Having a Problem with the Login in.

Hi my name is Ascalon I'm a player on the Virtue Server and I'm having a bit of a problem. I tried to log into City of Heroes today and I'm running into two issues. One every time I try to log in with my name and password it says its already in use, and then when I try to pick a server, Any server my game crashes. What can I do to fix this?

Also please describe the crash. Any error messages? If so, what does it say? When does the crash happen?

If it says already in use or that the account is already logged in it's because you crashed and restarted the game and logged in before your previous login had timed out. That's normal.

The CohHelper, HijackThis and any error messages or a better crash description will allow the folks here to help you a bit better.

Alright here are the COHelper and HijackThis logs, I don't understand how they will help but I'm willing to try. As for the problem like I said I log into the game, try to pick the server i want to play. The game sits there for a moment and I get the box that says City of Heroes has experinced an error. When i check the log it says it had an error with a CityofHeroes.mdmp. I don't know how much helpful I can be.

Your video driver is 2 years old. Try upgrading it.

Any recommendations on how to do that. Last time I tried to update my drivers I couldn't access CoH at all and when I could my graphics were distorted and the game would eventually lock up. I just don't understand how the game was working perfectly fine last night. Will updating my video drivers actual fix the problem?

Oh you didn't indicate that the problem was fine one day and broken the next. I thought you were brand new to the game. Sorry. New drivers can't hurt. Any of your friends or family members computer literate?

Generally the steps are:

1. Download the latest ATI drivers for your card
2. Boot into Safe Mode and remove the current drivers
3. Reboot into normal mode
4. Install the new drivers

I have always had Nvidia cards so I'm not sure how the ATI drivers differ.

If you don't want to do the driver upgrade you could try running the game in Safe Mode and see if it lets you in. You can do that by starting the game and clicking on the Safe Mode checkbox.

Another thing you can try is run msconfig and disable all of the non Microsoft services (only run what's needed), reboot then try the game.

However if you're not that comfortable making these kinds of changes I suggest working with a friend or family member on this kind of troubleshooting. For example you may lose internet access and not know how to get it back.

It isn't just you, I can't get into the log in server either

Well I've yet to get it to work, I've tried everything except updating my drivers due to the previous problem I've encountered with that. Sadly my system is stubborn and doesn't seem to like updates, atleast not when it comes to City of Heroes. I'm dreading having to reinstall aswell. Are there any other options could it have to do with the .mdmp. file.

The login servers seem to be very unstable these days. The crashes Virtue, Justice, and Guardian experienced over the weekend, combined with the difficulty some people (including myself) had when trying to log into other servers, well.

It points to issues with the login server, not with your account. The message "already in use" can be an indication your account was hijacked, BUT it can also, and more likely, indicate an incomplete logout that has yet to be resolved. The server restart this morning should have fixed it.
