Getting "In Touch" with your Character
Back in my Pen and Paper days of roleplaying, one of the games I played was a diceless RPG. That's right... diceless... as in pure roleplaying. Anyway, one of the things the game recommended, was to ask yourself some questions about your character that have no impact on stats, but on the character's individual personality.
Though I have long ago retired my Pen and Paper games, and the original list is long gone, I thought it may be useful for me to put together my own list here for CoX roleplayers. The purpose is not so much for people to respond with their answers for all to read (though, feel free to do so). It is more for them to get themselves to answer the questions for themselves and to think of the character from a roleplaying point of view--as an individual rather than as an extension of the player.
Have fun with it, and, as I said, feel free to expand on the list. |
2. Defending those he loves the most
3. Does not eat , has no stomach
4. SG base , filled with momentos from his planet
5. No longer around , family/ planet destroyed
6. See above
7. Dislike - has superhuman powers but at times is reluctant to use it to help others . He means well and wants things to work out themselves but it comes at a cost . Innocent people can be hurt or are needlessly put in harms way ( think of the watchers from Fringe , if you watch that show ) but the heroes of Paragon are helping him to see a different path .
For the Urban Fellow of Merry Wit...
1. Usually in the public laundry room of the Taiga Institution.
2. "Dying as myself."
3. Loves SUGAR. Hates any form of vegetative matter.
4. Messy, cluttered with party favors and comic books, not to mention a few errant pieces of clothing. Lives in a dorm room, for lack of a better term. No roommate.
5. As "Meta-human scum." He's Malta.
6. Not particularly...
7. He's very spastic, which isn't necessarily a *bad* thing...But he's so naive, innocent and energetic that he wouldn't have trouble monkey dancing on top of a coffin. Being only eight years old, his sense of empathy is still developing along with his social conscience. He thinks of everything in the world in relation to himself still. So basically, I'd hate that he's a stupid kid.

1: She does her day to day laundry in her apartment building's laundrymat, although her costumes tend to get sent out to Icon's cleaners-dang that impervium weave...
2: Oddly enough, it's not all lace (although there is some) and mirrored ceilings-despite her infamous 'party girl' reputation...It's more like an combination office/study-she keeps a computer there for research. Her walk in closet is packed with clothing and organized by seasons and occasions.
The bed is a nice little queensize- with a bookshelf in the back for her music. What everyone notices the most are her stuffed toys all over the bed-She has never quite grown up, and collects everything- bears dressed as various heroes to stuffed anime critters-although her most loved stuffed toy was one that she was given as a little child. Not many people get this far into her apartment, by the way-
3: To her, there is no such thing as the perfect death- but her death better be for a good cause, and not an empty death, for no reason.
4: For a long time, her drink of choice was Sake. However, this has changed. She now prefers chocolate milk. Yes, something she cannot order in the D without getting a few raised eyebrows. She's got no real favorite food, as her metabolism requires that she eat like a football player at her meals. Because of this, she doesn't have to eat like a pigeon to watch her figure. No dislikes food wise.
5. Since she has about 20 some odd 'parents' (she was originally created to be a 'lab rat' in a Crey experiment)- it's hard to say. Her foster family loves her, but wish she'd settle down and get married like her adopted sister did.!
6: She's arrogant at times, and brusque. I know she does that for a reason, but I really really wish she'd let her soft side loose more often..

Hmm... alrighty, I'll run with Danny "Target Lad" Troy, since my main RP character, Energon X, is, well, pretty much me with superpowers and some different life experiences. So no real challenge getting into his shoes
1. Danny doesn't do all his own laundry, although given that he's thirteen, his mum has decided that it's time for him to learn. When he's doing his own, it's at the laundry room in the boy's dorm at Golden Eagle High.
2. "Somebody else's."
3. A really good, meaty lasagna would probably top his list of favourite 'real' foods. Anything with enough sugar and colouring would probably edge out the rest for junk food. As far as 'can't stand it'... he was exposed to Hollandse Nieuwe herring on a family trip, and now has trouble eating any fish at all.
4. Danny's half of his dorm room is tidy, if you look at it at the right angle. He's got his heavily-insulated laptop on the desk, and his clothes stacked in roughly-organized piles under the bed, which, while rarely actually made, is usually at least rumpled in a fashion that roughly approximates being made. Other than that, he keeps most of his stuff in his bedroom at home in Steel Canyon, which looks like a hurricane hit, and is absolutely loaded with toys that he has pretty much outgrown, but can't quite bear to turn over to the mercies of his younger brothers quite yet.
5. Well, the description of Danny that his Da has posted over his desk says "Pre-Teen Hero Bursts on to the Scene!" as the headline, with "Target Lad, Paragon City's newest hero, saves 12 from out-of-control building fire, arrests 15 Hellions" as the secondary heading on a clipping from last year. Danny's Da is a reporter, natch If asked in person, he'd tell you "He's a good kid, just kind of intense. Er... don't ask him about the Outcasts."
6. Yup- his mum is actually a clinically-trained psychologist, so... well, not being one myself, I can't even really approximate it, but it would probably boil down to much the same as what his dad said, along with reasons why Danny's that way.
7. If I was to meet Danny? Oog. He's thirteen. Headstrong, insecure, kind of socially inept, and rather full of himself. He's also wound a bit too tight >.>

I have a zillion alts so I'll just pick one at random and see where that takes me. Most of my alts are robots or weird aliens so a lot of these "fleshing out" questions wouldn't really work too well. I'll start with a character I just started recently, The Hood Ornament. He calls himself that because when he wears his shiny armor, he sort of looks like car's hood ornament.
Up until the moment he found the magical armor that ruined his life, Kyle Tyler used to share rent with a couple of friends in a grubby brownstone in Skyway. The building doesn't have a laundry room so he has to take his wash to a coin-op just down on the corner.
But now he's on the run from a lot of people who want to kill him and hasn't figured out where to live yet. (I haven't figured that part of his story out yet.)

What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
|
He hates soft drinks, the carbonation hurts his nose when burping. If he can afford it, he'll do tea or chai but his limited budget prevents from going completely nuts with this.
Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
|
Now that he's on the run, he's deathly afraid of returning to his apartment for fear of endangering his friends and roomies or revealing to his enemies who he really is.
Kyle's mother and father have always been just a little bit disappointed with Kyle. In school, his report cards, filled with barely passing or failing grades, always read, "Achievement seems to be below ability." Teachers would often inform his parents that he was actually quite intelligent, just completely unmotivated and unfocused.
His dad in particular feels rather guilty about Kyle. Being poor, he couldn't afford to get the kind of education and tutors he felt Kyle needed growing up. His mother is rather angry that Kyle didn't go to apply at a community college like he promised a few years ago in high school.
His dad is angry about this too but not as much. His father noticed that Kyle went straight to work after high school and has avoided asking for money--well, not much money. Kyle's dad respects that.
At the moment, both of his parents have no idea what happened to him after night he found the armor. As far as they know, he simply disappeared. To say they are worried sick is to put it mildly.

I'd probably envy that fact that has both of his parents though.

[1]Where does your character get his or her laundry done?
At the laundry room of the Whitemoore apartments
[2]In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
He's already dead being a Zombie. However he thinks about death a lot more in the way of finally ending his cursed fate. At this point he's thinking that perhaps if he jumped into lava he might die for good.
He became a Hero because he figured a Villain would insane enough to find a way to take him out for good. Yup being a hero to be destroyed how that for motive!
[3]What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
He craves meat raw meat the most. He would eat almost anything the bolder the flavor the better. Taste buds suck when they are dead.
[4]Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
His apartment would have a few Pizza boxes on the counter a beat up lazy-boy recliner a high def TV with remote. Fridge stocked with mostly junk food and beer. (Note he don't get drunk).
[5]How would your character's father describe him or her?
He wouldn't know he was an Orphan, he has no idea if his family died by natural cause or was Murdered. Growing up on the Rogue Isles that tends to happen. However his drill instructor and the Orphanage care taker thought he was Lazy and wouldn't make it in the world.
[6]Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
See number 5
[7]If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint. (Do NOT think of what you don't like about limitations on pwoersets...think personality)
Hmm I have to say thought he seems to be a I don't care about anything personality he in truth depressed. Face it being a Zombie must be hard on a person. Sadly this makes RPing him hard to because his nature is to avoid social interaction.
Inspired by Rotten's write up, this one's based on one of my favorite alts, Quark Zombie.

And it has caused a lot of death--perhaps even death on a cosmic scale.

It is completely unknown if the Evrettian Sidestepper has parents or reproduces in any manner similar to human beings. The corpse it currently steers around was of a former high energy physicists, Amanda Wilkerson. Amanda was the first person to have contact with the sidestepper in a series of events that cost her life.
You mean aside from Quark Zombie being a Lovecraftian monster bent on the casual destruction of the entire planet? Not much, I guess.

Using this only for my first main Countess Erzsebet Bathory (ingame Bathory Erzsebet)...
[*]Where does your character get his or her laundry done?
The servants at Castle Bathory, the base under the mansion in Cap Au Diable University district, do her laundry. Parts of the dungeons are set up for this functionality. Most of the servants are either vampire wanna-be's, forced slaves or zombies/undead constructs.
[*]In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
She is already dead being a vampire. But her death or final distruction should be with a bang. Meaning she would ant the event to be remembered. And she isn't above taking a good amound of people with her if she has to be destroyed.
[*]What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
While alive, about 400+ years ago, Elizabeth was find of veal and wine. Also italian food was favorite. But these days normal food cannot be digested in her undead digestion system. It will take a long long time to do so and often gives her cramps. She lives on blood as a vampire should.
[*]Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
Her personal bedroom is in the 1st level of her base. It is a large double bed in a seperate room layered with oak and right next to her wooden eleborated carved coffin filled with some of her native country's soil.
[*]How would your character's father describe him or her?
A woman with a fighting spirit and a solid will that knows how to handle her servants.
[*]Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
A strong girl/woman that knows how to steer the household. Loyal to her family and a good mother.
[*]If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint. (Do NOT think of what you don't like about limitations on pwoersets...think personality)
I will not like her 'air'... she feels very highly about herself and is used to order others around. Ofcourse she is very fond on inflicting pain and suffering. Something that is not really a hobby of me :S
- The Italian Job: The Godfather Returns #1151
Beginner - Encounter a renewed age for the Mook and the Family when Emile Marcone escapes from the Zig!
- Along Came a... Bug!? #528482
Average - A new race of aliens arrives on Earth. And Vanguard has you investigate them!
- The Court of the Blood Countess: The Rise of the Blood Countess #3805
Advanced - Go back in time and witness the birth of a vampire. Follow her to key moments in her life in order to stop her! A story of intrigue, drama and horror! Blood & Violence... not recommend to solo!
Rushmore - Jamie Mathews
Where does your character get his or her laundry done?
- In the Unity Vigil's Laundry Room. Or when he's at home, he does it in the washer there.
In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
- As Rushmore, giving his life to defend his country from some great threat.
- As Jamie, on a homestead when elderly, with his wife, children and grandchildren about. Live the American dream, die to it too.
What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
- Jamie loves BBQ food. Back home in South Dakota, got a big old fire pit and BBQ, and on national holidays he goes home with his girlfriend to see the family, the extended family and help out on the grill. He dislikes sashimi as he's not a fan of raw fish, and loathes butternut squashes after a mutant one tried to take over his hometown.
Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
- Jamie lives in Unity Tower, in a Two Bed, Two Bathroom, 1 Living Area apartment with his girlfriend Joanna. They have separate rooms, but share beds. The separate rooms are to give them a place to retire, to keep their things and to provide a little piece of themselves to a room when the rest is mostly shared décor. His room contains pictures from back home, hometown memorabilia, a Rushmore Unity Vigil produced action figure, his wood working tools and a collection of books on various home-craftsmanship subjects, as well as some history and military stuff. He also keeps souvenirs of Americana.
How would your character's father describe him or her?
- Jamie's father, Ralph, is very proud of his soon. He'd describe him as being a very proud American, dedicated to living by the tenants of the forefathers, and also quite brave. He's glad his son possesses a good sense of humour, and is very comfortable with himself.
Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
- Not at all. Lucy's supportive of Jamie and in his hero capacities as Rushmore, and she's always eager to see him and his girlfriend.
If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint.
- I think after a while, Jamie's patriotism and firm sense of American Exceptionalism might get a little grating, but I don't think there's too much to take umbrage with.
Otrera AKA Cassandra Zero, for ever in her Heart just Cassandra.
* Where does your character get his or her laundry done?
In her Founders Falls apartment, it has a laundry Room.
* In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
Death is failure.
* What is your character's favourite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
She loves Italian food and wine, loathes the canteen style food she used to get at school.
* Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your super group's base or somewhere else?
Again it is in Founders Falls, Neat to the point of being severe, too long in the army, with a large attached bathroom, which is her favourite place in the flat.
* How would your character's father describe him or her?
He wouldn't, she doesn't know him, may be dead for all she knows.
* Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
No, she died from complications to do with the pregnancy.
* If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint. (Do NOT think of what you don't like about limitations on power sets...think personality)
She has the same wide arrogant streak i have, and you never get on with people you see your own flaws in.
Okay, here goes on my main, Shadowe (aka Dr Richard Huntington the Third).
