  1. As they said GA, double check to see that your desktop resolution is actually what it says it is. Then in order to change your resolution in game DO NOT select 1920 x 1080. Select 1920 x 1080 (desktop). For some reason selecting your desktop resolution without selecting the one that is linked to match your desktop has caused resolution problems in the past and it may be that the bug has cropped up again.

Sigh, woe is me, you aren't listening etc etc etc... It doesn't matter if heat doesn't sit right with you. If you don't actually check to see if that's the problem then you don't get an opinion. It's the easiest freaking thing in the world considering Nvidia cards software comes with heat monitoring functions.

However I'm guessing you are right and the best way for you to solve this is to just play other games. I'm sorry we couldn't solve your problem Milton. It may sound like sarcasm but it's not. I do love it when the combined knowledge of the people here comes together to fix a problem. And I think we actually did solve your problem in pointing out that your processor couldn't handle Praetoria. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a workaround for it other than staying away from Praetoria or the game.
  3. The dxdiag contains a lot of information that has absolutely no bearing on how well the game plays. CoHHelper runs dxdiag and pulls out all the information that could be useful plus it retrieves the in game settings.

Hijackthis shows all running programs so we can see if there is anything that might be conflicting with the game.

This forum is where players with a lot of computer knowledge and experience with the game help other players. Well, those with a lot of knowledge and those who are just know it alls like me, but I at least try. If you want us to attempt to diagnose the problem then post the logs. If you prefer to only deal with company reps then you can go that route. I was just letting you know what the regulars in this forum would want to see.
  4. That does sound weird being that it's exactly the opposite of expected. However I have a possible answer. Some computers when they become overheated will throttle back on the processor to avoid damage to the system. If your system is one of these and it is overheating under the stress of Praetoria then it would not be surprising to see the cpu load and framerate suddenly drop in the high stress zones. And Praetoria should definitely be putting that ancient celeron under some high stress.

Monitor your GPU and CPU temperatures in the different zones.

It's just a game and it doesn't really bother me, good luck to those that can attend.
Oh I'm not complaining. Like I said I'm mildly annoyed that I didn't get a chance at all the costume codes but whatever. I just realized that no west coaster who worked a 9 to 5 job would be able to attend this event. And it reminded me of all the threads I've seen where the east coasters would complain about no events being available to them. Just thought I would point out to those reading that where as we may have the advantage in live events they have the advantage in online events.

And incidentally going to a convention is no longer a guarantee of a code. I went to PAX this year just like I do every year but because I wasn't able to make it to the offsite meet the devs party I didn't get a code. The non convention event was the only place they gave them out. At least I think it was though they may have given them out at the panel as well which I also missed.

I did get a stuffed pig in a can of beans though. And I have absolutely no idea of it's significance. But hey, it's a stuffed pig in a can of beans and how can you possibly beat that?
  6. Well you still haven't posted the results of your /showfps 1 and /netgraph 1. But I'll tell you something else to do anyway. Turn off FSAA completely.
  7. These are the logs we want to see
    CoHHelper and Hijackthis
  8. Attention East Coasters. When you feel the need to complain that you get shut out of events such as all the conventions that take place on the West coast remember this. West coast inhabitants with a job are pretty much shut out of all in game special events. Since the Paragon Studios have the same work shift as most of us we never get to see these special events. Not the many invasion events Avatea announces such as past incursions of Malta or whoever it was. Not the devs showing up to spawn hoards of the GMs. And not the events which give away expansion packs and costume codes.

For that matter those of us who don't sit at a desk and have the ability to keep the forums and twitter open in the background also get to miss all the twitter based giveaways. In other words if it's business hours for them it's SOL for us.

Of course this is the first time I've gotten irked at this. Not because of the free party pack. I have no problem paying for that. But because this could have been my one chance to get all the costume codes and that is something which I would happily pay for.
  9. I base my characters sex on either the name I come up with or the origin idea I come up with. Or I randomly click on a body type, click on random costume, and see if anything clicks.
  10. Really depends on the archetype and if I'm on a team or not. I don't mean some factions are easier on teams. I mean that some (I'm looking at you CoT) are harder. But the two worst single entities are Malta sappers and Carnie dark ring msitresses.

Also when you say you closed the game do you mean that you hit the exit button or that you just closed down the window? Any time you exit from the game other than the intended way which is backing all the way out to the starting screen and hitting exit or choosing the quit to desktop option the game will check and fix all files before loading again.

Also there is only one download server for the game so when a new update patch comes out downloading slows to a crawl and it's never all that fast to begin with.

Lastly the US and EU versions of the game are identical. The only real difference is that the two executables are named cohupdater.exe and cityofheroes.exe in the US versions and cohupdater.eu.exe and cityofheroes.eu.exe in the EU version.
  12. Hero? Badger, or perhaps Animal Man. Oh wait, TICK! It depends on my mood.

    Villain? Multiple Santa.
  13. After the Cloverfield viral sites I won't bother with the one for Super 8. The one with the pictures was just tremendously underwhelming and the Slusho one made me long for a real Slusho marketing campaign that never materialized.

I'll probably enjoy the movie though. And it hope it features at least one giant lion.

In my opinion there are two slight changes that would make for a big improvement.

First, the pants should be tighter. Right now they look like baggy blue jeans. Second the blue of the costume should be a shade or two darker.

Other than that I'm not hating the look.

No, this is not the issue. UM run perfectly. This is NOT a normal graphics lag problem. Adjusting graphics, as I've stated about 4 times, makes no difference whatsoever. I can turn UM up very high outside of Praetoria,a nd turning all graphics to minimum, make no difference in Praetoria.

My system exceeds the recommend specs. It should work. It did work for free days after my system restart. The hardware runs Praetoria fine. Something odd is happening here, and it's not because my system is inadequate.

I give up. People here are too obssessed with the easy answer and not at all interested in actually reading what I'm saying. Could someone lock this topic please?
Perhaps it's not that people are too obsessed with the easy answer. Perhaps it's that you are too obsessed with your belief that your computer is great.

Since you tell others to pay attention to what you post you should pay attention to what I am about to post.

The reason UM works for you in the Rogue isles and Paragon but not in Praetoria is because even with ultra mode the old game models are still the same. The skins are slightly changed. There is different physics, reflectivity, water handling, shadows etc but the underlying geometry is still the same as when the zone was first created. The difference works like this.

Let's say that Paragon city is a mannequin. The type of mannequin you see in a standard department store. With ultra mode the mannequin has been painted to look more lifelike. Wrinkles have been painted on. Skin imperfections. Hairs on the arms. Shadings of veins running beneath the skin. The mannequin now looks much more lifelike but if you get close to it you can see that it's only a basically human shaped piece of plastic with paint on the surface.

Now let's look at the Praetoria mannequin. This one was molded to match an actual human body. The wrinkles aren't just painted on, they are actual folds in the surface. The tiny hairs are actually on the arms. The veins are actually slightly raised areas on the skin. In other words the underlying structure is much more complex.

And THAT is the reason your system might be lagging in Praetoria but not other zones. I'm not saying it IS the reason but your mind is so closed to anything other than what you started this thread believing that it is pointless trying to help you. You don't listen to what people bring up as a possibility if it clashes with your cherished beliefs. It's no freaking wonder that you walk by yourself.

Now if you actually do want help then get in the game and use the /showfps 1 command and tell us what kind of frame rate you are getting. You may actually see your frame rate climb substantially as you lower the graphics but you might still have the graphics problem. Then use the /netgraph 1 command and tell us what your netgraph looks like. Is it all green? Is there any yellow? Is there any red? Are the lines tall or short?

Stop ordering the doctors around and telling them that you have dengue fever and start listening to their questions and suggestions so they can find out what damn disease you actually do have.
  16. Here is the way to lose weight, and it's the only way to lose weight.

You have to actually want to lose weight and you aren't at that point yet. Go back and read your own posts. You will see a lot of
    "I can't do that because"
"This is the way I do this and I like doing it this way"
"This isn't an important factor because"

You should be posting. "Since I can't walk I'll start riding a recumbent bike." "Since I can't walk I'll start lifting weights." "I like eating one huge meal a day but that is too many calories so I'm GOING to switch to 3 smaller meals."

As long as you keep making excuses why you aren't changing your behavior then that behavior will not change for anything more than a couple weeks, maybe a month at best. It's just like the alcoholic saying "I don't want to be an alcoholic any more but I'm not willing to give up my cold beer on a hot day. And I tried quitting cold turkey but I got the shakes and I'm not going through that again."

Right now you want to lose weight but you don't WANT to lose weight. Until you WANT it there is no advice that anybody can give you that will help.

But since there will be enablers in here "He's had a rough day so he needs that drink to calm down after work. He will only have that one drink." who will get upset with me for simply confronting you with the truth I'll also tell you the best way to lose weight.

Trust me on this. There is absolutely no better way to lose weight in the entire world than weight training. The simple fact is that the part of your body that burns calories is the muscles. Less muscle mass means less calories burned. More muscle mass means more calories burned. Once upon a time I used to go to the gym every day and go through a one hour workout. I wasn't completely ripped. I didn't have huge muscles. I didn't have a six pack. In other words I wasn't a complete exercise fanatic, I just worked out hard and was well toned with good muscle definition. During this period I was eating over 3000 calories per day and maintaining a weight of right around 170 pounds.

Now when doing weight training the goal isn't to do a huge amount of reps with low weight. That isn't weight training, it's an alternative form of cardio. True weight training means you should at most be able to do 10 reps with the weight you are using and that the next two days those muscles should be sore. It is the tearing down of the muscles that burns up the calories when the body works to rebuild them. And the tearing down of the muscles results in the body rebuilding them bigger than they were.

There are tons of exercises you can do without putting any strain on your lower back so that's not an excuse. And you need to get yourself a partner. You do not make it your goal to not slack off. People find it far too easy to make excuses for themselves. Instead you make it your goal to not let your partner slack off and they have to do the same for you.

As I said though, you can only change your behavior when you are ready to change and to not make excuses. You can and will find a partner if you just try. It's like trying to find a team in game. The people who say they can't do it aren't really trying. They are just standing around in Atlas and occasionally broadcasting "Level 45 healer looking for AE team."

Ok, here is a simple explanation. I see your character with the name Johnny Butane. I think it's a cool name so I create myself a character named Johnny Butane. Unfortunately for you I'm also an obnoxious racist jerk. I spend some time in broadcast telling racial jokes, cursing, calling people names, basically behaving like scum of the earth. Then I think to myself. "You know, Johnny Butane isn't such a cool name after all. I think I'll remake this guy as Johnny hot pants."

And then you either get to buy a rename for your character or spend a significant portion of the time you are playing that character getting rejected from teams, getting cursed out, getting ignored and getting petitioned all because of my actions.

I type for a living and am pretty dang fast - but spelling it out, risking typos, fixing typos, etc. every 2 minutes isn't worth it to me in the long run. Seeing all the messages one after another (above) does make it stick out like a sore thumb, but I think taken separately it's not as big a deal.

Important thing to take away is, Don't order your team around (as leader). Asking them politely will get a much better response.
So make yourself a keybind control+p or whatever. Yes I know that it's becoming more and more common but to me it is the text equivalent of caveman speak when talking. In a conversation would you be more likely to say "I'm going to the store to pick up some milk. Is there anything you want me to get you?" or "Me go get milk. What you want?"? After all the second one does save you a couple seconds of time, 12 words and 15 syllables.

And incidentally I agree with the politeness. Asking a team means you intend them to participate. Ordering them around sounds like you think they are incompetent.
  20. Here is a rude answer to your rude response. You have a piece of crap computer. The graphics solution (solution incidentally is the nomenclature applied to a graphics chip intended to allow a computer to manage all the video basics that an average user will encounter while browsing or watching videos) the solution is an intel graphics chip. Intel designs video chips that are at the lower limits of ability and they are notoriously slow to update their drivers to deal with advances in the industry. What I mean by notoriously slow is that it sometimes takes them years to come out with an adaptation to a change in industry standards.

Now up until recently the intel video chips worked fairly well with City of Heroes. This is because back when the game was first released a developer noticed that the intel chip worked poorly with the opengl structure of the game. This mystery developer (nobody knows who it was because the staffing has changed several times since then) kludged together some patchwork mess that managed to allow the intel chip to interact with the opengl system in a reasonable manner. However this patch also caused the opengl code to function less than optimally.

The less than optimal performance of the graphics generator wasn't really a problem till recently because the game itself wasn't doing any spectacular tricks with graphics. Yes it was higher quality graphics than many other MMOs but it still was limited in its complexity. However with the advent of ultra mode which was designed to take advantage of the abilities of the really high end graphics cards the code had to be rewritten in order to make it work as it should have been working all along. Meanwhile despite 6 years having passed intel still hasn't written any update that will let their drivers work correctly with opengl code.

So I guess you're just out of luck unless you use your degree to get a job that pays more than flipping burgers so that you can buy yourself a real computer with a real video card.

Now to see what is really happening with your network connection when you are in game type /netgraph 1
You will start to see a series of lines creep their way across the bottom of the screen from right to left. They will have varying lengths and be either green, yellow or red. You will also see your ping times and I'm sure you can figure out everything that the graph represents.
  21. I would definitely say monitor the temperatures. It's entirely possible to get a video card that is bad when new. Plus if the card has been overheating all along but not reaching the point of total burnout it would be damaging itself each time and lowering the threshold at which it began to fail.

But post the results of CoHHelper and Hijackthis which will give us a better idea of your system and what is possibly going on.

  23. Do you mean you actually contacted support to ask if they got your bugs or is there perhaps some automated site you can log into.

If the latter then I've never heard of it and I'm not surprised it's buggy in itself.

If the former then I have to admit that I myself would tell you that nope, we didn't get any of your bugs. There are thousands of people turning in bugs every single day. For one person to call or mail and ask if their personal bug reports got through is like calling some random volunteer the week after the Jerry Lewis telethon and asking if they got your donation.

pls... I mean please don't do this. Many players, including me absolutely hate text speak when it's not advantageous. If you are in the middle of combat then it's fine but somebody who uses it all the time is usually somebody who lacks the attention span of a 5 year old. No offense Roberto. You are quite literate in the forums but if I teamed with you and you were talking like this I would quit the team at the first opportunity. First opportunity meaning between missions or at the end of a TF. I never abandon a team mid task no matter how bad it gets.

The other advice I have is don't be afraid to kick somebody from the team if they insist on arguing with you or otherwise disrupting the team. The disruption that a person like that brings to a team is worse for the team and its morale than a leader or other team member who isn't perfect. A lot of first time leaders worry that the team will turn on them if they kick somebody off the team. The reality though is that in most cases the rest of the team are wondering why the leader doesn't get rid of the trouble maker.
  25. With the new hard drive, new os install, new ram etc... it really might be your mobo. Hopefully it is, because if not then this one is going to be about impossible to track down. The only other alternative I could think of would be a bad power supply that is putting out unstable voltages.
