Well, NCSoft seemed to state emphatically last week that was not going to happen. And even if they did announce otherwise, I'd assume that too was another in their growing list of lies.

In fact at this point I don't even like the fact they have access to my credit card info. They're that untrustworthy.

Maybe not right this second, but we know it's your job to pass along whatever drivel they hand you. Nobody faults you for it, but, like I said before, we know where it's coming from.

And, keep in mind I know what you said on one of the Coffee Talks, that some people at NCSoft are on our side. That's nice, but unfortunately for us they're obviously not the ones calling the shots in this and people above them are making the whole organization look bad by association.

Ironically, the people who are on our side are probably the ones hurt the most by NC bashing while the real villains don't give a damn. That's not fair or right, but nothing about what's happened around here since Aug 31st is fair or right.

H_S, love ya man but half the stuff coming from one of the involved parties (NCSoft) feels like it has about as much truthiness as this random rumor from some internet forum. So as far as I see it, we may as well flip a coin. And yeah, I know you only post what they tell you, but at the same time, we know where it's coming from and they don't inspire a lot of confidence right now.

    WHY WOULD YOU DECLINE THAT?!?!?!!

Why would they decline any offer?
An offer of $50 is $50 more than the IP/game is going to make them just sitting there.

The fact is, they probably weren't seriously entertaining any offers.
Why would they sell the game/IP to someone else when that would just create competition and potentially take money and customers away from other NCSoft games?

The press release that they "exhausted all possibilities" is just lip service. They never intended to take any reasonable offer and they probably demanded something ridiculous knowing nobody would agree to it.

And really, with all the games they've shut down, has NC ever sold the IP? I guess nobody ever offers them what NCSoft thinks is fair. Poor NCSoft! They try so hard too.

Seriously, with everything that's happened, the rumor could very well be true. I wouldn't rule it out at this point.

  5. The reason this closure is different is because there doesn't seem to be a good reason for it happening. By all accounts by the developers, the game was doing well. They were working full steam on getting the Issue 24 content update finished, which probably would have been released last month had NCSoft not shut them down. They also had Issues 25 through 27 in the pipeline at various stages of development, with I25 obviously going to be a big one. NCSoft hasn't said the game wasn't profitable either, only citing 'restructuring' as the reason for killing both the game and Paragon Studios so suddenly.

Then there's NCSoft's history and reputation of having a...cavalier attitude towards titles in their stable that didn't perform well in Asia even if they were solid in the West. With the memory of the closures of Auto Assault, Exteel and Tabula Rasa followed by NCSoft sitting on those IPs instead of selling them off to possibly allow the games to keep running, is it any wonder that CoH players view NCSoft's recent press release that they've "exhausted all options" (after only a couple weeks) to sell CoH or keeping it running with extreme skepticism?

There are too many unanswered questions, too many things that don't add up. All signs point to the conclusion that CoH wasn't closed because of anything it or it's developers did or didn't do.

The fact that a milestone of a game with eight years of success in the past and plenty to look forward to, with a thriving, enthusiastic community that's been cited as having one of the best relationships with their development team in the industry, can be shut down through no fault of its own for no good reason, despite the tremendous efforts by so many to save it, is practically criminal.

  6. My take is the video shows the CoH efforts are the WRONG ones

For the most part, the SaveCoH movement is trying to squash any "whining and b****ing".

They are trying their level best to be polite. They aren't trying to cause a s***storm, which is what the video is saying we should be doing. Not passive-aggressively asking NCSoft 'pretty please' over and over or showing them we're 'too good' to resort to getting ugly.

My question to everyone is: in the event CoH can't be saved, can and will you get behind a spiritual successor/new super hero MMO?

If so, use this thread to send a message to whoever might be listening that is considering such an undertaking that a spiritual successor to CoH is something you want to happen.

Here's why I don't subscribe to your line of thinking: it's never over.

Right now you have GW2 players and prospective Wildstar players reading about the CoH closure and thinking "yeah, but this won't happen to me. My game is safe."

Just as you had CoH players saying the same when Tabula Rasa and Auto Assault were killed.

You can't save CoH but you can try to stop the cycle.

You want to be a hero? Don't be the d-bag that got hazed in university and now in his senior year has the chance to take a stand against it but says: "It's not my problem now. Besides, I had to take it so now I'm going to unload that anger into some new kid."

It's Massively's job to cover real news. If a 6 year old child sends them an email with crayon-drawn concept art and asks them to cover a "video game" he's making and self-publishing, they're not going to report on that because he's not reliable. If Cletus McTinfoilhat sends a letter to the New York Times that the US President is a reptilian alien, they are not going to give him front page coverage because he is not reliable.
They have to have standards. It would reflect badly on their publication.

NCSoft has also demonstrated that they are unreliable and therefore should be below Massively's standards to cover. They'll shut down a well-regarded milestone of a MMO that's still profitable for no good reason and tell customers of 8 years to kiss off. They'll forge a resignation letter while someone is not even on the planet. They shut down MMOs so often it's become a running gag.

That kind of activity should not be supported or endorsed by any fans of MMOs, Massively staff included. I don't want NCSoft's games to be covered any more than I want "Cheap Meds from China" email scams to be taking out full page ads in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Massively.com: Until NCSoft changes their ways I will not knowingly be giving you any traffic while you continue to give positive coverage to Guild Wars 2, Blade and Soul, Wildstar Online or any other NCSoft game. It reflects badly on your publication and on your standards and I will be urging others to similarly avoid you and other sites that also endorse NCSoft's actions.

    .
  10. I think the best thing you could reply with is to tell Massively that as long as they are going to cover (and therefore provide publicity for) other NCSoft games like Guild Wars and especially Blade and Soul, that you will not be giving them traffic.

It's not about "punishing" Massively or anything so juvenile. In fact, Eliot Lefebvre and others at Massively have been very supportive of CoH and player efforts to save it.

It's about sending them a message that they can convey to NCSoft's PR outlets that the MMO community doesn't approve of their actions with CoH's closing; that if they're going to shut down a profitable, well respected and long established MMO for no good reason, and then 'ignore' player outcry, they are not to be trusted with our money.

Because if NC will do that, what's to say they're not going to just shut down any game at any time "just because"?

If you can get Massively and other MMO news sites to do that, to say to NCSoft their their actions will not stand and that they are no longer trustworthy as a MMO publisher and are not worth covering, they'd feel that. Even if Massively were the only site to do so, it would still make waves.

At the most, all they're going to do is thank us for the support. Any plans they may have (or plans for plans) like forming a new studio to create a new super hero IP and spiritual successor to CoH, they're not going to talk about or even hint about at this stage.

I can't say I'm surprised. NC had zero reason to budge on the IP because all they'd be doing is enabling a competitor. They didn't want the game being saved and they don't want anyone else to have it. I doubt they seriously entertained reasonable offers, and considering they just plan to sit on the IP, even $200 in pennies would be more than it's going to make then for the next three years.

Nope. Better to sever ties with these a-hats and start over someplace green. What we still need to do is throw our support behind 'Formerly Known as Paragon Studios' and show them we want a future with a quality superhero MMO made by them in it.

Having played Vibora Bay, I don't think it was worth paying for. Especially in a game that at the time had big content gaps for just leveling 1-40.

Especially when compared to CoH which put out more "free" content in it's first six months than CO has released to date. And that includes stuff CO had the wontons to charge for.

Siri iCar: "Advisory: Traffic congestion on 5th street. Estimated time of arrival: 10 hours"

Wife: "But it's just on the other side of town!"

Siri iCar: "In just 7 minutes you could be at a TGI Friday's enjoying tonight's special that includes..."

Husband: "Just set the destination to TGI Friday's. Again."

Siri iCar: "Destination set: TGI Friday's. Please enjoy the drive. Sponsored by, TGI Friday's."

That would probably be a UK regional thing because 'kebab' technically can refer to any number of meat dishes. It's like saying 'a roast'; you can have a roast of pork, roasted chicken, beef pot roast, etc.

Though, I'm not saying the way it's being used in the UK isn't valid. Again, using the hamburger analogy, in the US everyone knows if you're going out for 'burgers and fries' it means hamburgers and fried potato.

Furthermore, 'gyro' and 'shawarma' are just variations on the word for 'turn', just like donar, donner, donair etc.

Gyros are a specific kind of doner kebab. The Greek regional variant to be precise. Keep in mind "doner kebab" is a generic name for a number similar of foods. It just means 'turned meat cooked over flame'.

It's like saying hamburgers are a kind of sandwich. That's completely true, but not all sandwiches are hamburgers.

  19. So I caught this premier.

Walked away feeling better about it than I did when the 2003 series first showed up.

    SPOILERS AHOY!

The tone of it is lighter than the 2003 series, but darker than the cheesiest episodes of the '87 series. The show is semi-self aware and the writers already play with people's expectations; there's a lot of trope being played with and plenty of lampshade hanging.

These are a younger acting, less experienced incarnation of the turtles. The first episode is their first time going top-side. They're aren't perfect fighters or a well-oiled machine yet.

Personality-wise, the turtles are pretty much how you'd expect with some slight variations.

Leo is less experienced as a leader and takes his cues from an animated Captain Kirk look-alike on a TV show he's a fan of. Right down to the corny speeches because that's what he thinks a leader does.

Raphael still has anger issues, but will a lot less angst so far. It's more he enjoys fighting a little too much and is very much the impulsive one. His rivalry with Leo is there and seems more friendly than adversarial compared to other incarnations.

Donatello still 'does machines' but he's got a little bit of a swelled head about it. He's poised to be the breakout character, IMO.

Michelangelo is the team's Pinky Pie. That is all.

Splinter, like the '87 series, started off as human. Personality wise, he still about the same if not a little less uptight. He treats the turtles less as students/soldiers he's training and more as his kids.

April is 16, seems sufficiently spunky but doesn't get a heck of a lot of character development in the first couple episodes. They're already ship-teasing her with Donatello.

Shredder appears to be human this time, still leading an organized crime operation called the Foot and so far looks to be completely unassociated with aliens or science fiction elements.

A nice mix of classic turtles and some new twists in a lighter setting. As a fan since the '87 series, I give this series a thumbs up so far.

And, if the special they put out last summer is any indication, when Venture Bros returns there will be a huge dip in animation quality. Apparently World Leaders, the studio they had been using, went out of business? Apparently now the episodes will be done in Flash, like the original pilot from years ago.

    Thoughts?
My instincts and experience tells me than if you do that you run the risk of one of those fandoms taking over. Say the core of the boards in CoH/superhero MMOs and you get a solid 200 people migrate from here (just pulling numbers out of the air). What happens if by some quirk of chance you end up attracting thousands of Whovians(?) I guess it really comes down to if you'd see that as a 'problem' or not.

I'm reminded of a friend of the family who always wanted to start a quiet little tea and brunch spot where she could chat with customers. She picked a spot downtown near a retired living facility, decorated with lots of period nostalgia, piped in some old-timey music and waited. Instead of seniors she got a ton of university kids and young artists from the art college nearby. At first she was upset, but hey, she was doing well by the business so she just accepted it, albeit making a few menu changes and eventually even opening late to catch the night crowd.
