Making a new forum Community: Should I? What should it be?

Recent events have caused me to think about whether I should make my own forums, fresh and anew! Since these forums are closing soon, I thought I'd ask you all some questions. Here we go:

  • Would you be interested in being a part of newly created forums?
  • If so, what sections would you want?
  • What policies/rules would be very important to you?
  • How likely would you be to post?
  • What did you want out of the CoH forums but never got?
  • What do you like about the CoH forums that you want to retain?

I love the CoHers, so folding your need for a new forum hub with my desire to make new forums seems natural.

Let me know. Perhaps it can become the new hangout!

I'll throw my two inf in (in a little while they may not be good for much more...)

I would like to see a RP/Arts section for things like drawings, vids, RP threads, stories, and all of the other community created wonderful weirdness.

Although it might not mean much, It might be nice to retain something like the server specific forums.

This not bad idea actually.

As far as rules goes, probably the standard outline of rules would work BUT they must be clear concise and most importantly enforced and enforced fairly and evenly at all times.
If it says, for example, off topic post that is not relevant to the thread is not allowed, then off topic posts that are not relevant to the thread should not be allowed. Or if it says no attacking other posters, then attacking other posters should not be allowed by anyone in any fashion regardless of their post count and or other factors.

If it's a mad house, I probably won’t. If there some semblance of civilization, then I'll join in.

One thing I wished I got out of the forum is more enforcement of the rules. Some days they enforce them some days they ignore them then they enforce them again, then they ignore them. It kind of made the rules a bit meaningless. Then again, it might have stemmed from that the rules were too vague. It says no trolling but maybe it should point out exactly what is constituted as trolling, attacking another player, insulting another poster compared to leaving a very large gray area.

I do like the topics and ideas but would be nice if some actual deep topics can go beyond a page without someone coming in a throwing it off and the mods not doing a thing about it until 10-15 pages later, if ever.

People tend to follow only rules that are enforced.

The way this forum is broken down into sections is nice.

Just my view and thought on the subject.

I've received a suggestion that any Fandom (Harry Potter, Supernatural, Doctor Who, etc.) that gets three people requesting such gets its own section. So just like we have a Servers section here, we'd have a Fandoms section there.

Thoughts?

Also, reading the above. Thank you for the post.

As a former Community Rep, I can tell you that rules are a very tricky thing. I believe one should enforce them in a way that encourages the community to grow like a garden. One should gauge whether any given thing is a weed or a possible benefit.

That being said, I will consider the deployment of rules carefully, as this is obviously important to you.

That sound like a good idea too.

But we'd need a G-rated, R-rated and AO-rated section for each of those categories.

Being my second request for an AO section.

My instincts and experience tells me than if you do that you run the risk of one of those fandoms taking over. Say the core of the boards in CoH/superhero MMOs and you get a solid 200 people migrate from here (just pulling numbers out of the air). What happens if by some quirk of chance you end up attracting thousands of Whovians(?) I guess it really comes down to if you'd see that as a 'problem' or not.

I'm reminded of a friend of the family who always wanted to start a quiet little tea and brunch spot where she could chat with customers. She picked a spot downtown near a retired living facility, decorated with lots of period nostalgia, piped in some old-timey music and waited. Instead of seniors she got a ton of university kids and young artists from the art college nearby. At first she was upset, but hey, she was doing well by the business so she just accepted it, albeit making a few menu changes and eventually even opening late to catch the night crowd.

... why do I suddenly have my avatar, my signature, and 1% more Private Message space?

I definitely think a fandom section is necessary. And while this community follows exactly the same types of fandom (comics, scifi, anime, wrestling, MLP, TV, movies, etc.) it's a much larger group than we ever encounter outside of a college club or weekend con. It's unlikely that many people where you work would be interested in discussing the latest episode of Doctor Who, Young Justice, Korra, Warehouse 13, etc.

And while there are places for each of those types out on the web, there really isn't a single place where all those things can be discussed.

Let me know when you get this running or need capitol for hosting and acquiring a domain name. I'll be among the first to join.

A community independent of City of Heroes and more a celebration of geekdom in general that doesn't run in competition to any other forums I see.

Thank you! That's extremely encouraging!

The only thing I worry about is spreading the community pretty thin. I can't speak for others, but I only really have enough attention span for one, maybe two "major" forums, and the community is already spreading out between the Titan Network forums and PK's Unleashed. I don't mean to be a downer, but I have to ask this question:

What does a new community forum bring that the existing options don't, in such a way as to justify adding a third location? I fear that this is a question we need to answer before we start making larger plans.

No problem. I attempted to run a DCUO Wiki project for a while but a better alternative came up so I dropped mine. I also have a degree in web development if such a need should arise, but I'm not out to step on someone else's toes so failing technical skills I can always provide financing.

I have used HostGator ( www.hostgator.com/ ) for my web hosting needs in the past. Their service is highly reliable. I have used phpbb before to host a forum environment but I haven't kept up with the times so better alternatives may have come out since then.

That's something I'm turning over in my head. I'm thinking of just making it an homage to fandoms in general. All things with fervent fans welcome.

I'd say depending on forum traffic, maybe make the threshold a bit higher than 3 people, since I can see that getting spread real thin, real quick. And would there be a gaming section? Or just other nerdy pursuits?

If you have an art section, I would love an AO section. Not because I ever want to go there, but that way all the people who inevitably try to post borderline/inappropriate pictures in the other sections have an easy place to go. I'm no prude, I'm just picky about art, especially about adult subjects.

For me, a third option would be great. Unleashed set out to be a very different forum experience than the City of boards, which is great, but not really what I'm looking for in a forum. Same with Titan. They're a great community for those looking for a certain forum experience, but it's not something I'll ever log into past the demise or saving of the game.

Especially with the thought of making it more a general fandom culture site, I'd be down for frequenting a board like that over the existing options. Otherwise I'm dealing with either mostly-dead forums, or well-known troll/dregs of the internet sites. Which I love, but not all the time.

If you made it, I'd be there. You were always a pleasure to converse with, Marcian.

How you want to run it is up to you. If you want mod help, I'll gladly offer my assistance.

I had much the same idea.

Then game the /tells in-game and the messages on here, telling me I was just going to split the post-COH community - especially the Virtue server community group - and that I should back off. One of the messages (not received here) was particularly rude and even a little vulgar.

But in the end, they were right. What we need is one major community hub.

Where do we go from here?

Three is too few people. Ten maybe? As Tiny Bolt noted it depends on forum population.

Marcian, if you need help (building, renewing domain, mod'ing) let me know. If there's RP, I'm never far behind. Lump me in with Reiraku .. you've always been a joy to associate with
