  2. I have the great fortune of being paid up into next year. Yay me, money I'll never see again.
  3. There have been some very supportive posts over on the CO forums. I think the folks there feel our pain.

As for spirit... isn't that something we carry with us? If we can't keep the game alive I know that's what I'm hoping to do - take the spirit someplace new and hope it takes root.
  4. I'm afraid I can't see where this report points to a problem with CoH. I see a massive drop in sales for Aion and a massive drop in the Korean market. I also see a drop in profit due to "one-off" expensive (such as severance pay). No where in the report do I see any indication that CoH is causing a problem for the company. In fact, it appears the CoH is a relatively small piece of their overall picture that is completely overshadowed by their other areas.

Speaking from experience, cutting a revenue source because it's small is not a good way to do business. If your business is spending more than it earns then your best choice is to eliminate costs as much as possible while keeping all of your sources of revenue, even small ones. If Paragon Studios was consistently costing NCSoft more than it was earning and there was no way to cut costs then discontinuing the game would be a sound judgement call, but I see no evidence of that in this report.

But the biggest failure here has nothing to do with whether CoH was profitable or not, it has to do with bad community relations. The way they handled the situation has damaged their public relations and now they will have to spend even more money on marketing to try to overcome it.

In a world of mega corporations, the one voice the consumer has is with his or her money and I, for one, will not be giving any more of mine to NCSoft. It is the best and the only way we can show them how much we dislike what they have done.

(The flip side of that is, of course, that I will be taking my money to where ever our devs end up next.)
  5. Melissa, and everybody at Paragon Studios, thank you so very much for all your hard work. You made this game really shine. Needless to say any future project I see your names on is going to get my attention immediately. I really hope to see your work again soon!
  6. Paragon Studios folks,

If buying City of Heroes and continuing development interests you, Kickstarter could be the way to go. Marc Miller, creator of the classic Sci-Fi roleplaying game "Traveller" had been working on version 5 of the game for years, but never seemed to get any closer to publication. He used Kickstarter and set a goal of $24,000 so he could get the game published. In the end, he raised an unbelievable $294,628. Let me say that again, because it's just so amazing, he raised OVER A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS to publish the 5th edition of a very old pen & paper roleplaying game. With this community, I think you stand a VERY good chance of raising a lot more than that.
  7. My wife and I both have several months still on our subscriptions. I'm not holding my breath that we'll get a refund. Buy another NCSoft game? LOL Yeah, right.
  8. I play TOR and enjoy it, but to replace CoH (not that anything ever really can) it'll probably be CO. The game had problems at first, but it's improved a lot.

Where ever I go, I plan to go with the friends I've made here. I think we all agree it's important to stay together.

    To all of you...

I think many of us are still in a state of shock, but I think I've got just enough brain cells firing to say "thank you to everyone at Paragon Studios for a wonderful game!" You have everything to be proud of for your work here.
  10. I went to log into the game this morning and when I select my server I get this message - Wrong game version, run patcher and reconnect, server 2150.201111031938.1, client 2151.201111120053.1

I ran a repair and it comes up all okay, but I still get the same error. Did you folks put the client patch up a little too earlier this morning?

    /agree

That's the one I was referring to when I said "the missing health bar is a serious issue."

It's not a huge leap of logic to determine that you can drag power icons from other places as well.

It's pretty obvious that Inspirations brings up your inspiration trays and Enhancements brings up your enhancement trays. Anyone who has ever played a videoi game in their life is going to eventually figure that looking in the tab called "Powers" would be a good place to start to find powers they expect they should have.

I think you dramatically underestimate the average gamer's ability to figure things out.
That's a petty response to a reasonable question.

Years ago many people started calling the game City of Bugs because there were just so many bugs that never seemed to get fixed. Now the game is starting to develop another list of them. No, they're mostly aren't serious problems (the missing health bar is a serious issues), but it is reasonable to ask if they're going to get fixed.

*Yes, you have the option to Grant Ivis. Setting aside arguments about the GI's merit, it's still a power pick wasted on a power you may not even want and will never use. That's wasteful and a stupid, un-fun choice to make players decide on the lesser of two evils.

IMO the prerequisites on pool powers are unneeded and are just an annoying restriction that doesn't add any fun to building a character. They should be removed on ALL pools and the only restrictions be the number of separate pools you can dip into and the level you can take the powers.

    .
    Gotta agree with this.

Also, how about sprucing up some of the wimpier pool powers to make them actually useful? What is the point of having any powers in the game that nobody wants to take? Same thing about brawl and your origin starting power. Make them decent enough that they're worth using even after you've gotten a few of your powerset attacks.

I dunno, Golden Girl, in my experience a lot of players, particularly younger players, prefer to play the evil side. I know that in an upcoming good vs. evil type game that I've been keeping an eye on it is pretty well split between light side and dark side.

Personally, I rarely play a villain because I find the Rogue Isles depressing and annoying to navigate. Nerva is the only redside zone I like at all. I know a lot of people who feel the same way I do.
  15. The street and starlit sky are what I found most amazing. That must have taken many, many hours of work to put together. My base needs work but, frankly, with no new stuff it's gotten rather boring. I also wish our beloved devs would give us base builders some love.

I'd also love to know how they got the laser light effect. I've never seen anything like that.

Because it's a common way to name neighborhoods in the real world.
  17. It looks really nice. I'm glad it's not the GR one, that yellow hurts my eyes. I always have to dim it down a couple of notches in order to make a character.
  18. Honestly, I don't play redside because I find the zones depressing and annoying to navigate. My wife and I were both disappointed that Mercy Island had not been included in the update for Freedom. Villainy is everywhere, not just on decimated island city states. Improve the redside zones and I'll play there.

As for that other game that was mentioned, I love playing a villain there.

  20. I hope this suggestion isn't out of line. I was talking with my wife about this last night and the idea hit me.

When I started with CoH one of the things I really loved about the game was that there seemed to be a circular relationship between low-level characters, high-level characters and supergroups. Low-level characters could earn prestige for their supergroups, but needed influence to buy enhancements. High-level players had lots of influence, but needed more prestige for their supergroups. So, there was this great relationship that encouraged groups to work together and I loved that. Unfortunately, it seems like that relationship has been broken now that we have the invention and auction house systems.

So, my thought was "what if you tie the incarnates back into the low-level characters and supergroups?" Perhaps boost the prestige low-level characters earn and add some new base features that help low-level characters and some that tie into the incarnate system. Give everyone a new and exciting reason to get involved with their supergroup again. Make the incarnates important to the lowbies and vice versa!

Perhaps gaining different incarnate abilities would unlock special and unique items in the base for lowbies (an improved teleporter system would be a good start) and prestige could be used to install items that tie-in with and help the incarnates? And, of course, this would be a big boon for your base builder community which hasn't seen anything new for a long, long time.

This just seemed to me like an idea that didn't really require any new technology, just the creation of some new base items and tweaking of some existing rewards. And what you get for it is something that can appeal to new players (which Freedom should bring in a lot of), alt-o-holics, base builders, and incarnates. Seems like a win-win scenario with a relatively low cost.

I'm not the sort to worry about kill counts. I just remember (and yes, this was quite awhile ago - it's been years since IOs came out) wondering why the heck I was having such a hard time compared to my friends. When I switched to IOs the problem was solved. Sometimes a few percent can make a difference, not to mention the periods when SOs start to fade before you can get new ones.

Read what I wrote again - I am specifically referring to powers like "heal." Yes, there are lots of powers that can help with endurance recovery and some that let you steal endurance from your target(s), but I'm not aware of a single power that is just a "click and recover" power like a regen scrapper's heals or an empath's heals.

    (and yes, Kin is wonderful.)

    AE Removal?

I dunno... since AE came out I have not been pestered by people wanting me to PL them, Bridge for them, pad their team, etc., etc. I consider this a big plus.

  24. Herding and pulling aren't the same thing, though. Pulling IS slow, but sometimes the only safe way to take out a group that is too close to a second group or near a boss when you can't handle all of them at once. Herding can be very fast if you have a good team.

But I hate it when some team members ignore the tank's attempts to herd. I'm not talking about when a team decides not to herd - I mean when the tank is herding and most of the team gets back, but one smart **** decides he knows better and short circuits the herding. It usually results in more deaths and more wasted time while the stragglers are rounded up. If you're finding that just rushing in is quicker, then you can probably afford to turn up the difficulty (or your one of those people who thinks spending 40 minutes out of every hour running back from the hospital is good gaming).

Keep in mind that when the tank herds all of the mobs into a tight knot, you're going to get all of them into the range of your AoE attacks making them much more effective. If you don't let your tank herd, then half the mobs will escape your debuffs, holds, etc. Especially these days with all the *#@$!! runners.

I've seen a good herding tank run through missions so fast you feel like your level 40 is gaining exp like a level 10. As in most things, it's the people that make the difference.

I always thought the idea of enhancements was so that we could customize our powers to enhance the effects we want, but that's not how it works. If you don't put the right enhancements in your powers you end up handicapping your character. To me that sort of negates the very point of having enhancements to begin with.

As for IO's being optional; I was never particularly excited by the invention system when it came out and tried ignoring it. It became quickly apparent, however, that I was not going to be able to do that. Try running an SO slotted character in a team fully slotted with IOs and you will quickly find yourself frustrated or just plain in over your head.

I was pretty excited about the incarnate system when I first heard about it but now that we have some details... well, it's just more enhancement slots. It just means that now I'm going to be forced to run task forces in order for my level 50 characters to remain effective. I'm sorry, but it just seems like more grinding to me.

I have to admit, though, that I probably have an unfair distaste for task forces and I am actually looking forward to giving them another try. My first task force, years ago, was a horrid mess that took over 8 hours and I've never been able to get excited about them since. I've been told since then that the particular task force I ran had big problems and it has since been fixed.

Don't take this as a "rage post" or something like that. I like City of Heroes. I've played it longer than any other MMO I've tried and I think it is a very good game. I think Going Rogue was/is an awesome expansion and I'm really looking forward to inherent fitness (as anyone who has heard me complain about endurance will tell you).

You know, that just made me think of something - you know what I think a major problem with endurance is? There are lots of powers you can use if you're health is running low (self heals, defender heals, etc), but almost no powers to help when your endurance is running low. I think adding some endurance healing powers would be a good thing! Games like Dragon Age have them even though endurance isn't anywhere near as vital in that game. Maybe it could even be a new Defender power set! Who wouldn't want that kind of defender on their team! Hmm.. might go well with the end drain of the electric set too.

Sorry if this was a bit of a ramble.
