Bandwidth and other questions

This weekend I tried to play CoH/CoV nonstop. My gaming experiences have been poor thanks to number of reasons. I need to address these so my experience will be better in the future. Any solutions to any of these problems:

1. How much bandwidth is actually required to make CoH run correctly? For the past few weeks my game play has been laggy. Sunday, I was in SharkIsle on Freedom and was Mapserver-ed to hell. Repetitive Deja Vu is a polite way of saying it. Monday, I had 2MBPS of bandwidth and my game play was awesome.

2. Video recording. I've tried several solutions to record my fun. I tried Xfire, while a nice product that's easy to use(30-50 FPS), it reduced my system performance noticeably during the game. I finally had to turned it off to have a fluid experience. Does the Coh video recording or Fraps do recording without noticeable system degradation? How many frames can I record per second without noticeable degradation, 5 or 10 FPS maybe?

3. Video Setting, can I get a recommendation on what settings I can turn down in the options menu to enhance the fluidness of the game play. I tried to turned down to low water reflections but it didn't seem to do anything. I even turned them off for awhile so the water was black when I played. There are so many settings in the options menu.

4. I attempted a Hami Raid Sunday night in the Abyss and has so many people in the zone that the zone was nothing but lag. We aborted the raid and went to other places. I took a lot of flak from users for my decision. How many users can be in 1 zone at time? We had about 50.

There are very few things that you can do to increase your bandwidth. Besides paying whatever company you get your internet from more money, you will only ever have so much bandwidth.

However, that is NOT the only place that lag comes from. Your computer's RAM and video card can be big factors in what you're seeing, too. As well as your CPU and other basic components. You may want to post your computer's specs over in the Tech Issues and Bugs forum, to see what they can do for you.

Also, you are on the busiest server. If you moved to a less busy server, you'd likely be able to play with few problems, if any at all.

1) No idea. Are you sure it is network lag (ping) or graphics lag (FPS)? I like to have /netgraph 1 and /showfps 1 running so I can keep an eye on whether the lag is network or graphics.

Freedom is one of the busier servers; I'd expect more lag there. GR has really increased the number of people on and I've seen Freedom red most nights.*

2) I have never tried Fraps on CoX, so I can't comment. Never noticed it dropping my FPS in another game though. I did used to save to another hard drive, not the game one.

3) I started off with this thread. A quick glance at post one here should enable you to decide whether your card is low/med/good/whoa level.

Also this thread and this thread give good explanations of each setting with pictures.

I can give you a list of my settings but if your card is much better/worse then it won't really help you.

4) 50 people is max per zone. You will get lag on Raids; Hami or Mothership. You just WILL. Everyone can try and minimize it by using costumes without moving parts, lowering their graphics settings to minimum (and I never run with 50k particles but about 10k) but you ARE going to lag. Do what you can to minimize it and if it still isn't playable for you, you know not to join another one. First thing I do when I hit the meet point for a raid is drop my gfx settings to min. Every time.

Let me address some of your replies:

1. When I first got CoH back in Febraury up to June, my gaming experiences were fantastic. I was so happy. I quit and came back in August and the experience has been significantly less appealing. Drops, MapServers, lag is part of every experience now. I have not changed computers. Yesterday, I had a rare moment and it was directly related to bandwidth. I started measuring it daily/hourly to attempt to troubleshoot my problem.

I have no comment at this time on 2&3.

4. The hami raid we have had other issues I'm sure. Some were heroes and some where villains. I won't do a raid again knowing that 50 is the limit. I just don't want to come online and lose two hours wading through lag. it's just not worth. I need my time online to be gainful. Also, how do you tell other to lower there video settings? Can CoH post a sign when you enter the zone or something? The Hami raid was a zoo just trying to recruit while everyone is asking me when are we going to start. I would have never done if I had read this comment earlier. I'll stick to 8 person missions for now.

Please post the results of these two programs:

  • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
  • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.
This will help us help you find out if there's anything in your system or software impeding game performance.

My question isn't about getting more bandwidth. I solved that problem. I'm asking this question, how much bandwidth does the CoH client require to provide a fluid user experience? I've heard between 512k-1MB. I need a technical answer for this. I'm not looking for opinions. I need a developer response.

In zone/mission bandwidth is well under 10Kbytes/sec except during mosh pit conditions like zombie/rikti raids where there are a large crowd of players and critters bashing it out.

This is a forum to ask questions of other players. You are unlikely to get a dev response here. If you want one from them, send them a PM.

However, we have had players on dial-up for years, so that's the minimum that you need. Anything more than that just speeds it up a bit.

While I understand the distinction between the questions you're asking, you are not likely to get a dev response here. This is the forum where players help players.

If you want a dev perspective on your question, then your best bet is to PM one of them ... You may eventually get an answer, but don't hold your breath in the meantime.

I play on Freedom. I was getting map-server issues all weekend also. It wasn't just you. And it wasn't just me. Every team I was on had people saying the same thing. It was even difficult maintaining a full team with so many people quitting after encountering so much lag.

Since it wasn't an individual person with this problem, I suspect it was server related, and can't be fixed on your end.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

Since it wasn't an individual person with this problem, I suspect it was server related, and can't be fixed on your end.
I noticed over the weekend, that a lot of the users on US servers are playing from other regions. All weekend long I kept meeting EU players who claimed they "bought" the US editions. I know this has to have an effect.

No more so than if the same number of Americans bought the game and were playing it.

Do you know what network latency is?

I have no clue whatsoever about "client-server" architecture :-) Why don't you share your knowledge on the subject. I'd like to hear what you know about client server though. What tier is this "client-server" application built on? Explain to me to what the application and database servers are in use? I learned a lot of things at Harvard but absolutely nothing about Client Server. I envy guys like you who "claim" to know it all.

I assume that sarcasm and insulting people were taught as the best way to get questions answered at "Harvard?"

Just in case someone who is actually interested in learning something reads this thread, CoX is a client-server application, which means that your client gets data from NCSoft's server. It's irrelevant where other people in the game are logging in from, because you never connect to their machines directly. Therefore, the only network latency at issue is your own.

Just something I know from doing "network operations" for a "living."

Tell me, OP - how do *you* think these players from outside the US got access to the game? You appear to be implying something other than a purchase by them.

I can assure you that we have players from all over the globe (EU, including the UK and Bulgaria, Oceania, including Australia & NZ), all of whom purchased the game, who do not adversely affect the game's performance any more than those from Atlanta, GA, or Cambridge, MA.

"You" would think that "someone" who was "educated" at Harvard would "understand" the appropriate "use" of "quotation marks" and what "scare quotes" are and "why" they should only be "used" when truly appropriate.*

In fact, there's a "blog" dedicated to unnecessary and inappropriate quotation marks. Still, i love the term "scare quotes".

*Okay, this is a lie. A fairly common degree from institutions like Harvard is the MBA, and the one thing i've learned from reading many memos and emails from CEOs and other high-ranking executives is that either literary proficiency isn't a part of the MBA curriculum, or that it's considered useless in the real world and forgotten or ignored within months of matriculating. Which worked much better several decades ago when almost everything was dictated to an assistant or rewritten by a secretary before being sent out.

1) There are more people here now than February or June. (And you mis-spelt February.)

You are on a popular server with an increased population since you last played. Check the server lights. Freedom is often red now; previously it was yellow at most. It doesn't matter you have the same machine; the SERVER is more busy.

A subsequent post where you blame non-USA players is absolute rubbish. It doesn't matter where players log in from, it is the NUMBER of players logging in. The only difference is those players will be getting a high ping at the best of times because the information has to travel further. That doesn't touch your game; just theirs. It is perfectly possible for non-US players to buy the US version of the game. Many do because despite the time differences, the population is higher than the alternatives.

4) Most sensible Hami/Mothership Raid leaders will call for non-fancy costumes. By removing capes/auras etc, the amount of work carried out by everyone's machines is less. So that helps everyone on the Raid. You turning down your graphics to minimum helps YOU and only YOU.

Hijack This and CoX Helper logs are best posted in the Technical Forums. Devs won't respond to the 'Player Questions' Forum. If you want a response from a Dev, PM them.

I don't care which Uni you went to rude is rude.

One thing I learnt on Forum Boards is you would be amazed by the experiences of members. Most of the time you will never know because we have no need to sign our posts with our educational/work details because most of the time it isn't relevant and doing so just looks arrogant.

Here is a rude answer to your rude response. You have a piece of crap computer. The graphics solution (solution incidentally is the nomenclature applied to a graphics chip intended to allow a computer to manage all the video basics that an average user will encounter while browsing or watching videos) the solution is an intel graphics chip. Intel designs video chips that are at the lower limits of ability and they are notoriously slow to update their drivers to deal with advances in the industry. What I mean by notoriously slow is that it sometimes takes them years to come out with an adaptation to a change in industry standards.

Now up until recently the intel video chips worked fairly well with City of Heroes. This is because back when the game was first released a developer noticed that the intel chip worked poorly with the opengl structure of the game. This mystery developer (nobody knows who it was because the staffing has changed several times since then) kludged together some patchwork mess that managed to allow the intel chip to interact with the opengl system in a reasonable manner. However this patch also caused the opengl code to function less than optimally.

The less than optimal performance of the graphics generator wasn't really a problem till recently because the game itself wasn't doing any spectacular tricks with graphics. Yes it was higher quality graphics than many other MMOs but it still was limited in its complexity. However with the advent of ultra mode which was designed to take advantage of the abilities of the really high end graphics cards the code had to be rewritten in order to make it work as it should have been working all along. Meanwhile despite 6 years having passed intel still hasn't written any update that will let their drivers work correctly with opengl code.

So I guess you're just out of luck unless you use your degree to get a job that pays more than flipping burgers so that you can buy yourself a real computer with a real video card.

Now to see what is really happening with your network connection when you are in game type /netgraph 1
You will start to see a series of lines creep their way across the bottom of the screen from right to left. They will have varying lengths and be either green, yellow or red. You will also see your ping times and I'm sure you can figure out everything that the graph represents.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
