Vid card overheating?
I'd tend to agree with your initial assessment - that does sond like overheating problems with the graphics card.
Are you overclocking the card - if so edge it back a bit.
You could also try reducing the temperature thresholds for each fan speed setting so that it is better cooled - or in the extreme case just set the fan to 100% at all settings but that will be a lot more noisy.
Also check the card fan isn't clogged with dust and that it is being fed with cold air - if you are blowing air past the CPU cooler or disk drives towards it it will have a lot more work to do to cool the card properly.
Oh and make sure the pc suppliers removed the clear plastic protective film from the card before sending it out!

and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant
pop the side off the case and make sure the fan is running on the video card.
when you say new pc, did you buy it from some where or did you assemble it? if you assembled it, make sure there isn't any wiring in the way of any fans, also double check to make sure they are plugged in as well.
where do you have this pc sitting? under/on top of the desk? in a cabinet large enough to hold said pc? are your exhaust fans blowing and your intake fans sucking?
You can download GPU-Z and look at how fast the fans are running, how fast the card is running, and see the temps.
That said it may actually be one of two (or both) things:
vbios
bad thermal paste job on the GPU
I recently could not play missions because the ATI 5800 series in my ASUS G73 would overheat and shut down the system. After reading the nightmares of the ASUS RMA system I was overjoyed to see a beta vbios posted and then after applying it things were great.
This thread offered up the fix for the ASUS G73 and others expand on the trouble:

Ever since applying the non-overclocked vbios my GPU runs at 71 C and kicks up depending on how much churning it is doing but have managed to up the settings in CoH and play several missions without any issues.
YMMV
I would definitely say monitor the temperatures. It's entirely possible to get a video card that is bad when new. Plus if the card has been overheating all along but not reaching the point of total burnout it would be damaging itself each time and lowering the threshold at which it began to fail.
But post the results of CoHHelper and Hijackthis which will give us a better idea of your system and what is possibly going on.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Recently (as in, ever since going rogue was released) I can only play CoH/CoV for a couple hours. After that ammount of time (aproximately) textures are replaced by random ones. Suddenly, fire has a power boost logo as its texture. Everything is *****. I try to fight through it to get to a safe spot to relog but wind up just crashing.
My first thoughts are maybe my video card was overheating, but my graphics are turned to performance and this is a brand new computer I just got less than a month ago. The temperature in this room is always low and my tower is well cooled.
I have an Radeon HD 5770 1024mb video card, 8 gb of DDR3 ram and a 1tb harddrive running on windows 7 (64bit).
I have tried updating my drivers and am beginning to think either the drivers are bad.. Or this is some sort of conflict elsewhere. Some outside help would be appreciated, I am baffled.
