That would be so cool.

THIS would get me to start making AE arcs.

Would this be stock clips (like the zone music) or someone else's licensed work (like Top 40's songs downloaded from iTunes)?

That was my initial thought but then I realized that it's very unlikely to be licensed stuff just because of copyright issues.

That's the thing, allowing us to select the music for arc from the in-game selection is one thing. Allowing us to upload mp3s is not really practical from a legal perspective.

Upgrade in-game music first. Ambient music! Not the stuff that trails off we have atm.

Given that the current MA file size-cap is 100k, I hope you enjoy MIDI, because even with MP3 or OGG formatting, you're still looking at a decent size, unless you drop the bit-rate, which has a very noticeable effect on sound quality.

The ONLY way this could work would be to have an approved list of available music, which has previously been downloaded to our local machines via a patch.

Then you could tag which music to play during the mission (or maybe tie it to various events/clickies/etc), that way the only thing added to the AE files would be the tag info.

It would never work for you to upload you're own music selections (copywrite issues and all) and it would need to be on our local machines already to keep the AE file size at a decent level.

But, with all that in mind, sure. I'd be doubtful it'll ever happen (someone would have to find the time to assemble/approve/publish/etc the music files), but it would be kinda nice.

If we're not uploading music ourselves (which, seriously, nobody who thinks about it for more than a second would realize is remotely feasable thanks to all the legalities, royalties, etc.) but picking already available, in-game music, I'd call it feasable.

Line: Music
Default: None
Dropdown list (with "play" button) with various already-in-game clips.

You wouldn't need to add the whole thing to your 100k, just a line or two that calls it.

Tracker modules?

...

I kid, I kid.

The idea of selecting from a list of dev-made music sounds good, mind, but I can't see that happening anytime soon. Not until the extremely unlikely event of any major changes to map-specific ambient music.

Sam: "My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas."
Max: "Me too."

I would imagine they could have certain tracks with different lengths of time...

Clips:

Crickets *10 seconds
Waves crashing *25 seconds (fades out)
Waves crashing *25 seconds (fades in)
Lightning and Thunder *Entire mission
Lightning and Thunder * 1 minute (fades in)
Maniac Screaming *5 seconds
Maniac Screaming * every 1-3 minutes randomly

Full length music:

Croatoa Theme
IP Theme
Talos Theme
Atlas Theme
CoV Theme

Theme music:

Techno beat
HipHop beat
Rock beat
Heavy metal beat
slow jams beat
romantic beat
classical beat

etc etc etc

This would be fun, while we are at it we can put music on our boomboxes : D

That seems reasonable to me. It would be a nice addition to AE. I haven't done any messing in notepad with AE files, but it might be possible to attach music right now to AE files that way.

As long as it's within reason and doesn't attract an oversensitive musician with a fistful of lawyers, /signed. It'd certainly create a bit of atmosphere and keep players engaged in the arc.

Oh, and remember, support Aeon!

I wouldn't mind an option to set various musics already within the game to a map or to an event.

Since we know that the AE file-size will be doubling shortly, it could probably be accomplished under the new text-file description limits.

On the original topic, playing our own music in the game has been shot down several times, almost on a weekly basis. Maybe one of the mods needs to put up a sticky that players being able to upload music just simply isn't going to happen as long as entities like the RIAA are around.

That being said, maybe, just maybe, NCSoft and Paragon Studios could cut a deal with some of the guys from OCRemix.org to produce AE specific music.

Oh, and Television can take a long walk off a short pier and short circuit in the ocean. Aeon Forever!

This is the same argument against it that was brought up before.

That's exactly what would happen. People would immediately upload music that would infringe copyrights of others that would immediately sue our beloved game.

I'm really at a loss as to how anyone would want to do this, but people still make Marvel Characters so there is just no explaining to some people why this is wrong in general and completely against the EULA and Codes of Conduct.

Do I even need to add the fact that there are over 350k arcs and each one could have at least one different sound track per mission? So 700k more songs/data added to the AE and extra download time every time you wanted to run an AE arc?

Look at the size of the AE files. How much room of that file size should be allowed to be eaten up by sound track?

Well, I completely against the idea - still. It was a bad idea before. It's still a bad idea now.

If those were INGAME already, What is the problem with allowing us to insert them into our arcs.

Its not a bad idea...

This version of the idea sounds like a perfect compromise.

My preferred idea for music: Instead of a global music tab, the Devs would package several sound node objects into the MA (similar to how certain musical elements are handled in missions already, AFAIK).

The big difference is that instead of being stuck putting it at the start of a mission or throughout the whole mission, you could add these musical objects to the spawn zones of boss encounters and the like, resulting in dramatic stings.
