to this game's build system. The difference between two characters with the same AT/Powersets can be extremely robust, and I love it.

Enhancements - I love the idea of enhancements. I like being able to tweak the attributes of powers to my liking. Many times when I'm playing another MMO I'll look at one of my abilities, look at the cooldown and say "well I could half that with SO.. err.. wait, no I cant". It makes me feel restricted knowing I'm stuck with a specific set of attributes that the Devs set beforehand, with very little ways to adjust it outside of maybe a talent or two.

And lately I have grown quite fond of our dev team, and how much they actually communicate with the player base. They might not do everything we want, with good reason I might add, but they sure interact a heck of a lot more than most dev teams do.

I barely play the game right now. I've constantly been hooked by some new shiny game in the last year or so (currently SERIOUSLY hooked on some Lovecraftian horror, look up Agge sometime!). I figure a month or two after GW2 comes out, I'll settle back in lovingly with my BFF, City. Then WildStar will come out and I'll step away for a while again, but I'll always be back. City is my BFF.

^^ Very much this. Fairly aptly sums up my feelings too. I've tried a slew of other games and none of them "feels" as right as this one does. I have to say too that Paragon Studios seem to have really upped their game development wise in recent times too. Really enjoyed yesterdays coffee talk and listening to the way the game and the story is going to progress over the coming issues.

At some level I don't think it's right to keep playing the same video game for more than a few months, much less years, but for better or worse CoH is so far above the competition any alternative can't be more than temporary.

The actual gameplay is quite dynamic, too. To me, it feels more like stuff happening than watching a picture of stuff happening.

Concur.

Also, judging from your forum account name, condolences are in order.

I do take breaks, but not to play other games. I will start working on the guitar, or drawing, or writing. But there is no other game that combines what I like the most the way CoH does. The character generator and costume design is very good. I believe it was in a class by itself 5 years ago when I started playing. There are probably some titles out there that come close today. But I discovered the I/O system. The ability to take a standard character and softcap them to range def, or s/l, or permadom, or whatever is very nice. But the thing that lets me know I will not be going anywhere is the community I have discovered. I can't believe it but I even like the costume contests now lol.
