  1. This is the fourth time in three days that Virtue is reported as being down.

This is really getting unacceptable; and your maintenance team had planned to move to once a week maintenance periods? Yeah, RIIIIIGHT.
  2. Why is City of Heroes launching MSMSGS.EXE?

There is no reason for City of Heroes to launch Microsoft Messenger, Microsoft's instant messaging client. This is NOT the Messenger network service, nor is it needed in any way for City of Heroes.

But invariably, at some point during the night, City of Heroes launches MSN Messenger.

It doesn't show up on my screen, only when I pull up Task Manager. And it makes me think that THIS behavior is part of what's behind my constant mapservers, bandwidth issues, etc. for the last three days.
  3. That's only part of the problem, though.

City of Heroes throttles my bandwidth pretty dramatically. Last night my reported bandwidth went, consistently, from 270 mbps down to 13.5, and then after a while at 13.5, the game would crash.

Repeat. Repeat, repeat. I couldn't stay in game for more than twenty minutes or so.

This was on Virtue, which has crashed three times in forty-eight hours now, so that might have something to do with it, but still.

I've experienced, and other people have reported as well, out of order packets and severe chat lag, to the point it's clear something has gone wrong with the way City of Heroes handles the TCP/IP stack.

For me, this issue has only cropped up after the latest patch to Live, the one that fixed the Respec crashing. However, other people have reported having this problem since beta of I 17 in MARCH.

Anaharra, that's *definitely* a power supply problem. You need to get a power supply that will support that card. It won't be a cheap $10-$20 dollar one, it'll have to be something in the $40-$80 dollar range, as I recall.

Look for the technical specifications on your 250 GTS and then look for a power supply that's marked "SLI Ready". That usually means the power supply manufacturer has taken into account that the power supply will have to power multiple video cards, and should be able to power your 250 GTS and the rest of your system adequately.
  5. Another thing I noticed is that you have two sound devices installed on your system. If possible, disable the device you're not using in Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager - Audio Devices.

Also, update to Windows XP, SP3. Any worries you might have had with it when it was released years ago are well past.

That won't fix the memory leak problem, which is kind of erratic, but seems to be limited to ATI chipsets for the moment, unfortunately, judging from the complaints and reports of problems on this forum.
  6. The fact that Recommended mode is still causing a memory leak leads me to think that Ultra mode settings are only part of the problem. Recommended does not, to my knowledge, actually set any of the Ultra mode options.

That makes me think the primary culprit is Bloom, followed by Ambient Occlusion, Shadows, and Water Effects.
  7. As the title says.
Did anyone see a 'We are shutting the server down" warning or did it just crash?

    That's 6:54 pm EDT, sorry.
  8. Thank you for the changes, Castle. This should be a very good compromise between the original and mostly untested design with 50 hold protection, and the design intent behind the mitos.

EDIT: The design intent for Green Mitos is you essentially HAVE to hold them or they are nigh unkillable.
That strikes me as being quite a backwards step in Task Force design. 50 points of hold protection makes it almost impossible to hold them without having a team primarily composed of Dominators and/or Controllers.

This may be fine on a Hamidon Raid, which is not limited to eight characters total, but is unacceptable on a Task Force, which IS.

Any time you need a preponderance of any one archetype in team composition, you have a fail situation for the majority of teams playing the content.
  10. Congratulations! I hope you all have a long and successful run; I know from hanging out with other internet DJs that running an internet music station can be quite complex.

I wish you all the best!
  11. To be an effective damage dealer as a Human Form peacebringer, you need to load up on +damage global bonuses from IO sets and +recharge from the same.

You will still not be as damaging as a Warshade. Humanform Peacebringer's strength is endurance and single target damage with the melee attacks.
  12. From the look of it, the 197.45 driver does not support the features in the 197.44 preview driver.

What I see about the 197.45 driver is that it supports up to OpenGL 3.2.

The 197.44 preview driver supports OpenGL 3.3 and OpenGL 4 for the Fermi GPUs.
  13. This is not a bug.

[AUTO-REPLY: Chat hidden] means that the character you are sending a tell to is not able to see Chat at the moment. The character may be in the tailor, respec, or enhancement placement screens. This is a quality of life feature.

    Thank you, Castle.

This is the kind of communication that I, as a player, have never ever gotten from any other development team of any other MMORPG that I have ever played.

This kind of openness and willingness to talk about things going on behind the scenes is refreshing, amazing, and very very very welcome. I dare say that it is practically unique among the industry, and it is the reason I consider City of Heroes to be the best MMORPG with the best community and the best development team ever.
  15. Thank you for the walkthrough, Positron.
  16. One global name, 30 characters. Fifteen redside, fifteen blueside.

Could you walk us through the steps to mail from one character on my account to another character on my account?

For instance, say that I send an item from one of my characters to another character that could use the IO.

Does the attachment immediately show up in the sending character's mailbox, because I'm sending it to my global name?

If I log onto yet another character instead of immediately logging into the recieving character, does that mean that this third charcter will get the item instead of the character I intended to send it to?

Does global in-game e-mail have a different e-mail box than e-mail directed to a specific character?
  17. City of Heroes has only supported one particular iteration of PhysX cards, and that was before nVidia bought that company and integrated it into their GEForce series.

The PhysX programming for City of Heroes has not been updated since.
  18. No.. if you want to get this resolved, file a customer service ticket if you havent' done so already. Include character name, the name of the starting server, the name of the destination server.
  19. There is a separate server cluster for global chat channels, if I remember right.

That's why you get a situation where you can play the game, but cant' see any global chat channels or send people tells based on their global name, or see your global friends list.

They've been promising to upgrade the global chat server for a while now, and perhaps they actually have. I have noticed, lately, the global chat server doesn't spontaneously disconnect people nearly as often as it used to.

However, it is still not up to par with the rest of the service, IMO.

Your global friends list is still stored on the global chat server, and will be restored when it comes back up.
  20. Ah. I suppose it's a good thing I've uninstalled QuickTime on my machine then.
  21. Transferring the operating system from one drive to another shouldnt' be too difficult. There are several programs out there that could manage this for you. I would recommend looking for a program that says it can clone system drives, as the OS can and will "protect" itself by hiding files from regular copying.

    Hover and pets

Part of it is a matter of animations. A "mid air casting" animation for a particular power may simply not have been designed and implemented. Part of it is a design decision behind that particular power.
  23. Another way to assure you don't get spammed is to type /hide and select "Hide from searches". This will prevent RMT spammers from collecting your character name through /whoall, and that means you don't get new spam.

If you're already on a spammers list, however, the only recourse you have is to hit the "spam" button on the e-mail you recieve.
  24. The login servers seem to be very unstable these days. The crashes Virtue, Justice, and Guardian experienced over the weekend, combined with the difficulty some people (including myself) had when trying to log into other servers, well.

It points to issues with the login server, not with your account. The message "already in use" can be an indication your account was hijacked, BUT it can also, and more likely, indicate an incomplete logout that has yet to be resolved. The server restart this morning should have fixed it.
  25. Do not use the "official forums" export that's built into MIDs. It worked for the OLD forums, but the new forums treat the formatting code differently.
