Praetoria unplayable laggy

Anytime I log into Praetoria, the game is laggy to the point of being unplayable, but blue or redside is absolutely fine. The graphic basically stutter every couple of seconds between a series of still images, no real animationg. There are other strange graphical glitches too, but those occur in all areas, and go away when I move the graphics slider back and forth.

The Praetoria problem, though doesn't go away. At first I thought it was just because of all the people trying out Praetoria, but no one else is having lag troubles at the same time as I am.

Can you provide us with the necessary CoH Helper and Hijack This logs?

See the "Asking for help" link in my sig if you're unsure how to do this.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I too am suffering from unplayable lag. The odd thing is it is intermittent. If i wait 5-10 minutes I might be able to play normal for 1 or 2. My computer isn't horrible or any but just in case it is me, I'll post my info.

Here is what HiJack This has to say.... I definately see some removable junk LOL

Also note, I'm updating graphics drivers now. My current ones are fairly new, but there's a new set, so we'll see if that helps any.

Okay first off. Celeron. Okay for desktop productivity. Not so great for gaming. The amount of L2 cache is less than a quarter of what you'd find on a dual-core C2D or i5. This means that the system is going to be falling back to system memory (RAM) of which you're already using a half just to keep your OS going, and then disk (which is several orders of magnitude slower than system memory).

This means that the CPU gets to spend a lot of times figuratively twiddling it's thumbs.

Second, the 9400. This is the lower-end cards of nVidia's 9*** series.

Praetoria is optimized for Ultra Mode and not all the measures taken to make sure it "degrades" gracefully at lower settings insure that you are going to gain performance back.

Also, I notice a couple performance suckers still active. Anisotropic filtering is still up fairly high (4x), shadows are still on (albeit stencil), and your particle effects are still set to high (50K).

You MAY benefit a little from upgrading your drivers (you can get the current 258.96 drivers). But I don't expect spectacular results from them.

About the only other thing I could recommend would be to start turning other things off (Chrome, Skype, etc).

Intermittent lag of the sort you're describing is most frequently the result of heat problems. Many modern components will drop back to slower modes if they start overheating, causing exactly the behavior you describe.

Carefully check your intake screens, fans, and heat sinks for clogging and clean them; graphics cards with plastic covers are notorious for building up gunk under the cover where you can't see it that drastically reduces their cooling capability. Make sure wires haven't gotten in the way of your fans, and that they can turn freely. Look at your airflow layout; is your GPU sucking already hot air from after the CPU heatsink, or vice versa?

Reducing your graphics settings (particularly the demanding shadow settings) and cleaning up other things that may be running in the background may help. You can try temporary over-cooling measures (opening the side of the case and pointing a box fan at it, etc.) to see if that helps the situation.

Considering my taste in gaming, Celeron is just fine for me normally.

As for the settings, changing them makes no difference, as I already stated. Turning everything to minimal makes no difference. None. I can even play Ultra Mode in red the blue zones, albeit with some slight graphics slowing.

I've been meaning to double my ram anyways, so I'll probably go ahead and do that. As for the rest, my problem's still not making sense at all. If it was simply a question of RAM and vid cards, turning the settings ti minimal should at least make a difference, not none at all.

I should emphasize that I like never go to any type of support because I can diagnose and solve most errors myself, so it's not likely to be anything either simple or common.

What you have is sort of a vicious combination of a couple issues. CPU is okay but not stellar. GPU is adequate, but not really the best choice. Memory is low, forcing you to swap to disk more. On top of that, you're playing in a zone that was DESIGNED for Ultra mode and doesn't always degrade in ways that increase performance dramatically.

Okay, hopefully someone actually helpful who actually reads what I am saying will replay this time.

Anyhow, an update. After downloading the latest drivers, things got much, much worse, and I'm not the only one to have bad experiences with those drivers. I finally upgraded my computer, doubled the ram, and get a nice NVidia 460 card, but it made no difference. The game now froze as soon as I logged into a server, except after I removed it from Zone Alarms list and only the first time. It crashed trying to load Praetoria regardless.

Anyhow, I had other computer glitches, so I just opted to reinstall Windows completely on Saturday. And It worked. I avoid ZoneAlarm this time and installed only the latest released beta drivers. The game ran fine, Praetoria ran fine, and all was well.

Until tonight. Praetoria is once again unplayably laggy. Safe mode makes no difference, and it's not just the 3d graphics, anything I do is delayed by a few seconds, even dragging windows or selecting options in any menus. I tried System Restore to a time before the problem, and that made no difference either. Something weird is happening here. Redside and Blueside work beautifully even with high Ultramode settings and have no lagging whatsoever.

Now for updated data. From Hijackthis:

CohHelper won't run at all for some reason. I'm positive it's unrelated. I should be able to get it after a system reboot.

Yeah, being a **** to the only person who was helping you probably wasn't the smartest decision you've made today.

I doubt you're going to resolve your issue anymore.

Sucks to be you.

You need to buy a super expensive computer even though that obviously isn't the problem for reasons that have already been explained to me and even though the computer exceeds both the recommended and minimum specs is not being helpful.

EDIT: Look I'm sorry, but I'm upset and I'm frustrated. This problem just makes no sense whatsoever and the only person to actually try to help had nothing really useful to say. That's probably because everyone else is just stumped, but it still does for my stated frustration. So far, I've gotten a bad impression of this particular forum, but I'm hoping someone will help me change that impression.

Anyway, if you have any ideas, just let me know.

This forum is just gamers helping gamers, nothing more and nothing less. If you don't find the input you've received here to be helpful...well...that's that. Have you filed a support ticket?

I will if nothing turns up here soon. Wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas first.

Some notes:
* Your audio drivers seem seriously out of date; this is probably not the cause of your problems, but it's a good idea to fix. Wonky audio has in the past caused some unusual slowdowns, particularly if you do anything audio-related other than CoH (background music, Vent or Teamspeak, etc.).

* It sounds like your problem is local, because things like window-moving shouldn't be affected by network lag. You may want to run
/netgraph 1
and keep an eye on the output, however; it should look like a neatly-trimmed short green lawn most of the time. If you have thick blocks of green, or any other color, that's a potential concern.

* Note, however, that Praetoria has been pretty busy this weekend. People in our group on Labor Day were complaining about "rubberband lag" in the outdoor Praetoria zones in particular (e.g. "I've run past this fountain four times already; it's nice but not that nice!"). For me at least, this was a sprinkling of thin red vertical lines in the usual lawn.

* It's almost certain that the much higher level of Ultra-designed features (lots of reflective surfaces, water features, etc.) in Praetoria is causing your card to work harder. This may be causing heat-related issues or exposing some other problem that's normally not an issue. I'd suggest getting an appropriate temperature-monitoring utility and running windowed so you can keep an eye on both CPU and GPU temps, see if either are noticeably higher when you're seeing the problems. Depending on your computer, the upgrades could be putting more power or thermal stress on the system than previously. (I'm assuming that you carefully made sure your power supply was capable of handling your upgrade first; if not, that's also a concern.)

* For most cards, the most costly part of Ultra Mode is the shadows. Kicking the shadows all the way up can more than halve your frame rate in some cases. Experiment with different settings and see if they have any effect; you may want to have
/showfps 1
running to get a clearer idea of what is happening.

* Is the behavior different on different servers? On indoor vs. outdoor missions? Solo vs. teamed? In the presence of certain special effects (e.g. a lot of fire)? Is the slowdown even, predictably bursty, or chaotically bursty?

Ultimately, this forum is users voluntarily trying to help other users; while it can sometimes be frustrating to have a problem, there's a limit to what we can do.

It's motherboard-integrated sound. In any case, I'm pretty sure it's not the problem although I wouldn't mind updating. I'm not really sure what drivers I'd need though.

That's my conclusion as well, although I might try the program you mentioned.

I experienced the rubber-banding as well during the 3 days that Praetoria was working perfectly. This is nothing like normal lag. Sever population does not make a difference though.

The fact, that two different cards performed exactly the same even though the newest one is several times more powerful pretty much eliminates that idea.

Changing graphics settings makes no difference. Using Safe Mode makes no difference. The stuttering effect is precisely timed and the time between changes in anything is always the same. You could set a clock to it, it's so precise. The fps command is one I will try, though. The results could be interesting.

The effect is so bad it's basically unplayable. I have, however, seen it in variety of different environments, insides and out. As I said, it's like clockwork and never varies.

That goes without saying. Whatever we can figure out here would be good though. I've eliminated most of the things that makes sense though.

experience some loss of fps myself, I haven't rubberbanded too much to where it was irritating, but I've had some real bad loss of fps in certain maps in Praetoria, mostly the new lab maps.

If you have not done so already, make sure your copy of windows is up to date, someone had a similar problem and fixed it by updating their system and it hasn't returned thus far. As far as your graphics settings, if you could send me a message with your CoH graphics settings, When GR rogue came out I had trouble even making it past the load screen or 5-8fps until I tweaked my settings a bit.

A loss of fps isn't the problem here. That wouldn't produce clockwork like eveness in the problem reguardless of settings or graphics card. I already posted my settings in the cohhelper info, but that doesn't matter, as Safe Mode makes no difference at all.

Again, my graphics work so well everywhere else, that a mere loss of fps would be no big deal at all.

And Windows updates is not the problem here either. I would be tempted to consider it the potential problem, since the fresh Windows install was problem free and the old one not, but Restore does not help, and it should in case of a bad Windows update.

Anyhow, I did mention most of this above. I would appreciate if you read the information in post #9 above before replying; it would save me from having to repeat the same things over and over again. If it were something simple like graphics settings or updates I wouldn't even be here. As a matter of fact, this is the first time I have ever posted in a help form for any hardware or software for any reason. I have always been able to solve any problem myself, which is perhaps what makes this so frustrating.

Anyhow, unless someone else has some genius idea soon, I'll have to do the whole trouble ticket thing, which is entirely foreign to my normal independance. If this were any other game, I'd have just dumped it long ago. Oh well.

unfortunatly the answer to your problem is that your comptuer is not adapt to running this game in any zone in preatorea. I have a quad core with 8 gigs of ram and the ATI equivilant of your video card and I still have to turn off all of the UM features as well as many leagacy video features.

Sorry if the answer is not the one you are looking for.

My recomendations

Screen/UI Resolution: lower than what you have it at currently.
3d Resolution Scalling: drop this if you can't the above.
Refresh rate: na
Gama: na
FSAA: Off

UM Ooptions
Environment Reflections: Disabled
Water Effects: none
Shadow Quality: disabled
Advanced Occlusion Settings: disabled
Ambient Occlusion: Off

Particle Physics Quality: None (this uses more of your CPU if you don't have a physics card)
World Texture Quality: low
Character Texture Quality Low
World Detail: 50 - 75%
character detail : 50-75%
Max Particle COunt: 35K - 75K
Vertical sync: na
Mouse cursors: na
Use Geo Buffers: na
Anisotropic filtering: off
Texture Crispness: smother
Shader Quality: either low option or medium
Depth of Field effects: disabled
Bloom Effects: none
Desaturation Effects: na

even with that, you still have lag, sorry there isnt' much your going to be able to do till you can afford new hardware

Sigh. Will people actually start reading what I'm posting?

No, this is not the issue. UM run perfectly. This is NOT a normal graphics lag problem. Adjusting graphics, as I've stated about 4 times, makes no difference whatsoever. I can turn UM up very high outside of Praetoria,a nd turning all graphics to minimum, make no difference in Praetoria.

My system exceeds the recommend specs. It should work. It did work for free days after my system restart. The hardware runs Praetoria fine. Something odd is happening here, and it's not because my system is inadequate.

I give up. People here are too obssessed with the easy answer and not at all interested in actually reading what I'm saying. Could someone lock this topic please?

I appreciate the fact that you're genuinely trying here. I'll look into the audio updates, but I'm positive that's no the issue. Then again, nothing that makes sense is, so it's worth a shot.

It's already persisted through a few server maintenances already, so I don't expect any help there.

Now while I'm not the most technical person in the world, let's see if this helps...

While you claim your rig does fine for what gaming you do, the Celeron series of Intel CPUs are not intended for any kind of serious gaming. They just don't have the overall computational ability to handle most PC gaming.
From what you've described, it looks like the CPU (not the GPU) is getting overworked trying to handle Praetoria.

Having relooked at your listings, I wouldn't be surprised if your pushing your Motherboard as well. ECS boards aren't the best, IMHO.

Best thing I would suggest is to eventually go for a new CPU/MB/Memory package. Maybe upgrade your power supply as well. Your Vid card should be more than enough to last you for a few years.

Thank you for the time...
