So much love for Community....

Yeah I almost lol'd when I read this. Trying to use Sucker Punch as your example of another show that was supposedly "good but just misunderstood" was probably not the best idea in this case. It's like you were trying to make a case for apple juice by equating it to other good juices to drink like orange juice, grape juice and dog slobber juice... Let's just say dog slobber juice is -not- a good juice to mention when you want people to like your apple juice.
I think the show is just to smart and gutsy to last. Alot like firefly despite being different genres.
From the trampoline episode that dealt with racism to the D&D episode that dealt with suicidal depression. Just too smart alot like Sucker Punch, people can only get the obvious and miss the real point of the story every time. |

Spot on. While an interesting concept, it was poorly developed. It's sad that something that, while not an original concept, went against the norm for movie plots, went so poorly. It'd be interesting to see an alternate reality version of the movie that was directed by a higher concept director, such as Christopher Nolan.
There are a lot of phrases I'd use to describe Sucker Punch. "Too smart" isn't one of them. The "real point" of the story isn't that hidden or subtle or very deep. It's just a flawed flawed movie. Beautiful: yes. Great music: yes. Interesting concepts: yes but not terribly original. Bad acting: yes. Bad writing: yes. Over use of slow motion: god yes. Style over substance: buckets full. Misogyny disguised as feminism: possibly. Deep meaningful plot: come on...about as subtle as a sledge hammer and as deep as a teaspoon. I don't hate it, I even own it (thanks to a sale at Target); but its a C+ movie at best. It's a very long video game trailer mixed with a music video. There are things to like about it, but intelligence isn't one of them.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.
Just like Arrested Development before it, Community is a quirky comedy that appeals to folks who don't normally watch TV sitcoms. I love the show, but then I understand why the general public doesn't.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

Something a pal of mine did in support of Community.
Love the show and I echo its battlecry of "Six Seasons and a Movie!"
Here's a visualization of the necessity of keeping Community on the air:

I suppose I'll have to check out the box sets of this show sometime. I think I kind-of, sort-of almost knew about this show but it has definitely been off my radar and I admittedly knew practically nothing about it before this thread.
....so why is it on hiatus???
Why is this show so close to being cancelled?? |
All I can say is if this show is as good as people here say it is then it has at least completely failed in the "encouraging new people to watch it" department. That's probably why it's going to get cancelled no matter how good it is. *shrugs*

You're blaming the show for the network's advertising decisions. A network that has historically made poor programming decisions and has been in the toilet since Friends finally got its unfunny hinder off the air.

NBC hasn't shown any better capability for generating interest in superb episodes as varied as "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons", "Contemporary American Poultry", "Cooperative Calligraphy", or "Remedial Chaos Theory" than Fox did for Arrested Development (and that show also won several Emmys). It's not suprising since network television has been pursuing the lowest common denominator in the mass audience for so long.
You're blaming the show for the network's advertising decisions.

In any case, I'm looking forward to "Basic Lupine Urology", not simply because Law & Order is ripe for a parody, but because Dan Harmon & co. always bring strong character portrayals and sharp dialogue on top of their metahumor.

Eh, I guess I'm not really blaming the show per se. It's just that I consider myself relatively aware of various "alternative" TV shows and movies and somehow after years of zipping around the Internet reading all sorts of reviews and forums and what-not I somehow remained more or less completely ignorant of a show that I probably would have otherwise enjoyed.

Not exactly sure who's fault that was but again I'll speculate that if I somehow missed the existence of this show then it's likely many other potential fans have missed it too. Thus the possible reason why it's close to cancellation. *shrugs*
