This is getting ridiculous...

Lately I've been having some pretty strange problems with CoH. About a month ago, I started getting disconnected with increasing frequency, sometimes because of lag due to graphics (I'm not on the greatest system in the world), and sometimes for no reason at all. Now, I have a character who is stuck in Ouroboros because my system refuses to even load the zone. When I try to log in, the load screen finishes, but all I get is a sky-colored blank screen and extreme lag before the game reverts to the login screen.

Using the Task Manager, I've found that my internet connection is almost non-existent when this happens, and my CPU usage spikes to 100% at the same time. I've tried improving my performance by turning down graphics on another character and defragging my hard drive, but neither helped. That's why I'm asking the much-more-computer-savy-than-I forum users for HELP!

My system info:

Try disabling your virus program. It happened to me at one point that after a patch, my virus program kept scanning everything incoming from the game. It slowed down my system so bad I was ready to quit the game, placed several support tickets about it, and finally reinstalled my OS. I tried the game w/o my virus program installed and it worked fine. Installed the program and game went to crap.

Also if trying to load said toon keeps crashing your game and hence system, put a support ticket in and ask them to move your toon to another zone.

The same thing happened to me. I thought the lag was the fault of the game servers, when in fact, it was my antivirus program.

Which antivirus program was it?

Check out this thread, Common Solutions & Posting Guidelines

Then post the results of these two programs as a new thread in the Technical and Bug forum:

<ul type="square">[*]CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
[*]HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format &gt; Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

AVG

Try Avast!
It has a smaller footprint (uses less memory and CPU) and has a nifty screen saver virus scanner.
It's also free.

And it sounds piratey. That alone makes it awesome.

I second this. Avast found stuff that TrendMicro and Norton couldn't, and got rid of stuff that TrendMicro and Norton couldn't. That alone sold me. YARRR! and haven't looked back!

I thought the lag was bad during a Rikti invasion in Atlas Park on Virtue was pretty bad, then my scheduled virus scan started up. Thankfully, I play in windowed mode so it was easy to click on the "pause scan" option so I could finish the invasion.

I think I will have to try disabeling AVG on my compy to try to see if it aleviates lag also. Thank you all for pointing this out. If this is the problem on my puter... bye-bye AGV.

Now this is potentially useful information...

Does anyone know how Norton reacts to CoX? I run pretty horrendously slow on a mid-range PC, and I always assumed it was server-side. I'm sort of hesitant to shut off Norton, though, because I'm not sure what will happen without it's firewall, or if Vista has it's own firewall.

Norton sucks outright, don't use it. If you're concerned about things getting through your firewall... don't download or click from sites that may be hostile, use Firefox with Adblocker Plus.

I don't know what Vista uses but I'm on XP using Firefox and ABP, have never had any issues of spy/mal/virus ware *except ones which I knew I was in danger of getting when I clicked when I knew better*. I don't have a firewall running, and have pretty much never had a problem.

If you can't tell your firewall not to mess with COH, turn it off. As long as you're avoiding the obvious bad sites, and aren't actively downloading stuff while you're playing... I see no reason to really worry.

Of course, if you DO get hit with something... it can be a pain to remove.

I've got AVG on one system, Avast on the other - they're 95% the same (better video card in one system) and I don't really see a performance/lag/latency difference.

Can't stand Norton, though. Too invasive.

(I also tend to have a toolkit handy just in case something does make it through - malwarebytes, root repeal, combofix for the exceptionally nasty stuff and the like.)

Xp comes with a firewall, pretty sure Vista does as well.

Also, Zonealarm has a pretty good free firewall.

As for Norton, I refuse to use it for two reasons :

Their old "Uninstall me and no more internet for you cause we be sloppy/malicious/stupid" escapade. And may still do so. (couldn't find a better link in a quick search) I know the original issue involved Norton installing a registry key that disabled your connection if Norton wasn't running (and hey, they had a tool to fix it... on their website) but it was not removed by the uninstall program.

And then there was a friend having Norton set to scan network traffic, or something..l. and before he logged into his computer as it booted it, Norton cause me and my three friends to be booted from our War3 game due to lag.

That's my experience, and I wouldn't be surprised if it did cause issues.

Avast seems alright so far, other than the nice sound effects I had to disable...

EDIT : from a blog I found :
[ QUOTE ]

Symantec’s been oft-accused of bloat, creating antivirus software that’s near-impossible to remove cleanly from your computer because it embeds itself so firmly into your registry that uninstalls are the equivalent of removing shrapnel.
