Quote:Dictionary.com :Supernatural and Magic are synonymous in this universe of discourse. Magical qualities acquired from external sources or study, or inherent power, or even characters who are magical/praeternatural/supernatural by ...er...nature, are all Magic origin. Gods, demons, imps, vampires (classical), boggles, goblins, oni, ghosts, you name it.
Now, I can make various arguments for various in game interpretations.Quote:adjective 1. of, pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena; abnormal. 2. of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or attributed to God or a deity. 3. of a superlative degree; preternatural: a missile of supernatural speed. 4. of, pertaining to, or attributed to ghosts, goblins, or other unearthly beings; eerie; occult.
1: deals with *our* natural laws. Of course, as generally vague as this definition is, you could at points throw science, tech, or mutation in there ("Abnormal") and call it supernatural.
2: Generally fits "magic" I suppose - but if that being manifested itself in the world and used its abilities (as opposed to going through a worshipper/priest/"chosen one,") I'd say an argument could be made it's natural origin for them in many cases. "Why can you control weather?" "I *am* weather. It's part of me. It's what I do."
3: By this definition... well, almost every character in COH is probably "supernatural." Even our "most natural, most human" characters start out sprinting faster than cars, for instance, and can take a rocket to the face without flinching (much.)
4: Related to 2. Have a demon doing demon-y things? Likely natural for them. Have someone controlling ghosts and compelling zombies to fight for them? Potentially magic.
My biggest disagreement with your post, BB, is the "... all magic origin" bit. Yes, a demon is of a supernatural origin, here, but its own abilities would - unless augmented by the summoner, for instance, or enhanced by the Infernal Sword of Bad Tech Support or a similar item - be natural to them. Ghosts, to most, have certain ghost-y characteristics (cooling an area, being hard to see/invisible and the like) - those would be the natural characteristics of a ghost. Now, have that ghost somehow possess a suit of armor and use its armor and weapons? We have a tech-enhanced ghost.

It depends on the powerset for me. Some, I can't wait to get some number of levels under my belt - rarely for stamina, usually "so I have SOME freaking powers to use." Others are great from the get-go (my Mind/Fire dom was one of these. Hopped down from the fort in Mercy, took on a large spawn down on the beach - or pair of spawns, we're looking at a good 10:1 fight - and cranked up the difficulty at level 3, the level she was at when that finished.)

Quote:That used to be simple to answer. >.< Use equivalent cards (a 9800 and GT260 do not get SLI'd together.) Now, ATI does have something which can use the onboard and a new card, tri-card setups with one card being used for physics are seen, and MSI (I believe) has released a board with fuzion's "hydra" chispset which doesn't particularly care (in theory you could mix ATI and nVidia cards. I'd hate to see - or more specifically, troubleshoot - what happens.)
For multi-card rigs, though, do all of the cards have to be equivalent, like with RAM? Or can I get a decent card now and link it up with a newer card down the line? And can you link up the on-board graphics processor into the loop?
Generally, though, I'd still assume the answer to be "yes" to using the same card. -
Quote:Well, his prices come from newegg. If you want something somewhat current to compare, this months MaximumPC has a $649 PC as well, though they (obviously) have a few different requirements - they do also go into putting it together.I may have to just go with a build-it-yourself model comp. Something that I can hide in the monthly batarang budget. Buy a part or two at a time.
I looked at FatherXmas' $600 model, but that's six months old, so maybe something better has come out for a similar price. I wouldn't need new hard drives or opticals, so that would save some there.
But that would be the first that I've ever built from the ground up and well...it's intimidating... >.<
Edit: Yeah, still "this month's issue," so they don't have it in the (free) PDF download format.
Rundown with their listed prices (not doing the newegg listing for them all, but that was their source for prices at press time.) Anyway, their parts listing:
CPU - Athlon II x4 620 - $99
MB - Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 - $57
RAM - Patriot 4 Gb DDR2-800 $85
Video - Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 $166
HD - Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200.12 - $55
Optical - Samsung SH-S223c $26
Case - Rosewill R220 $19
Power - Coolermaster RS-460, $35
OS - Windows Home Premium OEM $109
As far as building - it's really not that bad. Starting with a general rule of thumb of "If it doesn't seem to want to go in, it's either turned around or doesn't go there in the first place." Just don't go crazy with your first build, and do some research. -
Illusion. Cannot *stand* Illusion. Give me any controller except that. I've run most sets up pretty high - Illusion's the first one that I've said "Y'know, 32 is good enough, wonder if I can delete this - do I need the space?"
Not fond of most VEATs. -
Quote:I have a friend that, if she sees that, is *so* going to want that as a skin/mod in L4D2.Can you get one of these in that game?
At least it wasn't the hotel room.... *shudder* -

Quote:Eh.You have to admit, when one looks at who replies to their posts, which I always do, if someone has over 20,000 posts like yourself, I pretty much know I'll get an answer to what I'm looking for. Not to say that someone who just signed on as a Recruit couldn't give me the right answer but I do think it does hold some weight because I think you are more "exposed" to the going on's within these forums.
With that being said, I was always curious on these numbers. My thought was the higher the number the more prestige and credibility that person brings to the table in getting the, not necessarily right, but better answer to what I'm looking for.
Eventually you recognize names, versus post counts. FatherXmas (who I just noticed *is* over 10,000 - thought he was lower) I've pretty much taken as one of the last words on computer hardware for... well, years. Or, for instance, Macskull on PVP issues. Even if I don't particularly *like* someone, if I know they've got the experience, I'll take their word. (Snowglobe and I don't get along, particularly, for instance - on the other hand, I've got a friendly rivalry with EvilGeko.) There are some names that, if they say something on a subject, it's the fact it's *them* saying it versus "They have X many posts" that make me give it any more (or less, in the case of some, like power_na) consideration. Otherwise - it's by what I'm seeing in the body of the post, not that column to the left.
Of course, in some of those instances, the fact they *are* the go-to people leads to more posts from them, so that can be a bit of a circular situation.
If there were a real "give this person's opinion due weight" number, most of the above would have appropriately high "rank" regardless of post count, reg date, or forum rep.

Quote:You're assuming, of course, the character is human. I have a fire blaster who's essentially a fire elemental - for that character, it's natural. Alternately, I have an electric blaster whose ancestors were priestesses and guardians for a specific goddess - that duty/blessing/power was passed down. (Magic.)No, that would be mutant. It's a power you inherently have that isn't available to the rest of humanity.
There are multiple ways for this to happen. However, that doesn't mean we need new origins. -
/this.
Already covered by existing origins.
"Inherent," other than already being a - you can call it mechanic or power type, I suppose, is so broad-based to be even more meaningless than our existing origins.
Example:
Your father trained you in martial arts - hello, Natural.
You found your mother's stash of magical items, she trained you, you took up her mantle - magic.
You found your father's experimental powersuit - tech.
Supernatural:
Vampire, Werewolf - depends on the character's backstory. Come from a world of werewolves? Natural. If you go with a "werewolf virus," you could probably call it mutant, or science, or natural. Curse? Magic, and so forth. -
My first response is, "Why worry about it, or how many posts anyone has?" Because, quite frankly, it doesn't matter. I have quite a few... doesn't mean I'm not wrong, or that someone else posting their very first post doesn't have a brilliant idea or view we should listen to. (Tangental point - it seems the people (not you specifically) that worry most about post counts are those with lower ones - there get to be spurts of "You think everyone should listen to you because you have X many posts!" that, quite frankly... I can't recall anyone WITH one of the higher post counts, or reg dates for that matter, using as any sort of justification.)
Go down to Forum Games. There are, or were, some long threads in there (haven't been in there in a long, long time,) where just an hour of back and forth BSing could probably add 20-30-40 posts in an hour. Even ignoring that area, just some back and forth arguments can add several posts a day just from one thread. -
Quote:I believe I did.Bill- did you just need to go to the main Comcast homepage to get the DL? Sounds like this is my best option, but until the new system gets here and is up and running I cant really check it out, and i would prefer not to get online without my AV suite installed first...
Thanks for the input folks.

head to comcast.net, sign in.
Head down to customer central...
And it looks like they've switched to norton here, too. >.<

Quote:If we're not uploading music ourselves (which, seriously, nobody who thinks about it for more than a second would realize is remotely feasable thanks to all the legalities, royalties, etc.) but picking already available, in-game music, I'd call it feasable.Given that the current MA file size-cap is 100k, I hope you enjoy MIDI, because even with MP3 or OGG formatting, you're still looking at a decent size, unless you drop the bit-rate, which has a very noticeable effect on sound quality.
Line: Music
Default: None
Dropdown list (with "play" button) with various already-in-game clips.
You wouldn't need to add the whole thing to your 100k, just a line or two that calls it. -
With apologies to my Resistance bretheren - this was just more important.
'tis in the sig, with a link to this post. -
Might be interesting. I wouldn't mind being able to do it with common recipes, though - you mention an infinite supply, but by the same token, who would buy (say) three Intangibles to convert for a chance for a Damage, as opposed to just buying the Damage recipe straight out?
(I'm thinking of my standard "Oh, look, another Range recipe...." Yes, they're a source of income, but it would be nice to combine them at times, too.) -
But some of this already has been (somewhat) answered.
Quote:Depends on if things like Ultra mode (which could be released separately) are ready and how *long* they're ready before GR is finalized. "Possible, but we don't know."Will there be a round of Power Proliferation before Going Rogue. Electric Controllers was mentioned at Hero Con but nothing since.
Will there be another issue before Going Rogue is released at all ??
Impact seems to be mostly focused on video cards, though "you should have a decent system." (paraphrased.) Minimum spec won't cut it. nVidia cards were already listed by Positron, and ATI cards seemed to be in testing. Finalized specs not yet listed.Quote:What will be PC specs be to run " Ultra Mode "?
Or the direct quote:
Quote:After demoing the Ultra-mode at HeroCon, one of the most frequently asked questions we have been receiving is what are the video cards you recommend to get the most out of Ultra-mode? With the holiday season coming up, we asked the programmers in charge of implementing the features of Ultra-mode what they would recommend. We would like to forward this information on to you so you can better work on your holiday shopping lists. If you are looking to spend under US$100, then an NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we dont have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings. If you are looking to spend between $100 and $200, the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 260 will do you well. We dont have numbers from the Radeon 57xx series yet to verify if that is better or worse though. This would end up somewhere in the middle of Ultra-mode quality. Finally if you are going to spend over $200, the GeForce GTX 285 is an excellent choice. We dont have numbers from the Radeon 58xx series yet. This would be able to run Ultra-mode with the quality maxed out (except we have no data on Anti-aliasing, so caveat emptor when it comes to that specific feature). Note: This is based on our current internal testing and might change by the time Going Rogue is released. Also, a video card is not the ONLY thing you should take into consideration. Your PC having a decent processor and memory will also enhance your performance. As we continue to test and get more information available we will update you. I hope this helps, and happy holidays!

Quote:Well, I couldn't beat the price on Mcafee (free through my ISP - Comcast) and it seems to stay out of the way pretty well on both my work (WinXP Pro) and home/gaming (Win7 x64) systems. Of course, I end up backing it up with manual scans and spyware/malware scans with things like Malwarebytes. Haven't caught anything... well, ever, that I can recall, but I watch what I'm doing and what's going on. (And usually spend at least an hour or more a day at work fixing peoples systems that *don't.* )Does anyone have a recommendation on a good anti-virus suite?
I usually run adaware, spybot, and I currently run Nortons (ugh..) but would like to switch to something less crappy.
Anyone like McAfee? Or another provider? Just looking fora some feedback on what other people use and how they like the performance.
Thanks -
Quote:Powersets I'd imagine would be part of the issue, not limited to GR - barring a sudden announcement of a GR-related EAT.This got me thinking. The other powersets that are coming with GR, are they actually coming with GR or are they I17. Any word if I17 is GR (well the part people do not need to pay for)? Dunno if ill end up confusing people, lol.
Ultra mode, they've mentioned the possibility of releasing early (if it was ready to go, and there was some delay in GR, for instance.) That, I'd expect to see in the patch.
GR-specific, the only things I'd safely say would be side switching (since it's done through missions in Praetoria,) the new zones and content... obviously

For the OP:
See what else the EVGA is doing. Is it overclocked, does it have more "stuff" with it, etc? If not, and PNY has been good for you - go with pny. (I seem to be using XFX a lot. Last four video cards.)
-
Perhaps you should make yourself more acquainted with the mission.
There are four in the mission. Twenty minutes (or more, depending on what you're playing) of just sitting there, pounding away at something that doesn't fight back, has no defense, etc.Quote:I think it took my lvl 49 claws brute almost 5 minutes to take out one of them.
This is a "Set power to auto, go watch TV, pick next one a commercial break or two later" mission. Does that sound fun to you? Or does that sound like something that should be adjusted?
My "adjustment" is to run through a different patron's arcs, even if I'm taking the Scorpion PPP, specifically to avoid this mind-numbingly boring exercise. -
Quote:In your opinion. Obviously not in the eyes of whoever reported it, or in the GMs.excuse me? Oh give me a break. I didnt say I wanted to do anything dirty. my characters name was really funny.
Do point out who here is in that single group doing that. I can save you a little time - it's not me, as I don't watch South Park, and would likely leave that group.Quote:Right now as I write this Im on a team now on Virtue, the "glorious good server where the serious players are", and the people on my team are reciting the lyrics to "Kyle's Mom's a B---- from South Park" complete with racist slurs about Kyle's religion. There going back and forth with the slurs.
So please dont give me any speeches or put downs about how you all are the mature ones and Im the immature dirty old man. I would never say that stuff in a team chat because I dont know who else is on or their age. but it's the kids who do.
Because - *gasp* - women have different bust sizes? (I tend to reduce mine. The slider DOES go both ways.)Quote:Especially when this game allows you to modify a female characters bust size (why would a teen game need that? hmm?),
You'll find all the above in comics and/or in real life. "Low cut top" does not mean anything, nor does a bikini (had a SG that had a beach party at one point - oh no, the horror,) or "short-shorts" (because, again, people wear them.)Quote:have wide open cleavage, extremely low cut tops, revealing bikinis and short-shorts, or male costumes with straps that look like S&M dungeon costume, complete with peirced nipples.
Prove the ones being "immature" are children. Prove the ones that act mature are not. Prove any of the above examples of "immaturity" have any sort of relation to age.Quote:So don't even try to gang up on me like I'm the bad one and you're all angels, I'll just vomit from the hypocracy.
Im just suggesting a place where the children cant enter. thats all.
You think those are the same thing, you really do have a distorted view of things. Though, honestly, you've proved that quite well already.Quote:Oh and Im so tired of the hypocrite players here who say one thing in public but do something else in the game.
Everyone hates pl'ing in public like its a low class thing, but theyre the first ones who thank me profusely for following their lowbie teams in the sewers and healing them or dropping lvl 50 ice patches under lvl 5 mobs giving them a completely unfair advantage.
BIG difference between a buff and PLing. I'd explain it to you, but from what I've seen in this thread it'd be a waste of time. -
Depends on the primary and secondary combination. F'rinstance, my Fire/SS can be a monster. Fire/EnM, I feel, is a bit "eh."

What's the difference between a Peacebringer and a Warshade?
This has been getting asked often enough from new (or soon to be) 50s to merit a quick-reply cut and paste from me. Welcome to the world of Khelds! Enjoy your stay?
Basic reading
These guides will help you a lot:
Iscariot's guide to the triform Warshade by Justaris. Yes, it's warshade specific.
Plasma's ultimate guide to Kheldians for a very thorough overview. Really. It's long-ish, but read it.
And for the backstory, there's my own backstory guide. More "in game lore" than powers.
A quick overview
Khelds in general - Can be built around one (human) form or multiple forms, known as biform or triform. The other forms act like a blaster and a sort of "pocket tank." Human form buffs carry over - if you hit Hasten, you get it for the full length of Hasten. it doesn't cut off when you switch forms. Toggles, however, do at this time.
That said, the two are different in many fundamental ways.
Peacebringer - the old reliable.
Peacebringers are completely "self contained" Khelds. What this means is that all of their buffs and heals are going to act exactly the same, given the same level and slotting, every time. If you're level 40 and hit your self-heal for, say, 200 HP (making up a number) one time, and you hit it again without levelling, you'll get 200 HP again.
Peacebringers are more melee-oriented. They're more "in your face" than a Warshade. The example I used one other time was, if you insult a Peacebringer in a bar, they'll punch you in the mouth. A Warshade will go outside, slit your tires and fill your gas tank with sugar.
Peacebringers get Fly as an inherent travel power, and are locked out of any form of Teleport (other than the Dwarf form teleport, if you take that form.) And all Peacebringer attacks do a -defense debuff to whatever they hit.
Peacebringer Dwarf form gets an AOE knockdown and a click self heal that, again, is completely self contained.
Warshades - the wild, unpredictable ride.
Warshades have higher highs and lower lows in their performance. Where Peacebringers are completely self contained, Warshades rely on living or defeated foes for their buffs. Self heals - especially Stygian Circle - perform better with more defeated enemies around. Self buffs - such as Sunless Mire and Ecliipse - will give greater benefit with more live foes around. (This is part of why they also get some self-stealth, an oppressive Gloom clone, and I'm pretty sure part of the reason behind Teleport.)
Warshades are very control heavy. Every attack does some -slow and -recharge if it hits. They get an option of self stealth in shadow cloak, an Oppressive Gloom (PBAOE stun) clone, Gravity Well as a hold and other immobilizes and stuns.
Warshades also get somewhat longer lasting pets (and, generally, more useful) in Extracted Essence, which adds to your firepower, but requires a freshly defeated enemy to extract. It's also pretty much impossible to get them from ghost-type enemies and machines that explode. You can, with enough recharge, have up to three of them out for a short time, but they will expire. The plus side is that they do stick around once you're defeated. A Warshade in Nova with two "koosh balls" next to them spitting out damage is loads of fun.
Warshade Dwarf form gets another Mire (recently buffed!) and their self heal is a single-target attack which must hit - it's a copy of Siphon Life from Dark Melee.
Warshades, of course, also start with Teleport and are locked out of Fly (except in Nova form.) that said, TP Foe (Starless Step) and Gravity Well (your hold) are an excellent way to take care of pesky Void hunters before they get a shot off at you. You also get Shadow Recall at level 10, which pre-travel-power teammates (and later, those who want to stealth missions) will greatly appreciate.
Which is better?
They're both good, but they shine in different situations. If I'm clearing out a map, a Warshade's going to have lots of groups to play with, siphon from, get essences and the like. If I'm facing a long, one on one fight versus, say, an AV or EB, the Peacebringer's going to have an easier time with it, as the Warshade will only have the one target to buff from and will, over time, lose the essences.
I *generally* suggest a first time Kheld start with a Peacebringer to get a feel for everything. That said, they're both a lot of fun - and yes, I have multiples of them at 50, and don't regreat any of them. -
Quote:On what settings?and how long would it "ACTUALLY" take you to farm 100 mill not drops but real influ generation?
Personally, I don't care. I throw stuff on the market for 5 inf and take whatever someone will buy it at, if I pay attention to the market at all.
