Quote:I've been falling pretty deeply for gw2 lately but then this week the halloween event started. Trick or treating, costumes which unlock pvp in non-pvp zones, crafting cool rare stuff from holiday loot, lore revealed in a new scavenger hunt event, the main city hub getting a hogwarts makeover, pumpkin carving, and more stuff I havent even tried yet. And this is the first act of four culminating on the 31st.
I hope you guys check this game out, it really is genuinely a great game(although much harder than CoX). If you do my global handle is Solo.9027 and I'm on Blackgate, but right now server transfers are free so it doesnt matter where you go.
I understand the anti-NCsoft sentiment around here but I felt like I had to relate how much fun this game is. I try to look at it as an Arenanet game more than an NCsoft game. If you buy it once there is no further money you'd need to give them to enjoy everything in the game so you can minimize any sort of guilt you might feel betraying paragon studios or whatever.
Also, I have not heard of any of the other recent games doing holiday events. Does TSW or CO(or any other game people are transferring to) have anything like this happen?
It's hardly surprising they've pushed the boat out on this one for a number of reasons:
- It's GW2's first ever holiday event since launch. To not have something special would have sent the wrong message
- It's their first event after the announced closure of CoH. Again, not doing something good would have been seen as strange
- CoH: No devs. There wasn't anything they could have done. It's likely that we'd have got something interesting had things been different, but with I24 just landed probably not quite as cool. But there's a lot of legacy stuff so it all adds up to content
- It's hardly surprising then that GW2 is having a bigger, bolder event. It's NCSoft's one working product in the west now. They have to make it work or they may as well abandon the western market completely.
- No, they ain't having any more of my money. End of!

Quote:You, my friend, did the impossible. You made the goofy-as-all-hell Statesman costume look cool and badass. I didn't think it was possible, but I'm impressed with the result.
You make a good point Mr Tow. That's an ace tat - it's the darkness that Marcus Cole never showed in game - his goatee-stroking alter-egos did that enough and I'm running out-of-hyphens too.
Mr Tow, the only way you can better this is by showing us your full body arachnos tattoo that you've kept secret for all this time. -
this has been speculated for a long time. It's not exactly new news

Many people will be keeping quiet until they are certain there is nothing to be salvaged from this game.
I'm pretty sure that once it is closed and NCSoft withdraws into the east, people will have a few things to say. -
I've just had a pretty nasty experience on TSW - so I post this as a potential warning. YYMV so I'm not damning the game outright but be aware.
I have struggled to get teams at low levels because try as I might I can't get the CoH channels to work and most "Cabals" (SGs to us) are already high level and doing NM (nightmare mode) stuff it seems.
So I post in the forums to say I'm struggling and unlikely to continue to play because I'm tired of dying. Apparently they have a rule against that (which to me seems to be a very overly strict interpretation about posting account closure details.) I also get "Three Infraction Points" against my account.
Quite what they are is open to interpretation but it's not good and I've clearly been censured for saying, very politely, that I struggle with the game and the culture. So be prepared to get modslapped on there. I've said and done much worse on here and not even got a reprimand and the only time I got into a fight with a mod on this forum was during last summer's riots where I got to tell a Mod "**** you and the horse you rode in on" and an appology from her. (We're cool now by the way)
But also something to consider: TSW went live in July and already people are running out of stuff to do. It might not have the legs we think even though it looks gorgeous. -
My time in CoH isn't a pissing contest.
I've spent many many hours in this game because it wasn't just fun, it was therapy for me. Gave me a refuge when the rest of the world was a nasty, dark, scary place.
I've deleted more 50s than I can count and I've put a lot of my soul into the game.
In my head many of my characters will live on, regardless of what the future holds - and just maybe they'll live again. But while it was here it did me good. -
NCSoft isn't interested in selling. The IP is not for sale. They made that very clear with their "exhausted every opportunity" post.

I'm really enjoying my time in TSW
I enjoy the power wheels and most of the game play. There are some bugs but mostly minor.
But I've also enjoyed the community. There are some very helpful and friendly people there and in that sense it's just like home from home. Good Cabals (SGs) with willing helpers who will come join to help, advise, and just play.
Also a good RP community though I've not done a huge amount.
As for content, there seems to be a surprisingly high amount for such a new game, especially when you take the repeatable temp missions into account.
What I'm loving most about it is the story. This is a hightly story driven game and it meshes together very well, great atmosphere and environments. I can see it wouldn't be for everyone but it's certainly a worthy next game for me. -

For many of us, CO isn't going to work because we still love CoH and no other game is CoH - not will it ever be.
That's a bit "obvious statement is obvious" (obviously) but it's something I think we're forgetting a lot of the time. The reason CoH remained right up there with CO and DCUO in the field is because it did Superhero MMO very very well. And not much is going to come close to that.
I've had a couple of goes at CO. It's ok. It's pretty good, taken in isolation - it does some things better than CoH, IMO. Travel powers for example - but then the jet packs and rocket boards and beast travel powers really took care of that from CoH's POV. But in terms of game play and teaming it is [expletive deleted]
That's only my opinion and maybe I will revisit it some time in the future but for now I'm playing other games.
But if I have any advice it's simply this: Don't hate CO because it's not CoH. Hate it because it's not very good. -
Quote:The test server was "repurposed." Zwillinger made that quite clear.Missed portents?
1) About a year ago, the Test Server was wiped. Not in itself evil; we always knew that the devs reserved the right to wipe or even shut down the test server at any time. But after six years of unofficial support for the tester community, all characters were wiped. No warning nor explanation was given. Everyone, including many advanced native characters were just gone one day. Note that the test server had been overwritten before; the devs would announce that a backup would be made, a copy of Freedom (?) would replace it, and when the testing was over, the actual test characters would be restored. Not this time.
It has always been a condition of the test server that players may be wiped and it is not a server to play the main game on. There have not always been backups made - and let's not forget with the list merge they suddenly found themselves with not one, but two test servers. One from the NA shards and one from the EU.
To maintain both of those would have been a waste of resources so however you cut it, wiping one test server is not a portent of doom. -
Brilliant stuff but just makes me sadder

Quote:Why would they decline any offer?
An offer of $50 is $50 more than the IP/game is going to make them just sitting there.
The fact is, they probably weren't seriously entertaining any offers.
Why would they sell the game/IP to someone else when that would just create competition and potentially take money and customers away from other NCSoft games?
The press release that they "exhausted all possibilities" is just lip service. They never intended to take any reasonable offer and they probably demanded something ridiculous knowing nobody would agree to it.
And really, with all the games they've shut down, has NC ever sold the IP? I guess nobody ever offers them what NCSoft thinks is fair. Poor NCSoft! They try so hard too.
Seriously, with everything that's happened, the rumor could very well be true. I wouldn't rule it out at this point.
.
There was once a TV studio. Made a TV series. It's genesis was some pseudo-hippie type with an idea about a pioneers in outer space. It ran for three seasons and then got cancelled. It was doing ok, nothing spectacular but the scheduling slot was more value than the series was bringing in.
So it died a death. The fans were really sad. They'd loved it and were loyal and the show got constant reruns across all networks and gathered new fans but never quite enough to make serious money.
Then a few years later there was a big Sci-Fi movie came out. Proved to be a huge blockbuster. And the studio that made the TV series thought "We need to cash in on this wave of sci-fi stuff that's coming out. Let's commission a new movie." But one bright exec put his hand up and said "We got one. It's got a track record. It's popular. It's got fans. It just never made quite enough money but we could take that IP and make a movie."
So they did. It was a success. So much so the movie spawned a sequel. And another. And another. And the studio realised it had a blockbuster on its hands. So they created a new, updated TV series. That proved to be even more popular than the three season original and ran for many many more seasons. And there were other TV series spin offs. At least 3 other series. And more movies. They even made a cross over movie featuring the cast of the original series and the new updated series. (It was a dogpile but still made $$$)
It's called Star Trek. You may have heard of it. And it's why you never ever sell an IP you own. -
Quote:For those that are having trouble understanding how to set up the auto-chat setup, here is an image of what it should look like at the end:
This looks really useful but... I can't seem able to use it properly. It doesn't actually do much so far as I can tell. I'm guessing I've done something wrong but... /em headscratch -
Quote:That fits with the "refocusing" blurb on the original announcement. Buy a chunk of NCSoft and get them to turn their resources to mobile and social P2P games and axe anything that doesn't fit with that.Just tossing out there that Nexon also just bought Gloops, a major mobile gaming platform.
They're out to be the number one gaming company out there. I can definitely see them pulling the trigger on a little studio like Paragon if it doesn't fit in their cash shop P2W MMO and mobile gaming dreams. -
Quote:That's quite possible. Not sure how long it's been in the works though. Seems odd they'd just shoot it dead and close a successful game to boot.
All I see is a 180 policy shift on their part. A smoking gun lies at Nexon's feet not NCSoft if you ask me.
Again, that doesn't make sense.
We know some of the top Devs on CoH were drafted into this new game reasonably recently. Therefore it's not an unreasonably wild guess to suggest it was finally CoH2
We'd seen Freedom show signs of turning the game around and it was becoming more popular - and probably a lot more profitable. Certainly from my own experience I remained subscribed and usually bought £10 worth of points every month. Previously I'd paid for my sub and gotten a booster pack when they came out (except the dance/sport emote rip-off) so clearly my own spend went up and I'd notice Defiant, which is always a relatively low pop server spring to life with Freedom.
This all points to NCSoft being very happy with the overall state of the game and signing off on CoH2 as a modern successor. For all we love CoH it does look dated compared to more modern games and probably had a limited shelf-life if we're ultimately honestly pragmatic about it.
NCSoft made the call to invest in a new game from Paragon and then soon(ish) after kills one of it's improving games and the potential new world beater? CoH2 could put both other Superhero games in the shade quite easily and become a standout game.
Still doesn't make sense. -
I'm still thinking Nexxon had more to do with this decision than we are giving them credit for. They might be getting off the hook lightly - but I cannot say for certain.
However the fact their massive share acquisition and CoH's closing happen so quickly makes one raise an eyebrow or three.
It also flies in the face of NCSoft's historically good stewardship of City of Heroes. CoH's been in the doldrums more than once and NCSoft has always been the one to keep it afloat and since they took over from Cryptic they've invested a LOT into it, Going Rogue, End Game, Freedom...
So to see it get canned like this still doesn't add up to me. There's missing parts of a jigsaw and I'm struggling to believe NCSoft would just draw a line under a profitable game that they had recently committed so much to. -
Quote:I'm skeptical as to what "exhausted" means in this context. If they were actually attempting to sell the IP or the studio for a significant amount of time, that would be interesting considering no rumor of such activity emerged and the studio itself was unaware. It would imply they were pretending to grant full support to Paragon for new development while they knew such support was false and guaranteed to be unsustainable.
The alternative is "exhausted" means they thought about all the options and decided not to actually engage any of them.
Oh, I'm sure they dreamed up an unrealistically high number, wrote it down on the back of a napkin and watched the reader(s) choke as s/he read it and walked off giggling. -
Quote:And you know this is bad for the shareholders.... how?
It's not surprising that this community isn't taken seriously by NCSoft when it consistently insists on making sh*t up.
Because there could have been a nice tasty revenue stream - with nothing for them to do but count the money. They could have quite happily licensed the game and left the rest to a new team and taken a revenue stream for sitting on their collective arses! -
Quote:The only reason that would have failed would be because the greedy bastidges wanted too much money for something they were writing off. If they wanted to sell, they'd have taken an offer.
This
NCSoft have just said to us, and more importantly from a business point of view to their shareholders:
Quote:pancake you and the syrup bottle you rode in on -
I've joined TSW this weekend and having good fun with it. Enjoying it a lot so far.
Oh I should add I'm Ruby "ScarletShocker" Reddy on Arcadia -
I've tried CO more than once but it doesn't work well for me. I just dislike the lack of any meaningful teaming and the graphics just don't do it for me.
But I might pop in from time to time -

Quote:If they want to keep the database sane, why not just keep a backup of the current state of the DB, and then do it?
The mass level bumping, etc.
Obviously I don't know anything about their database though so, yeah...
That and I've never managed any databases of any type, so I expect someone to reply to me with "DUDE DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD DATABASES ARE TO MANAGE"
Having no developers to manage the database could be a problem though.
Not everyone wants a level bump. It would need code to give players a choice I guess. It's a lot of work - and there isn't anyone around to do that kind of stuff.
