Special Nvidia driver gives you moar FPS for Ultra Mode!
Ripped from my post below, here is my Nvidia driver "discovery", as it would be nice to have in an easy to see place.

After googleing I found Nvidia's page, I'm not sure how easy it is to find if you don't know about it beforehand.

Anyway for posterity's sake here's the page with the info on the driver (and the linkies for DL) that adds OpenGL4.0 to Fermi-based cards and OpenGL3.3 to everything else (G80 tech and up). CLICK ME NAO

Back on the topic of performance, I just installed this new driver and noticed a REDICULOUS gain in performance. I was able to bump everything but AO to max ultra settings (over my compromises before, which left me at a little better than Ultra basics) for a solid 30 FPS with the camera centered on the horizon, with nary a dip here and there on crowded scenes. Tip the camera down or up a little and it goes up to around 45.
Not only all this, but CoX has finally stopped eating 100% of my cpu. It's hovering between 70-85%. Which means the annoying stutter in my movement I was experiencing on both clients has gone away completely.

And now I am finally satisfied with i17. Nao gimmeh da GR. I want Kinetic Melee!

They don't? Huh. I could have sworn it was posted the first day of Open Beta.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Ah! I am sorry, Texas Justice! I had skimmed je_saist's post earlier and had stopped scrolling down once I made the incorrect determination that it was simply a performance display on capable hardware for Ultra. Thank you for pointing me back in the right direction.

Glad to help.

Well, I'd say spam The Television, Tex and GPU with PM's about it, but ... I don't want them having any reason to ask that the ban hammer swing my direction.

Some might enjoy swinging it a bit too much.

Has anyone tested how much of a difference the -slifbos 2 command actually makes? I'm wondering if I should use it when i17 comes out. Qualitatively I couldn't see much difference.

je_saist mentioned this little thing at the end, mentioning her triple-sli config being able to run ultra settings at a nice res with a "playable" framerate. It seems like she might not have been able to crank it up and achieve that "high" of FPS on her system had she not used the kludge. So if you had, say two 275's, i'm sure there would be a noticeable improvement.

Tex linked to it in his reply to my post.
Here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=217610

I am curious though, since I have a rather unique GPU. An EVGA 275/250 Co-op card (newegg.com), to be exact. I figured that this switch would somehow allow me to get in the same boat as two-card sli'ers, but I have my doubts. At the moment I've got the 250 running PhysX, so I'm thinking if I stop that they might work in tandem on GFX processing.

Edit: I just turned PhysX GPU acceleration off and i got about 6 extra FPS. At how low it is already thats a definate improvement. Now if only I could figure out why CoX has been eating 100% cpu cycles ...

archaeum, I can confirm some boost on my system with that new OpenGL driver.

With a 8800GTX, Ultra on most things except character and world detail and low shadow saturation, outside it was a solid 15 fps, dropping to 10 occasionally, 2 rarely. Playable for me, if with a bit of noticeable jerkiness. But hey, I did claymation in junior high school, so that was OK with me. Inside I had a solid 20 fps, no matter if alone or on a team.

Upgrading to the new OpenGL drivers (installed over the top of the previous one) now I see around 20 fps looking over long vistas, slowing to 15 fps minimum jumping around and looking at shadows. "Claymation" effect is almost not noticeable. Inside I have a solid 30 fps.

So I rate it a "win" from my side! Thanks for the tip!

No problem, glad to have that confirmed.

Oh yes thanks, so very helpful. Didn't occur to you that the command is totally unsupported and was thrown in as a really under-the-table kinda deal? That I thought it might not be in the official /cmdlist? And that someone else already pointed me to the answer with the first reply to this thread? Good job!

Eh well, tried that driver.

no change on my 8800GTs GTX260 or 8600GT.

Is this something that deserves posting in General Discussion for those wanting better performance from their video cards? At the very least I'd be hollering at the Devs to mention this for any sort of guide to utlising Ultra Mode.

Hmm...ok, I'll bite; what does it do? And is there much point using it on a 9800 GT? I can get fairly decent UM levels out of it, but with a slight dip in speed from what Live has at the moment.
Would this doohicky help? And is it potentially harmful, or an actual Nvidia driver?

It is a preview nVidia driver Techbot, so there should be no downside. I did see a noticeable improvement in my 8800GTX (above) of around 5 fps outside (15 stable to 15-25 variable). It seems that the driver adds more support for OpenGL. It is conceivable to me that not all cards benefit equally. The 8800 GTX is equivalent to/slightly better than the 9800GT, but being a generation behind maybe its driver was missing some optimization. So, you might or might not see a benefit. No harm in trying though I don't think.

So that preview driver is 197.44 as of 4/12, but the latest driver is 197.45 as of 4/13. Does the latest driver incorporate what was in that preview driver?

Posted

From the look of it, the 197.45 driver does not support the features in the 197.44 preview driver.

What I see about the 197.45 driver is that it supports up to OpenGL 3.2.

The 197.44 preview driver supports OpenGL 3.3 and OpenGL 4 for the Fermi GPUs.

I have a GEForce 9600M GT laptop card, and I noticed a definitive improvement in FPS... I had to put all the UM settings to "medium" previously to get a full 30FPS, but now with that new driver installed that supports OpenGL 3.3 and OpenGL 4, I can get 30FPS with all the UM settings on "high" or "Ultra" (depending on the setting).

Thanks for this!

Alright, I looked up the unofficial command and attempted to use it. Causes either a hang up, or instant crash to the desktop, no matter what zone I attempt to log into.

I tried downloading those drivers, but my computer claim's they are older drivers.

By the way...is this command only for the test server? Because I removed the -test portion and added it to a Live server shortcut. Seem's to load halfway before it crashes.

I am using 2 260 gtx's in my machine. I am going to try to find a newer version of those drivers, and if that fails, just download the older drivers and see if that gives me a performance boost.
