I didn't quite get a "be Posi's lackey" vibe from just this video.
But then again they do say absolute power corrupts absolutely - maybe it's only a matter of time.
  2. Why on earth would the Devs waste time with some kind of HDMI GUI when you could just mess around with your window scales?

    Sooo....Coyotes.

It's funny that several people in this thread have implied (in one way or another) that the Coyote travel power is either too fast and/or can jump too high.

Several weeks ago when this power was first introduced on the beta server it ran a good deal slower and jumped much less high. It was -almost- like a real coyote in terms of its abilities. Thing is a bunch of people started whining that it "sucked" that way as a travel power and that they would never buy it because they considered it to be the "worst" travel power like that.

I suppose this is just yet another example of how the Devs will never be able to please everyone.
  4. Did you ever think some people use "toon" precisely because its use annoys some people?

Incarnate powers does not a good player/team make.
This is why I don't see allowing iPowers during Mo badge attempts being as bad as the "-1 difficulty" exploit Dechs Kaison was talking about.

Running a MO attempt where all the critters are -1 to the team makes the entire run relatively simple regardless of player skill. It's pretty clear the Devs never intended to allow getting Master badges be -that- easy. On the other hand even if you're allowed to use iPowers during such a run you still have to have everyone have them all slotted up and know how to use them effectively. As you say merely having iPowers does not guarantee success.

The other thing to consider is that iPowers have the obvious potential to make EVERY older TF/SF/Trial easier to finish, not just Mo runs. Again I understand that Dechs Kaison wanted to stop iPowers from making Mo runs too trivial, but that doesn't do anything to "fix" having a team be overpowered to do any older content like that. That problem still exists even if you force people to use a "no iPowers" option during Mo runs.

Yeah technically these new costume sets are purchasable already. You may not like how expensive they are if you haven't been a subscribed player for many years, but that's not Paragon Studios' fault.

Well for me I don't really think the Devs ought to be actively trying to make "older badges easier to earn" just for the sake of making them easier.

On the other hand I do think they need to fix things that are obviously broken. For the classic example of that the original one billion HP requirement for Empath was always an absolute joke from Day One and even though I was masochistic enough to earn it back when it was that hard I'm glad the Devs finally saw the error of their ways on that one.

I could certainly argue that there have been other badges which have been made easier (directly or indirectly) that probably didn't need to be lowered as much as obvious ones like Empath. But in the long run I'd rather have some questionable changes like that than no changes at all. *shrugs*

I'm fairly sure I understood what you were saying. I think the problem here is that you didn't quite understand why I think your suggestion doesn't make much sense here. Let me try to explain my reasoning again.

I never thought you wanted to take any badges away from anyone. That would be very bad. My point is that it doesn't really make sense to INCREASE the requirement for getting those Mo badges by requiring a "no iPowers" option NOW after there's already been a period of time of well over a year where people could have gotten those badges while using iPowers. How does it make my MoSTF (which I earned years ago without iPowers) any better if there still could have been someone who earned it six months ago with iPowers? The damage has already been done.

One more time I think your suggestion might have had some validity if they had imposed a "no iPowers" requirement on those badges back when Issue 19 launched so that iPowers would have NEVER been a factor in earning those badges. As it is now far too much time has passed where people could have earned many of those badges using iPowers. There's no point trying to "fix" the problem now.

I see where you're trying to equate using iPowers to get those badges being as bad as the "-1 difficulty" exploit. I just don't think you can stretch it far enough to suggest the fundamental idea that using iPowers in this situation is some kind of exploit towards getting those badges. I think the main difference here is that the Devs never wanted us to be able to do a Mo badge run at -1 difficulty whereas I actually don't think they mind that iPowers have made those older badges easier.

The problem with clinging to the idea that "robots will only ever be able to make pre-programmed responses" is that robots today are already solving real world problems based dynamic situations that are not strictly scripted for them.

For example the BigDog robot can already self-correct its balance when randomly kicked. It does with with sensors and reactions that more or less work the same way they do in live creatures. The robot is not "pre-programmed" with scripted movements to recover anymore than you or I are pre-programmed to recover from being pushed off-balance by someone else.

There will come a time when artificial devices will be able to perform so many of the same kinds of interactions that we do (both physical and cognitive) that the lines between what is "alive" and what isn't will be blurred beyond recognition. What makes me a "live person" and a robot a "dead thing"? That's easy to determine today in 2012. But in the future that likely won't be so clear.

Perhaps people like GG simply fear what it would mean to have to question things like that, and to be honest that kind of thing is a little scary to think about in general. But I'd prefer to attempt to adapt to what's coming rather than to stubbornly pretend it could never happen in any form or fashion and then be caught off-guard by it.

    Thanks for the replies anyway.
When you've played long enough you subconsciously learn the timing on things well enough regardless.

As far as the HeroStats on Mac vs PC thing goes even the people like me who have access to it on PCs didn't have it for the first few years this game existed. To this day, almost 8 years later, I don't really use HeroStats to any regular degree myself. *shrugs*

It's like you were trying to make a case for apple juice by equating it to other good juices to drink like orange juice, grape juice and dog slobber juice... Let's just say dog slobber juice is -not- a good juice to mention when you want people to like your apple juice.
  14. One of the easiest things to "mod" in this game (other than the maps covered by things like Vidiotmaps) would be costume items, especially considering there have already been many modded items created over the years.

The current limitation with modded costume items is that the system only lets you modify how the items look to you on your client. What would have to be developed is some kind of standardized systematic way for people to submit their mods directly to Paragon Studios so they could be verified and validated for use by the general game.

The two big roadblocks to this (that would affect any kind of player submissions, not just costume items) is that Paragon Studios would have to hire a dedicated staff to handle the submissions and there would probably be some questions as to IP ownerships involved. Basically these both represent money and manpower Paragon Studios does not seem willing to apply for this.

Perhaps now that the Paragon Market exists they might be more willing to consider some kind of player submitted content that could be sold somehow as optional content. Still I would not hold my breath for this happening anytime soon.
  15. I don't have any problem with having a new optional "no iPowers" setting for TF/SFs. But this idea that all the original Mo badges should have this requirement retroactively applied to any future attempts is unreasonable for several reasons.

First of all there has already been a period of over a year where people could have been earning any of the Mo badges with the aid of incarnate powers. The cat is essentially out of the bag on this one. Perhaps if a "no iPowers" option was introduced with Issue 19 and that requirement was applied to the old Mo badges from the very beginning this would make sense. To do it now would be basically pointless.

Also the idea that iPowers have made the Mo badges "cheaper" or less impressive is also a concept that has long set sail in this game in general. If necessary I could list literally dozens of badges which over time have become much easier to earn than they were at first. Because I earned virtually every badge I have the "hard" way (for instance I earned Empath back when you needed 1 billion HP for it and Leader back when you needed 2 billion INF for it) I can absolutely sympathize with the idea that it's annoying that many of my most impressive badges have been almost trivialized. Despite that there's really no way to whine or complain about it since many of the nerfings were arguably necessary for the good of the game. Case in point a billion HP Empath was an absolute joke and always was.

Basically the idea of "asterisking" old badges might seem appealing to some, but it's hardly practical or even possible at this point.
  16. They already have the next costume set that'll "replace" Celestial Armor out on the Beta server now. Thing is it looks like they are toying with the idea of just adding 3 new slots next to the Celestial Armor ones so it's not all together certain yet if the new set will strictly replace Celestial Armor or not.

As for a "Tier 10" I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon if ever.

Like Slazenger said I think HeroStats is going to be your answer here. It's a third party utility that's been well established in the community for years and will give you all sorts of "number" information like that.

Just as a FYI the original mindset of the game was always geared toward being very "non-numbers" oriented. The original lead designer of the game had this weird notion that most players not only didn't want exact info like you're talking about but that we did not need it at all. While it's technically true that you can in fact easily play without exact info like this it's annoying to some people that timers like you're talking about weren't part of the original game.

Over the years the Devs of this game have changed their minds on this have have started allowing us to see much more hard numerical data than we used to get. The people who created HeroStats did much to fill the gap and now the Devs basically accept it as almost a default part of the game for those people who want to use it.

P.S. Just in case you aren't aware the Paragonwiki has become the default user's manual for the game. It's got pretty much everything you'll want to know.
  20. It's seems as though something in your saved costume file is preventing you from seeing the bolero. Because it was saved back before you had the Magic Pack there may be something in the file that's conflicting. Unfortunately the costume creator is constantly evolving and I have noticed that a number of older save files have become outdated with elements that no longer match the names or configuration of the latest costume items present in the creator.

The best thing I think you could try is to load your saved costume file then systematically reset parts back to default until the bolero becomes visible again. As Doctor Roswell said some items will on purpose conflict with other items and the bolero may be suffering from that in your case. Eventually you should be able to get the items you want and when you do I would re-save a new costume file and discard the original one. Like I said depending on what updates happen to the system you may find that you'll have to update a few save files accordingly over time.

It's not a perfect system, but it still provides many options despite its rough edges.
    Hope that helps.

    1) Well the latest work in astrophysics already strongly supports the idea that we live in a "m-brane based multiverse" so it could be argued that "alternate dimensions" already exist.

    2) Science has also managed to "transport" the quantum spin of an atom across an empty space so we technically already have "transporter beams". I will admit that having transporters that could actually transport a human from one place to another is still strictly within the realm of sci-fi, but we've already taken the first baby step towards this being a real life technology.

    3) Warp drives are likely hundreds (if not thousands) of years away and time travel may never happen. But then again 108 years ago the idea of powered flight was also a well accepted "impossibility" so I'd hardly assume warp drives will never happen.

    4) This leaves the question of when "living robots" will happen. Again I don't expect them today or tomorrow, but this strange idea of yours that they'll -never- happen is hardly reasonable in the least.

I'll freely admit that a 100% inorganic sentient lifeform will probably take longer, but as Innovator said we'll have C-3PO-like androids running around well before true AI exists. The real life C-3POs we create will be a stepping stone towards that final goal.

A memory leak is caused by the allocation of an "object" in the client software that is never freed in order for the memory to be used for other things. These objects may describe things such as the special effects that are tossed around in a trial, or the characters appearing on your screen, the pieces of the costumes they're wearing, and so on. (Occasionally drivers do cause memory leaks, but wasn't the case this time around.)

If even a few of those memory objects describing the thousands of explosions occurring in a trial are not properly freed, over time these "lost" objects will pile up and your computer will simply run out of memory. It will take longer for a computer with more memory to crash, but since RAM is finite, any computer running a program with a memory leak will eventually crash if you run that program long enough.

If the return value of a failed memory allocation is not properly checked, any kind of error can occur, from a corrupt pigg warning, to a bad instruction trap, to a glitched display, to an audio loop, to a well-controlled crash that solicits a question about what you were doing, to a direct and immediate exit to Windows with no warning whatsoever.

I was experiencing a wide variety of crashes in Lambdas and BAFs after one or two runs, with no clue as to why they were happening. I guessed memory leaks were behind it, but didn't know. After a few months and a few patches the crashes became less frequent and were no longer random, but were limited either to corrupt pigg file crashes (i.e., memory leaks) or explicit out of memory crashes. After another couple of patches the crashes stopped.

I haven't experienced a crash in a couple of months now, and I changed absolutely nothing about my PC: same amount of memory (4 gig), same drivers, same video card.

A month or so after the crashes stopped one of the devs asked in a thread about crashes whether people had seen an improvement. I had and said so.

I haven't seen memory leaks directly mentioned in the patch notes, but things improved after several cryptic "performance improvements" were mentioned.

I'm a programmer and I know how hard memory leaks can be to track down in a live system, where you don't have access to clients that are crashing in the field. So I'm not accusing the devs of shoddy programming; these things happen, especially in programs that have been around for years and have been worked on by dozens of different programmers.

I'm just glad they fixed the problems, because I was getting pretty fed up with crashing in the last 30 seconds of every Lambda I ran...
I've been a software engineer for almost 20 years so why don't you tell -me- how computers work...

Having said that obviously any application as large as this game will have some inefficiencies represented by memory leaks or optimizations that are not used that should be. These will show up on ANY computer, but if a computer is capable enough then these potential problems will likely not be noticeable by a user to any significant degree.

The Devs of this game have naturally tried to make this game work reasonably well on a wide range of hardware, but that does not mean they they are going to spend that much time making it run on something relatively out of date. Sure with some amazing effort they might able to get this game running on a i386 machine with 2 Mb of memory. But since the overwhelming majority of people trying to play games on computers in 2012 are using computers that are much more capable than that there's no real reason for our Devs to spend the effort supporting such a platform.

This is why I'll easily stand by what I said. I'm not suggesting that the Devs are purposely trying to screw people with old computers. But by the same token anyone trying to run this game on an increasingly marginal/older machine can hardly reasonably expect to run as problem-free as it would on a bleeding-edge over-capable computer.

Now obviously the Devs are always proactively doing their best to fix memory leaks. There will even be cases like yours where certain areas of game play for given players will actually improve over time due to the corrective coding efforts of the Devs. Despite these efforts the overwhelming percentage of players who play this game will experience problems that tend to get worse, not better. This is a simple function of the fact that peoples' computers are always getting older relative to the ever increasing complexity of the game itself. The game is always going to get bigger and more complex so there is a certain responsibility on the part of the player to realize that their machines will not be able to keep up forever without being maintained and updated as well.

So ultimately good game play is the responsibility of both the Devs AND the players. The Devs do their best to deliver the most bullet-proofed, bug-free code they can. But knowing that no application is ever perfect there is a certain responsibility on the part of the players to use the best hardware they can to make the game run as seamlessly and error-free as possible. Sadly there are a lot of people out there who have unreasonable expectations and get upset when their low end machines fail to handle a game like this well. They incorrectly assign too much of the blame on the Devs when in reality a lion's share of the fault lies with trying to play this game on an inadequate machine. *shrugs*
  23. It would probably make more sense for there to be a personal "total individual Prestige generated for -any- SG" series of character badges. That way they'd work pretty much exactly like the personal Influence badges and there wouldn't be any question of whether or not such badges would have to reset to zero if you ever switched SGs or not.

Having said that I think it's far, far too late for there ever to be such a series of badges added to the game. This kind of badge series was actually suggested quite a bit back around when SG bases were first introduced to the game. Now that it's been so many years after the fact where this data has -not- been tracked it would suck to have lost all that effort towards these badges. Basically this was a missed opportunity for badges that would now make little sense.

As mentioned by Hyperstrike and Stormbird the only thing such a series of badges would do now is encourage a few badgers to "farm" 50 billion INF in the markets in order to "buy" the top Prestige badge. Case in point I myself have over 50 billion of INF lying around across all of my characters right now. It would simply take me whatever time it'd take to funnel all that INF back through my main badging character (via the INF to Prestige conversion) to have the top Prestige badge fairly instantly.

Like I said badges like these might have made sense 6 years ago. Now, they would be semi-pointless. *shrugs*

After that though I suspect your thoughts on this will be dismissed like these little historical gems of supposed wisdom.
