Quote:I like the "helping the helpless" angle as you do. To this day, I cannot pass if I hear a victim being tortured by the Circle of Thorns cry out.Not even WHAT you play - I'm asking more about WHY and/or HOW you play.
Me: Why? I like pretending to be a superhero and help out.
How? I play for fun first and foremost - it's not about getting xx heroes to 50 as quickly as possible, or min/maxing my 50s, or badge-hunting, or making billions on the market - I just do whatever seems fun to me at that moment (often this involves bouncing around Atlas healing/buffing/SBing lowbies on the street - no xp, no inf gain involved, I just think it's FUN).
I play Controllers and Blaster for the most part, although I have rolled up a few Defenders lately.
The only title I use on my heroes is "Protector of Innocents"...
Yep, I am a real Silver Age sort of hero when I play. -

Liberty, for the most part. My free veteran slots all go here. 6 of my lvl 50s are here. A great server-- folks are generally friendly and have some good friends and SGs there.
I started a few heroes on Triumph back in the day because I figured I would run out of room on Liberty. Only about 6 or so, but one is a lvl 50. Folks are good on Triumph as well.
One day Liberty and Triumph were both crashed, so I started a hero on Protector. I probably play there the second most now, but again, only about 7 heroes or so. Protector is a bit more sparse, but still great folks.
I joined an all-Earth SuperTeam on Justice and have a lvl 50 there now by his lonesome. A higher pop server, I may start someone else there if my one guy can play the Market right for a grubstake.
And I have a hero on Freedom, just on a whim to see what it is like.
Usually I will be on Liberty, though. -
Quote:It is very often the case that some powers are very useful early on and can be dropped later in favor of something more useful. If AS is helping you by 1) causing damage and 2) keeping a baddie on his keister instead of attacking you, Go For It! Respec later once your full powersets are coming into their own.Air superiority has been vital to my leveling...
of course, I could just respec out of it when I'm of a level where using it would be suicideRight now though, it's the fastest way to take down groups. Especially useful against Lt.
The ST Immob for my controllers who stayed at range was a useful damage component early on, with some damage enhancements. Later, I rarely used it, so I dropped it for something else. You will have a good feel for when AS might not be so useful any longer. But if you continue to use it and like what it does, then that just illustrates the truth that there are many ways to play a hero.
To pick up on a related note: Nemesis are painful to fight, period, but even moreso for Plant Controllers. Nems ignore stun and confuse and the Jaegers sneer at the knockdown on Freezing Rain. Snow Storm will not make their missions a milk run, but every little bit helps with those scum. Attacks slow down a lot. I stick it on a Boss, and because it is autohit, every baddie in range gets the Running Scene in Baywatch treatment. Now, you will still have the problem that the @#$%#$ snipers can see through Steamy Mist and outrange all hero powers and weaponry, but hey, we all love a challenge, right?
Snow Storm is useful to me at all levels, so I encourage you to take it.

Quote:If I recall correctly, minions count as one, Lieutenants count as two and Warwolves (Bosses) count as three on the progress bar. I read that somewhere, and my experience seemed to back that up. But now, with the New and Improved Progress Bars, this hypothesis can be tested.Just adding another one to the pile:
All wolves count towards the silver bullet badge.
The first time I got the badge, I, too, only went after the Warwolves. Imagine my surprise when I was running on a team through Striga missions with another hero and got the badge even though Warwolves had been few and far between.
Unless you run the missions or TF, you wind up doing a LOT of street-sweeping for those badges. -
Quote:our slogan was "Everybody fights. Everybody dies."
Of course that was 2004 and it took 500 hours to hit level fifty. 300 if you were crazy fast.
Everybody fights. Everybody dies. You with us?Quote:I have a different suggestion.
Instead of the goal of "50!", how about the goal of "fun!"
Have fun. Levels happen.Quote:Thanks guys,
Youve made me realise its not all about getting a 50, its all about fun 100%
Seriously, what are you going to do with an Epic AT that you are not doing already? Why not do that with a regular AT NOW and enjoy yourself?
There are many arcs with interesting stories in the regular game content. There are way cool zones to visit, like Dark Astoria, Cimerora and Croatoa. Great atmosphere and fun missions to run there. Some less so than others, and that is why there is the Mission Drop feature with contacts now.
I have been playing since March 2005, and I hit my 8th lvl 50 (Plant/Storm) just last night. I rolled him about a year and a half ago. I have enjoyed the ride of each of my varied heroes, and have met some good folks (some gone, some newer) and played on a lot of PUGs, which were always "interesting." (From We Always All Died to We Steamrolled Everything and all points in between.)
Relax and enjoy playing the game. Be the best Plant/Storm or whatever you are playing that you can be and enjoy doing it. If you do that, then when you get your epics, you will enjoy them, too. -

Bug Description:
What it seems to be boiling down to is that I cannot post in any thread that I posted in prior to the merge, like AASQ in the Games section. I get a blank page that says "Done" at the bottom.
A fuller description is here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=184814
But nothing I have tried that was suggested in the thread seems to help.
I switched it to Linear: Oldest First and the problem disappeared.

Steelclaw: you are surely a gifted writer in both the comic and dramatic idioms. I surely hope you play heroes as well!
On the OP's topic:
I have any number of heroes in that variety, but they have generally responded like the original Bruce Wayne: they will try to prevent others from suffering as they have.
These are the first heroes I rolled on the 3 servers where I primarily play.
1SGT Rutledge:
Blood was running from Thomas Rutledge's nose and ears, and he was covered in rubble, but the wall had collapsed in the other direction, and he was alive. It had obviously been hours. There was no sound or movement.
It had been a hospital, but no one had been spared. 30 years in the line and a .45 were no use against so many. There were no heavy weapons, no way to call for air or artillery support... just him, and he was no longer a young man. They had all died. He steadied himself on the remnant of the wall... and something caught his eye. The flagpole was twisted grotesquely, and at the end of it, the burnt and tattered remnant of Old Glory still smouldered.
He had known such enemies before, enemies who did not spare women, children or the helpless, and whose highest goal was to destroy the country that he loved. And on that bier for all of the innocent people he had been unable to save, for the first time in over four decades, Thomas Rutledge wept.
It will not happen again.
A little different twist for my lab assistant robot, Clyde Mark V:
May 23, 2002 23:47 Hours
Status Report:
All systems functional; some at greatly diminished capacity. Repair subroutines initiated.
Residence massively damaged. All structures for approximately 40 blocks in all directions appear to be likewise decimated.
Dr. McDaniels is non-functional. All medical subroutines have failed to affect this status.
Dr. McDaniels' most recent instructions: "Clyde: Initiate defensive subroutines. Protect and defend the human citizens from hostile attack, using initiated Ethical Protocols. Oh... God help us!"
Attackers non-functional. Efforts to persuade them to desist hostile actions non-successful. Efforts to procure their peaceful surrender non-successful. Defensive subroutines initiated.
Further instructions from Dr. McDaniels do not appear to be forthcoming. I shall endeavor to carry out his current directives.
My main, Melancton, was the very first hero I rolled. His story is much refined now, but this is his original in-game bio, still the same today:
Melancton was in retirement; a champion in the Guild of Free Adventurers who had long ago laid his weapons aside. His oath to protect the weak and helpless had been honored, and his sworn foes, the Circle of Thorns, had been annihilated on his world.
One day, a vision of an Earthling being tortured by the Circle came to him. "Who will save her?" he was asked. "Here am I," Melancton responded, "Send me." Reality inverted and he was in Paragon, galaxies away from his home on the planet Eamon.
It took Melancton time to learn the extent of how he could now manipulate electricity and fire. But he has never hesistated to come again to the aid of the weak and helpless, and to destroy the Circle of Thorns and their allies--- "The Armies of Night."
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
Indeed, that exchange with a citizen has been my signature since that day. -
Quote:What is fun in Babel Fish is to have it translate a block of English text into another language, then have it translate that language back into English.Have you tried Babble Fish?
More on topic, however, I have seen the "advertising" for CoH in the form of "I'm a Hero/I'm a Villain" and the Captain Awesome bits. All well and good, but none of them tell you anything about playing the game and how cool it is. They are comedy routines, but do not inspire me to play the game.
Now crank up Sam's trailer for Midnight Hour or Invasion. Perfect synergy of dramatic soundtrack and game clips. Snippets of cool, ominous "narrative" to give the context. How can you NOT want to jump in there and play after seeing it in action??
I have said it before, but I am happy to reiterate it here. If you want folks that know nothing about the game to be inspired to BUY AND PLAY the game, HIRE THE GAL ALREADY! -
*cue Twilight Zone music*
Okay, I am trying to adapt to the new boards like everyone else. They work a bit differently, to say the least. I did not know the avatars would not port over, so I will have to take care of that, and navigation is taking some getting used to, but So Far, So Good.
EXCEPT...
There are some threads that, no matter where I click, whether First Post, Last Post, whatever...
The screen is blank and says "Done" in the lower left hand corner. It will not display the page.
This happens 95% of the time with these particular threads, except for the very odd happenstance in which the page displays normally. I have had this happen on various different computers.
This also seems to happen especially (but not only) with threads I have posted in prior to the migration (*insert jokes about That Is Why It Won't Display, They Have Seen How You Post here*)
I use Internet Explorer (*insert You Need To Switch To Browser X exhortations here*) and the vast majority of pages display without a hitch.
Anyone else having this problem? And What In The Wide World Of Sports could be causing this? -
Quote:FatherXmas, I presume you mean shopping at WW's by doing it right after starting the game. My 512MB Wonder could run CoH in i3 when I started, but had major issues by the time i6 arrived. (Fortunately, I upgraded to a new computer with a couple GB of RAM by that time.) My 512MB wonder eventually got upgraded to its max of 1GB, and upon occasion, I still log on to it... what a mess. Just flying PAST WW's will make it pause and consider for a bit before I can continue past.3) Shop as soon as you start the game and login. I rarely had problems when playing over at my parent's house with their 512MB wonder.
Well, them's was the days when 512MB and dialup could work reasonably well. -

Quote:O2 Boost should never be used for "healing a party." It is not up to the task. I use it thusly:I only take O2 at the end of my build. I use it for pet heal only. You'll never see me trying to heal a party when I can do much more with my control powers.
1) To save someone "in the red" from the brink of death, one time. (Don't look for more than that band-aid; happy to keep you from dying, but that is that.)
2) To break sleep or stun on someone, one time.
3) To innoculate folks against Sapper/Carnie drains before we take a group on. Generally, just whoever will get the aggro, although I might do the whole team if it is really advisable.
4) To heal my pet if that is more efficient than a re-summon.
Point being that I don't use 02 a whole lot, but it is VERY handy to have at the times that I do use it. If in passing I keep a teammate upright and able to use their powers, all well and good. If they need more than that continually, don't look at me.
Usually, I am unleashing debuffs, holds, immobs, stuns and Stormy Death upon the evildoers. -
[ QUOTE ]
All pets are immune to recharge buffs and debuffs now. You can't affect their recharge rate in any way. This affects /Kins, /Rads, and /Storms the most.
[/ QUOTE ]
To cite a very specific effect, Lightning Storm no longer "inherits" Hasten if it is active when the LS comes out. In the past, the LS would fire more quickly, but no longer. -
There are 3 crashes that show up for me upon occasion. Just when I think they have been fixed for good, the game will crash on me and up pops the window to tell the Devs what I was doing when it crashed.
1) Closing the Mission Selection window. This one happens fairly often, and makes leading teams a real pain when it does.
2) Closing the Global Friends window. This is much more rare, but it will happen a few times and then not happen for weeks.
3) Clicking on a Wentworth Employee. The rarest of the 3, but every couple of months, BOOM.
None of these happen often enough to really slow me down, but are annoying. Anyone else have these experiences? -

"These freaking trains are always broke down."
(This went on for about three months prior to her asking) She proceeded to tell me that was impossible. Then pointed out that I was always trying to enter the exit.
Boy did I feel like an idiot!
[/ QUOTE ]
LOL been there done that and i felt the same way and i had two 50s at that time, never played heros always villains at that point.
[/ QUOTE ]
I struggled with that for about 30 minutes the first time I played a hero. I, too, usually play villains and was used to the "run up into the ferry, and go" routine. I was standing there, trying to run in, click on the doors... some players would pop out of the doors and while the doors were open, I'd try to dash in.
Sure enough after about a half hour I suddenly realize there's another whole SIDE to the station...
[/ QUOTE ]
Of course I tried to enter the Train through the exit and did the obligatory facepalm a bit later. But the Train station got me a second time.
The first computer I played CoH on had a video card that rendered night as pretty much pitch black. This enabled me to do all sorts of things, like discover Grendel's Gulch by falling into it, etc.
But when I levelled on my first hero to ever get to Talos, I asked the team where the trainer was, and was told, "In front of the Train." So I went over to the Train, but it was nighttime, so I could not see very far.
The trainer told me that he could not help me.
Well, there was the green arrow in my meter, but No Soup For Me. "He told me he could not help me," I said. A torrent of disbelief and/or snide remarks ensued. I had to be joking. Did I know where the Train was? and the like. Well, yes, I did and there I was and still could not train with the Trainer. More rude remarks followed.
Of course, at the time I was talking to Bastion (later Citadel.) I never saw Luminary in the dark. -
Oh. My. Goodness.
Don't get me wrong, 02 Boost can save you from teetering over the brink, but it is a weenie heal, more useful for innoculating against End Drain from Carnies and Sappers than team healing. So there is a problem right there--- play an Emp if your Emp-hasis () is restoring Health.
You have the power of the Earth and the Storm! Use it!
Break out the Freezing Rain. Always. No excuse for that. VERY powerful debuffs, and puts baddies on their keisters a lot, too. Afraid of return fire? Stand around the corner under cover when you put it down.
Ditto for Earthquake and Quicksand. Why would you NOT deploy those??
Now if you are going to use Lightning Storm and Tornado, it is very helpful to apply Stone Cages to keep baddies from being thrown about. But the graphics are huge, etc., and some folks do not like to blot out the screen. Okay, I understand that. But in a case where the bad guys are ripping the team apart, flinging the baddies on their head is GREAT idea when the team is about to die. Hit Stalagmites and try to stun them. ANYTHING. But don't just spam 02!
I have played Earth/Storm to 50 on two different servers, and I cannot say enough great things about it. What you have described is akin to a Claws Scrapper using Brawl exclusively.
If you are about to die, and I see it, I have 02 bound to my numberpad, so if you are Team Slot 2, I hit 2 and you will get 02'd, and I hope you live. But I will proceed with my Controlling duties, ie, I am not spamming 02 to keep you upright. I can give you a bandaid, but that is it, hope you make it, because...
I will be too busy bringing out a cloud that goes ZOT! on the bad guys and grinding them to immobilized powder with a tornado in the midst of freezing rain and quicksand. -

I gotta pipe in on this also.
TA/Electric Defender, outside. Even with Short Circuit no mobs around.... STILL DOESN'T LIGHT DANGNABBIT!!!!
*le sigh*
[/ QUOTE ]
I would presume that what is happening there (since you specified "outside," as in "outside of AE") is that Short Circuit is missing the slick.
What I don't know is whether the Oil Slick has any modifier of some sort or has the same chance to be hit as a regular minion, or if this is indeed some sort of bug that periodically interferes with Oil Slick being hit. A lot of folks have indicated the latter.
Inside the AE, of course, no attack of yours or your team will ever hit the Slick because it is bugged and cons "friendly" to you. I hope they fix that pronto, but you know how it is with bugs. -
Well, you know how it goes. It just takes a Fire Blaster who drops Rain of Fire in the Caves of Atta, with ensuing stampede of hundreds of Trolls who wipe the group, to get someone hatin' on the Fire Blasters in general. A few bad Stormers likewise mess things up a lot for everyone, alas.
Freezing Rain should always be welcome at any time by everyone. Snow Storm, once they fixed the Blinding White Out it used to cause several issues back, is likewise great unless a runner trots off to aggro another group, but even THEN, they will come after you in SLOOOOOOW MOOOOOOTION. Both these powers do a number of Very Helpful Things, and any knowledgeable player should welcome them, even if Hurricane, Tornado and Lightning Storm are not appealing to them.
But I could not tell you how to educate folks, short of putting the link to the Wiki in the chat bar. It is like any other debuff--- hopefully they notice things are going down faster, but they might not. Trick Arrow has a bunch of great debuffs, but folks may or may not know all that they do, either. So I dunno how you make folks pay attention. Point them to the Wiki is the best way, I suppose.
The Dancing Kitteh avatar us full of Teh Win, BTW. -
[ QUOTE ]
The same thing happened to me. I thought the lag was the fault of the game servers, when in fact, it was my antivirus program.
[/ QUOTE ]
Which antivirus program was it? -
You will want to put a title on it that describes your trouble, so your command that you type in the chat window could be:
/petition Cant Move in Game--Stuck
Whenever I have used /petition without also supplying a title, I got an error. I finally did figure it out, but use a title with the /petition command.
When the screen comes up, you can describe your problem in more detail.
