    Got to agree with this.

What I took from it was "6-year old game. It's an MMO so some things will be samey. Pay a little attention to your character and OMG I'M ONLY LEVEL 10 AND I KICK DONKEY! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
  2. To the OP:

Known bug - hit me in Closed Beta. Three people /bugged it. Logging out and waiting 24 hours made no difference. Never did figure out if it's Hero/Villain AT or Resistance/Loyalist based (my loyalist MM could target and was targetable by a scrapper and a blaster, both Resistance).

Bug it, bug it, and bug it again. They'll figure it out eventually.

Meantime, it only seems to last for one mission - just stay out of the map for one mission, or quit the team temporarily, or whatever suits you.

    The Origin Game

Interesting. Certainly agree on the Dual Blades and Scrapper, but I'm thinking that the secondary is Dark Armour or Invuln.

So my guess: DB/DA Scrapper, Magic Origin.

Re: netgraph, last night, Union server (information verified by a number of players on different ISPs).

Mostly the "green, green grass of home", with a green or yellow spike approximately every 8 seconds. Ping would cycle as follows: start at 2000, drop steadily to around 900 over a 4-6 second period, then freeze for 3-5 seconds, bouncing back to 2000. This is while standing still around a number of other stationary players, no powers on, in Studio 55, Imperial City.

[Edit: I will point out that it wasn't only the people in S55 who were suffering this - there was a big discussion going on in Broadcast about other zones, too. Further, I recommended that people /bug it so that it could be brought to the attention of those able to do something about it, since a few people seemed to believe that the GMs, Community team and the Devs should somehow magically know about the play experience going on.

Also, at around 11.00 UK time, it reverted to "normal" levels - ping slightly higher than I'm used to seeing (about 50 ns up), and everyone shut up about it.]

    Should, perhaps.

    Does not, actually.

EU codes can only be used on EU accounts, US codes can only be used on US accounts.

However, it is worth noting that EVERY EU item page on the NC Store seems to have a link that says "US version also available". That link should take you to the US version for purchase.

  7. In the words of the wise one (that's me, on and off - see sig): Play what you want to play, rationalise what you have to rationalise.

It would be ridiculous of me, for example, to claim that one of my toons (the rarely played Maera) is a Kheldian, despite the fact that she has the Peacebringer AT. I just took that so that she could fly from L1 and I wouldn't have to level her up to 14. Roll on my 60 month vet reward, then I'll remake her properly and take fly at L6.

Really, the shared story that is RP in CoH requires give and take from everyone. You don't have to fix yourself within the confines of the game and its mechanics (if you did, strictly speaking no character would be more than 6 years old, for example), but neither should you assume that your character knows things about other characters without some obvious sign (i.e. you read the Bio) or actual RP'd interaction.

Which brings us onto a whole realm of other stuff called "flange" - stuff that the game doesn't represent, but that you might choose your character to have as an ability. Many characters have flange-senses, flange-powers, flange-body-parts. While it would be pointless to assume that everyone reads your character's bio to learn these things, it can be a good habit to get into if your character has them - that way you can direct questions OOC to the player, if needed.

As far as the "Jill and Ernest" thing is concerned... the limitations of animation within the game (which are specifically set the way they are, with the character box the size it is, for good reason) mean that as roleplayers we sometimes have to apply liberal amounts of fudge. According to the strict letter of the game-mechanics, no two characters can have any physical contact, unless you use some emote trickery. Far easier for consenting persons to just say "Richard hugs so-and-so" and have it accepted by everyone that something which does not appear on-screen has happened. The one rule I would suggest that everyone try to follow is that "adult" situations should be either a) dealt with off-screen, or b) dealt with in private, whether through /tells, finding a remote location that no other players are likely to go to, hiding away inside a supergroup base, whatever, but such things should NOT be described on a public channel in a place where people who are not involved are likely to accidentally stumble across it. If, for example, I found a couple of people RPing something adult on Local chat in a yellow-line station, Wentworths, Pocket D, City Hall or somewhere equally frequented, I'd be sending petitions. If, on the other hand, they were in a quiet corner of Eden, well away from any badge locations, I'd just quietly turn around and leave them in peace.
  8. Here's the video driver file location direct from your notebook's manufacturer (which is the usual method if the generic Windows ones don't work): Hope this helps

Also you might want to find the sound drivers from the same site, just to be completely up to date on everything.
  9. We'll need system specs, and one of the helpful techie types will undoubtedly linky you to CoHhelper and HijackThis, which will provide us with enough information about your system to try and nail down your problem (or check through a few posts on this here part of the forum, and you'll probably find those links).
  10. Yup, untargeted dead ally was my first guess, too.

Try: /bind r "powexecname resurrect$$target_custom_next defeated" and mash it a few times near a dead ally.

(does targetcustomnext allow multiple parameters? if so, change it to 'friend defeated')

Also, what error message comes up when you hit the bind? What does the combat log say, if anything?
  11. Suppose I have a character named "Supershad" on Freedom, and I want to rename him. Every now and then (like just after I18 launches) we get a period of free character transfers.

So, to rename him to "Shad Superior" (for free), I transfer him to Pinnacle (say), and then create a placeholder toon on Freedom called "Supershad". I then transfer the Pinnacle "Supershad" back to Freedom. Oh, no! Name in use! Free rename granted. "Shad Superior" is now born on Freedom.
  12. No real point to this post other than to change the thread title so it doesn't look like we're still waving goodbye to Mumsy.
  13. Welcome back, Mumsy!

We missed you, but our aim is improving.

    See you around Paragon.
  14. Well, firstly, Paragonwiki is your friend. I'd recommend doing a search for Issues... I think you need, oh, 13-17 to get you utterly up to date.

As far as we know, existing players can create Heroes, Villains and Praetorians as new characters, but people who have ONLY purchased Going Rogue (no other editions of the game), there is a note somewhere that they will have to start new characters in Praetoria. Since you clearly already have an account, you will not be forced to start new characters there if you don't want to.

Also: No, powersets and AT's have not been removed. The trick is that in Praetoria you can start with ANY Archetype, and when you've finished it (at L20), you can pick hero or villain. So you can create a Mastermind in Praetoria who then goes on to become a Hero in Paragon City, but you are still limited to the Mastermind powersets.

    So...the Website

Seems so. And is blocked by my office network, unlike the good old boards.cityofheroes.com
  16. As Novella says.

My understanding is that you will still be able to get "Tips" from foes L20+ in Paragon and the Rogue Isles, but unless you purchase Going Rogue you will NOT be able to change alignment.
  17. I'm pretty sure their reactions to the realms of the weird would still devolve to their basic nature, though.

Certainly not going to argue that you have their personalities pretty much down pat.

I guess it really depends on what you're going to be putting them through, and how far outside their comfort-zones it takes them. I'm sure as heck going to keep reading.

Oh, and a big yes from me on the t-shirt idea.

Ah, the perrenial "someone else's character" problem. Particularly tricky when used in the same setting as that character originated (well, to us, at least).

There are, I think, three ways to approach this issue, but you need to remember one thing - the "core" idea of the character (more on that later).

    1) Do what comic writers do: Make the character fit your perception of them. Less satisfying than the other options, but it allows you to write whatever you want. If you want Positron to be serious and gritty, make him serious and gritty. If you need him to be lighthearted and jokey, make him lighthearted and jokey.

    2) Write only from the perspective of the "core idea" - use it, abuse it, overuse it, then use it again. Synapse will always be up for a laugh, looking for the main chance, and his actions will reflect that.

    3) Read, reread, read again everything that there is about the characters in canon material (so, character bio's, The Freedom Phalanx novel, the comics, the TF's, everything they ever say to anyone) and squeeze your writing to fit.

Odds are you will find some middle ground among the three (number 2 is probably the most satisfying from a creativity perspective), but no matter what you do, remember the "core idea" of each of the characters (and, if the opportunity presents itself, take a look at their Praetorian counterparts - you can probably learn a lot from those).

Here's my take on the main signature characters:

Statesman: Responsibility, duty, honour. Statesman represents ideals. The sort of hero that everyone looks up to, but because of his rigid adherence to those ideals, some other heroes may find him... grating.

Manticore: Dedication, ruthlessness, pragmatism. Manticore represents someone who is willing to do what is necessary to get the job done. And he doesn't always do what's 'right' to make it happen. He is by no means a bad man, since he has the best interests of others at heart, but he will not shirk from pretty much any action short of killing someone to achieve his goals.

Sister Psyche: Wisdom, knowledge, passion. Possibly the most complex of the Freedom Pahalanx, Sister Psyche is equal parts verve for life and mature wisdom. Her insights into the minds of others allows her to see what perspective they're coming from, and she is utterly dedicated to making the lives of others better.

Synapse: Fun, zest, pleasure. Synapse represents the desire of everyone to just flat out have fun. He is able and willing to apply boundless energy to this goal, yet is tempered by a deep understanding that he has a duty to allow others the have fun too - and to allow others the opportunity to have fun.

Citadel: Reasoning, logic, understanding. Citadel is a fascinating character. Utterly ruled by logic and reasoning, he is also one of the most human of the Phalanx, because he actually puts effort into understanding all of the things that drive others. He is the most likely to find beauty in anything, because he tries to, and he is utterly implacable when he a goal.

Positron: Intelligence, focus, precision. Positron is all about clarity, analysis and excellence. He is uncomfortable dealing with things outside his areas of expertise, which fortunately cover pretty much every aspect of scientific endeavour. Think of Leonard from The Big Bang Theory. That's Positron, except smarter than Sheldon and while he's undoubtedly still as geeky, it is tempered by an idealism that heroism is simply 'right'. Fortunately for him, Positron isn't socially inept, it's just that most of his effort is directed elsewhere.

I could probably go on and on, but at the end of the day that should be enough to get my point across.

Even if the "owners" of those characters have never considered them in terms of personality (highly unlikely, but stranger things have happened) those are the things that I would try to bear in mind when writing them. It will probably slow down your pace of writing, but if, every time you think about how, say, Synapse would act in a given situation, if you can answer the question "how would he (Steve Berry, Accountant, Speedster, flirt, good guy, thinks he's witty) have the most fun at a time like this?", you will probably be pretty close to the mark.

The other thing to remember is that no character should ever be a bland two-dimensional figure (okay, I know I'm trying to teach Granny to suck eggs, here, but it's important, and other writers might get something out of this), unless all they're there for is to get hit once in the face and be sent to the Zig. They're not heroes because they decided to put on spandex and fight crime; they're not heroes because of the odds they face. They're heroes because they put themselves on the line, never give up, fight for others and believe in the "job". They all have flaws, they all have good points, but at the end of the day they all ultimately want the same thing. Their methods may not agree (think of Statesman and Manticore's perpetual disagreements in the comics), but they know that they all want the same thing, and that together they're stronger than they are alone.

    Addon software?

I will point out, though, that you are unlikely to get a redname response on this at all. The reason being that they do not wish to set a precedent for "allowed/not-allowed" with their comments.

I'd suggest taking a look at the Vidiotmaps site - there's an FAQ around there somewhere that explains why they believe that the use of the map pack is legitimate, but at the end of the day, it's pretty much what I described above: Modifying the game files themselves? Breaks EULA. Adding a file that layers over the game files and that only affects your game experience? Allowed.

    Addon software?

I have seen people refer to various hackery which modifies CoH. The ones I've seen include:

    * A program which runs alongside CoH and records statistics about your gameplay.
    * Some data file upgrades which add additional information to the minimap displays for the city.
    * Texture/model mods, such as an "all-nude" model mod.

My basic question: Are ANY of these legit, or permitted by ToS? I'm coming from a background in a game where all three of these would be not only bannable offenses, but bannable defenses that the game software would actively seek out and detect. On the other hand, in that game, there was an actively-maintained API for user-created user interface modifications in game.

From what I've seen of CoH, my guess would be that all of these are allowed, but not necessarily supported or encouraged. I say this because I don't see anyone complaining about references to them, and I see a lot of people recommending them without much hassle. But I'm not sure.

And honestly, I can live without the all-nude mod, because given peoples' taste in costumes, I can't see that ending well.

But the stat-tracking thing sounds really fun to me (I might be a TINY bit obsessive about data collection), and the map addon similarly sounds fun.

I've avoided referring to these by name because it may be that they're considered exploits or hacks; if they're not, I'd be happy to provide actual names that people could look up. And similarly, if stuff like this is allowed, I'd love to know what else is out there.
As far as anyone is aware, any of these are legitimate, with the possible exception of the "nude" mod.

Reason: They do not modify the game files in any way. They either read information that the game records using the chat interface (HeroStats for tracking game stats) or add file that replaces the minimap (Vidiotmaps map pack), or changes what is displayed on your screen ONLY (Power icon mods; the most likely means of achieving a "nude" costume).

There is a Data folder in the game directory (or you can create one), and you can put things in it, and if it's got the right filename the game will read it instead of the file in the .pigg files.

Importantly, the "nude" character mod will work the same way, and if someone has found a way to hack the game such that their modification displays to other players, then they have hacked the .pigg files, which is DEFINITELY against the EULA.

    Quote:
In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
The one suffered by the other person. Other than that slightly sarcastic answer, he doesn't think there's any such thing as a "good" death - every death should be regreted by those who know the deceased, whether friends or foes.

    Quote:
What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
Favourite food: Pretty much anything Chinese, though he has a secret passion for REAL British chips. Drink-wise, he loves Scotch Whisky. As for food and drink he doesn't like, he's not overly fond of seafood, and doesn't like what Champagne does to him, so he tends to avoid it.

    Quote:
Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
His bedroom is in his home. It's a fairly large room, with a West-facing window, a dresser and chair below the window. Door is in the North-East corner of the room, with the king-sized bed dominating the East wall. On the South wall is his walk-in wardrobe and the door to the en-suite bathroom (shower, large bath, washbasin and toilet, with its own airing-cupboard). The room is decorated in simple colours, and the bedlinen is typically deep red or deep blue. There is a large picture on the wall above the bed - an artist's impression of a supernova. On his side of the bed is a small dressing table with a picture of himself, his mother, his (deceased) father and his sister on his graduation day.

    Quote:
How would your character's father describe him or her?
Well, his father is dead, but if he were alive, he'd say "I'm proud of my son. He has his flaws, but he always tries to do what's right. I might not agree with all of his choices, but he's not the little boy I taught to ride a bike any more - he makes those choices, rather than foisting them off on others, and that makes him a man I can be proud of."

    Quote:
Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
Oh, definitely. Lady Westlake, Baroness Andrea Huntington, would describe her son something like this: "He's my baby, and I love him, but for a man who's allegedly a genius, he's often thick as two short planks. No common sense at all. Just once it would be nice for him to drop by and visit just for the sake of it, but he really doesn't understand how much I miss him, all the way over the Atlantic."

    Quote:
If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint. (Do NOT think of what you don't like about limitations on pwoersets...think personality)
He's arrogant, opinionated, stubborn as all hell and has a tendency to jump from utterly calm to psychotically infuriated at the drop of a hat. He can seem to be hypocritical in some respects, but that's usually because he's failed to put himself in other peoples shoes until a situation forces him to reevaluate his position.

Simple thing for me to say: Don't quit the forums over this. If you really feel bad about how you've treated someone on these forums, man up and admit it (you've done that) and send them a PM telling them you're sorry.

There's no need to explain reasons that you feel you were rude, or dredge up past history. If you think someone deserves an apology, give it to them, make it honest, and leave the ball in their court. Only a complete moron would refuse an honest apology.

    The CoX effect

    Welcome home!

While I might deplore your decision to bypass the EU servers (I'm not saying they're dead, but they could do with a bit of help to feel a little less empty), I certainly can't argue with your choice to pick up this game again!
