Could you also fix the map so that it actually corresponds to the event, and the markers so they point you in the right direction? Or are players *supposed* to be horribly confused and unable to link up with the team unless they've run the event a few times and know exactly where to go?

Hm. I've never personally encountered the limit, but I'm fairly sure there is a limit. Not sure if it's 5 or 10 or 15 or what.

Open up your Powers window, click on Combat Attributes, in the window that appears, right-click on any attributes you want to track and select "Monitor". You can have up to five selected at any time.

What time on Sundays, usually? I'm in the EU timezone, so US Sunday evening is my Monday "it's going to be dawn soon, why am I still awake".

I'm on Virtue TFs 2010. It's moderately active most days.
  7. Does anyone still run this? Does everyone who could possibly want the badge have the badge already? Does everyone who needs the Penumbra just choose to buy it with Shards? Should I have gotten it while the getting was good (and the nukes weren't disallowed)?

    Discuss.
  8. So apparently one of the Judgement abilities is "Ionic Judgement".

I'm going to have a bind for that: "It's it ionic? Don't you think?"

I hope nobody starts pointing out that my Ionic Judgement is not actually ionic at all, and that in itself is ionic.

It's such a lovely weasel phrase. Not only does it pre-emptively dismiss any contrary opinions, it lets the writer give themselves a moral high ground because at least they are *honest*, unlike everyone else.

    Try it, it's fun!

Whether we are willing to admit it or not, we would all prefer to be playing WoW.

Whether we are willing to admit it or not, we all like to murder someone now and then.

Whether we are willing to admit it or not, we all idolize Justin Beiber.
  11. Perhaps we can finally put the old "if you make a character in CoH you are signing all your rights to them over to NCSoft and can never make anything with them in other media for profit" myth to sleep.

Granted... it's pretty much how all MMOs work... but I really don't like the notion that 'more time to waste' = 'better stuff'. That's also one of the reasons why I left Aion. Thankfully it doesn't affect CoH nearly as much.
I'd blame the high prices more on the lack of Inf sinks (and the fact that there is no way to produce salvage/recipes without also producing Influence). The "average" player doesn't really need more than SOs, which are available at a fixed price. But this is getting off-topic.

I know, right? You devour a couple souls and suddenly people give you the cold shoulder and stop inviting you to parties. And then you do the sensible thing and make your own parties and enslave those who have snubbed you and make them come to your parties and eat their souls, and suddenly you're on the Most Wanted list and heroes keep crashing your parties and beating up your thralls. It's just... it's just not fair, man.

See, here's the thing. Say you had an SGmate who was great to RP with and always came up with awesome plots. One day they come up with a plot involving a god or godlike figure. So in the course of trying to figure out what to do next your character goes "okay, maybe we could talk to this god and try to make a deal". And the other player goes "okay" and logs in a level 2 alt with Veteran wings and the Thunderhead aura.

Would you immediately go, "No way, I refuse to believe a god would be level 2, go PL this character to 50 and get them some Incarnate slots and then we'll talk"?

Conversely, I wouldn't RP with a character who is a perfectly normal human being who just happens to have really good informers, if this is used as a tool to intimidate me (like, say, "I know all your weaknesses, I know where you live, I know all your family members, I could ruin your life or have you killed with a single text.")

For me, it's not so much about the discrepancy between the story they're trying to sell me and their ingame stats, it's more about whether they're interested in a good story versus just posturing.

No, what worries me is that we may be inching down a slippery slope. I hope I never see the day when someone tells my Rad Corruptor something like "You didn't six-slot EMP? We're doooooomed! <kick>." It also makes me worry that I may feel compelled to level, say, my Defenders and Corruptors just for specific Task Forces.
See, here's the thing - we've already seen this specific "slippery slope" with the STF and the LRSF. *Twice*.

When they were introduced, and players found that the usual method of "go straight in and beat up everything" only worked if you had a very specific high-debuff team with a Stone Tanker. There were cries of "I don't like where this is going, if you are not a Radiation Defender/Corrupter or a Stone Tank/Brute you will only ever get the pity spot".

Eventually players adapted and found tactics to beat them both on any team, mostly involving Warburg nukes, Shivian summons and Vengeance.

So then the Master Of... series of badges made their first appearance. When it was first announced that to get them you had to beat the TFs with no temp powers (so no nukes or Shivians) and no deaths (so no Vengeance), there were cries of "I don't like where this is going, this badge is basically impossible to get on anyone who isn't a Radiation Defender/Corrupter or a Stone Tank/Brute."

But eventually players adapted and found tactics that allowed any reasonably balanced and competent team to beat either TF with the Master Of... restrictions. (The team I was on when I finally got it on my Stormie included a Stone/ tank, a Fire/ tank, a Scrapper, and a last-minute addition of a Peacebringer.)

So now that there's a new TF that people are telling me is too difficult and only specific ATs and powersets will be able to beat it, well, let's just say I'm not too worried.

Edit: For reference, here's the lineup on my team that completed Apex and Tin Mage on Saturday:
    Fire/Stone Tank
    Inv/SS Tank
    MA/SR Scrapper
    Traps/DP Defender
    Strom/Elec Defender
    Mind/FF Controller
    Ill/Rad Controller
    Warshade

The Inv/SS Tank had been on one failed Apex, and the Scrapper had been on one successful Tin Mage. The Ill/Rad is fundamentally opposed to spoilers and had gone in cold. The rest of us were moderately spoiled by Beta and guides.

I disagree on the "lately". Running an MMO is a business. We can argue the relative merits of corporate capitalism (and there is plenty there to headdesk over), but let's just agree that their #1 goal is "make as much money as possible" and "make customers feel like their purchases are worth the money spent" is only relevant as long as it contributes to #1.

I'm not saying it's a good #1 goal, I'm just asking you to consider the method behind their madness.

    Quote:
When you try to relate that to the last few Booster Packs for this game you run into the problem with whether or not people (for instance) consider 8 emotes to be "worth" $7.99 or not. I think what you'd find is that people wouldn't mind paying $7.99 for 8 emotes as long as those emotes were the best most game-changing emotes ever made. Problem is I don't think everyone thought those emotes were worth -that- much.
There are definitely people who thought the emotes weren't worth that much. We've heard from some on the forums. There are probably many people who don't think a game for their iPad is worth a whole $10.

The point is, if you earn *more* money selling 8 emotes for $8 than from selling them at $4, it doesn't matter how many people think $8 is a bad deal. It *especially* doesn't matter how many people think $8 is a bad deal *and then buy the emote pack anyway*. Given that their goal is to gain as much money as possible, it would seem pricing it at $8 may actually be a viable strategy.
  20. Here's the problem with doubling the length: sure, going from 1024 to 2048 doesn't seem like a big jump... and it's not like everyone is going to use the full thing, so you don't need to add an extra kilobyte of storage space on every character, right?

Wrong. You can't just add 1024 characters to *some* bios. You have to change the size of the "bio" field in the character database, which means the database immediately grows by a minimum of one kilobyte for every character that exists, even the ones on long-inactive accounts.

Let's take one of the historical high marks of "active subscribers" in CoH, 180k users, and assume that is everyone who has ever played the game. Next let's assume each player has created about 4 characters on average, across all servers. With these fairly lowball estimates, doubling the size of the bio field makes the existing character database jump up in size by 700MB.

    180k players * 4 characters * 1kB additional bio = 720 000 kB = 703.125 MB

Or to look at it from another angle: how much space do you need on your servers to make sure that your current players will always be able to buy more character slots? Assuming there are about 90k people who are likely to be interested in the game, adding another 1024 chars to the bio field requires reserving another 34GB (on top of whatever is currently set aside for future character creation).

    90k players * 11 servers * 36 characters * 1kB additional bio = 35 640 000 kB = 34804.68 MB = 33.98 GB

Even not accounting for the potential problems with messing around with a database (the CoH character database is an in-house format, there's no telling how easy or hard it would be to expand one of the fields), that's a lot of disk space to set aside just so a few people can express how awesome their character is a little better.

Say you set your random roll generator to level 33, and you roll in the 30-35 range. What happens if it gives you an Eradication? Eradication caps at 30. Now it could do what it does now, and give you the max level, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of "give me a recipe of exactly this level".
It would work the same as having a character with XP turned off at level 33 making the roll, except without needing to have a character locked at level 33. So in your example, it would give you the level 30 Eradication.

I'd argue both "force" and "every player".

My main Storm/Elec Defender has a team-focused build with fairly decent IO sets (even a purple Hold set in Tesla Cage). I haven't respecced her since I19, she still has Fitness as a power pool and the Rech/Heal Alpha Boost on top. I played both the new TFs and didn't feel at all inconvenienced. Situational awareness and the ability to learn new tactics on the fly were far more valuable than 5% more recharge or 8% more damage in my attacks.

There are players who enjoy playing the market for the best IOs and putting together builds that squeeze out every last % of numerical advantage. The third build is for those players, so they don't have to abandon one of their existing builds to get the maximum efficiency from the Alpha slot. For everyone else, ignoring the third build is a perfectly viable option.

  24. In the discussion threads for the last two boosters, (Dance and Origins), several people noted that they feel the packs would sell better (and presumably make more money) if they were one or two dollars cheaper. We can't tell if it's true for the Super Boosters, because we have no access to any sales data, but maybe if we looked at a similar market, we could at least get a basic idea of how price relates to gains.

This article on Gamasutra shwos the top selling (most sales) and top *grossing* (most money earned) games on the iPhone and iPad. The top-selling games are all in the $1-$3 range (no big surprise there), but half of the the top *grossing* games are $3-$4. The discrepancy is even bigger on the iPad, where only *one* of the top-grossing games is $1, and *five* are $10.

Despite this, you'll note that the top-grossing iPhone games are still $1, and they are the same two games as the top-selling ones (again, no big surprise there).

What does this tell us? Well, on the iPhone and iPad, at least, you're more likely to get a lot of money if you price your game up. The income lost from people who look at your game and go "I'd buy that for a dollar, but not for three" is less than the income gained from, well, people paying $3 for your game. You still have a chance of grossing more on a cheaper game, but it needs to be a vast, runaway success.

Extrapolating this to boosters... sure, *you* might have bought the Party Pack at $4 instead of $8. But do you really think it would have attracted *twice as many buyers* at the very *least*? Do you think pricing it at $2 would have made it a "must buy" to the entire playerbase?

Maybe the NCSoft marketing guys aren't as dumb as they look.

NOTE: Please do *not* discuss the relative merits of the actual games, as that is against forum rules. This thread is meant to discuss the idea that "lower prices mean more money earned" and the iPhone game sales are only a point of data in the discussion.
