Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves.

Half of you making the complaints are TF farmers who just can't be bothered; the other half I suspect went through their own "newbie" phase and how *quickly* you forget how we, the first generation of players, carried you along as we hooked you up and waited patiently for you to find your groove.

I've never been as downright obnoxious to new players as y'all are doing now just by listing your complaints out in this thread. Get over yourselves and give new players a chance.

Threads bemoaning new players like this are *much* much worse than anything Positron had to say about MA abuses and it works against everything the Devs do to solicit new players to try the game.

I'm not saying you're wrong for being frustrated, but I do think you're wrong for being uncooperative and airing dirty laundry like this.

    Seriously, its just not cool.

What part of "Clueless level 50" do you not understand?

It doesn't have to be an MA-PL'd character, it could be an account that someone just bought off of eBay. Doesn't matter. If you're running around on a 50, the expectation is that you don't NEED help with the basics.

The expectation would be similar to that of a race driver needing instruction on how to drive his car into the paddock area of the track, cos all he knows how to do is run the track itself. Such a driver would get funny looks from his pit crew, if not outright fired from his team.
  2. you should be able to save your preferred "default" control set, now.

How in the **** have I cheated myself out of content I personally have done over 50 times?

I hate that side of the fence, "Oh you will cheat yourself out of doing the same **** you have already done a bazillion times"

If someone has over 20 50s in this game and they are still playing it, really it shouldnt matter to you at all what they are doing or why, unless they break the TOS or EULA.

The question was "should newbies PL?", Pain. Not vets.
  4. Mids, thank you, very much.

Steiner, I have one thing to say:

Hope Mids used LOTS of code comments!!!
  5. New player, PL their first character?

Not only no, but HELL NO.

"When I was a new player, we slogged thru Perez and the Hollows on foot, without a mission teleporter or a map, and we LIKED IT!"

... well, no, we didn't. But we sure learned how to play pretty effectively.

Dumb the game down enough... and only dummies will want to play.

Guess that makes me a dummy, doesn't it?
  6. ... lesee... Zero Suit Samus comes to mind...

    *ducks*
  7. I'll take "As Many As I Can Handle" for a thousand, Alex.
  8. The one thing that turned me off about Malta was when I was against them on my KinFender. Gunslingers would ALWAYS cryo-lock, and then I'd get faceplanted.

... until I hit Epic PP's. Helllloooo, Psychic Mastery!

... now I sleep them from range, plant holds on the nasty ones, and then sap them with Transference while they're the ones locked up. Heee!

... and as for my Mastermind, Malta = target practice, plain and simple.
  9. To be fair, these questions have been asked often by, oh, level ones and twos and occasionally a LITTLE higher... on up into the teens, even. No big deal, new players, yeah? Welcome, have fun, glad you're here playing our favorite game.

But coming from 50's, it's, well... comedy gold, is what it is.
  10. Yep. if you deleted your level 50 Villain... you'd best get to leveling up the Next Contender...
  11. OK, in all seriousness... I believe they ARE loaded.

Why? Because unlike an instance mission (which only has to scale for eight characters max AND can be 'kickstarted' on the instance server when the mission is accepted) the zones would take too bloody long to load for the first person entering them. Everything IN the zone has to be instanced, which would mean the server has to set aside the resources, run the AI code, et cetera. I'm fairly sure that all of that takes a bit of time to get going from null. Theoretically you could start it all while the client is loading... but the client has to be taking cues from the server, not the other way around, or someone could theoretically hack things by injecting their own code (say, to disable the fog in DA).

An instance that is in idle state probably doesn't take that much away from resources (there's not much 'happening') once everything is staged. But the staging itself would need to either A) already be taken care of or B) happen rather quickly.
  12. JiI: ... are they still arguing about Schroedinger?

    E, Sally: YES.

    JiI: ....

Arachnos Flier: Hey, guys, I got bored over at my place, no one arou... oo, nice scale patterns, babe! and no tan lines, VERY daring of you...

Sally: *turns red and ducks under the water*

E: ... oh good going, genius. Now the only 'babe' in our weight class is Lusca, and she's TOTALLY clingy, man.

Lusca: ... OOOH I heard my name mentioned! Hiiiiiii! Are we having a party?

    JiI, E, AF, S: ... damnit.
  13. I'm of the mind that everyone ON the team needs to contribute something TO the team.

Aura-rocking 'trollers and corrs? Sorry, you gotta do more than that. Use your primaries, damnit.

Tanks hanging in the back? you better have your teleport prompt on, else you're gonna be IN the thick of things, ohh yes you will....

Blasters doing leeroy jenkins on every spawn? Unless you've got the "Rocks Fall Everyone Dies" trick down pat, stay back and let the tank do the tanking. See "teleport prompt", above, it works the other way, too.

Brutes too chicken to charge? Let me put that size fifteen Witch's Boot up your reluctant heiney, or GET IT IN GEAR!

... I could go on, but I won't. If I catch someone leeching, they're gone. Besides, one less person spamming useless power effects = less lag when we get to the Dreaded Canyon of Dying While Waiting For Powers To Fire.
  14. Let's see:

I've had level 50's ask me the following:

    * Where is City Hall? (I was standing under the atlas statue at the time).

    * How do I buy a cape? (NCsoft Store, same as everything else you buy)

    * Who gives quests? (Well, let's see, you've outleveled nearly everyone, I'd suggest that Selnum guy in PI, or Levantra in the RWZ...)

    * How do I get to the Hollows? (*facepalm* You're not serious... oh snap! you are serious!)

    * Where are the Lost? (uhhh... if we knew that, they wouldn't be Lost... oh, wait you want to hang out with them cos YOU'RE lost, riiight. Skyway, "Land of the Lost" neighborhood. No really, don't mention it.)

    * How do I get into City Hall? (by... opening the door, same as everything else you enter and exit in the game?)

    * Where is the mailbox? (it gets delivered electronically, just click the word Email above your chat area. Oh yeah, when that guy advertises a great rate on gold? it's a really lowball figure. Stand firm, you'll profit.)

    * NED TEAM PLZ - INVITE NAO? ( uhhh... I'm busy erp'ing with this hawt vampire catgirl FBI agent, shoo! )

The answers have been changed to protect the humor, but, yes, the questions are all direct from game chat, folks.
  15. Jack in Irons: I will grind you into PASTE!!
    Eochai: You shall BURN!! MUAHAHHAAHA!!!

JiI:.... wait wait, hold up, there's no one even HERE, man.

E: What, again? Damnit, I thought I had the inflection JUST right that time. "BURRRRN!!" Doesn't that sound just, ominous?

JiI: Yah whatever man, I'mma grab a beer, you want one?

E: .... what? sure. Crack me a keg while you're up.

Sally: Oh dear. I'm so shy in public. I hope no one comes along and SEES me...!!

JiI, Eochai: (look at each other) ... Put on a bathing suit already, you stupid reptile!!
  16. OK.

IF you can manage it, try connecting the desktop via an Ethernet cable.

    1) USB is entirely processor-driven, which means that more traffic = more processor load, usually right when you need the processor to interpret the data, not just manage how it's transported.

    2) Wireless is very much a 'best effort' delivery system, and it can get stepped on very easily even if the other device doesn't have your encryption codes - with anything radio-frequency, strongest signal wins.

By connecting via an Ethernet cable, you bypass BOTH potential issues in one step.

  17. If Windows 7 is like Vista, it's probably trying to 'skin' the game window. You need to tell it not to do that.

Right click on the CityofHeroes.exe icon, and select Properties. On the Compatibility tab, there should be an option to not render the window in Aqua mode. Select that, apply, then try again.
  18. plaync.com

Click on My Account, then log in. Click on your game ID for the CoH game. You should see a "download updater" link on your account summary page.
  19. Run it in safe mode (checkbox on bottom right of EULA screen in the updater) and then adjust your graphics settings, one parameter at a time.

Also, since the AE building/main floor is involved, it'd be good to know what server this is happening on. Consider creating a test character on another server (save your current costume and load it there, if you don't want to recreate it by hand). It MAY be related to the lag issues people see when they approach the AE buildings on crowded servers.

One final question - how are your computers connected to the Internet? DSL/cable/wireless/sat? What's the provider?
  20. What the Zombie said.

Also, when updating your video driver, you should also run DriverCleaner (or equivalent) to clean off your existing video drivers before installing the new ones. We have seen cases where the 'new' driver install still uses the 'old' files if they're still present, leading to .... erratic ... video performance.

It's not like none of us ever tried to enter the tram from the exit door and cursed how the game was broken. <whistles innocently>

    [/ QUOTE ]

Guilty as charged. Although it didn't take me more than a few minutes (and a helpful veteran) to learn that the exit portal could not be used to enter.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
I've been running tons of MArcs on different servers. Never really have to wait long to get a team.

My MArc got broken on the last patch, so I fixed it and republished.

    Emo heroes make me sad.

    I need to run yours.

    The mood on MA

I think the main (!) anti-farming argument is:

"I have to farm to be competitive."

Which may or may not be true, but for those people who want to walk into PvP and not be completely owned, it may be necessary. (Folks like Hugginator, not so much.)

Now for the following, I define "Farming" as setting up a SPECIFIC mission and running it over and over. It could be an AE mission, or it could be a dev-created instance, or a TF such as Katie Hannon or the ITF.

Influence - Used to be a few instance missions on a fifty, and you had enough to SO a lower-level character. Now, with the markets, it costs quite a bit more to get the right 'sets'. Again, farming makes scrounging the money pretty fast.

Levels - it's pretty much the established practice to 'bridge' a lowbie into optimum XP range on a high-level mission, and then having them door-sit while the rest of the team (sometimes one or two characters) does the heavy lifting.

Badge hunters - some badges take a LONG time to accrue the requirements. Farming makes that go by faster.

Purpling out a character - you can either pay at the market... or run lots and lots and lots of 'sweeping' to try and get the recipe drops.

Yes you CAN get these things 'the hard way'... by running missions, arcs, TF's, etc. Farming tends to make it easier and faster at the expense of variety. Sometimes MUCH faster and easier. It's that latter bit that makes farming look like "something everyone has to do" if they want to compete in the big leagues in this game.

... which we know isn't true REALLY, but for a "want-it-now" nation this is what it boils down to.

  24. ... thank you. That was a heart-wrenching and sweet ending to an epic tale. *smiles and wipes away tears*
  25. Players are not dogs.

MOST players are not 16-year-old girls.

    Logical fallacy. Please try again.
