The Council are basically a 5th Column revamp (better level progression) and they were in since the start.
I found the Combine a fairly original concept meself. -
They couldn't cast Blue Steel.

It won't happen. You're FF and have nothing in the line of Regen debuffing or Resistance cutting (Achillies aside). Factor in Merc damage and you've got yourself an impossible fight.
Seriously, Merc/FF will not be soloing (temps aside) any AVs.
They weren't at 50 mind you but still.
Basic advice: Ditch Serum, it's useless, at either Swift or Hurdle, you really shouldn't need both. See if there's any Patron pools that can help you. -

And they do.
What they don't want is widespread, super efficient leveling/reward generation, and they will take steps to keep farming behavior from spreading beyond the highly motivated group who pursue it as their primary style of game play.
But they have zero interest in the kind of ideologically driven campaign of extinction you dream of.
People are always gonna be finding ways to pl, farm and exploit. They pretty much say that they don't care what the devs do, they'll eventually find ways around it. As long as the devs continue to make farming harder, at least they'll keep it away from the newbies. -
Most of the 'assault/defense' suggestions I hear are pretty much filled by Soldiers of Arachnos.

His WW2 costume actually had a full helmet and wasn't bad either.
That said, I don't mind his half-helmet. It makes him a little different from other superheroes, I think, and hints his Greek Mythology origins. -

I am on the pro-nerfsledgehammer side apparently, but I'm actually curious in seeing some examples of MMOs that leave exploits open and remain unbalanced.

The whole 'primaries are more powerful' thing may be a good basic guide but isn't really a rule- ask any Blaster.

Luckily, the game is well balanced and each and every one of those combinations you find is viable, though some might do better while on a team.
And if you want to know more about how they play- you're in the right place! Each of the Archetype forums has guides on how every combination plays, and you can just open a thread asking on how certain combinations will play. -
More people run the respec trials for merits, mind you. It's not really a bad thing, means you don't need a crippled build to join.
Just about every Issue (major free game update) brings with it a free respec for every character, though they don't stack so I reccomend using it before the next issue comes. -

Not much more than a power like Energy Blast. There's quite a few line swinging/climbing characters. Now if the power involved shooting webbing or the lines ended in little bat-grapples it would be another matter.

Wow, I thought purple+orange=eyebleed but that's actually pretty good.
I'd make the gloves and stockings orange, but that's just me. -
If you're asking this wondering how long it'll take Going Rogue to do the same, I wouldn't get your hopes up. CoV was merged to phase out the confusing 'expanshalone' thing when it was clear if they treated them like two games it would cause more problems than it's worth, while Going Rogue seems to be a more traditional expansion that isn't nearly as independent.

Redside tends to be less popular, and most people there are soloing.
Difficulty is definitely not a reason, villain ATs are better built around soloing and being self-reliant than hero ATs.
