So much love for Community....

After much talking among friends, I finally decided to give Community ago in early December. Loved the episodes enough, I started a marathon, and now I'm in season 3, with just a few more to watch. Naturally, I find a show I like, and it gets cancelled.

EDIT: Strange picks from the polls. Fringe and Game of Thrones were present in the top shows of 2011, but not present in the top sci-fi/fantasy? I see GoT was put into top drama, but Fringe was nowhere else to be found.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

Better shows than Community have been cancelled sooner so I'm not surrised.

Never heard of it. Or if I have, I've forgotten.

I really enjoy Community, but I think it just has a niche following. Basically what Father Xmas said above.
I felt the same way about...

Since debuting on November 2, 2003, the series has earned six Emmy awards, one Golden Globe, widespread critical acclaim and attracted a cult following, including several fan-based websites. In 2007 it was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME."

Despite the approval from critics, Arrested Development never climbed in the ratings. Fox aired the final four episodes of the third season in a block as a two-hour series finale on February 10, 2006, opposite the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics (which was being broadcast on NBC).

Bad things happen to good people (take out the word people and add in 'shows').

Why is this show so close to being cancelled??
  • It's kind of different while being crammed into the "sit com" category
  • It doesn't have a buddy-buddy lovey dovey approach to anything.
  • A lot of people don't like / can't appreciate / don't understand sarcasm.
  • It's really "meta" inside of being "meta" just to make fun of (or have fun with) the notion of "meta" during some episodes and a large majority are left with "..... the hell?"
  • Animated episodes? Musical episodes? Psycadelic episodes? All done extermely well? Too many people write that off because they just can't wrap their heads around it.
I haven't not enjoyed a single episode yet and think it has just gotten stronger and stronger in both writing, story ideas and execution every episode.

Also, NBC sucks.

I've already forgotten about most of you

Which is coming back on Netflix. It's possible that digital/streaming entertainment will be to broadcasting what cable was to the medium back in the 80s (and by the 90s, HBO had cemented its foundation and had begun producing some of the best TV shows anywhere). If NBC drops the ball on Community, maybe Netflix or Hulu will pick it up, particularly since the show has excellent DVR ratings.

And even though NBC has put Community on hiatus, it did the same with Parks & Recreation, which has come back stronger. The network is in the process of figuring out what its post-The Office and soon-to-be-post-30 Rock lineup will look like, so it's not going to make any precipitous decisions - unless "Kabletown" spooks it.

I'd heard good stuff about it, but never got around to trying to see it. Then last weekend, a friend sat me down and we watched the Christmas episode from this year. It's pretty funny stuff, sharply written for the most part.

Which means it probably will die a sad lonely death. Welcome to (American) TV. I'm still surprised when something good does last any time at all.

(No, I'm still not watching it however; my TV still thinks in analog :P but it plays DVDs just fine)

Also, the show is incredibly funny. Loaded with in-jokes, brick jokes, meta humor, it rips off movies and other shows shamelessly, there's all kinds of background stuff that you have to really see to get (like the episode where Abed was never in the middle frame, but spent the whole background helping a woman go into labor and give birth). No two episodes are ever really the same. Most sit-coms you could take almost any 2 episodes and barely tell the difference between them. That is -never- the case with Community.

Hell, for the COH crowd, all you need is to see Daniel Pudi's Christian Bale Batman impersonation to love the show. Youtube to the rescue!

Hulu still has recent episodes up, and Hulu Plus all of them, I believe.

I don't watch tv. I watch netflix, though.

Frankly, I've never heard of this show your speaking of.

The reason a show will stop being aired is typically because of inadequate profits. The sponsors either feel they are not getting enough revenue to justify the expense, or the actors are asking more than they were getting at the beginning of the show.

Or some combination thereof.

I'm thinking along the lines of...

Why is this series, which is obviously very popular, especially to be winning the votes by such a large margin, so close to being cancelled and on some stupid hiatus??

Why don't more of these fans actually watch it?

Beggars belief, tbh

They do watch it, just not anywhere that television executives measure for ratings, because television executives are giant morons with faces as dumb as a butt.

It's very popular with a narrow segment of the overall tv-watching audience and critics (though not awards ballots), but, let us be honest, it's no Two and a Half Men.

Netflix offers the first two seasons on DVD, and NBC streams several of the most recent episodes on its website.

Incidentally, Greendale Community College has its own website - remember, sign-ups for spring semester begin and end in April.

I think the show is just to smart and gutsy to last. Alot like firefly despite being different genres.

From the trampoline episode that dealt with racism to the D&D episode that dealt with suicidal depression.

Just too smart alot like Sucker Punch, people can only get the obvious and miss the real point of the story every time.

There are a lot of phrases I'd use to describe Sucker Punch. "Too smart" isn't one of them. The "real point" of the story isn't that hidden or subtle or very deep. It's just a flawed flawed movie. Beautiful: yes. Great music: yes. Interesting concepts: yes but not terribly original. Bad acting: yes. Bad writing: yes. Over use of slow motion: god yes. Style over substance: buckets full. Misogyny disguised as feminism: possibly. Deep meaningful plot: come on...about as subtle as a sledge hammer and as deep as a teaspoon. I don't hate it, I even own it (thanks to a sale at Target); but its a C+ movie at best. It's a very long video game trailer mixed with a music video. There are things to like about it, but intelligence isn't one of them.
